Okay, so we had a great discussion about the Brass Ring (I haven't written =
up that summary yet................*sigh*..........).

Anyway, let's talk about this "Blue Ribbon Strings" outfit.  Now, I've =
only found one of their albums and it pretty much sucks..........EXCEPT =
for two wild 'n wacky numbers where everyone must've agreed; "Okay, we've =
played all of these Spanish numbers with a straight-on ho-hum approach, =
let's try something a little bit *DIFFERENT*!!!!"  And by different, what =
you get is a wild paced, frenetic genre-crossed sound explosion.

From "Viva Espana" there's a track called "Winter Sleighride" or something =
that includes horse sound effects, a back-beat beat (for part of the song =
anyway.....) and a warp back and forth between swing and a straight-on =
string compostion ala 101 Strings..........

Anybody have any similar experience (LUCK may be the right word) with any =
other Blue Ribbon Strings releases??

Ok, now Im confused.

I called this number and there was no answer.  So I called local info for
this place, asked for HoJos.  I got a rude woman who said that they were not
associated with the Tiki "Motor Lodge".  She had no clue about the place and
was audibly annoyed that I was bothering her about it.  She said that the
Tiki was a mile away from them and that her place were just a restaurant and
not a resort.

She did say that the Tiki resort didn't open until May.  Could be why there
was no answer.  But not even a machine?!?

So I guess we need to wait till the on-season?  Or at least the thaw.  The
Waikiki in Lake George sounds like a summer place in the Catskills to
me.....

Any input/insight?  Is this worth pursuing?

Okay,

Just did some looking on the Lake George page =

and I called the HoJos 1-800 number.  I confirmed that they are closed =
for
the season, but still in operation and still called the Tiki Resort.  =
Good
news so far.  The nice lady at HoJos will be sending me a brochure =
about
this specific resort in 7-10 days.  Hopefully it will have enough =
pictures
for me to tell what is up.  I will be certain to let the list know the =
news.


The midsummer rates are pretty decent.  2 person 2 double beds (why a =
couple
needs 2 beds is beyond me) $89us  and for an efficiency suite $109us.=20

Hopefully more to follow.  Apologies for the semi-offlist tangent of =
these
posts.  But wouldn't we all like to stay in a tiki resort without =
having to
go to Miami, or Hawaii, or Bali. =20

???  I thought that the Tiki info was being compiled from just films.  If
it's historical Tiki info you want, I can tell you for sure that the
former Marriott Hotel in Philadelphia on City Line Avenue used to have a
restaurant called The Kono Kai that was DEFINITELY all Tiki in theme,
complete with flaming torches on the outside and audible music you could
hear from the parking lot.  Unfortunately, the hotel building is still
there but the last time I was by it, it was no longer Marriott and the
Kono Kai had been replaced with something else.  But it was a landmark in
the area for at least 20-25 yrs.

Also, the Polynesian Village Resort Hotel at Walt Disney World is very
Tiki-ish.  It has longhouses named after all the Polynesian islands, and
the decor in the Great Ceremonial House (lobby of hotel) has what has to
be one of the world's largest indoor atriums, complete with growing
palms, banana plants, and other rain forest plants that reach up to the
second story.  Definitely a tropical paradise.  Carved tikis are
everywhere, themed restaurants abound in the place, plus an outdoor luau
is performed nightly undercover, but near the beach area.

Not familiar with the Miami Beach area at all as I've never been to South
Florida, only Central.

If the CD reissue of "Voice Of The Xtabay" on the Right Stuff/EMI label is still around, I'd say get that. Besides "Xtabay" being the album done w/ Les Baxter, the CD also includes the "Inca Taqui" album. For myself, I'd rather have this than the comp. And I do, so no problem.

Recently, a menu from a restuarant called THE OMNI HUT appeared mysteriously
in the car of the former exotica-list subscriber known only as The Caucasion
Sensation.  Anyway, the place appears to be very "tiki".  There was a story
on the back of the menu about the proprietor -- apparently a WWII vet who
started the place after returning from service in Hawaii.  The menu appeared
to me to have a very 70's edge to it with paintings of various styled tikis
throughout.  Very intriquing and apparently still open for business in
SMYRNA, TENNESSEE.  I guess one of the odder things about the place is that
it is "BYOB" (no kidding... it says it own the menu).  I guess they lost
their liquor license somewhere along the way?

I'm in the midst of planning a trip (for possible inclusion in my
aforementioned documentary) and was wondering if anybody on the list has
been to (or at least heard of) the The Omni Hut.  Anyone?

One strand of lost Easy listening in the 80's at least this side of the pond
has to be the mellow country tones of people like Daniel O'Donnell.  Hugely
popular, in a limited scene,  but has all that romantic smoothness of the
best crooners.

Personally not to my taste but as someone said,  give it 10 years.  Of
course Toms still doing it,  Even Roger Whittaker does a new LP once in a
while ( I heard him played on a Las Vegas station between Francis and Dino,
so hes gotta be cool, right?)

