If BJ had been male, my attitude toward him would have been even darker.
Yes, I acknowledge that amounts to a sort of patronizing reverse-prejudice.
And don't forget, some folks had BJ pegged with the wrong gender.

m.ace, I had no wish to provoke you or anyone on the list. Yeah, I recalled
that some mistook BJ as a man--if she replied with a pedantic rap on the
knuckles, I missed it. I mentioned my concerns about eXotica as boyland
because I hoped for a the typically thoughtful exoticat response. Why
aren't there more women who collect records and are eager to talk about it?
Maybe Sullen Choirboy will take this one on, drawing from his interviews
for "Vinyl." And I really wish more women posted more often on the list. I
miss Ms. Fondle as much as I do Jill.
Apologies you or anyone else on the list who took my remarks personally.
They were not intended that way. It's my turn for flames, I suppose.
Now where's that asbestos cocktail dress?

Mercy, no! No flames or irritation here! It was simply a straight-ahead
answer, no spin intended. I even thought it interesting that you brought up
the point, because I had been thinking about the similar question of,
"would things have gone differently if BJ had been male." I've developed
plenty of contempt for pushy alpha-males over the years, so I know in my
case BJ would have irritated me even more (rightly or wrongly).
Now that you mention it, our current *participating* female population does
seem unfortunately low (who can say about the lurkers). It used to be a
healthier mix a few years ago. That was one of the things I appreciated
about the list when I joined up. "Ah! It's not just a bunch of fan boys."
Perhaps it will readjust at some time. Hope so... it's healthier to have a
more even mix and fuller perspective.
>Now where's that asbestos cocktail dress?
Now that sounds like an art project -- juxtaposing cocktail culture and
blind faith in technology leading to health hazards. Or something like
that. Or just a handy frock to wear for the ending of "Kiss Me Deadly".

First of all I've gotta thank BJ for one thing. I know that this doesn't
represent the best of my qualities but I love this topic!!!!!
Okay as to Mimi's point...
What's wrong with you? You on the rag or something?
Geez I hope you know I was kidding there. I couldn't resist. Sorry.
Was our attack on BJ sexist in nature? Well not with JimmyB anyway. In
private correspondence he questioned me when I identified her as a woman.
Jimmy thought she was a man so he's off the hook.
As far as my sexism goes, I must admit that BJ's particular brand of
self-righteousness, nit-picking and her habit of ignoring all your good
points and only addressing the areas where you might be a little weaker,
did remind me more of the women I've known in my life than the men I've known.
Then again, the issues at stake when I argue with men are usually a lot
less crucial and emotional than they are with women so maybe my
experience is not reliable. Arguing over whether the ball crossed the line
into the hockey net, even when a car is coming and you have to get off the
street, while it can get heated is not as highly charged as finding out
you're sleeping alone.
With men I don't usually feel like I'm fighting for my life or trying to
justify my very existence so maybe my experience of arguing with men has
led to my feeling that men are altogether more reasonable and fair
fighters. Even if we are always wrong.
The only thing I can say for sure about this topic and the possibly sexist
motives in my attack on BJ is that at no point did I think of her as a
"bitch" as Mimi suggested. I didn't even think of her as the various other
epithets that begin with the word "stupid" and end with less genteel words.
And that's in spite of the fact that her opinion that when the Ellington
band played it was only jazz when someone soloed and NOT jazz the rest of
the time was possibly the most stupid opinion I've heard in years.
And as soon as I read that, I realized that her wrongheadedness transcended
gender and I never really thought of her as a woman ever again.

