I still find my RESEARCH books are the best. So often questions come up
on this list whose answers are SOMEWHERE in those books.
Most recently, though I got these books and have enjoyed them. They were
all relatively inexpensive as they have been remaindered and are on
hamiltonbook.com:
hi-fi's and hi-balls: the golden age of the american bachelor by Steven
Guarnaccia and Bob Sloan 1997 Chronicle Books, San Francisco. It is
really more about style and appearances than anything substantial about the
music, but it is still interesting. (hardbound)
Album Covers From the Vinyl Junkyard, Introduction by Rob Chapman, 1997
Booth Clibborn Editions, London. What bothers me is that so many of the
cool covers are British editions of U.S. albums...and those covers are
better than the U.S. ones for the same material. For instance, the U.K.
version of Persuasive Percussion has a color picture of Terry Snyder and a
drum surrounded by a quartet of attractive women in minidresses.
The Album Cover Art of Sound Tracks by Frank Jastfelder and Stefan Kassel,
1997 Little Brown and Company, Toronto. This turned me on to some cool
albums and also justified albums I got years ago, albums purchased chiefly
for the cover art.
Hollywood Hi-Fi by George Gimarc and Pat Reeder, 1996, St. Martin's
Griffin, New York. Reviews "bad albums" by Hollywood stars. Quality of
printing terrible, but fun anyway.

I have an album which is partly Borrah Minnevitch.
Guest Star GS 1421 Borrah Minnevitch, Harmonica Merry Go Round
Like many GS records, he shares billing with someone else: The Harmonica
Playboys.
BM and his Harmonica Rascals play: Jazz Pizzicato Boogie, Prelude in C#
Minor, Donkey Serenade and Lullaby.
>Or do they predate LPs? 78s only?
Considering how far Guest Star goes to get its material (for instance, its
Julie London LP featured both sides of two singles she did for
Bethlehem...and then filled with a compatible orchestra the rest of the
album), I wouldn't doubt that these four cuts came from some obscure
78s...but who knows? I don't.

It certainly is hard to get a large group of people to act as one, and much as
we'd all be happy if these things were handled politely, its just not so
easy to
control. This being said I must say again that I really do not find this
list to be
particularly nasty, unforgiving or aggressive. JD lashed out without thinking
and so I suspect did a few people in rapid response. I'm sure looking back
on it, everyone may likely agree they acted in haste, but that's human nature.
The fact that the JD 'performance' was repeated before probably didn't help
the situation and perhaps many felt it was done just for attention. I won't
postulate further...
This being said I somehow cannot relate that particular outburst to the (well
you know who) situation. Here we had someone repeatedly lecturing us all on
our collective attitude and insisting on telling us, repeatedly and without a
break that we were simply 'wrong'. I can safely say I would never invite one
of those polite religious canvassers into my house and I felt here as if one
had been let in and allowed to take the floor. My work gets me involved with
a lot of difficult people and I have a fairly high tolerance level, but I
have to say
this finally pushed me past the breaking point. What I most regret are
losing a number of key members as a result of this episode but this too I
realize is beyond our control. I've said more than I want but I would like
it to be
clear that neither of these incidents changes my views of the usefulness and
importance of this list. Forgive and forget... please...

I was listening to an album today of Buddy Collette's called Polynesia. I was
surprised to see that Marni Nixon sang on it. I loved side one, however, I
didn't care too much for side two, some dude doing a recitation. I suppose my
taste is not so great and everyone here loves side two? LOL I seem to have in
the back of my mind that I have another Buddy Collette album where he's
dressed as a monk or something? Ring a bell? Can anyone tell me a little bit
about him? Thanks.

That would be one of the Swinging Shepherds records he did for
Mercury. I know of two - "Buddy Collette's Swinging Shepherds" and
"Swinging Shepherds At the Cinema". The Shepherds were four flutists
(Buddy Collette, Paul Horn, Bud Shank and Harry Klee) plus rhythm
section. They always posed on the covers wearing hooded robes.
Their records are the coolest, especially the first one -- great '50s
beatnik-y jazz.

