I really enjoyed the old list discussion about recent lp finds. There was
so much to learn from these posts and all the vinyl collectors seemed to be
so
knowlegable and so willing to contribute their knowledge to the list.
There was Jessica from Pennsylvania who use to come up with so much. Even if
younew the stuff it was interesting to learn what was available at what
price, like Ottos past today.
A few years ago one of the more influential posts for me came from Jill
who was in las Vegas and was happy to find an Association album. I
scratched my head wondering if the Association album was that good. Because
of this post I know better.
I personally don't respond to some of the vinyl posts because I am pretty
unfamiliar with many of the lps. Perhaps the list membership has changed
so much that people are not responding to your posts Nat because they too are
unfamiliar with your finds or they have discussed the artists before. I
don't know, I really don't have a strong view point on why its changed.
I buy vinyl on 6th sense or knowledge glleamed from the recent finds post.
Today I purchased
Encounter With Time The Tommy Vig Orhestra (This looks space/age but I
don't think it is, i don't know a thing about this guy)
Lightly Latin Poco Loco
Heartstings Dean Elliot
Sleepy Serenade by Claude Thornhill, I've always loved "Snowfall"
Christmas with Denny Davis & the Nashville Brass
Sign of the Times King Richards Fluegal Knights (Thanks to Otto's post
and Nat's reply)
King Richards Fluegal Knights on Broadway
Big Fat Brass the Surrey Brass
A Taste of Brass v/a with Hugo Montenegro, Pete Rugolo, Jerry Fielding,
Richard Hayman & Jim Tyler
I don't know much about the above and my 6th sense didn't ring on these.
They> were cheap but I don't expect much. Any advice on them is welcome .
I also got couple of Baja Marimbas & a couple of Coniffs.
I got a lot ofcds in the mail the last few weeks but like lp posts,
posting on cds hardly gets any discussion. If after playing them, any do
stand out, I will post on them. Cds are usually an exceptional find like
lps
which are rare and many times better than any of the cd releases
Anyway the list seems a lot different to me these days. I know there are a
lot of older exoticats I have been missing. The old digests reveal to me
focused discussion posts on particular lp finds and exciting new cd releases
(even back in 96).
This is the best list around by far! And there is something very wonderful
about the variety of topics dixcussed on this list from straight ahead
exotica to any type of music or any subject under the sun ie cargo cults!
Viva the Exotica List!!
Easy listening in the Big Easy

I happen to have a sealed copy of the Best of the Association record and
I'm wavering between breaking the cellophane or sending it to an
Association nut on the list. Nat would spank me for the very thought (and
probably enjoy it) but I really don't have a taste for croony tunes. Anyone
wanna tell me why I should keep this LP for myself?

Chuck or anyone else: is this worth seeking out? Great personnel. Please
post after you listen, Chuck. And I really like your comments on records.
Speaking of oldies but goodies, I'm toying with relaunching a Bring Jack

A recent find...
Dick Contino and his Accordion - Squeeze Me! (Mercury SR60090) (late 50s?
early 60s?)
Haven't heard about this one here, but I likes it fine. Dick Contino, with
Pete Rugolo running the orchestra. Dick doesn't cut loose and burn much on
this one... it seems like Pete counseled him to just lay back and let the
arrangements do the work. And there's lots of playful, sometimes eccentric,
arrangements.
Like "Whispering" done in a rock 'n' roll mode (tempo and groove like
"Blueberry Hill") with muttering voices mixed low all through it, and a
male hipster voice up front saying "Yeah, man..." over and over again
(Dick? Pete? The tape op?). A Revolution #9 for the space age set.
Or "Theme From Lombardo Ending" -- a "spoof on the perennially popular Guy
Lombardo staccato finale."
Although the results are quite different, it's a bit like they looked at
the 3 Suns and said, "Yeah, we can play that game. Yeah, man."
Any further information welcomed. Thanks.

I have honestly never heard anything so truly hideous yet weirdly
delightful.
I was so happy to read the long story about them in The New Yorker.

You have it in a very nice nutshell and I can't add much. Bing really
wanted to get away from the West Coast repeat he had to do for every show
and this was the ticket! Ampex headquartered itself in Redwood City, San
Mateo County, California and coincidentally Bing lived in the same county
for many years (I know because my sister went to ballet class with a
daughter of his). I know I have pictures of the first units and more
background...but all my books are boxed up waiting for shelves to be
assembled or purchased.

