hey robert,
Mo from Munich, Germany sent a note to the list regarding your question
above. one of our list members even met Lyman on a trip to Hawaii last year.
take a minute and introduce yourself to the list when you get a chance. we
welcome newcomers, so don't hold back. regardless of what someone named BJ

Both the Wrong Box and Modesty Blaise are currently on E-Bay, but the
prices are suitably stiff. The Dunwich Horror is also up there, by Les
Baxter, but what I heard of it was the same song with different
arrangements, so you may want to go for better Baxter.
The same auctioneer has a Mary Tyler Moore-as-a-model album (Cha Cha Cha -
Raoul Martinez and Orchestra) for an opening bid of 45 dollars; Ron Grandia
and I found Mambo Favorites (same photo session. different artist) for a
buck! Chee! (or Cha!)
Also, if you really would like to know what Ann Magnuson is up to nowadays,
she has a web page http://www.annmagnuson.com . She also wrote an article
for Artnet. What is meant by the caption?

The Dunwich Horror rules.
I don't know if that's Theremin or what, but
it kills, whatever it is.
MANY great soundtracks have adifferent variations of the main title,
like The "Ipcress File" or a thousand more
It's not neccesarily a "bad" thing
Also, instrumentals aren't songs:)
Everyone has those "I got it forra buck" stories
Me ? "Astro Sounds From Beyond The Year 2000" and a couple of hundred more
What about YOU ?
My "non-commercial" web site, the "House of Games" has been updated
with tons more album covers, if you'd care to see
I think I added another page to it

Mea Culpa!
I was the originator of the current FAQ--but I would be the first to
admit that I've kind of fallen down lately with keeping it updated
and adding new suggested topics.
If anyone who plans to be around for a few years is interested in
taking over maintenance of the FAQ, I'm cool with passing on the
baton. (It has been a pretty long time since I tested all the URLs. .
. )
Moritz are you interested in taking this on?

True. My favorite is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" by John Barry for a
soundtrack of the "theme and variations" variety. To paraphrase, "I don't
know what that keyboard is, but it kills!" As to "Dunwich Horror", ask the
man who owns it (in other words, not me!). As I said (and I didn't take
Mr. Diamond's post as a slam), I only heard parts of it and that was
sixteen or so years ago.
Another soundtrack that vanished all the way gone was "Silent Running",
also reissued by the good folks of Varese Sarabande as was Dunwich
Horror. My brother and I looked for it as soon as the movie came OUT and
couldn't find the thing. It was on Decca and the soundtrack was by Peter
Schickele and featured a song by Joan Baez and we never saw it, until he
found the reissue at a comic book convention some years later.
A similar fate befell "Water" (don't bother with the movie!), which had one
song featuring George Harrison and Eric Clapton. I found a copy, on
cassette (!).
For a dollar:
Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Beatles (Vee Jay)
Primitiva - Martin Denny
Casino Royale, sealed, but not for long! (part of a collection;
technically, I paid fifty cents)
Also, I found my million-dollar baby in a used record store, but that's not
quite the song, is it? :^)

I am glad Brian didn't take anything I said as a "slam".
There wasn't anything there meant to be and the thought
never entered my mind.
The clique's on the list is what has made me (personally)
rejoin and then leave again and again a hundred times,
since whence this list 1st began MANY years ago.
Personally, I hate clicques and this list is overflowing with them,
but maybe I can learn some things and maybe I can contribute some things
and maybe some things will be interesting. There has been a thread or 2
that have already
I'll give it a shot, once again.
But if I have something to say to any one in particular,
trust me on this 1, I will say it directly to them.
So, if someone, perhaps you, perceive something I have said
to be a "slam" or "dis" and I didn't say it to you directly,
then it's all in your imagination:-)
Sincerely,
Jack

Lyman originally played with Martin Denny, then went out on his own recording
several LPs in a style similar to Denny's. Some folks on the list love him
some do not. Some find him superior to Denny some would heartily disagree.
There was a ot of discussion on this topic a while back.
If you like Denny and other exotica stuff pick up atleast one of Lyman's
discs (one of the original LP reissued in toto, not some cheap comp) and see
what you think.
I am not personnally a huge fan of Lyman but have a few of his albums. Maybe
someone else on the list would be willing to recommend their favorite Lyman
disc.
And, welcome to the world of exotica music. I hope you have fun on the list.

Not at all a bad thing. If I like the main theme I am hoping that the
soundtrack will consist of many variations on the theme. Like most on the
list I love to hear different arrangements and recordings of some favorite
songs, and that's part of the reason I love soundtrack LPs.