The music is by Andr=E9 Popp. Original title: 'L'amour est blue'.
My guess is that the French lyrics were written by Cour and the English
translation by Blackburn. Paul Mauriat, Al Martino and Claudine Longet ha=

it really is disheartening, i am sorry...and yes, i want to vomit.
i have never been there but i feel your pain.
here in baltimore, things like that are happening all the time...
it is like losing a part of your family, well at least a pet!
i recently lost an incredible 70's mod, stone brick spralling multi-screen
theatre complex called Westview Cinemas. it was multi-levelled, ultra-tacky
with fountains, sculptures, crazy carpet up and down the walls, and not to
mention huge screens. like you were at liberaces crib ...it was the only
place i went to the movies...it is now a CIRCUIT CITY....(excuse me while i
cry and puke)
life will never be the same again.
stop the madness.

DETROIT (AP) -- Michael ''Cub'' Koda, the singer and songwriter behind
the 1970s hit ''Smokin' in the Boys' Room'' and the guitarist once
described by author Stephen King as ''America's greatest houserocker,''
died Saturday of complications from kidney dialysis. He was 51.
Borrowing his nickname from the character ''Cubby'' on television's
Mickey Mouse Club, Koda in 1969 formed Brownsville Station and wrote
''Smokin' in the Boys Room,'' which in 1973 rose to No. 3 on Billboard
magazine's charts and sold more than 2 million copies.
Brownsville Station disbanded in 1979, six years before ''Smokin' in the
Boys' Room'' was revived by heavy metal band Motley Crue.
Koda later played in groups called the Points and the Bone Gods, as well
as releasing solo works spotlighting rockabilly and blues. In his
dedications to his Bachman Book collection, King labeled Koda
''America's greatest houserocker.''
Koda co-authored ''Blues for Dummies'' in 1998 and has written a monthly
column called ''The Vinyl Junkie'' for trade magazines.

IRVINE, Calif. (AP) - Herbert Fox, one of the West Coast's most influential
managers for classical and jazz musicians, Broadway performers and dancers,
died Thursday. He was 82.
Fox, with Columbia Artists Management Inc. for 54 years, was part of the
early careers of tenor Mario Lanza and blues legend Leadbelly.
He served as chairman of Columbia Artists Festivals, which toured talent
ranging from Mel Torme to Dizzy Gillespie to the Ballet Folklorico Nacional de
Mexico.
Fox also founded the Broadway Theatre Alliance to put musicals and plays on
tour, and managed the careers of the Southern California guitar-playing family
the Romeros.
Fox retired from Columbia Artists Management in 1993. He served on the boards
of directors of Opera Pacific, the Orange County High School of the Performing
Arts and the William Hall Chorale.

TOKYO, July 1 (Kyodo)
Anli Sugano, a Japanese jazz singer who performed internationally, died Friday
night of cancer at a hospital in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, her family said
Saturday. She was 51.
Sugano, whose real name was Shizuko Umeyama, participated in Canada's
prestigious Festival International de Jazz de Montreal in 1987, becoming the
first Japanese singer to do so.
She also performed at the Blue Note jazz live house in New York City from 1995
until 1998, when she was diagnosed with cancer.
Sugano, a Tokyo native, was also a radio and television personality. She
started singing jazz songs while a student at Musashino Art University in
Tokyo.
She lived in New York from 1972 for three years, and sang as a vocalist in a
Japanese rock band before becoming a soloist in 1978.
She was one of Japan's leading jazz vocalists in the 1970s-1980s, along with
Mari Nakamoto and Yasuko Agawa. During this time, she also hosted FM radio
programs and a Japan Broadcasting Corp. (NHK) music program.
Sugano produced more than 10 albums, including her 1982 album ''Love Sketch.''
She published a book in 1999, in which she describes her battle with cancer.