The "E-Z Listening Disc."  Released on Ryko, and as far as I know it's still
in print.

I just ordered this about one month ago - it was something I always wanted (I
remembered those inside sleeve offers all these years too), finally ordered, and
love it.  It is on the Rykodisc label (I bought mine from cdnow.com)  and
contains 19 songs that were recorded in ez style in 1981 and 1984.  It's nice to
see that someone was honoring the easy style during the 80's.

Does anyone remember the show Fridays?  a Friday night version of Saturday Night
Live that ran a few years in the early 90's?  This show did a great job of
finding musical guests - Devo was on several times.  I remember on one of their
guest appearances the cast did a take-off of a TV commercial selling Devo's
greatest hits -- only they were done easy listening, somewhat Andrews Sisters
style.  I remember at the time liking those lite versions as much as the
originals.  The Devo 'E-Z- Listening Disc' are not these versions, but they are
still fun.

It reminds me of a CD that I am aching to get. I heard of a CD comp of songs
compiled by a prankster who put ads int the back of magazines like Rolling
Stone asking for demo's of original songs.

Did he compile the BEST on the CD? Oh, no... This guy (these people) had the
good sense to include only the worst of the worst.  Just my kinda thing.

Peaceful World- The Rascals... reissue of incredible
personal fave with exotic jazzy jungle groove.
originally a double album, so now a full cd with
Gauguin Tahiti cover art and guest artists like Alice
Coltrane/harp, Ron Carter/bass, Hubert Laws/flutes.
1st 4 tracks just ok, but rest of album is stellar
with Little Dove, Mother Nature Land, and the seminal
21 minute closer, Peaceful World. gem! anyone else
know it?

Fascinoima- Jon Hassell... new release of exotica
tinged experimental ethereal versions of Nature Boy,
Caravanesque, etc. Try it, you'll like it.

Lei of Stars- Hawaii's Legendary Artists
(cordinternational.com) 20 evocative tracks, all
classics that take you back to pre-statehood Hawaii
when
life was truly paradise.

Last, try Alice Coltrane's "Ptah El Daoud" for the "so
sweet it hurts" effect you seek. otherworldly
sparkling fusion in the best possible way.check my

Oy oy gonna embarrass myself here but what the hell...saw a film from the
late 40s/early 50s, very noir but not one of the best noirs. Something
tells me it may be an Ida Lupino picture (one she directed, not a player).
Setting: Sinister postwar LA. Plot: the heroine goes on a date with a guy.
He takes her to a Tiki themed restaurant owned by a Chinese guy, plies her
with Cantonese food and exotic drinks. She gets sloshed, is lured back to
his bachelor pad, fends off his pass, passes out, then awakens to find her
date....murdered!

The restaurant/bach pad scenes are all I recall. Saw it on video, not cable.
m.ace, Prof. Straw, any other clear-thinking cineastes, does this plot
fragment ring any bells?

I remember one appearance with the treadmills made quite an impression on me.

It's a good time to be a Devo fan nowadays.  Rhino recently issued an expanded
version of Devo Live and a Mothersbaugh Christmas album on their Handmade
label, with another 2CD "Greatest Hits" due from Warner soon and a 2CD
strays-and-rarities mopup due on Handmade soon after.

Seeing the Frisell album mentioned there reminded me to ask -- has anyone
released the Buster Keaton films he's done music for, *with* his music
accompanying them?  I saw him do "Go West" (among others) live in Minneapolis
a long while back; the CDs they've released of the music alone are nice but
it's really a more complete experience with the movie and the music together.
This is such an obvious application for DVD too, they could have multiple
soundtracks (with one of them being Frisell's of course)!

I've got a video tape of that appearance a friend of mine made back when it
was originally aired.  It's great.  I also remeber being blown away by King
Crimson on that show!!  Ofcourse, Saturday Night Live is where I first saw
many of those great early Devo videos.

What do the other folks on the list think of the two Devo Hardcore cds?  I
really like the first one but the second one doesn't do much for me.  Anyone
ever seen the bootleg LP that has a photo with one of the guys being
pleasured by a woman on the cover?  I couldn't believe that thing when I saw
it, and I couldn't afford it at the time (many years ago).

Okay, the major list-related TV event this week is AMC's documentary on
Louis Prima, airing Saturday night. The times are a bit dodgy -- I've seen
conflicting listings -- but 9:45pm and 4:00am seem reasonable (eastern
time). Maybe things will clear up closer to airtime.

Each showing is followed by the Louis/Keely/Sam movie, "Hey Boy! Hey Girl!"
(1959). Again the times are dodgy, but 11:05pm and 5:20am seem like the
better bets. Double-check it with your own sources.

For the Lynch/Badalamenti fans out there, Bravo US is rolling "Twin Peaks"
back out, beginning this Friday night at 8:00pm and 11:00pm (also 6:00pm
Saturday).

Also this week, too many movies to drag out on-list... Godzilla, Gamera,
Elvis, a couple from Fellini... If you're interested, check the "TV
