Hey Larry, thanks a bunch for the info. Doesn't surprise me at all that
this was a Stereo Action LP that didn't make it--the channel shifts fit the
SA series sound. As for RCA cutting  their losses by distributing the
record as a club special? Well, that's business for you. Unload a faltering
LP on a market of gullible bargain hunters...and years later, it will be
come a collectible.

About the cover photo: Red red red with two women ready to clash a pair of
cymbals. They sit in a forest of percussion and brass instruments, too,
many of which hang from an unseen ceiling by wires.

About the music: Liners by Francis Traun (??? anyone recognize this name
???) quote Rosengarden talking about a "really rare" percussion instrument,
the buzzimba, "a Rube Goldberg-ish contraption made up of wooden resonators
that buzz daintily like a choir of horseflies when struck with a mallet."
Does anyone know of a site with a pic of this thing? Traun's description of
the buzzimba sound is on target, except I find it prettier than an insect's
hum. Anyone know of other percussion/exotica LPs that feature the buzzimba?
Or even a site with lots of pics of strange percussion instruments?

Here's the real surprise though: Paid $2 for this NM LP at Antone's
Records, where it had languished for a couple months in a clearance bin.
The Antone's guys usually know what they're doing in terms of pricing.
Plus, there are enough lounge collectors in this town so somebody should
have scooped it up. Every so often, the gods smile on the hapless record
accumulator.

Music from 21 German cult thriller TV series, almost all of it high
energy, bold brass go-go stuff with sharp electric guitars and/or
organ, more pop oriented than jazzy. Three tracks by Peter Thomas
that haven't been reissued on CD before! I dotted 5 tracks as good or
less than good, but all the 16 others are very good to excellent.

Does anybody out there have any information on these guys? Their 2 LP's and various other-label releases are my favorites of my entire Percussion collection.
The problem is that none of the releases (two LPs on Modern, and another on Crown) list no personnel, dates, or any sort of information pertaining to the recordings.

A very nice guy who runs a record shop in Sacramento told me a few years ago that the band primarily consisted of studio musicians who had played with Monk, Benny Goodman, and an asortment of other big names. I have no idea how he knew this, but it sounds accurate - the music is top notch, despite the almost comically cheesy abstract cover designs.
If anybody out there knows anything about these guys, or knows of any other releases they put out, please email me.

Does anybody on the List have a copy of the Scarface OST on CD?  This is from
the Pacino movie of the early 8ts.

My brother has been looking for one.  It is a kind of rare import that is out
of print.  The eBay folks are getting a lot for this CD (upwards of 40 buck).
 And at only ten tracks that is a little steep.

I would greatly appreciate a CD copy if anyone can do this.  I would want to
trade or reimburse for any trouble.

I really like the one All Stars recording I have--ended up on several
lounge comp tapes I made. Pretty impressive lineup on the personnel.

The All Stars, Persistent Percussion, Kent 500
Recorded July 5 and 6, 1960 at Radio Recorders' Studio, Hollywood, CA
OK, assuming this is the same band, here are personnel listed in the
liners. Must say one reason I like this LP's packaging so much is the
detailed IDs of  musicians and soloists. Front cover graphic a geometic
thingy clearly meant to lure Command percussion LP fans.

Some of the arrangements sound somewhat interchangeable--i.e., El Choclo
and La Cumparsita are too similar for my tastes. Overall, there's a lot of
swing to the performances and the players seem to be having a ball.

Have also found an All Stars empty sleeve in a thrift bin--no personnel
info, but some of the same tunes. Can't recall the label. If Kent was a
budget label, makes sense that they'd reshuffle tunes on reissues to make a
little dough.

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad (AP) - Ras Shorty I, creator of soca, a fusion of
calypso and an up-tempo beat he said represented the true soul of calypso, has
died. He was 59.

Shorty died of bone cancer at a friend's home Wednesday night, following weeks
of modern and traditional herbal treatments.

``We are all grief stricken,'' said Protector, the spokesman of the
Calypsonians Association of Trinidad and Tobago.

``Shorty was able to succeed in his attempts to modernize calypso, especially
to package it for young people, and I recognize him as the Father of Soca,''
calypso performer Mighty Sparrow said Thursday in New York City.

Ras Shorty I was born Garfield Blackman and started singing calypso as Lord
Shorty.

He fused traditional calypso with an up-tempo ``soca'' beat, what he called the
``Indianization of calypso,'' bringing together the music of his Caribbean
nation's two major ethnic groups, descendants of African slaves and of
indentured laborers from India.

In ``Endless Vibrations,'' his first soca song composed in 1974, he sang of his
need to ``change the musical structure, make it super sweeter ... bring out
that funky feeling.''

It was the start of a major transformation of the traditional calypso beat.
Dozens of musicians adopted his style, taking soca to the dance halls of the
world.

Shorty would soon undergo a transformation himself. He became a Rastafarian and
changed his name to Ras Shorty I. He moved with his family to a forest and
dramatically changed his music to spiritually uplifting lyrics and a new rhythm
he called jamoo.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Claudette, and their 14 children. Funeral
arrangements were not announced.

Well at long last after a lot of dead ends and false hopes the search has
paid off and I am in the possession of both the film and CD soundtrack to
Shailmar.  The search has been going on more than a year as Gionni will
attest to!  Anyway, as I was told, the best piece from Shalimar, "One Two
Cha Cha Cha" was included on the Inflight comp.  But the star on this CD is
the second soundtrack included called "College Girl". Two pieces steal
liberally from Donna Summer and then believe it or not Iron Butterfly's
"In  Gadda Da Vida" but with a 70's Indian interpretation and vocal
styling.  Truly would have been worthy of inclusion on Doob Doob 2 these
are the kind of really (really) great western "interpretations" you can
expect from volume 2.