Since there was some discussion here after the initial report of her breast
cancer a few months ago, I thought I should share some more information I just
heard.
This weekend, I attended the science-fiction/media convention DragonCon. Among
the guests was Cynthia Myers, former Playboy Playmate and co-star of Russ
Meyer's "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls." Ms. Myers proved to be a very
friendly, outgoing guest, and I wound up enjoying a fairly long conversation
with her. (Incidentally, she's still as lovely as ever, too.) Our discussion
drifted from her work with Russ Meyer to some of Meyer's other associates, and
she filled me in on Kitten Natividad's situation.
Thankfully, it's all good news. Ms. Natividad is now completely cancer-free;
the mastectomy did get every trace of the cancer before it could spread. She
had no health insurance, but Russ Meyer took care of her medical expenses.
Cynthia also reported that Kitten's surgical scars have healed, and that she
was ready to start reconstructive surgery (Cynthia thought she might even have
started already, but she wasn't certain).
I felt I should pass this news along as a follow-up to the original report.

Maybe more for the European branch of this list, but if anybody wants to
combine a relaxed week or weekend of far out Exotica happenings and a
closer look on one of the historic centers of Germany's past at the same
time and place, then this might be interesting to you:
http://tikiland.de/tiki2night.html
There will be art (I will be around the entire week outpowering my
sculptural ambitions on some overdimensional blocks of Ytong), there
will be music, there will be a press conference for the forthcoming
"Book of Tiki" by Sven "Tiki" Kirsten, there will be hanging around in a
tropical pool paradise and there will be a cocktail competition.
Tiki2Night, as the name suggests, is part 2 of an event that took place
here 2 years ago, when Weimar was "culture capital" of Europe.
Apparently there are reasonable hotels around and even a possibility to
camp within the park of the Auerstedt castle, where most of the events
take place.
Sounds fun? You're all invited. If you come by car, bring records, CDs,
tapes to swap...

last-minute change of venue opening for Marc Ribot y Los Cubanos
Postizos at the Knitting Factory. The players hustled downtown for a
hastily arranged but tight, high-energy set. The RSO has been promised
a rescheduled date at Jazz @ MoMA, hopefully in Fall 2000.
The RSO, which performs modernistic arrangements of Scott tunes,
debuted at the Jewish Museum in Feb. 1999, and has performed at
Central Park SummerStage opening for They Might Be Giants, and at the
Animated Music Festival in Brussels. The group consists of Wayne
Barker (piano, arrangements); Brian Dewan (electric zither, piano,
accordion, koto, electronics); Michael Hashim (saxes); Will Holshouser
(accordion, arrangements); George Rush (bass); Rob Thomas (violin);
and Clem Waldmann (drums).
The RSO performed on WNYC's "New Sounds" with John Schaefer on May
11. The performance is available as an audio archive (on demand, but
not downloadable) at the WNYC website: <http://www.wnyc.org>
Additional performance dates in NYC, LA, and Europe are being
explored. For concert booking inquiries, contact Irwin Chusid

Some comments on Manhattan Research Inc.:
"The electronic work of Raymond Scott had been long out of print, but
MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC., recorded in the 50s and 60s, sound like
nothing so much as the future."
-- PETER BUCK, R.E.M.
"Tireless dedication, impeccable taste, and uncompromising
perfectionism is evident in every detail of this wonderful collection,
which uncovers a neglected library of this maverick's pioneering
electronica. From the astonishing sounds to the beautiful packaging,
MRI is an essential release."
-- JOHN ZORN
"I rate Raymond Scott as one of the greatest music technology
innovators of the 20th century. His music technology vision was so
wide that today it is impossible to turn on a piece of equipment in
your studio without automatically issuing a benediction to the spirit
of Raymond Scott."
-- MATT BLACK / COLDCUT
"Raymond Scott belongs to the phalanx of unique people like Les Paul,
Oscar Sala, and Leon Theremin, to whom we owe so much in developing
our own musical identity today. MANHATTAN RESEARCH INC. is one of the
best CD presentations I have ever had my hands on.''