My significant other has a whole theory about that very subject. Men, she
submits, are measurers of existence. They need measurable units to quantify
an otherwise unquantifiable experience called living. They do this with
sports, records, stamps, coins (anyone have a 1909 S-VDB?), tools, electronic
gear, other gear, and other items of a utilitarian nature. Women are
envelopers of the entire earth and look at all existence as one unit, each
component inseparable from the whole of it all. That's how she sees it....JB

The funny thing was that some - incl me - first thought BJ is a man, and that
may be the reason for a roughness that some thought a man can take, but when
they learned she's a woman, they suddenly felt, they'd gone too far. When I
was new to the list I thought for a while, Jill was a man; when I told her
after finding out "the truth", she was really proud of the fact that she was
confused for a man.
I don't know why women seem to participate less in certain activities. That
is, I do think I may know why. I believe the time is over when you could still
blame education or lack of opportunities for it. I always thought that
culture, philosophy, hobbies and all these things not necessary for everyday
reproduction, are all substitutes for real life and that men for some reasons
tend to be happy with substitutes more than women. I actually thought women
have more chances to "really " live instead of having to go into artificial
substitutional life-forms. That it's a lack in their social characters that
makes men find refugee in culture. Women just don't need it the same way men
do, because they don't suffer the way men do.
My grandmother used to say "philosophy is a play of the male mind". I don't
know; I guess there is a lot that could be said against my way to see this;
all I know is, that men and women are not equal in their attitude towards arts
et al. Be it on the consumers side, or be it on the producers side. I think
the discussion style here in this list may all in all be polite and on a high
niveau of knowledge, but it's certainly not very "female". I really believe,
in an all-female Exotica list threads about why grooves in vinyl records have
pre-echoes would be impossible, whereas posts about how musicians look like
and what they wear and who they live with and so on would be more frequent.
And you know what: I would like it. I would like to know much more about the
female point of view than most women are willing to give. Because they keep it
to themselves, they consider their point of view as their secret weapon, part
of the big mystery of the female. Or maybe they don't dare to bring it into
the list, because they think it's unappropriate as long as there are men in
the (chat-) room. If the latter is the case in your case, now you know, it's
not the case in my case!
This' roughly why I think women don't post as much here as men do.

I am not so sure about this. Women do it, too...with clothes, dishes...all
utilitarian items. Of course, men may deal with these items...and women
may deal with records and "gear", too. Cite me a study, I may believe
it...but it certainly wouldn't make any difference to me. People should be
able to do what they want with their spare time and money no matter what
their gender...and be able to share their knowledge and opinions regardless
how trivial the facts and how baseless the concepts.
Just look back on some of the subjects discussed on this listserv and the
most interesting usually stem from someone's opinion initially judged
"stupid" or "ridiculous." I would guess that if the opinion hadn't have
been made, the REAL experts among us would have said nothing and thus the
rest of us would not have learned anything new. If it takes an uninformed
opinion to get some people to respond with interesting information, however
venomously, I'm all for it. It is too bad some of that information can't
be volunteered without the initial seed of dischord, but that is how some
people do things.
Where I work, we have been taught to ALWAYS raise issue with someone who
has incorrect facts, ideas or opinions. However, we have also been taught
how to avoid making it personal. It would be nice if people on this (or
any) listserv could avoid slamming a person just because his or her ideas
don't mesh. Simply saying "I don't agree and here are some reasons" would
make it a lot easier to read the postings.
Otherwise, some people and their "wrong" opinions might get the feeling
they shouldn't post or even be on the list. And without those opinions,
our discussions of interesting topics may not be quite as numerous.
Sorry, seems like I strayed a bit from the topic (or perhaps steered back
onto the previous one). Must have been something I had to say...even
though it really has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with what I want to see on

Beyond kitsch, Space Bop is one hour of full galactical wonder, and can
be heard every Sunday from 4 to 5 pm Eastern time on CKUT 90.3 FM in
Montreal, Canada, and on RealAudio (real time only, for now) at:
http://www.ckut.ca
As usual, all comments, questions, and feedback welcome.
Space Bop #90 & #91 The 2000 Funding Drive Shows
Yes, it's funding drive time at CKUT! Being a University station, and
not commercial radio, a hefty chunk of the station's funding comes from
listeners. So we get to spend 10 days trying to cajole people into
donating money to the station - in return for all sorts of cool gifts
(CDs, books, gift certificates, and this year we even have some
subscriptions to Cool & Strange Music to give away!) If you're
interested in pledging, check out the web site above for all relevant
info, including pledging on line. And if you just want to listen,
that's fine, too!
For the next two weeks, we've planned loosely defined shows, which will
feature some of our favourite releases. We want our listeners to
realize they will not hear much of this music on any other station (in
this city anyway!). So a few of the things we'll be sampling from:
Various - Get Easy Vol. 3 (The French Pops Collection) and Vol. 4 (The
German Pops Collection)
Various - Inflight Entertainment and Further Inflight Entertainment
Lord Sitar - Lord Sitar
Gert Wilden - I Told You Not To Cry
Various - Kinky Beats
The Bobby Hughes Experience - Fusa Riot
Mint Royale - On The Ropes
Los Chicharrrons - Conga Heaven, Bongo Hell!
Jacknife Lee - Muy Rico!
Gotz Alsmann - Gestatten
Der Plan - Geri Reig/Normalette Surprise
Stock, Hausen & Walkman - Organ Transplants
The Bad Examples - Electro Tiki
Dragibus - Barbapoux
Pascal Comelade & Bel Canto Orquestra - Live in Lisbon
We'll be back to our regular format for show #92 - all sorts of goodies
in store for that one!

