I'm probably the biggest Comelade fan on the list, so I guess I'll
answer this one!  He plays piano, along with a variety of toy
instruments.  The music is a little hard to describe - somewhat quirky,
although each individual release does vary.  Sometimes it's tango, but
most of the times it's pretty hard to classify.

I would try to listen to at least one of the CDs if you can, to get an
idea of whether or not you like his music - I can't think of much to
compare him to.  "33 Bars" is a good CD - my personal favourites are
"Ragazzin' The Blues" and "El Primitivismo", which are typical of much
of his music, and "Haikus du Piano" (which is a must-have - cover
versions of things like "Smoke On The Water", Faust's "The Sad
Skinhead", Jonathan Richman's "Egyptian Reggae", Eno's "Put A Straw
Under Baby", "96 Tears" etc. - all on toy piano alone, all very short
pieces, incredible sound!).  The only one I wouldn't necessarily buy is
"Danses et chantes de Syldavie", which is a compilation of music from
his other releases.

It's not "exotica" sound, but certainly worth at least listening to.

they playing a long set from 12.00-5.30 in the morning. starting with
ultra groovy 60`s orchestra-tracks
put in some beaty (johnny dorelli -arriva la bomba) and funky (wess & the
airedales -crazy) stuff and turn to some new stuff (ca.20 % from the set )
between dowwnbaet and breakbeat (or something like that that) incl. their own
great sitar-monster-hit „exploration“, „the hip
sheik“ and unrealased tracks (from their forthcomming album that is in work and
will come out in the summer). then returned to groovy 60‘s again and
ended easy. the set incl. a lot great and unknown stuff that would fill up
easy more new volumes of inflight entertainment compilations. i personally
danced the most time and enjoyed it a lot. a part of the set can be heard on
radio in munich on M 94.5 (Kabel 94.90) or under www.afk.de/m945/ in the
Internet at 22.00

They produced that incredibly strange Most Wanted/Unwanted Song CD.

If by "original" you mean the recording then that doesn't matter.  It would still be an infringement on whoever owns the publishing rights to the song (which is not the same thing as a recording).  I'm not sure that Jagger & Richards get anything other than songwriter mechanicals since this issue was forced by their former manager Allen Klein (a notoriously difficult person; he's the reason "El Topo" and "Holy Mountain" have been unavailable in the US for years and years).  And the reason he got the full royalty amount was because they hadn't bothered to clear the copyright usage and because he also owned the copyright in the recording as well.  Whatever we might think about the ethics or moral issues, there's nothing bizarre or unreasonable about this from a legal standpoint.

another list to which I belong, folks have complained
if I DARE to even mention a MOOG (as if MOOGS have

Whenever I see your name attached to new finds, Jimmy, I prepare myself for
jealousy.  Or is that envy?  Or maybe I just want to know when you're going

I'm only guessing that the Bernard Purdie would make me jealous.  But I
know that the Vincent (Vinnie) one kills me.  And Mandingo is so good, I

I don't know what the point of posting is when all I have to say is "I'm
jealous" but then again, if we all lived together (?) and this was "show
and tell", one of the reasons you'd show would be to get some reactions
like this.
Or that's why I'd do it anyway.

Last night someone gave me the soundtrack LP to "M Squad" and traded me
"Sweet Smell of Success" for a record to be named later, but probably this
very cool record I have on MGM's "Latino" series.
And still, I'm not satisfied.

When I first got into this stuff, the "M Squad" album, inexplicably, was one
of the easiest to find (in Southern Ontario thrift-stores, anyways).   How
rare is it these days?

Well if you want to make me a tape, feel free.  If I end up with a yearning
for a few truly good things, that's manageable.
I've had my comments/complaints quoted back to me so many times now, I feel
like I need to make it clear that I don't care if the new sampling/remix
folks out there don't want to make the music I might want to hear.
My only complaint was with the hype.  With the exception of a couple of
cuts, I don't think the Electro Lounge compilation for instance, delivered
anything like it seemed to be promising.
And it just reminded me of so much stuff out there - in all forms of
art/media etc - in these (postmodern) days.
Artists today are willing to make reference to ANYTHING if it sounds cool
or makes them sound cool or obscure or well read or interesting.
"Yeah I sort of feel like my work is a combination of William Burrough's
cut-up technique and Charlton Heston's character in Touch of Evil".
Oh really Celine?