Just peeked at the foist minutes of the film but I can say that the opening
scene, featuring the song One Two Cha Cha Cha is worth the price of
admission!  The film is in English & Hindi so it isn't easy to
follow.  However it appears to be a spy/crime film and VERY much influenced
by the James Bond style.

I was looking though the Indian Melody site someone posted a while back to
the list and at the bottom was an ad that allowed you to search for Indian
videos/soundtracks so I said what the hell, why not.  At that time, I was
still banking on a second lead that turned out to be negative, so Imagine
my surprise when both the CD and Video turned up!  First time I can say an
Internet ad worked on me too so I was a bit frightened at the same time at
that prospect...

For anyone interested, the company is based in the US but I think also
operates in the UK.

My copy of the Senor Coconut LP arrived in the post yesterday,  nobody said
it was Cha-cha's!.  Well not all of it is.  In fact its a nice mix of latin
rhythms.  A particularly fine version of Tour De France,  breakneck speed,
lots of percussion and a nice big beat.  Played it out last night and it
sounds very nice through the club PA.  Didn't think Music Non-stop worked so
well in that environment.  Bit of a lightweight pressing I thought.

Also in the post was the Titan LP,  Elevator,  which I liked on first
listen,  for some reason the second track on each of the 4 sides seem to
stand out.  Nice sounding,  Big Beatish,  but funkier. Nice picture of the
guys with their wispy moustaches on the back.  I saw in a music paper that
the London second hand shops have a lot of copies,  if thats true,  then I
reckon its worth picking one up.  Well I'd say pick one up anyway,  you know
what I mean......

Last weekend I found a ton (well, about 35-40 albums) of stuff at a record
store that was getting rid of 99% of their vinyl, I just haven't had time
to listen to it all or even keep track of it. But, I must somehow be on
the Mimi wavelength since I also found a copy of David Carrolls
"Percussion oriental" and "Hugo Winterhalter goes Latin". Odd how these
things work out.

Yesterday, however, I scored a copy of Sonny Lesters "After Hours Middle
East", which is quite good. Also, one of the oddest things Ive heard, a
David Carroll album called "Listen baby, lets dance" on a label called
Mainstream, if I remember right. I figured it might just be a re-issue of
his "Lets Dance" album, but after playing it, I doubt it.

Its unlike any other Carroll album I've heard. Twangy surf-rock guitars,
echo-chamber drenched horns, and the occasional lonesome harmonica,
slogging through a bunch of fairly bad surf-rock style tunes. Like the
soundtrack to a very cheesy, early 60s Youth-gone-bad sort of movie. Its
fascinating. Not that the music is really good, its more of a "this is so
bad, its interesting to listen to the musical carnage". Anyone else have a
copy of this? Some of the songs are Carroll originals with titles like
"Pow!!!" and "A taste of Vodka".

Very strange stuff.

Tikis? AWWW dont get me started. I have so many damn tiki mugs it starting
to get ridiculous. I just recently moved to Indiana and have some luck,
however I struck the motherload at a thrift store on my last trip to Ohio,
ironically enough on my way to the Kahiki,  i walked out with 10 tiki mugs
all in pairs every pair different design woo eee, 99 cents a piece . Seems
like Ohio has lots of that kind of stuff, didnt find any great records
though.

Damn im going to miss the Kahiki, what is the deal with that farewell party,
i want to go. Is it some big secret or something? August is creeping up!!

Huge faux-hand-carved plaster tiki mask (not tribal -
TIKI!). Amazingly garish... if I ever get a digital
camera I'll put it up... and then there are the mugs
and the bookends and S&P shakers and candle. In rare
reflective moments, I begin to suspect I am burgeoning
freak and need to be radically rewired....

Mainstream label records have become very collectable for psych music fans.
These records at one point were very common and easy to find and now no one
can get them for less than about $100.00 a pop (such as the amazing LP by The
Tiffany Shade.)

They also released some excellent jazz LPs and some soundtracks.

Additionally, they also put out reissues of older records with new artwork
and retitled songs to make them look like new releases.  Based on some of the
song titles you mentioned from the David Carroll record I wouldn't be
suprised if this is a reissue with new "hip" song titles made up by
Mainstream Records personnel.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Carroll was no where near the studio
when this was recorded.

This is actually true - the building is supposedly in poor shape structural=

resource for students and aficionados of recent Asian filmmaking. At
the site, visitors will find lists of all films made in China, India,
Japan, Korea, and Taiwan since 1988, including information such as
synopses, filmmakers, cast, length, format, and availability of
prints. Sections for each of the countries will also include a
general introduction with multiple essays and background, detailed
information and video clips for eight to fifteen highlighted films
and directors (most include only one of each at present), a list of
all internationally awarded films since 1988, and links to course
syllabi and other resources for developing educational curriculum on
the respective country's film and culture. The site is available in
English, Chinese, or Korean, with a Japanese version under
development.

countries, is based on a "twoclickaway" system that gets users to
search results in, you guessed it, two clicks. Visitors begin by
selecting a country from the pull-down menu, and they can then either
conduct a keyword search in a country-specific engine selected by
lastminutesearch.com or select a different engine from a pull-down
menu; either choice launches a new browser window. Lastminutenews.com
works on a similar principle, allowing users to select a country and
city via pull-down menus and then offering the newspaper's homepage
in a new window. Cities with multiple newspapers indexed have a third
menu. As with many other search portals, lastminutesearch.com offers
a number of other value-added features, including an .mp3 search
engine that indexes "legal sites" (at least one of which launched an
absolutely horrifying number of unwanted pop-ups and extra windows),
a dialogue search engine (Beta), and links to various news sources.
While I cannot recommend the site unreservedly, users who often use
country-specific search engines will want to give it a spin.