Hmmm... Draft Jack Diamond?
You miss having someone around to tell you that every record he just
happens to be selling is a bona fide TEN STARS must-have?
"This is the shit!"
"This is the real deal!!!!"
"You can't get this sound anywhere else!!!!"
Yeah I guess I miss it too. It was a bit like a broken record but at least
it was passionate. And he really does know about records and artists, even
when he ISN'T selling some new reissued CD of theirs.
(Is someone going to forward this to him? Uh, hi Jack.)

I don't either. I think it has something to do with CD's vs.LP's but
there's not much discussion of the CD's either, except to inform others
where they too can purchase it.
I still respond, post and discuss because, well, I clearly don't need that
much encouragement. But I do it less than I would if I didn't feel like I
was almost the only one doing it.
Okay enough of that for now. Doesn't someone want to complain about Lou's
obituaries?
(I cried for Curtis Mayfield, by the way. I have a piece about him in my
film and one of his tunes on the soundtrack. And I guess since my final
titles are not yet completed, I'll add him to the list of memorials at the
end.)
>Encounter With Time The Tommy Vig Orhestra (This looks space/age but I
>don't think it is, i don't know a thing about this guy)
I don't know this either but who could resist that name and that title?
I wonder if Tommy is Butch's father. I can't remember who Butch Vig is but
somehow I think if I searched my old SST records, I'd find him.
>Lightly Latin Poco Loco
That's not by Joe Loco is it? I love Joe Loco. Usually just piano, bass
and drums but his beat is so hard and insistent, it carries the thing.
I'd buy this, even if it's not Joe Loco.
>Heartstings Dean Elliot
Dean Elliot certainly has his moments but these days, I might hesitate
before buying something like this. Unless of course, the cover was rockin.
Maybe it's the title "Heartstrings". Could be one of those weepy things.
(I think I'm going to post on my deteriorating easy listening tastes.)
>Sleepy Serenade by Claude Thornhill, I've always loved "Snowfall"
I have one great Claude Thornhill record, with arrangements by the great
(Canadian, I think) Gil Evans.
Actually all the arrangements are by Gil, except the one for "Snowfall".
I don't buy much of this kind of classic jazz but it's nice to have a tiny
bit around.
>
>Christmas with Denny Davis & the Nashville Brass
I avoid his records but especially if they're Xmas. I just don't want to
open that box, so to speak. I went to a Xmas eve dinner this year and I
did wish that I had one of those Xmas compilation CD's that people on this
list made. All I have is a pretty good Buck Owens Xmas record and a
mediocre one by Jimmy McGriff.
And I do buy the occasional record LIKE Nashville Brass. There's that
Living Marimba/Living Voices Johnny Cash record and Billy Mure's Hank
Williams record.
>
>A Taste of Brass v/a with Hugo Montenegro, Pete Rugolo, Jerry Fielding,
>Richard Hayman & Jim Tyler
I'm assuming one of those Time - or is it Mainstream - things. Those are
all potentially great names but I wouldn't be surprised if the record was
tepid.
Can you tell I'm getting a bit tired of this stuff? I think I've just
raised the bar a bit.
More than a bit.

I love Dick Contino. And not just because James Ellroy used his name in a
novella. Not just because he was a notorious, mythic Los Angeles
"cocksmith". (Is that the right word? How about "ladies man"? The Warren
Beatty of the accordion?)
I have a feeling "squeeze me" was not just his big accordion pun.
I have this record but the cover is so messed up with radio station
stickers and such, that I didn't know Pete Rugolo was involved.
It's true that Dick doesn't cut loose much here but I love this record,
especially the version of "Yesterdays". I actually find that cutting loose
is not what I love most about Dick's other records anyway. Yeah his
"Flight of the Bumblebees" is breathtaking but his records are usually
pretty cool without the fancy fingering.
(No pun intended.)

Please let us know what you think about this one. I saw a compilation LP
with, I believe, one cut from that album on Capitol. The comp price was
more than I was willing to pay just to get access to that unknown
music...but I might be interested in going back to find that LP if you
found the album interesting. I am always wary of strings albums, though.