Interesting theory. However it assumes that there are significantly fewer
women collectors than men and I believe that's only true for record
collectors, not collectors in general. I have no statistics but I'd accept
the speculation that the ratio of male collectors to female might be two
and a half to one. I'm not sure that's a dramatic enough difference to
demonstrate any profound difference in character.
I met many women record collectors on my journey but the women with the
biggest collections didn't come close to the size of some men's
collections. Not even far. They'd have to triple the size of their
collection to just to qualify for "far".
Why women collect records less frequently and collect fewer records we can
talk about in another post. But even though most of you won't like it, I'm
going to give you my "psychology for dummies" explanation for this
phenomenon, culled from many hours spent with smarter friends.
Warning: I never really felt I understood what the hell they were talking
about.
Here's the psychological explanation.
But first of all, you should know that people who think this way don't talk
about men versus women. They talk about individuals who are "sexuated" as
men and those who are "sexuated" as women. I'm not sure what sexuated
means but let's assume that it means the gender whose characteristics you
take on.
So not all men are sexuated as men. But at the same time most individuals
who are sexuated as men ARE men.
Got that? Not all men are men and not all women are women.
Accepting that we move on to the theory.
Men are obsessive. Women are hysterical.
Hysterical doesn't mean what you think it means. The difference between
the two concerns their relationship to the object.
An obsessive looks at the object and says "the object is greater than me".
The hysterical looks at the object and says "I am greater than the object"
So the obsessive surrounds himself with objects because his sense of
self-worth, to some degee, is derived from those objects. Or something
like that. No amount of objects can ever quite make the obsessive feel
whole. But he keeps trying.
The hysterical feels that she/he is greater than the object so she/he only
has the objects from which they can derive a practical use.
An hysterical's "record collection" would consist of one CD which they
would play until they realize they don't like it anymore and then they
would trade it in for another one.
I don't really understand this but that last description reminds me of a
lot of women I've known.
Here's something you almost never hear "Remember that guy with those twenty
five thousand exotica records? He left his wife!"
If you want this explained better by someone who actually understands it, I
can try and cajole one of them into giving it a shot.

Ideal's "Gaylord" from 1963? Hostess Twinkies? Oh, God!! I'm in heaven.
Excellent quality, highly informative book with fantastic photos. Beautifully
packaged and a STEAL to boot.
The reissue of the year hands down, bar-none as far as I'm concerned - GET
IT!!!

Time my brother, Time tells all. Can I ask if you are attached? Because at
this address, after 15 years of commitment, 2 -- make that 3--(RIP Alanna)
offspring, three major tragedies, several bright moments, and the process of
being in a continuous relationship, I can say with some (not all) certainty,
that a female point of view is as unknowable as a male point of view with
certain glittering generalities excepted. Mimi brought out the obvious; the
collector as comptroller construct. A woman is no more a mystery than a man
once you spend the requisite time in a relationship with one IMHO. We all
live, breathe, die by the same wants needs and mysterious chemical
interactions as the opposite. Yet we are socialized to react in far different
ways. And we generally adhere to the socialized expectations. I am convinced
however that a common human bond is lurking deep within the crevices of
programmed behavior. JB

any i should avoid? which should i begin with?
i recently picked up a compilation supervised by konishi yasuharu(of p5)
by okazaki hiroshi and his stargazers. the cd booklet is embossed and
contains 26 tracks. seems heavily EZ in my book. unfortunately the liner
notes are all in japanese so i have no idea the history of this group. but
the disc contains a version of "quiet village" with vocals(!), born free,
and i love her among others. does anyone have this and more importantly
does anyone have a translation in english of the japanese liner notes? its
been released on readymade records in japan.
thanks,

