the crap out of me. I want to hear more of these strange and distant bands.
Harpers Bizarre, Association, Now Its a Beautiful Day, Cowsills. What is it
all about.
I finished a mix of some very funky British easy stuff last night on
minidisk and I want to send it to someone. Anybody want to swap a CD full
of this sunshine/soft/bubblegum stuff so I can learn to distinguish one
from another for a CD (I'll find someone to burn it) of said British stuff?
Perhaps we could start rotating!

Having had the opportunity to visit Berlin a few months back I'd
have to confer with Moritz's opinion on the "Schmatzwald", though
with the rider that hallucinogens are an optional enhancement but
not required. The name is a play on "Schwatzwald" ie. The Black
Forest and yes there is a Heimat section on the wall complete with
elk heads, men in lederhosen, etc. Funny my first reaction was
seeing the Tiki section was thinking instantly of how Moritz would
like this place!

In case people are not aware, Gordon and Laura are not Germans
but (yes) Canadians; Gordon being an accomplished musician
know for more serious works, but mighty handy with that
Hammondesqe (Hammonds are scarce  and prohibitively expensive
in Europe we learned) organ, and Laura from all of what I saw of her
creations, an accomplished artist. This is also the home of the
KBZ collective and you can see photos of Gordon & Laura on
Volume 1 of The Exotic Trilogy. For us the visual and auditory
experience was further enhanced by being able to meet the people
that ran and created it. It was certainly the highlight of our trip and
worth a visit to Berlin!  Of course the best part was coming back
only to find out Gordon's sister is a close friend of Cheryl's sister
back in Toronto.  As they say, it's a small world!

I love this song after hearing it twice on the Ultra Lounge Cha-Cha CD. 2
versions of it on the CD. One by Julie London and the other by Dean Martin.

I love the Dean Martin version. If you ever find DM's album "Cha-Cha
D'amor" where Sway was originally recorded pick it up. Arranged by Nelson
Riddle.


Also: The Blue Hawaiians do the song on a couple of their CD's. Mello
surf/hawaiian.

Those four early Eno records are just about the most amazing
recordings I know, and they will live on for many years without
sounding in the least dated. I was really saddened to see him move
in the ambient direction but I kind of like his version of "The Lion
Sleeps Tonight" in spite of all that's been said. I'm a bit of a sucker
for beat boxes so maybe that explains it.  Still for anyone looking
for a return to the old Eno I'd suggest listening to "Nerve Net". It's
from around 1992 and has that old Eno sound is very much
present... Proof that there's more of it in him and not to give up!

I think it appropriate that the suggestions for examples of what you refer
to were made by Br. Cleve, as I consider Combustible Edison to be
among the best examples of this "new music made in the spirit of the
old" and it should be a standard by which to compare others.

I can say I've listened to a few things, as it was me that initially
prompted the response from Br. Cleve, relating to The Bobby
Hughes Experience, which turned out to be most interesting (Will
is listening to it now so he can offer his own opinion, which I know
you will trust). Still, I'm struck by how few of the names Br. Cleve
mentions, mainly in this most recent list, that I know, and how few
I've seen offered in stores or catalogues.  I feel a tremendous rush
coming on, much as when the new wave hit in the late 70's and a
whole new world opened up!

Both our last "Space Bop" of the century, and first of the new, were
trying to probe into exactly this area, ie. looking for new and unique
directions and use of sounds, rather than just playing our favourite
discs of the year/decade/century.  I'll send you a tape of these two
shows but you have to remember that they are limited by what we
have in our collection and by our own limited exposure to what's
out there. Someday (if we ever get around to it!) a lot of this
information along with selected shows themselves, should be on a
website for reference, but at the rate we've been going it may not
happen in the immediate future...

How's the recording on this, Keith? Agree with your opinion: it's their
best. The prepared are melodic and gorgeous, not gimmicky. Is the cover

Oh hell, the review is short, I may as well copy it here:
 Either this CD was recorded @ 1/2 speed or I have fast ears.

                     This is the worst CD I have ever listened to. The insertion of various sundry instruments with
                     the piano, has the quality effect of playing a tuba with a violin. The entire rendition of each

The Love Machine: Electronic Music To Blow Your Mind By!!

Sounds a lot like Jimmy Haskel's "Countdown": late 1950's style guitar and
organ instro with a lot of electronic sounds and effects added. Personally,
I think "Countdown" is better because there the electronic and other zounds
are more part of the music, while here The Love Machine is more like
playing a game of "now let's see how many weird sounds we can put on top of
this cheesy instro music". Still amazing stuff though!

bought it from Dusty Groove, but Jack Diamond sells it too.

