About the Lava Lounge being located in a run down strip mall.....
I've got a copy of "The Blue Hawaiians at the Lava Lounge" and from the
artwork on the cover you get the impressions it's right off the sand at the
beach and all by itself. It's interesting how you romanticize about places
that are far off and you may never visit.
Thanks for the reality check.

This is very true, Domenic. There are some pictures on the "Shots In The
Dark" CD that show the lava-ly interior. All the cuts are current artists
takes on Mancini tunes. Our Brother Cleve has a nice cut on there with is
very good, but IMO the CD is not to my liking. Too much electric guitar.
Way too much. Not sucking up to Cleve, but his is the best track on the CD
and about the only one I like. Most of the CD does not have the orchestrated
feel that I like. I am curious if there are other comments out there.
Back to Domenic's comment. Lot's of areas in Hollywood are a little run
down. This particular shopping center is fairly run down. It has maybe 3 or
5 little shops, all with the typical extruded aluminum and glass fronts. The
Lava Lounge is fairly small too. Probably about 1000 sq. ft. and a narrow
affair. Still, it is one of the tiki-ish venues and deserves a little stop.
There is a cover on the weekends for the DJ (a few bucks) and I am not sure
if there is a charge during the week.

I agree that its too guitar-based. And for Cleve to bring that whole

That was a real band? I just thought Cleve was a wizard at the electronic
keyboard. It's the only track, besides 4 Piece Suit's I remember. The
space walk beginning and ending is nice too. Dreamsville!
Isn't Four Piece Suit on that CD. Doing "Something for Cat" I have it on
there "Ready To Where?" CD. They also cover "A Shot in the Dark" and John
Barry's "Human Jungle" on that. The sax player Dave gives the band a real
full sound that distinguishes them from the electric guitar rock sound.

Have fun, Mo, and let us know what Heyerdahl says about those jealous gray
mice. Jim Bob just promised to write up something about Heyerdahl vs. the
scientists tonight. Should warn you the phrase "crackpot theories" cropped
up often in our conversation.
Jim also credited Heyerdahl with some first-rate archeological surveys of
some Rapa Nui/Easter Island sites...then Jim mentioned a story an islander
told him when he was there. "Some of the islanders quickly cottoned to the
fact that Heyerdahl was looking for evidence of South American influences
on the Island. So they faked some artifacts, hid them in caves, then took
Heyerdahl there to 'discover' them. Sure, the islanders were out to make
some money [as guides], but they also were joking around at Heyerdahl's
expense. This sort of thing happens with archeologists and
anthropologists."
All this is much more captivating than work. But I got a deadline tonight,
pal. Round two later. Forwarded your post to Jim, too.

Cool. With any luck they'll reissue "Dance Mother Goose With A Beatle Beat"
too. If you like twist records, budget rock 'n' roll, revisionist lyrics or
all of the above, you would enjoy that.
Or a comp of their novelty singles would be fun. They did lots of licensed

It's a good CD, but I think there's a lot of overlap from the Easy Tempo
CDs themselves (it could all be from them, for all I know - I only have
two, and there are duplicated tracks from them here). It's stronger
than the Easy Tempo compilations themselves, though (imho) - but it's
not as good as most of the other stuff on Eighteenth Street Lounge (the
"Jet Society" compilation is much stronger). Recommended, but only if
you don't already have all the Easy Tempo series of CDs, and you really
like this kind of music (Although I think that the Lee Selmoco Orchestra
track is worth the price of the CD alone!)

no, it's all electronic, except for the wordless vocals. Only half of the

Murderer's Row is high on my "tough" list of sought after 60s soundtracks too.
Others on my list pop up all often but bidding is just too fierce.
Bedazzled, Honey West and Modesty Blaise are the first to come to mind. They
always go for good money, far beyond Osbornes price guide. One day, I'll
probably fork over the cash for these, even though I seriously doubt they
will meet my high expectations.
John Barry's "The Wrong Box" and Tom Dawes "Minx" I've all but given up on.