Subject: (exotica) Jerry Cole on Crown Records
Psychotronic Video (a highly recommended magazine for those into
trash culture, esp. movies) #31 has a lengthy article and interview
with guitarist Jerry Cole (by Fred Hopkins). Cole played with the Champs
("Tequila"), was part of Phil Spector's "Wrecking Crew," played on "Pet
Sounds," did studio work for Elvis, the Byrds, and many, many others.
He also played for Nelson Riddle and Henry Mancini.
I thought that some of you might find this excerpt particularly interesting,
where he talks about working for Crown Records:
...Jerry was also busy cutting nearly every kind of record imaginable for
the Bihari brothers' budget Crown label. He recorded approximately 75 (!)
albums for Crown, usually under different names, but sometimes as Jerry
Cole (or Kole). They contained some of the finest surf and hot rod music
ever cut. He also cut country western, easy listening and rock LPs...
...The Dave Clark Five and the Playbacks (64) Crown LP has only two
(pre-star) DC5 tracks. The rest was Cole and other session men.
"It was music by the pound. Crown would call me and they'd tell me they
wanted five surf albums, five country western albums, and five easy
listening albums. I'd write all the songs, arrange them, put together a
band and record them, and deliver the master tapes to fifteen albums to
Crown in about three weeks." (!) "I would write nine songs around one
cover hit, that would be one album. Then I might go in and do a blues
album. I'd have an individual call list of musicians. I would line up all my
musicians, we would start at nine in the morning and go probably to six
at night. I could crank out one to two albums a day. I would write
everything, with the exception of the covers. It was a great proving ground
for me as a songwriter..."

Subject: (exotica) good old exotica
Over the next couple of days, instead of stocking up on water and canned
goods, I'll be making a few exotica/lounge/easy listening tapes.
I have a pile of "recent" finds and I have to deal with them.
It's a bunch of percussion records, Command stuff, cha-cha/pachanga and the
various other usual suspects.
This is the kind of stuff that first got me into the kind of music we talk
about here - or that we used to - but my tolerance for the stuff has
plummeted.
My brain is still wired to recognize it and my hand still automatically
reaches for it but when I get it home and play it, I'm pretty ruthless
about keeping it.
I'm much much more tolerant of (what I call) Now Sound LP's. They don't
have to be all that interesting or original for me to consider keeping them.
I think it has something to do with the tunes. Now Sound LP's depend
heavily on Bacharach and the Beatles and if you have a few of those
records, you'll certainly have multiple versions of "I know a place", "Up,
up and away", "California Dreamin", "It's not unusual", "By the time I get
to Phoenix", "Aquarius", "Scarboro Fair", "Love is blue", "Traces",
"Mrs.Robinson" etc etc.
But as much as they depend on "standards", it's nothing compared to the
"standard dependence" in the lounge/exotica/easy listening genre.
Having said that, I'm definitely going to keep:
PHIL KRAUS - "The Percussive..."
It's a classic; it's got everything an exotic percussion should have and
even has a few tunes I don't think I've ever heard before. It's got a
sorta unique cover too.
And I'm thinking of maybe keeping:
ROBERT MAXWELL "Anytime"
The only Maxwell on Command that I've found. I love Maxwell and this has
such a cool sound and instrumentation. But I hate some of the old
chestnuts he covers here, even if one of them - "I'll Never Smile Again" -
was written by my old neighbour. What to do?
BOBBY CHRISTIAN "Mr.Percussion"
Once upon a time, I wouldn't have had to wonder about this one. The right
graphics, the right musician, a nice big closeup of hands hitting a bongo
drum.
But most of it is a bit... polite.
Then again, there's this goddess-like singing on his version of "Cherokee".
I actually got rid of a Terry Snyder record last week so maybe I can keep
this one.
BUDDY COLE "Ingenuity in Sound", one of those Stereo Workshop Series
I have three of these. This, Shorty Rogers and one by David Swift, a piano
player I wasn't going to keep the David Swift one but if there're only
three of them, maybe I'll keep them all.
For an organ record, this is above average.
Do I keep things just to complete a set or because they're above average?
I'll wait a couple of days before burdening you with more of my (in)decisions.

my problem is that i have searched and searched and searched for that
"supposed" Canadian or English 78 copy of Denny's Quiet Village just in case
that y2k thing happens. my batteries in my portable cd player will only go
so far, but i can always wind the Victrola!
we joke about this, but about 10 years, in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo,
which hit a 30 mile stretch around the Charleston, South Carolina coast, we
were without electricity for about 10 days. lemme tell ya. it is a lot
harder than you might think to go without electricity for 10 days, much less
just a few days.
that old Victrola helped me keep my sanity as not only did it give me
something to listen to, it gave me something to do! all that record changing
and winding kept me going.

I appreciated this, thanks. But it just makes you want to know more.
Which records did he do? I guess from now on, I'll just assume that all of
them are by him. But wouldn't it be neat if there was a place to go to get
the personnel details on all those strange, generic, sometimes wonderful
records like this?
On Crown, I have "Guitars a Go Go" by The Stingers. That's probably Jerry
Cole, eh?
But what about...
"More Psychedelic Guitars" on Custom?
"Mission Impossible and other action themes" by the Secret Agents on Design?
"Batman etc" by the Bat Boys, also on Design?
"Superman" by the Supermen on Spinorama?
"Goldfinger" by Zero Zero Seven, on Somerset
or the best of the bunch, methinks
"Batman and other Super Men" by the Revengers on Metro..
I read somewhere that Al Kooper and other members of Blues Project played
on a bunch of these. Someone should interview ole Al.

