You must have made a typo ---- GLAD tale is more like it!!!! I've been
collecting records for over 25 years and this hobby has brought me some much
joy and pleasure!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALso, congratulations of scoring that Thorens
turntable. I hope you got a good deal on it. They don't come much better
than those!!!!!
I know they are great for top condition audiophile records. How does that
Thorens work with the got to have, but in slightly beat up condition records?
I would really appreciate the info as I am considering taking the plunge
from the midrange $500 turntable up to one of the insane $1000 ones. I've
heard those really expensive audiophile one's can require a lot of
maintenance and tinkering. Do you think it's worth the HUGE investment (I
should add that my finances are very limited due to some serious health
problems --- and that's all I've got to say on that personnal topic.)

no luck here!
Robert,
Thanks for visiting the Borders.com Info Desk.
At the present time we do not carry magazines on our site. You may want to
check your local Borders Books and Music store, as they carry an extensive
amount of titles. There are also a number of websites which sell magazines
(or which have online versions), if you prefer to do your shopping online.
We are always on the lookout for ways in which we may improve the services
we offer, however, and we welcome suggestions from our customers. Although
we may not be able to add every feature that is suggested, we do pay close
attention to our customers' requests.
If you like, we can add you to the list of customers who wish to receive our
email newsletter. The newsletter is sent out bi-weekly and includes both
recommendations for titles and information on improvements we've made to our

Robert Drasnin is listed as an arranger/producer for some tracks on
Latin Village, and wrote the title track. Also, the rest of Denny's band

I belive you are correct with this one. The situation as told to be by Martin
Denny was that he was quite displeased with Liberty releasing a lot of
"ghost" albums of his in the '60s. The reason stems from the untenable
positon Liberty put him in contractually. As an artist signed to Liberty he
had to produce a certain amount of albums a year (remember these aren't the
current days where a group can take a couple of years to turna record in!)
and yet tour/play live engaements in support of those records.
As many of you on the list appreciate and can hear the care that Martin Denny
puts into his arrangements, either the recording or touring aspects had to
somehow be compromised. Asemploying a live imposter was out of the question,
Liberty would often in the mid-60s release "ghosted" records with Martin's
name on them, a situation which he still feels awful and angry about to this
day.

I've been quite happy with my 166-II - last night I enjoyed it with a
recently acquired $1 LP (Valley of the Dolls). For $1, you can imagine that
the LP was kinda rough ... The important issue is to clean the LPs (as well
as the stylus on a regular basis). A cleaned LP in conjunction with a nice
turntable works pretty well.

I am certainly not a high end audiophile - I did ask my friend (the guy I do
my site with; a certified flat-earther) about how he would budget a
reasonably priced (?) high-end system. His take was the following:
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
Analog Source:
Linn Sondex LP12 Ittok/Valhalla - $1200 USED (add $600 for Cirkus upgrade)
Roksan Xerxes X - $1000 USED
Rega Planar 25 - $700 USED or $1250 NEW
Rega Planar 3 - $500 USED
Digital Source:
Naim CD3 - $1200 USED (maybe same price but the LP12 will "wipe the floor
with it".)
Roksan Caspian - $800 USED
Rega Planet - $500 USED
Rotel RCD950 - $275 USED (not so Flat Earth but cheap)
Preamp:
Naim 32.5 - $250 USED
Naim 62 - $350 USED
Naim 42.5 - $175 USED
Amp:
Naim 140 - $700 USED
Naim 110 - $450 USED
or Integrated:
Naim Nait 3 $700 USED
Rega Brio $350 USED
Arcam Alpha 7 Integrated (Pre&Amp) $250 USED
Speakers (add ~$100 for stands):
Epos ES14 - $700 USED
Naim IBL - $300 USED RARE
Epos ES11 or ES12 - $400 USED
Rega Kyte - $300 USED RARE
Linn Tukan - $400 USED
Linn Kan - $300 USED
Speaker Cable:
Naim NACA5 min 12' pair - $160
Linn K20 USED - (ask me)
Interconnect for CD:
Chord - $125
DIY Naim ARO - $40
LP Cleaning crap - $50 (stylus cleaner, brush, record cleaner)
Equipment Rack $200-$400:
Base
Target
Sound Orginisation
Most Naim/Linn/British/Flat Earth types subscribe to the "Source First"
philosophy which means that the frontend (CD, LP) should be the best
component in the system. A good but addicting source of information is the
Naim Forum accessible from www.naim-audio.com . A good source of Flat Earth
info is www.pfmedia.demon.co.uk/flatearth . Don't underestimate upgrading
your TT [Thorens 166-II], you have a lot of vinyl. If you want to come over
and try out
different components, you can (ie, what does the thorens sound like on a
32.5/110, etc).
- ----------------------------------------------------------------
I guess to answer your question directly, for a $500 turntable he would go
with a used Rega Planar 3. I had bought my Thorens 166-II from him (with a
nice Rega cartridge) for $250. He gave me a great deal.