So really, I'm just whining about the fact that occasionally I fall for the
hype.  I was  raised to spot obscure and cool references, to look for
artists who were apparently influenced by some of the same stuff that
inspired me.
Once upon a time, if an artist namechecked the books of Hubert Selby Jr. or
the music of Elmer Bernstein or Cassavettes' films, it seemed to mean
something.
You could see it/read it/hear it in their work.  Or at least you could
smell it somewhere on the surface.
Because, after all, namechecking Hubert Selby didn't actually sell
books/records/films.  So why else would you mention it?

Now that's out the window.  And I've gotten old.

         i have had the worst imaginable experiences with a philips CD-R
870 (now discontinued). in 1 year time, i tried 3 machines, and the "best"
one only worked for 4 months before dying. when i demanded my money back,
they were so kind to upgrade me freely instead to the top model 860, which
has been working flawlesly for about 4 months now...

        if you buy a philips model, you have to know that you might get
reliable working only when using philips brand CD-R discs, which cost a lot
more than other brands.

    maybe i had the bad luck of truying out their first model - full of
bugs?

Pascal Comelade is an Avant Garde composer who uses lots of toy pianos and
other found objects.
He is not for everyone but I love him alot.  I have his original French
albums he did way back in the eighties.
I need the "33 Bars" CD.  If you don't want that one let me know.  I'ts
unusual to see these in a used bin.
I paid $20 each for 4 different CD's!!!  Oh, By the way "El Primitivismo" is
one of my favorites.  He does a pretty clever version of "Honky Tonk Woman"
with the toy piano.  Great Stuff!!  The WFMU catalog used to carry him also
but has since been deleted.  Hope this helps?

The system is greedy.  Even if the Stones had voluntarily given up their
rights, I'm sure money would have been extorted some other way.
I just finished negotiating for rights to put three songs in my film and it
basically killed me.  So far, I only have "festival rights", meaning for
this price I can show the film in festivals.
(Now if only a festival wanted to show it...)
But that price alone is shocking.
And the thing that kills me is that the prices bear no relationship to the
modest budget of my film.
And they bear no relationship to the obscurity of song or artist.
I have to pay more for an obscure late Hank Thompson cut than for a Curtis
Mayfield cut.
I have to pay more for John Martyn's performance of a song - not including
the price for the song itself - than I do for Curtis's tune and performance
together.

I know all the arguments about how I'm making my film on their backs.  But
their should be some relationship to reality and the cost of three songs
shouldn't threaten to match the entire post production budget for the film.

Hello Exotica Mailing List,

Please allow me to introduce myself--my name is B.J. Major and that is
what I like to be referred to as (real name appears in email address only
for gender identification purposes!)  I am pleased to be on this list
because I've been directed here by someone who says that I will be among
friends.  I hope he is correct!

During the Christmas holiday, I put a Walter Wanderley Pictorial
Discography online at my website (URL below). It is currently 4 pages
long and covers the Verve, A&M, & GNP/Crescendo years in their entirety,
along with CD reissues, other import CDs, guest appearances, & Brazilian
recordings.  New items that have been added since this Discography went
online are a clickable index, Interview section and more Walter photos.
I expect the Interview section to expand over the next few months to
include the thoughts of even more people who either worked with Walter or
knew him personally.

My primary purpose in putting the Discography online was to provide
complete track listings, personnel information, and full color photos of
the releases (inside and out).  This information did not exist on the web
in as complete a form prior to this (even www.allmusic.com is missing
several Wanderley releases in their own listing!).  My secondary purpose
is to serve as an overall fan site for Walter and his work--something
that also was very lacking on the internet.  To that end, I have included
Walter's biographical information, tidbits & trivia, the Interview
section, and links to other Wanderley information pages on the web.  All
this immediately follows the Discography portion of the site.  Also--for
the record, I have been a fan of Walter's music since 1966 and definitely
not as a result of the recent "lounge" movement of the late 90s.

At this time, I am seeking additional information about Walter (both
biographical and career info) from those who either knew him personally,
worked with him, or are simply a rabid fan of his music the way I am.
Something tells me I'm not alone in loving Walter's music.  If you have
an interesting story to tell about your own Wanderley interest or you
would like to participate in an email interview with me that I would then
add to the site, please get in touch.  Thanks!

These two are re-releases Charlie and I paid 11.99 for Mandingo and 8.99 for
Pretty Purdie...These are records that I got today, not really finds. Did I
say finds? Sorry, brainwashed temporarily. I guess its best just to say
"Here's what I bought and paid for today."

