Don't know if I can put much energy into this one...
but are there a lot of Trader Vic's mugs floating
around out there? I've found one coconut and another,
shaped and ridged like a conga drum: maroon body, gold
bands down the sides and along the mouth and base...
nicely glazed as well. Love to have a full set of
these.

There are quite a few..............one's a great "Ubangi tribeswoman" from =
the neck up, black color (I think a coffee/liquor combo was served in it) =
- - then there's a large )( shape with a guy lounging on a barrel of rum in =
the "Trader Vic's" outdoor hut while two island girls pay him attention....=
...then there's that great, squat little mug with the flaired bottom that =
features a bunch of native guys scrambling after topless native gals who =
are running away, pounding at their abductors chests as they're being =
picked-up, or jumping into the water.  (There are a *few* who don't give =
up a fight and enjoy touchy-touchy-feely-feely on the hillside......) a =
hut with "Trader Vic's" sits on the horizon amid palm trees.

Never saw the conga drum - those (great and realistic looking) Trader =
Vic's mugs are fairly common at yard sales - it looks like a few years =
later the quality of the coconut mug dropped - not nearly as "real" =
looking.....

It was only a matter of time before musicians filed lawsuits against
Napster for listing downloadable audio files of their records on
Napster's cooperative database. Metal band Metallica was the first to
announce a lawsuit on April 13, 2000, alleging the company "violated
the law by committing continuing copyright infringements, unlawful
use of digital audio interface device, and violations of the
Racketeering Influenced & Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO)." Yale
University, University of Southern California, and Indiana University
were also named as defendants in the case, because they have allowed
students to use campus resources to access Napster. MP3s have been
controversial since the digital audio files first debuted, stretching
the limits of copyright law. While Napster does not store any of the
files at its site, it allows users to search Napster's database of
MP3s which are kept on users's computers. (For more information on

and Economics_).

This short article from _Rolling Stone_ (1) covers basic reasons why
Metallica has been able to sue. _Wired News_ (2) reports on the

these are called the port light mugs.  like a ship would have on it's port
and starboard sides.

the red one would go on the patron's right and the green one on the patron's
left at the dinner table.  cute, huh?

this is what i call the "fornication" mug.  it was first produced in 1962
(maybe 61 or 63) and will say so on the bottom.  the people on ebay tout this
as BEING MADE IN 1961 eventho they are still produced (or at least were a
couple of years ago).

the vic's in beverly hills only has the coconut mugs for purchase now.

Singer Vic Damone Announces Farewell Tour

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Better see Vic Damone before it's too late.

The 71-year-old Damone, who sang ''Gigi,'' ''You're Breaking My Heart,''
"An Affair to Remember," ''On the Street Where You Live" and
"If Ever I Would Leave You,'' is retiring after 53 years.

He will close his career with a one-year tour starting May 27 at
the Westbury Music Fair and ending May 18, 2001, at Carnegie Hall.

''It has been an incredible, thrilling journey, but all good things must
come to an end,'' he said Friday, April 14.

''It has always been important to me that I give audiences the very best
of what I have. And I've always wanted to go out at the top of my game.''

Damone (real name: Vito Rocco Farinola) was born in Brooklyn, NY on
June 12, 1928.  He got his first job as a part-time usher at New York's
Paramount Theatre during his school holidays.

His breakthrough came after he tied for first place in the famous Arthur
Godfrey "Talent Scouts" show in 1945 at the age of 17.  He was launched
into a cabaret singing career by comedian Milton Berle.

In the early 1950s he was signed to a movie contract by MGM, and played
romantic leads in a string of films, including "Rich, Young and Pretty,"
"Athena," "Hit the Deck" and "Kismet."

Frank Sinatra once said of Damone: "This boy has the finest set of pipes
in the business."

 I had a fun time in Paris last summer as well...balconies,red wine,cheese,bagettes,sunsets, & the
company of the lovely ladies Florence,Anna, & my favorite madamoiselle M. I bought a fantastic
oversized book called Gainsbourg et Caetera by Isabelle Salmon/Gileles Verlant. The book is
reasonably priced & has cool colorful pop art images,inserts,cut-out pages, & a free interview
disc. Strange but I found that french records were alot cheaper to buy in Montreal than in Paris.
Out of all the record stores that I went to in Paris...I have to admit, that I really dug visiting
the giant Virgin Mega store, bec they had that crazy micro chip that allows you to scan all the
cd's at the listening stations to hear all the tracks. Avoir mon petit poulettes...

As you can tell, all the Denny discussion has brought me out of my stalking.
Still busy with work, but squeezing in the List time.

OK, some discussion on the Denny ghosting issue:

I pulled out a couple of later Denny albums this morning which I have not
listened to in well over a year.

Martin Denny! (LRP-3438)
Martin Denny Sayonora (Sunset SUS-5169)

and enjoyed the more easy listening sound of the later recordings.  Yes, Bob
Florence was listed as "arranger" on Martin Denny!

So can we talk about what is known about the ghosting process and what albums
were suspected (or known) to be ghosted?  Some of the newer List members will
certainly enjoy the discussion.

BTW, both albums, while a distinctively different sound that the more
"Exotic" early albums, were both VERY listenable.  Kind of a nice change.
The Sayonora with the Japanese influence is nice and the Denny! has a nice,
slow, calming effect.