More recently, like in the last six months, Jerry Cole was guitar player
on "Songs of our Life" CD, by the Crew-Cuts. This is a revival of the
50's group doing shows all over America, some with a revival of the
Chordettes (one of the new Crew-Cuts owns the rights to both group
names).

What's your take on this LP. I have not been able to find a copy in good
condition at a reasonable price. Is it worth paying the big bucks for?
What's it sound like.

Subject: (exotica) OK here are some recent finds
With all this talk about talking about recent finds, I guess I should mention
a few of mine.
Moe Koffman - "Turned On" Jubilee Records JGS 8016
- Moe on his electric flute backed with some electric sax nail some
happenin' versions of "Mrs. Robinson", Up, Up and Away", "Soul Finger", "The
Mighty Quinn", other covers & some funky originals. It's a small combo maybe
2-3 horns, drums & other precessions, some electric piano, guitar maybe bass.
The tunes on the album that shoot for soul/funk are great, the mellower tunes
are decent but a little flat at points. The album cover has Moe in a white
Nehru jacket strapped into an electric chair. I give it 10.07 on my scale of
0.86 - 13.004
"Bob Crewe Presents Bhen Lanzaroni In Classic Form" - Dynovoice DY 31906
It's the Bob Crew Generation Orchestra with pianist Bhen Lanzaroni adding a
touch of classical flavor. Even though the piano stands out on this album
there's some energetic arrangement to add just enough punch to it to pull
the album out of the arm pit of true cheesy easy, easy cheesy listening.
There are maybe 3-4 songs that stand out with a funky flavor or a
Nashville/Now kinda groove. I like the album quite a bit, but only for 1/2
the songs on it. I'd give it a 6.0031 on my scale of 0.86 - 13.004
For any one who gives a damn. In a month or so I'll be digitizing and
restoring both of these albums and ready to trade them along with my usual
list of trade fodder.
May the New Year treat you all gently,
- -Roy

In order of preference start with
1. Mandrill Is
2. Composite Truth
3. Just Outside of Town.
Mandrill Is was just re-issued on vinyl by Polydor, but Composite Truth
will do quite nicely if you don't wish to dig further.

I was surprised how much I liked this record although I really shouldn't
have been.
I guess it had something to do with Moe's status as an icon in Canada and
especially here in his hometown.
(And getting even closer to home, he lived around the corner from us and my
brother played in bands with one of his sons. Not the son that went on to
play with local latin rockers Manteca, the other one.)
Even though Moe was a perfectly legitimate jazz musician and had one of
those rare jazz hit singles with "Swinging Shepherd Blues" in the late
fifties, he later became associated mostly with his "jazzy" interpretation
of classical music, especially the "Four Seasons" suite (by Vivaldi??).
And even though that might have been a hip idea at first, it got old really
fast and ruined Moe's reputation for me.
But this record redeemed Moe for me. It's not quite Herbie Mann's "Memphis
Underground" but it's a lot closer than I thought it would be.
Just shows to go you that you can't count any of them out. Every one of
them had at least one cool "jazz rock" Now Sound record in them, even if it
was only "accidentally" good.
Nat

This is a doggie's breakfast of an LP and kind of hard to "review".
(By the way, my copy is one of those "wrong LP's inside" deals. I thought
I was buying "The Green Hornet" on Coronet but the Supermen was inside.)
I don't think it's worth big bucks as far as the music goes.
The music is basically mediocre generic organ/guitar "surf", not unlike the
kind of Davie Allan-ish stuff you hear on biker soundtracks, but with a lot
less drive than most of it, and more dependence on organ than most of it.
I have a high tolerance for generic fake surf and there's actually a couple
of tunes here that have "something" to them, so I like it. But you can get
music like this in lots of places. (On the other hand, a lot of stuff like
this is expensive, no matter how generic it sounds.)
I'm pretty sure that there's nothing actually Superman-related about the
tunes here, except for the titles.
There's one vocal tune, "It's Superman", that sounds like it could have
come from a Superman cartoon or something. (And one vocal tune "You've Got
Possibilities", that sounds like it comes from a bad Broadway play.)
It may be some kind of collector's item and if you like this kind of stuff,
this is definitely this kind of stuff but ultimately it's pretty mediocre
musically.