I borrowed it from somebody once but the LP was distorted and shaped like a

I found this at the Salvation Army and given the fact that I was almost
certain it wouldn't live up to its title, I was very pleasantly surprised.
For what I paid and for what it could have been, this is a pretty good record.
It's on Design.  They could call something "a pot full of psychedelic pop"
and it could end up being a pot fulla ray conniff singers.
I admit that it's a bit silly to factor in things like how you got a
record, how much you paid etc when you assess its musical value.  But I do
think if I was set up by one of jack's typical reviews and paid real money,
I'd be a tad disappointed.
It is kind of psychedelic and it's kind of electronic.  But the electronic
sounds are really just that - sounds.  They're superimposed over the music
rather than integrated into it.  And the music those sounds are poured on
top of is your basic generic instrumental rock quartet, sounding a bit like
Iron Butterfly jamming for the soundcheck.
I think I'm defeating my own purpose here, making it sound interesting in
spite of myself.
Okay I give up.  This is essential.  Everyone should have it.

 Since I got such an enthusiastic response, both liking and loathing to my
"Disadvantages of Me" remix.  Here's another for ya'll to enjoy or be
awestruck by or deride or equate to animal excrement.

This one was to be submitted to Bungalow Records for the up coming Peter
Thomas "Warp Back To Earth" second remix CD.  I ended up submitting another
song, which I now like even less then this one.

This one is titled, "Fire Escape, Part 2"  It was made strictly from about 40
Peter Thomas samples some of which were run through a drum machine, so this
one will sound especially bad to some of ya'll.  Plus it's 32kbps at 22kHz
which pumps the bass oddly.  Listen at your own risk.

Hi everybody! (Hi Dr. Nick!)

It came to mind that as much as we all dig weirdo excellente' music... it
would stand to figure we also may enjoy weirdo video.  And , seeings how
we're on the virge of a big swapping of spit via the CDR trades, why not list
some video for trade as well.
I'll spin first.  Here's some of my offers:

Two, 2hour compilation "samplers" if you will, titled: "Cable Abcess"
In it you will find lots of bad cable comedians, singers, a show called "Sock
Hop With Cop" (singular) that featured cops with guns on their belts dancing
to Tiffany's version of "Locomotion" with a rabble of turgid youth...
ranters, ravers, weirdos, a profile of Rodney Allen Rippey, MORE! Lots of fun.

JOY JUNCTION:
Several hours of this lunatic religious kids show shot in Clearwater FL. in
the mid 1980's and still shown today every Saturday Morning.  Features
characters such as:
Sherriff Don, Wittler Dan, Papillon (the artist), Professor Clodhopper (the
"scientific" nitwit perpeturating the myth that science is dumb), and by far,
hands down the most frightening ventriloquist ever and his doll "Marty."
They both wear red and white checkered shirts.  The dolls hairdo is a cross
between Frankensteins hair and your worst case scenario sideburns.  So is
his.  I do not know what is scarier... watching them perform... or thinking
about the two of them rehearsing alone in their sparsely decorated room lit
by a shadeless lamp... the guy in a stained tank top undershirt... the faint
smell of b.o. he's worked up trying to JUST get his schtick down right...

ALSO:
I have videos by EBN (Emergency Broadcast Network), DEVO, Laurie Anderson,
The Society of The Spectacle film... (incredible film! check out the link)

Hello, Im new to this mailing list and after reading for a few weeks
I thought I'd expose myself.

A few months ago I started picking up Hawaiian records in the local
Goodwills and Sally Anns. Im not even sure why, as I don't have a working
record player at the moment. I think originally just for the cool cover art
and liner notes. I have about 30 or so now which I havent listened to
(except very quietly without an amp - just on the record player hooked up
to speakers going bzz bzz bzz) yet Im obsessed with getting more more more.

My other new obsession is making pilgrimages to Tiki bars - I live in Toronto
(which is completely tiki-less) but drove to Columbus, Ohio, just for the
Kahiki, and on my Christmas/New Years  trip to Tokyo I also checked out the
Tiki Tiki in Yokohama. Next up is the Hut in Pontiac, Michigan, and Jardin Tiki
in Montreal.

Funny ha-ha or funny peculiar?
Or is it a special British meaning for "funny?" A few years ago my
family shared a vacation condo near DisneyWorld with some English
friends of ours. I found their young daughter to be delightfully,
engagingly wacky. I made the error of telling my friend, the mom, that I

found her daughter "funny." I've *never*  *ever* received a look like
the one she gave me. So does "funny" have some local meaning?