Thanks for the post on high end equipment. For anyone who collects used
vinyl (that's all of us I believe) I would say throw out your Discwasher
stuff and break down and by a Nitty Gritty or VIP professional record
cleaning machine. I bought a Nitty Gritty and it is amazing what a
difference it makes. I've bought records that were truly filthy and cleaned
them and they play perfectly now. Also a perfect record sounds so much
better after a spin on the Nitty Gritty. No doubt one of the most important
parts of any exotica record collectors equipment.
Your friends list was all top but expensive stuff --- however, I feel that
paying the kind of money he mentioned for speaker cables, and system
interconnect cables is insane!!!! The three dollar ones at radio shack suck
and should not be used, but there are plenty that work great for less than
the price he mentioned.

Here hear. Ditto or just rekkid collector period.
1 of the best investments I made was my NG machine.
Have cleaned probably 15,000 records and it still rules.
Got my money's worth that's fer sure
The "basic" differences are
Nitty Gritty sucks with gravity and
VPI sucks against gravity
Also, the VPI "sucking wand" doesn't touch the vinyl at all and with the
Nitty Gritty, the LP is laid down on this soft "velvet-like" slot, that sucks
everything in the grooves out of them, in a downward motion

Would someone kindlyreview the premises laid before us here regarding vinyl
cleaning and the names of the "machines" that do the work? JB/dish detergent,
warm water, and a soft sponge have been my friends. Are they really my

They can be both. Before getting the Nitty Gritty machine I first used the
little discwasher brush. I found it to remove some of the larger dust
particles but not do any real cleaning, and even sometimes messing up records
by just spreading all the small particles around into a line (even if it
couldn't be seen) thus making a pop or what have you everytime that record
revolved.
After recommendations from this list I hesitiantly tried the dishwashing in
the sink technique. Positive results often, but occassionally a record would
sound much worse!
Then I saved up and bought the Nitty Gritty. It blows away the sink method.
It is a million times quicker and easier, plus thru the use of an industrial
stength vaccum, focused on one tiny slot it cleans all kinds of stuff you
wouldn't imagine was imbedding in the grooves of a record. Extends the life
of the stylus, and another major bonus YOU CAN NOT RUIN A RECORD THIS WAY!!!
And I have called the Nitty Gritty manufacturers a few times with little
tweaking quesitons and they will talk on the phone with you as long as you
want, super nice people, and they back thier product.
Some people swear the VIP machines are better, but I don't agree. Also the
VIP machines are a lot more expensive. A manual NG cost about $250.00, or
you can get the automatic one for about $350 to $500 depending on who you buy
it from and what kind of deal you work out with them. The VIP is gonna cost
you a lot more.
Think of it this way, if you spend over $350 a year on records why not match
another $350 and have them sound so much better. Also, I have used my
machine everyday for over a year and had no problems. They supposedly last
almost forever.
Every time I have to replace the stylus on my cartridge it costs money and
time, and now I have to do it less. I play records constantly. I used to
have to replace my stylus every three months! Now it's down to two times a
year. (I replace it at first sign of wear because A. records sound better
and B. I know from experience a worn stylus will fuck up your records and
cause groove wear/distortion which is a million times worse than any pops or
clicks.)
Sorry for the unrestrained enthusiasm but I love these machines.
I would love to hear comments from others on the list who have these machines.
PS. I queried this list about buying one of these when I first started
considering it and everyone was very helpful in my decision to make this
expensive purchase.

Last time this discussion came up on the list I described the vacuum record
cleaner that I made myself for about $30.00. I haven't compared it to a

I emailed the company and they sent me another set of instructions, gratis!
Although... I'm not sure where I put it...

Hey Jack! Does it do windows too???
It sounds like I'm getting the same model you've got, where all you do is
pump the little miracle solution onto the record, right??
Also, FYI Byron....we got it for $305 right off of Ebay! I'll let ya know
what happens with it!

I'm glad this topic came up. I had promised myself a year ago that I would buy
a nitty gritty machine with this year's tax refund. These posts reminded me of
this, so last night I went ahead and ordered the thing - and was rewarded by
getting a further discount by ordering before the end of April.
The model I ordered, the 1.5FI, is priced at $509 on the official nitty gritty
home page. If you order it from the site Jack just mentioned (
http://www.nviclassical.com/nitty-gritty.html ) before the end of April, you
can enter a special code (available on their home page) to receive an
additional 10% off. I ended up paying about $405 for the 1.5FI model - a
savings of over $100 from the official site.
I also ordered an additional gallon of cleaning fluid - they also sell their
own 'house fluid' that is about half price of Nitty Gritty's - and I'm too lazy
to formulate and make my own cleaner fluid. With all the dirty records I own,
I should have probably ordered about 10 gallons.
Vern.