I got my copy yesterday, directly from Basta and I was thinking the same
thing: this has to be one of the most beautiful releases (I don't think
you can really call it a reissue) of the year. Even Basta will have a hard
time releasing something more impressing. A follow up to this double CD is
already in the works by the way.

What a coincidence! A friend from Japan just sent me a CD-R of it. In
fact, I received it only yesterday, so I have only played it once. Heavily
EZ indeed, but well worth your time. The cover of Quiet Village is very
good.
There are 2 other interesting releases in this series: 'Good night Tokyo -
a collection of Japanese clubpop music 1967-1972' and 'Midnight Tokyo - a
collection of Japanese clubjazz music 1966-1981'. Very groovy indeed. I
have no idea if these are available outside Japan.
WM, I'll mail you offlist about how to contact my Japanese friend, so he
can tell you more about Okazaki Hiroshi.

> >>Why aren't there more women who collect records and are eager to talk about

Okay, here's my .02, for what it's worth: this is a really major
generalisation, but from my experience, most women just don't seem to be
as interested in music as men, to start with. They tend to stick with
popular stuff, often more on the "lite" or "soft" side. I know when I
was spending my early teen years hanging out in alternative record
shops, listening to and buying everything from Pink Floyd and Led
Zeppelin to the New York Dolls and T-Rex, I was not doing it with my
female friends. They weren't interested in anything beyond the Bay City
Rollers and Osmonds. Sad, but true. How I ever got interested in this
music in the first place, I'm not sure. But music has always played an
important part of my life. I would say that for most females I know,
this is far from the norm. As a result, I'm glad when I see other women
on this list(or other music-related lists).
But back to the collecting part - if the original interest in music
isn't there, then it just follows that neither is the collecting part -
what's to collect? And while I do have a tendency to accumulate
records, I wouldn't classify myself as anything near to being a
collector. I just buy things because I love the music. And I'm glad
when I meet others who share my interests, regardless of whether they're
male or female.
Well, enough pontificating for a snowy Sunday morning
ciao,
cheryl

Hi, listers:
I just resurfaced from a month-long work wormhole, and
spent an hour going through accumulated posts -- and
ran to get my Wu-Tang name. I am the Visible Choirboy.
Last week, I had Luxuriamusic.com play all through one of my
classes, as an "example" of Internet-radio, but mostly so as to
plug it. Each time I go there, they're playing exactly what I want to
hear at that particular moment.
Last night, we went to see the fab, newly-reissued film noir
Nightmare Alley, which you should all go see if it comes your way.
It's set in the world of carnie mentalists, gypsy fakers and
sideshow geeks, and the new print is super.
Johanne and I are off to LA on April 29th for 10 days of r&r and
hiding from the telephone. I realize this is a floodgate kind of
question, but what should we do there?

Just picked up yet another oddity yesterday; A KPM library record called
"Sleight of Mind" from 1982, performed on the Fairchild computer instrument
by Dave Vorhaus! Still have to keep an eye out for those done by Ron Geesin
on this label. It is amazing the range of well known musicians that have
done things for these library records!

i know so little about it... story goes that waaaaay back in time,
in the (late?) middle ages, some foreign army (Spain?) attacked Brussels,
put some gunpowder bomb under the city walls, and lighted the fuse. then
along came this little boy, and he urinated onto the fuse, thus saving the
city, hooray!
his female counterpart, Jeanneke Pis, is from much more recent
origin. i first heard about here in the 1980's, and she was not much more
than a promo thing of a restaurant. i never heard that record that was
mentioned here.
Mannekin Pis indeed has a big wardrobe. he gets clothes as presents
from all kinds of organisations and foreign countries.