Jeez, you're going on like you met Martin Den...
Oh.
In any case, it turns out that Harkit Records reissued the Bedazzled
soundtrack last year (they also reissued the Klute soundtrack). Does
anyone have contact information for Harkit? The released was 500 copies,
so I don't have my hopes TOO high (and if Jack Diamond already offered it
on his website, I'll be real ticked at myself!).
Incidentally, the original title that Cook and Moore wanted for "Bedazzled"
was "Raquel Welch", so that movie marquees would read Peter Cook and Dudley
Moore in "Racquel Welch".
I suppose that Rex Reed would have been bemused at a similar marquee for
"Myra Breckinridge"...

P.S. Thanks, M. Ace for verifying that was indeed THE Arthur Lyman in that

Subject: (exotica) Denny vs Lyman
In my humble opinion
It is impossible to even start an argument
about Denny and Lyman or Denny Vs. Lyman
Denny is a pianist, of whom A Lyman played Vibes
on MD's 1st LP and then went of to "somewhat" rip off
MD's sound, but not really at all, because it's just really
a seriously stripped down version of MD's sound WITH
the main lead instrument being vibes
For me, AL is just lame, big time
Are there even any wild bongos going on ?
I don't think they ever even stretch out at all
I do know that there was a HUGE thing going on with Henry Kaiser,
no, not the killer guitar player:), who I think had both groups play
under his DOME thing-a-ma-bob.
Cool looking thing, too and supposedly acoustic perfection
But, Lyman is weak and MD RULES
Are there even bird calls on AL's LP's ?
Denny created a completely unique and original sound
AND THEN THERE ARE THOSE ALBUM COVERS!!!
I have a few sealed/new copies of a few different MD CD's that I am selling OUT
and not restocking, sooooooooooooo, how about $12.00 each to whomever wants
them ?
I think you'd have to go to my site to see what I have left

Yup! Listen to his version of "Afro Blue" on his Greatest Hits album, for
example(thanks, King Kini!) and there are squawks a-plenty, although I am
sure that Denny gives you more squawk for the bawk. My favorite part on
that is the piano, oddly enough.

I have to agree with Jack Diamond that Murderers Row is overrated. Schifrin
has several soundtracks that I consider better (Bullitt, Mannix, Enter the
Dragon, etc.).
Bedazzled, on the other hand, is the stuff. I don't think I would spend the
usual ebay $100 for it (I've never spent that much for a record anyway).
But, if you are lucky as I was to find an affordable copy, take the bait.
It's got a nice variety of tunes -- some instrumental, some vocal. The title
track is unique with Peter Cook's matter-of-fact spoken words contradicting
the sung lyrics in the casual manner you could only expect from Beelzebub
himself. The last tune, Lilian Lust, is probably my favorite. The piano
carries this soft, almost bossa-like chromatic theme which is very eerily
echoed by the strings. Hip, yet chilling.
Great film, too. Dudley Moore has never been better!
I heard he's having some serious health problems. Does anyone have the
latest on this?

Well, we all know what side of the fence I am on, but let me shout a little
from my side.
The breadth of what Denny did was tremendous. All the way from the bird
calls as old Jack says, to the more classical composures like "Forever and
Ever."
Denny has depth, both in each piece and from piece to piece. The next time a
Denny tune is played, listen to just one instrument -- whether a percussion
or Denny at the piano, and you will understand the complexity of his
arranging.
OK, so are we all on my side of the fence now?
Good!

Hi! I can't believe this came up on the list. I was just about to ask it.
Really.
Mio Padre is going to Abruzzo Italy to recover from doing his taxes. I was
thinking of asking him to buy me stuff if it's cheaper in Italy. Is it?
Thinking of the Easy tempo series and some soundtrack comps. Any ideas on
what I should ask him to get? I have to be very specific. Or it won't work.
Looking for new stuff to play on my radio show that people here the states
will love.

Arthur had a couple of good tunes in him, too, didn't he?
Not quite the complexity and whatnot of Denny, but
I happen to LOVE 'Yellow Bird' and 'Taboo', etc.

I for one am glad to have both and wouldn't mind at all getting all the
recordings from both of them. If it was just one of the other, my
"exotica" would be far less diverse. It is great that each does things a
little differently and has a different sound...yet they play enough of the
same things and have a somewhat similiar small combo sound with the intent
of being exotic... so having both of them helps expand the "exotica" scene.
Of course there are others, but you really can't mention exotica without
thinking of either. After them you can bring in George Arnaud or George
Cates or Robert Drasnin or....well, you know.