Not familiar with #3. I have Che and am quite fond of it. It's mostly
traditional-sounding Andean and Cuban music (to coincide with Che Guavara's
travels in Bolivia and Cuba). The guitar work on Che is incredible (by
Juanjo Dominguez). There is a lot of passion and energy in this music. It's
nothing at all like Bullitt or Mission Impossible, but a nice piece of work
by Schifrin. His recent soundtrack to the movie Tango is similar in that it
is very true to traditional Argentine tango music. Schifrin is highly
qualified to compose in that genre (he played piano in Piazzolla's band in
the early part of his career).
I don't care for Black Widow. IMHO, it's hit or miss with Schifrin in the
latter part of the 70's. It seems during this period, he was trying to
incorporate elements of fusion which was popular at the time and ends up
with a pretty dry result -- the passion of Bullitt seems gone. I also have
No One Home from the same period which is even more disappointing than Black
Widow. His LPs Towering Toccata and Ins and Outs from that period are not
great, but not bad. The sound is a little less fusiony. On Ins and Outs
especially, he has returned to more of a traditional combo formula. Another
disappointment from that era is Schifrin's Free Ride with Dizzy Gillespie.
It has a great moogie sound which is more or less destroyed by the drab
instrumentation accompanying the Moog.

Looks like nitty gritty also makes something called the "The Record Doctor
II", a stripped down economy model, so to speak...
$199.95 with a free bucket of sooper dooper cleaner
Read all about it here:
http://www.audioadvisor.com/product.cfm?productid=449
The Record Doctor II is the most highly recommended low-price record cleaning
machine in the world!
Stereophile magazine calls the Record Doctor, "the least expensive way to
effectively clean records." And now we've improved it, too, for even easier
operation!
Made by Nitty Gritty exclusively for Audio Advisor, the Record Doctor II
features the same vacuum motor and vacuum cleaning strip as Nitty Gritty's
expensive machines, but does not have the expensive motor that turns records
for you. So, turn the records by hand-and save over $100!

Hey all,
I'm in the market for a scanner. I don't really know what to look for. I
do know I want something that can handle OCR software, and I'd like
something that streches past 11" to make scanning LP covers two steps
instead of four. Is there anything else I should look for? What brands are
good? How much resolution? Is there a way to gauge color-quality? I
understand that some scanners lose quality near the edges. I just don't
know how to judge.
Anyone?

Subject: (exotica) Kahiki Story
My family and I finally made the 1.5 hours trek north to Columbus to visit
the Kahiki before they tear it down. And, from the rumors we heard in the
bathroom, they are planning to tear it down for sure!
In any case, it was pretty expensive for medium style food. I've had
similar food at a decent Chinese restaurant for half the price. Could this
be why he's not making any money? It's tough to pay twenty bucks for a
standard piece of chicken.
They had these cool smoking punches with dry ice that the kids liked and I
got a skull mug. But check the gift shop first because, as a non-drinker, I
paid 2.50 for a little bit of fruit punch, when I could have bought the mug
straight out from the shop.
Anyway, okay, it's not really a story, but while the restaurant was neat and
the food decent, it's not hard to see how he's not making money serving
mediocre food for high prices.
Anyway,
anyone else care to comment?
Peter

I'm in need of color scans of the front and back covers of the first and
second volumes of OM LOUNGE. I'm on a Mac, if that means anything to you in
your scanning.
Please let me know if I can scan something for you in return, if you're
missing a cover.
Thanks!

i don't know about specific brands, but you should look for a scanner where
the glass is flush with the rest of the surface. the document glass on my umax
is slightly recessed, so that when i scan a record cover one edge isn't in
complete contact with the glass, making it darker than the edge that is. this
makes for constant frustration trying to match tones when i piece the two
images together.

Subject: (exotica) fantasy in pipe organ & percussion
Attention Ross -- here's a different 'pipe organ & percussion':
"Fantasy In Pipe Organ And Percussion"
Georges Montalba at the Mighty Wurlitzer
with Percussive Accompaniment
(Somerset SF-8400)
Both the compositions and players come from a classical background, so the
feel is different from that classic low-budget "Pipe Organ & Percussion".
Bigger sounding production, too. Montalba is reinforced by "two drummers
with an armory of cymbals, bells, triangles, tympany and all the other
necessary percussive battery required to produce such a program in good
musical taste and excitement." In other words, a well-stocked
orchestra-style perc pit. Though not mentioned, there's also well-deployed
xylophone and vibes.
The tracks:
Danse Macabre
Mazurka From Masquerade
March Fantasy
In A Persian Market
Theme From Scheherazade
Ritual Fire Dance
Polovtsian Dances
1, 4, 5 & 6 have the most exotic moments, natch, but in a way, I really
enjoy the "Mazurka" and "March" tracks. They have the feel of a huge,
out-of-control carousel ride.

It's great:) The last copy I sold was to the group AIR, though Ashley Warren.
They love it and were planning on covering Paul McCartney's
"Across the Universe" for an upcoming LP