I sold "Murderer's Row" to Ashley Warren a few years ago for $65.00, I think.
I think that's also what I paid for it
The keywords here are "I sold"
If it was amazing, I wouldn't have sold it.
It's not amazing, but that's just me:-)
Bullitt is good, but not GREAT.
It's a good record, just my opinion. NBD
I just scored a sealed/stereo copy of "Kelly's Hero's",
which I have not yet cracked open or heard.
Don't see that around too often, at least I don't
Isn't the music the main priority ?
As opposed to having to get the original on LP ?
For me and only me, it's the music
I don't care what the format is and if I happen to find it
on LP and I can afford it, then great.
If not, oh well, I still have the CD and the music
Bullitt's on CD. So what's the problem ?
NOW, give me a few hours off and I'll come up with some SERIOUSLY great
soundtracks for ya, like "Up The Down Staircase" by Fred Karlin
Ford wants that record SO BAD!!!
That's Howard Roberts on guitar on Bullitt, btw

I bought the Arling & Cameron (Music for Imaginary Films) and DJ You DJ Me
(Rainbows and Robots).
The Imaginary Films LP, while not quite as on the D'n'B tip I was
expecting, I'm really starting to love. A bit of a mix of styles (one track
is an attempt at UK garage that doesn't quite work) but it has some sublime
moments. One track is a beautiful blend of Morricone orchestrations and a
gentle sequenced pulse that is just wonderful. Sorry I'm at work and don't
have the titles. Theres a nice bit of soft pop, a Bossa Nova (and a heavier
Samba version), and a bit of spooky Theremin too.
Rainbows and Robots hasn't been such an instant hit. Side 1 and 2 (of 4 -
its the LP) have some goodies, its in quite a mid 90's groovy ambient
style, some Kraftwerk moments, some similarities to the mellower
Propellerheads tracks. For some reason it makes me want to play my Juan
Atkins / Model 500 LP's. Overall, I'm not quite sure. But I'm still
playing it, so its obviously giving some pleasure. I think space bop were
playing some tracks off it recently.
Not quite the Easy experience I was expecting, perhaps thats it.
Anyone else have comments?
Thanks

Well, what a wonderful evening! Thor Heyerdahl is really as nice and charming
as I expected, and as smart. He's only 4 years younger than Martin Denny, so
you could say, they are the same generation - and I think even related
characters (as far as I know from all the descriptions I got from people who
had met Martin Denny personally).
Mr. Heyerdahl was always ready for a joke, and although he had some serious
issues, never took things or himself all-too-serious. Talking to him and
hearing him talk was like looking into a big book of eternal wisdoms, like
when he talked about the relationship between man and nature, that he sees as
basic for the understanding of the path modern industrialized societies takes.
I was amazed of in how many statements I agreed with him.
Now, as for the two points that I promised to ask him... 1st, his reputation
amongst established scientists. For one thing, Heyerdahl is a scientist
himself, he studied biology in Oslo in the first place and later geography.
When he was a young student - he obviously likes to tell this story when asked
about why he started the Kon Tiki adventure - the thing he realized at
university was the fact, that no scientist ever used to exchange his knowledge
with scientists from other fields. All the specialists always remained within
their own subjects, which Mr.Heyerdahl saw as very uneffective and unhelpful
for scientific investigation. It was really like this: The biologists were
investigating the culture plants of the Polynesian islands (sweet potatoe
f.i.) and animals (dogs!), but if asked, where they supposedly came from in
the first place, they said, "that's not our business, it's the field of the
antropologists". And Heyerdahl, who knew that these species were existing in
South America thought, they cannot possibly have come there by themselves,
soemone must have brought them there. However, after his world-famous Kon Tiki
trip Heyerdahl wasn't known as a scientist yet in the world; many just
thought, who cares for a Norwegian adventurer, a son of the Vikings, and of
course they were not happy at all, that this raft journey had destroyed all
their theories about sea travel in early history.
2nd, the genetical researches... Heyerdahl claims he was the first who started
to investigate the genetical relations between the people of South America,
the South Seas and South East Asia, by doing systematical blood tests; one of
the results was the total missing of blood group B in the South Seas, a group
that is very common in South East Asia, so it was impossible that the
migration had come from there directly. He also pointed out, that he had never
claimed that the South Seas were ONLY settled from one side, he had always
said from both sides, but how exactly did it happen? Apparently the situation
is much more complex. Some of the genetical qualities of the mitochondria can
be raced back as far as 20.000 years, a period of time, when all kinds of
pre-historic wanderings have taken place, including the settling of America
from Asia via the Aleutian landbridge. Mr. Heyerdahl said, he is still working
with scientist teams in Canada and Peru on these questions and they are doing
genetical tests all over the world. The latest trace lead them to investigate
the Red Indians in North America, and he added with a smile, they are afraid
to give away their blood, so it's very difficult. Of course I couldn't step
into the subject of genetics so deeply in that situation; after all the reason
why he was there, was to introduce the German edition of his 2 years old
auto-biography, called "I Adams fotspor", "In search of Adam". or so. But I am
sure the last word isn't yet spoken in this controverse matter. I just had the
impression that Heyerdahl is very thorrow in his theories and not that easy to
satisfy with unproven facts.
Unfortunately I couldn't join the Heyerdahl group for dinner, but my
girlfriend Katja did, and she has an interview of her own. which I might
translate into English for all of you one day. BTW: Heyerdahl could speak
german very well, as well as a couple of other languages.
As for me, I went to see Herbie Hancock in concert. It was his 60th birthday -
he looked much younger though - and it was abolutely fabulous. All the
discussions of this list of the last 3 months came to my mind when hearing
them play and I had a lot to let my mind circle around questions like the
differences of Jazz and Exotica, improvisation and arrangement, entertainment
and performance, male and female art (the drummer was a "she", my age and
great!). It was a beautiful day. Christian Kellersmann, who had invited me to
this, told me that very soon there will be a couple of CDs of reissues of
Brazilian music coming out on Universal Jazz. So be prepared, boys and girls!