Jack was kind enough to point out to me off list that I made a boo boo.
Leo Arnaud was the guy I was thinking of. Sorry 'bout that. That's what I
get from talking off the top of my head without looking at the record!
By the way, Jack had an ebay listing for one of Leo's great records. I
found it interesting, as he was good enough to explain (not all sellers are
either knowledgeable OR honest enough) that one totally different looking
and numbered LP by Leo has exactly the same songs on another LP. Both were
in mono, too...so I seriously doubt they were different performances. I
don't think I have ever seen this kind of blatant repeating. Sure LP tracks
get rotated around in different releases, some new, some old...but this is
the first time I have seen the exact same record in two totally different
guises. Who knows, they may have used the same stamper for both! If I had
the money I would have got the other version just to see...and to own both
cool covers.
But, at least I got the good info about this from Jack.

I don't know what prices in Italy are like, but I do know there are two
very good compilations that Gionni sent me a while back, which are
probably not readily available outside of Italy. If you can get them
there, I would highly recommend "Beat Psichedelico Alla Celluloide" and
"Moisaico Psichedelico Alla Celluloide" - both great 60s instrumental
stuff. Johan reviewed these a while back - check his site for more
in-depth reviews. Very cool stuff...

Either of the "Best of Arthur Lyman" CDs would be a good start, as would
Lyman's first album "Taboo" (CD has bonus tracks too). There was some
talk about a new Lyman comp coming at some point (Otto???) but haven't
heard anything of late.
Lyman's stuff tends to be mellower although on some tracks the drums and
such are actually considerably raucous! Also, on albums like Hawaiian
Sunset Lyman incorporated instrumetns like guitar and ukelele that Denny
typically avoided. These are used to great affect on that album, IMHO.
Finally, I'd like to plug my Exotica Archive website which has an essay
on the evolution of Exotica, and several articles on Arthur Lyman.

If Lyman copied Denny's sound, then how can he be weak and lame?
Derivative maybe (in your scenario) but if it sounds like Denny how you
can gripe?
> Are there even bird calls on AL's LP's ?
Methinks you should know what you're talking about before opening thy
mouth. OF COURSE there were bird calls on the Lyman records. Hell, he
STILL does birdcalls as part of his weekly performance at the New Otani
hotel in Waikiki. Yeah, Lyman didn't do this as much as Denny did, but still...
> Denny created a completely unique and original sound
I would remiss if I didn't point out that Lyman was there at the Shell
Bar the night the frogs started croaking too... (as was Augie Colon).
YES, Denny gets the lion's share of credit, but Lyman is no rip-off
artist (how can he rip off a sound he helped create?). When Vince Clarke
left Depeche Mode to form Yazoo, did that mean he was ripping off DM? Of
course not!
And, as pointed out in the book "Widening the Horizon - Exoticism in
post-war popular music", Lyman's sound can be considered "more evolved"
than Denny's. (This is an excellent book, BTW).
> AND THEN THERE ARE THOSE ALBUM COVERS!!!
Denny's album covers were better of course, though Lyman had a nice run too.
Don't get me wrong, Denny's albums were better than Lymans (for the most
part) and are certainly better produced and arranged. But, each man made
a unique and viable contribution to the world of Exotica!

I think I've got a job coming up. And if I do, I'm going to buy a
standalone CD recorder. And then I'm going to start archiving and getting
rid of stuff. And some of the stuff I get rid of will be soundtracks.
Then again, they're nice objects.
So maybe I won't get rid of all of them. I'll keep stuff like the Staccato
soundtrack for sure. But I don't know if I'll keep "Last Summer" even with
a picture of my dream gal Barbara Hershey.
My copy of Murderer's Row isn't close to mint.
It's a big dilemna but I've already got a few hundred other things on the
floor in boxes slated for archiving and purging.
I won't be doing the soundtracks till the fall and that's assuming I can
devote the proper time to this job. (I'm referring to the archiving, not
the paying job.)

Didn't I see a cut from it on your radio playlist? Am I confused?
Anyway I LOVE this LP especially the instrumental cuts. I used two of
them, I think, on my exoticaring tape.
We live close to each other don't we?
I'm sure we could arrange something. A tape now and a CDR later in the
summer maybe after I buy one of them thingy's.
I could have kept this private but this is a truly great LP and Stu Philips

Yeah I know he did the Hollyridge Strings and they may not be everyone's
cup of tea but this soundtrack and the other Hell's Angel related one he
did are about the best American stuff I've ever heard. Right up there with
any of that Italian stuff we all live for.