How is that for a discussion starter?

Latin Village certainly has a different "feel" to me compared this the
classic material from the 50's (released on CD by our friends at Scamp
Records).  But, I don't have much material in beteween that classic
stuff and Latin Village, released around '63/'64 I believe.

Robert Drasnin is listed as an arranger/producer for some tracks on
Latin Village, and wrote the title track. Also, the rest of Denny's band
is NOT listed on this album. I highly suspect ghosting...

Marcos Valle: "Samba '68"
CD, Verve 559-516, 1999

rated +++++

Beautiful album by the writer of the bossa nova hit "Summer samba" aka "So
nice". All but 1 song here is penned by Marcos or his brother Paulo, and
most of them are sung by Marcos and his wife Anamaria, including "Ckrickets
sing for Anamaria", my all-time fave bossa song! Also 1 wordless vocal
piece, "Pepino Beach". It's quite short though: only 11 songs, and 27
minutes long.

I don't really like "Black Widow" because it epitomizes all that was wrong
with CTI against which I admit a leaning.  I bought my first "jazz" rekkids
on that label. Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" Herbie Hancock stuff, Don
Sebesky....Too fusiony, too afraid to sound anything less than "accessible."

I've seen and enjoyed the movie.  The movie follows the novel closley- the
location has changed to Chicago from England, and some of the musical references
are different, but other than that it follows the book very closely.  The movie
did a good job at capturing the main essence of the novel.

My favorite parts of the movie (without giving away the plot) are 1) whenever
John Cusack walks into his apartment and one sees racks and racks of records,
stacked similarly to how they are in my home [and hoping that my female friends
will thus equate me with John Cusack - movie star ]  and  2) seeing John Cusack
give one of his monologues/voiceovers while cleaning records with a discwasher
brush. Having this simple gesture of an activity I do often shown and validated
on the big screen meant a lot to me. It doesn't take much to give me a thrill, I
guess.  (oh, the scene with the Tim Robbins character in the record store was
really good also)

More importantly, the friends of mine who aren't into records really enjoyed the
movie.  The worse thing would be to portray a record collector character and
have the movie flop.  Better to have a movie where my non-record collector
friends come out and say "John Cusack - the record store owner - he was so
cute"  rather than "John Cusack - the record store owner - what a dork"

I bought this issue of 'Later' (based on another recommendation from this list)
and listened to the CD while driving today.  This CD is definitely top notch -
easily matching the quality of some of the Sequel label's Loungecore compilations
I got 2 years ago.  This CD had many versions of songs that I had never heard
before, and I came away at the end very, very impressed.  By all means, make a
trip to your local magazine store before this month's issue gets replaced with
next month's issue.  $6 for a great 20 track CD, plus a glossy Brit magazine is a
tough combo to beat.  Haven't really read the magazine yet, but when the music is
his good, who cares.

Here's my sad tale:

I had not been exposed to much of this genre until two years ago or so when
I decided to throw a polynesian cocktail party for 75 or so folks. After
visiting King Kini's Club Velvet and grabbing some drink recipes, buying 12
tiki torches, as well as all four CDs from the Rhino cocktail series, I was
(kind of) hooked. These parties have since become regular events. About a
half year ago when someone that attended one of these parties dropped a
couple $1 LPs on my desk (with excellent cover art) and asked if I was
interested in buying one of his old turntables (a Thorens 166 - he is one of
the freaks that only buys NAIM equipment, has a $3K turntable, etc.), I
became fully hooked. Since then, I've been frequenting junk stores, record
stores, record shows, buying books, etc. Our living room now has 400 or so
LPs leaning against various things... This clown that got me hooked became
my partner in our hobby site devoted to the genre (see below).

I personally enjoy the 'old' material (pre 1965 or so) much more than the
new. Perhaps this is because I've only been exposed to the old LPs I've been
amassing. Maybe its the cover art - a CD case just can't match an LP cover
(e.g., Denny's Primitiva).

Its a lot of fun - sure keeps me off the crack pipe. It's also a hell of a
lot of fun to have dinner parties where you crank up the turntable and throw
on some Yma Sumac and watch the conversation take a _decidedly_ bizarre
turn.

You may also be able to pull some useful stuff in a book by David Toop
called "Exotica".

I flipped through it at the local mega-bookstore and couldn't quite get a
handle on it.  Anyone read this book?

Also, you may want to find the following magazine article:

"The Witch Doctor In Your Living Room" from Hi-Fi/Stereo Review (March 1960,
pages 62-67).

I haven't had a chance to look up the article yet but its supposed to cover
Baxter, Denny, and Lyman.

Though it may not tie directly in to the topic of your paper, it may be of
some use.  I thought it sounded cool.

Yep - very interesting book. It is primarily focussed on Les Baxter. I was
fascinated to learn that Les did the music for 80-90 B/C-grade horror/bikini
flicks (you can easily verify this at allmusic.com). Apparently, he enjoyed
doing this as there is trememdous musical latitude (?) that one has when
scoring horror films as opposed to more traditional films.

There was some other good info on the relationship between Denny and Lyman,
as well as how one of the founders of the BMB came from Lyman's group. Thor
Heyerdahl was also discussed, as well as Sumac (and her crazy husband) and
Eden Ahbez among others.

I really enjoyed the book.