Anyway, I know you dislike the obits. I know it, you've said it and I've

heard it. I've prefaced all obits with [obit] so you'd never have to
read anything you didn't want. I continue to post them because of the
many many many e-mails, on-list and off-, that have asked me to
continue. I also include obits that aren't exotica-related but do relate

to the interests of people on the list. In other words, I post based on
the listees and not the list itself.

Now, I don't find death "funny" at all. I don't find an obituary for an
obituary writer to be inherantly "funny" or (misusing the word)
"ironic." I found this obit of interest because of the contributions of
the man. Perhaps you'd like to re-read this paragraph from the obit and
you'll see why:
        Thomas began writing obituaries full time in 1995 after serving
as a police reporter, a rewrite man, a society news reporter and a
sports writer. He was credited with using a fresh approach to
writing obituaries, finding key details to illuminate lives that
might otherwise have been overlooked or underreported.

I recently purchased the Philips 765CDR (this is the dual-deck model) and am
*very* pleased with it.  The real upside to these home system components is
that you can burn real-time, as opposed to a burner on your computer where
you must first save the LP tracks to your hard drive as .wav files (or
similar files) and then burn them to CD from your hard drive.  It also burns
CD to CD at 2x speed, which is slower than some computer burners but still
totally adequate.

Additionally, the CDR-DA [CDR Digital Audio]media is drastically dropping in
price. If you don't know what I'm talking about -- home system component
burners use a different type of CD media than computer burners and the media
has historically been priced at $3 - $4 per CD.  However, I recently bought
several 10-packs of CDR-DA media with jewel cases (Maxell) for $20 per
10-pack -- that's $2.00 per CD, only about $0.50 more than you'd pay for a
10 pack of standard CD-Rs with jewel cases.  And on top of that, you don't
encounter the "unreadable" errors with the CDR-DA media that were the topic
of discussion in this group back in December.

On the other hand, if you like to spend hours tinkering with software, if
your records are in bad condition and you want to clean them up
electronically, or if you also want to burn data, then the computer burners
are probably your cup of tea.

I have a new CD burner and on my Mac, I don't have to save as a .wav or
any other kind of file; I just drag the cuts I want off each cd onto my
desktop and then burn the CD. I can burn at 6x so it takes 15 minutes or
less to burn a 74 min. CD. I'll bet the same can be done on a PC, too.

I don't know much about Hawaiian music but I have about 300 Hawaiian records
which I think is a large collection

They are all lps from the 50s to the 80s
but mostly 59 - late 60s

One of my favorites of the more straightforward stuff is
The Polynesians
I liked them initially because they were the house band at The Polynesian
restaurant in Torrance, CA (which is also where I grew up - Torrance, not The
Polynesian restaurant)

but came to like their music too

they put out about 4 lps on Crown and then there are a few more with
additional members and titles such as Hawaiian Paradise or something like
that and you don't find out it is them until you read the label on the lp or
their name is small on the cover

Hello all...

I am getting closer to getting the Exotica Archive off the ground. This
will be a place for me to write about Exotica (in the narrowest sense),
with photos, interviews (if I can get any), essays, etc. It celebrates
the "classic" Exotica music of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Les Baxter,
etc.  (This site is in no way affiliated with the Exotica Mailing List
per se.)

I am working on a nice logo, but need a 10 word slogan for the site.
Nothing is coming to me, but maybe all you fine folks can get me over
the hurdle.  Something like "Celebrating the Exotic Music of the 1950's"
or "Celebrating the music of Martin Denny" "From Hawaii to the Tiki
Room, Exotica Lives on".

In appreciation, I will now give you a sneak preview... check out some
of the photos (completely unannoted at this point) from my recent trip
to Waikiki.

Also, being the gadget freak that I am, I have been goofing with with a live
streaming webcam - I hope it will add some flavor to upcoming netcasts.
Right now it's as exiting as watching paint peel, but I letting it roll, to

Lou, perhaps you should go to www.onelist.com and create your own
obituaries mailing list. Then you and others could post obituaries there
instead of forcing them down our throats (of the 123 emails I've received
from you via the list since the 23rd September, 73 have been obituaries).
Anybody from the exotica mailing list who is interested in receiving
continuing obituaries could sign up, as could those other Internet users
who take an interest in non-exotica related posts about the lives of those
recently departed. I personally would not sign up, but I'm sure that there
is probably a market out there for this sort of thing.