You're wrong. Some folks perform collage music live. Using computers,
samplers, tapes, crappy keyboards and more.
There are several pieces of software aimed at live manipulation of
soundbits... for example one of them was included for free in a cd-rom sold
with Coldcut's album "Let us play".

Okay, I've considered changing the name.  What do you
guys think about "The Kahunas?"

So far only seven people have submitted nominations in
the past week or so.  Not very many, alas.  And none
from otherwise often outspoken individuals.  It'd sure
help to include your all's input on the nominations, I
think!

I would really like to make some really catty remark about this particular
liner-note writer who has already won one Grammy at least - and we'll never
be allowed to forget it - but I'm trying to be an adult.  I also know at
least one other listmember who would like to read the catty remarks and
even contribute his own but we'll just have to keep it private and laugh to
ourselves.

I have six Mauriat records and certainly there aren't a lot of tunes as
rockin - or interesting - as "You keep me hangin on".  But not all the
tunes are light or stringy either.  There are some other rockers spread
throughout all the records, especially "More Mauriat".
The thing is though, for the most part I like the cheesy listening stuff,
especially his.  It's a taste you can acquire if you want to though I'd
understand it if you don't.
First you have to learn to love strings, or at least like them enough that
they won't ruin a tune for you.
I'm not assuming anything but I know for myself that once upon a time, if
it had a big string section, I virtually ignored it.
It opens up a whole new world.  If you like Mauriat's arrangements, you'll
probably like a lot more of his material if you can learn to love the strings.

Theres a movie out called "E Allora Mambo"   There's also a sountrack from
1999 on Irma La Douce.  Its various artists old and new and the title song is
magnificant, really a great great Mambo,   sure to send any mambo lover onto
a frenzy.  Its by Vinicio Capossela,  who is he??
Any one know about this guy?

Some of the other tracks I have especially the 2 Sumacs, Malamambo No 1 & Tki
Rari.  I also have the 2 P5 cuts  Theres 18 cuts and with old stuff by
performers like Dizzy mixed with newer mambos and the selection is surprising
and fun.  This is nice addition to my mambo records.    When you're talking
Mambo Perez is the King and this selection avoids him and the obvious, making
it one of my favorite soundtracks last year.

Having a "Mambo Frenzy" in the Big Easy

You're right...I actually did see such a guy "performing" on his

I do like the arrangements and I didn't mean to generalize all his stuff as
stringy or cheesy.  There's quite a bit that isn't either and on repeated
listens more of the texture comes out.  After about four listenings I was
hooked.  You're right that there is a complexity in the arrangement that's
quite tasty. I'll be tracking more of his stuff down.

You should all thank the tiki gods (or the pagan idol of your choice)
for the Solomon-like wisdom our revered administrator Nibble has
exercised in his years overseeing this list (among many others IIRC). He
only surfaces on rare occasions and now i know why - he's busy watching
CHiPs!

I remember when a certain ex-member's shilling here got so out of hand
that Lazlo actually had to establish a policy limiting such posts to x
per month. It did the trick, but maybe that individual is now reviewing
DVD's for Reel.com - check out this blurb for Vampyros Lesbos:

Here are the details (though vague in places) about the Astro
Sounds LP as compiled from a couple of Jack Diamond (there's
that name again) posts from a few years back:

The Astro Sounds from Beyond the Year 2000 LP (1967) is
mostly tracks from an album by The Animated Egg (Alshire-1967)
 -- plus three tracks from one by Haircut & the Impossibles
(Somerset-1967) -- with added sound effects, echo, etc. and of
course the 101 Strings Orcherstra.

Tracks from all 3 of these records are scattered about on different
Alshire/Somerset releases like Million Seller Hits of Today by 101
Strings (which includes two tracks using song titles from the
Animated Egg release but are actually the Astro Sounds cuts (with
strings, et al.))

It's called "What's Good for the Goose" and the Pretty Thin... uh, I
mean the Electric Banana were actually *in* the film. In fact, their
scenes are pretty much the only reason you'd wanna watch it.

There's a readily available CD bootleg of all the Electric Banana
material, which ranges from OK to really quite good. My friend, who
is a Pretty Things fanatic says that it's his favorite of theirs, second
only to "SF Sorrow."

It's unfortunate that this material has been booted, however, as the
band themselves are apparently working on a legit release and the
bootleg has seriously undermined the market for such a CD.