'Modesty Blaise' is disappointing, but the others are pretty top notch,
imho. Every track on 'Murderer's Row' and 'Honey West' isn't a killer, but
the ones that are are *really* killer. Lots of groovy Thomas electronic
organ on MR, just like on the Flint albums. HW is top notch crime jazz,
although my fave track is 'Sweet Honey', a very sensuous alto sax led
number. "Bedazzled" is worth every cent it goes for these days (in the
$200+ range it seems); except for the singing nuns piece, every track is
amazing. It could be the best Now Sound record of them all. It got
bootlegged last year, but I never saw a copy of it anywhere. Astroslut
covers the theme on their new album, and the Cook/Moore version is on a
couple of boots; 'Strip Club' is on the recent "Discotheque Vol 1" bootleg.
Maybe somebody will reissue the original LP when the new film version comes
out, or when Dudley Moore dies. Maybe..........
>John Barry's "The Wrong Box" and Tom Dawes "Minx" I've all but given up on.
yeah, those two are very tough to find. "The Wrong Box" had the worst
distribution of any of the Mainstream soundtracks, for some reason, and
stereo copies are especially elusive. I saw a copy at Footlights Records in
NYC a few years back for about $150

I know its all subjective but I disagree with this one. I think the
Bedazzled soundtrack is a bit lame. I own the crappy Harkit bootleg and
just don't see what the fuss is about. What am I missing here?

whatever you are missing, i am too Charlie.
i do love the Theme Song sung by Cook during the tv go go show
(as well as its companion version by ASTROSLUT!)
AND Raquel Welch in general but as for the film and the soundtrack,
i found it very disappointing after all of the hubbub and the $200 deposit
i had to put on it to rent it!

please check out the FAQ at

is estimated as one of the leading artists this list is about.

You had to put a $200 deposit down to rent this movie? Wow! And up
here in Canada, the Bravo channel shows it for free every few months, no
commercials... (including a screening tomorrow night...)

Taking a look at the Exotica FAQ I realized that of all things links to
the official/main homepages of the main artists are missing. Searching
in my own bookmarks brought only Denny, Baxter, Lyman. So please anybody
send me links to the homepages of/about the following artists and
labels, if there are any! They will be included in the FAQ and will be a
good quick source for all of you:
Esquivel
Command
Phase Four
RCA's "Stereo Action" Series
Ferrante and Teicher (sorry Keith, lost both the link and your recent
posts)
The Three Suns,
Lenny Dee
Dick Hyman
Raymond Scott
Brass Ring
Herb Alpert's Tijuana Brass
and any other link going directly to a page about an artist or a label
(not the pages generally on exotica, lounge etc., those are in another
chapter)

True, this is the spirit of Mr. Denny... always merry
& bright as Henry Miller used to say. He enjoys
dropping an off-color joke in the midst of serious
discussion to make sure you're paying attention. one
of my favs is his recounting of the photo shoot for
"Primitiva" with Sandy Warner. after the photographers
umpteenth take of her in the freezing waters of Lake
Arrowhead in the southern California mountains, she
finally got fed up and said "shhhiiiit!"... turning
her brrrrrr into the sexual grrrrrr that graces the
cover.
bright moments,
Fluid Floyd