# SECRET HISTORY OF ROCK book lauds Scott
It was recently called to our attention that Roni Sarig's excellent
THE SECRET HISTORY OF ROCK: The Most Influential Bands You've Never
Heard (1998, Billboard Books) contains a fine overview of Raymond
Scott's contribution to modern music. The book covers the rock
spectrum, spotlighting such groundbreaking cult artists as the
Stooges, Minutemen, Residents, Can, 1/2 Japanese, Minor Threat, Last
Poets, and scores of others. However, the first chapter -- "20th
Century Composers" -- features Erik Satie, John Cage, the Theater of
Eternal Music, Philip Glass, Glenn Branca -- and Raymond Scott.
In addition to his excellent overview of RS, Sarig includes the
following quotes:
DJ Spooky:
"[Scott's] Soothing Sounds for Babies [sic] is f***ing brilliant. It's
repetitive, with a beat pulse. I look to him as one of the originators
of a techno aesthetic, in the way that techno comes out of the
detritus of the industrial revolution."
Marc De Gli Antoni, Soul Coughing:
"I loved cartoon music, but it wasn't until [we] put together 'Bus to
Beelzebub' -- when we found this great cartoon that we had to [sample]
- -- that I became aware Carl Stalling had taken stuff from Raymond
Scott. [Soul Coughing's] 'Disseminated' is consciously a Raymond Scott
tribute: a short piece, a wacky little phrase from [Scott's] 'The
Penguin,' completely built on his loop. And on 'Zoom Zip,' the trumpet
part is taken from Raymond Scott's 'The Toy Trumpet,' but slowed down
and edited."
Tom Maxwell, Squirrel Nut Zippers:
"What Raymond Scott did was completely off the wall, very f***ed up
tonally. ... He was a nut out of left field who made sounds nobody
else was making. 'Powerhouse' kicks my ass; I love the changed times,
the bizarre key, the weird drum breaks, the strange intervals, and
it's really fun."

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) - Kemal Sunal, the wide-mouthed actor who reigned for
almost three decades as the king of Turkish movie comedy, died of a heart
attack aboard a plane that was taking off Monday, reports said. He was 56.
Sunal, Turkey's most popular and highest-paid entertainer, died at Istanbul's
Ataturk airport despite doctors' efforts to revive him, the Anatolia news
agency said.
The heart attack happened as the plane began taxing down the runway. He was to
fly to the Black Sea port city of Trabzon with his colleagues and his son Ali
to begin shooting a new movie.
The star of several situation comedies that are still shown on television years
later, Sunal appeared in 82 movies since 1972.
He could portray the lives of oppressed villagers or star as a simple postman
clinging to a way of life. Recently he played an army private lampooning the
military's rigid rules.
His last movie, ``Propaganda'' in 1999, was a satirical look at the state's
ignorance of the public.

TOKYO, July 3 (Kyodo) - Veteran Japanese blues singer Mina Aoe died of
pancreatic cancer Sunday night at a Tokyo hospital, her family said Monday. She
was 54.
Aoe, a native of Tokyo whose real name was Shizuko Ihara, made her debut as a
singer with ''Kokotsu-no-Blues'' (Blues of Rapture) in 1966. She received the
prestigious Japan Record Award in 1968 for ''Isezakicho Blues,'' which turned
out to be a big hit.
Known for her husky voice, Aoe's hits also include ''Ikebukuro-no-Yoru'' (Night
in Ikebukuro), for which she was awarded another Japan Record Award in 1969,
and ''Nagasaki Blues.''
She released ''Taejon Blues,'' a South Korean pop song, in 1984, which paved
the way for other Japanese singers to perform Korean songs.
