Two records I got at an estate sale today use "effects" to some degree to
make them interesting to listen to.
A 10 inch record from Capitol called "The New Sound!" is by Les Paul. He
has some cool interpretations of Brazil, Caravan and What is This Thing
Called Love.
I then went to my Capitol CD featuring the "best" of Les Paul and not one
of these (or any from this EP) were on the CD. Capitol, what gives?
Also got a 78 with the original cover...Gerald McBoing-Boing by Dr. Seuss
Told by The Great Gildersleeve (Hal Peary), 1950. As most children's
records are, it is rather noisy but playable. What a great fest of sound
effects with wonderful narration (and featuring Gildy's great laugh)! I
definitely want a better version of this.
After hearing the story, though, it makes me wonder...did Gerald ever find a
Mrs. McBoing-Boing and what he did he do for work after radio no longer
needed sound effects?

It's the musical equivalent of "Godzilla stomping on Bambi" on this
week's Retro Cocktail Hour. If you've read the "Incredibly Strange
Music" books, you know what we're talking about!
Also, you'll find primo exotica by Marty Wilson, Sid Bass and Robert
Drasnin; outer space pop from Frank Comstock, Russ Garcia and Ron
Goodwin's extremely rare "Music in Orbit"; a musical tribute to bug
spray from "Swingin' the Jingles"; plus tunes by Bob Thompson,
Esquivel, Rolley Polley, John(ny) Williams (long before "Star Wars"!)
and others.
To hear The Retro Cocktail Hour on the Web, just go to:
http://kanu.ukans.edu/retro.html
You'll need a minimum 28.8 Internet connection and RealPlayer. And,
for web surfers with really fast connections, you'll find great sound
in our G2 archive.
As always, your comments, suggestions and requests are welcome.
Next week -- crime jazz!

What's the best way to avoid being run over when crossing the streets

And, is there really such a thing as Pope-Soap-On-A-Rope? If so, where can
I get some?
Oh - I'd also appreciate any recommendations for restaurants, bars, and

cds from the 1960's avaliable for very low, low prices. I've even heard of
people bringing suitcases full of them back to sell on eBay. I hope you come
across some good ones. Have a nice trip.

heh... allow me to contradict you, Larry... if you can find those cheap cds
here where new albums including reprints cost at least $20, please tell me
where :))))))
well I must admit sometimes you might happen to find some surprises (I
recall finding the score to a 1980 tv serial by Stelvio Cipriani, the man
who composed "Anonimo Veneziano" and "Mark il Poliziotto"...) not as good
as his 1970s stuff but it was very cheap... and I sampled some bits for
record production ;))))))
oh, a friend of mine has tons of rare 7" and LPs for sale... he sent me two
excel files which I'll put zipped on my page. If any of you wanna take a
look - there are no prices yet but I can tell you on request (privately)...
You are warned: usually this guy's prices aren't so cheap but most of the
stuff is worth its price.
The files should be on http://www.olografix.org/djbatman/zip by the time
you read this!

They do appear in the "Les Paul: The Legend And The Legacy" cd box set
(Capitol, 1991, dunno if it's still in print). Along with such fun as
several episodes of "The Les Paul Show" radio program ("The Case Of The
Missing Les Paulverizer" is a pretty amusing episode, though "The Gas
Guitar" gets pretty bizarre too).

thanks for the comment ashley, one of the reviewers at a (german??) film
festival said that she had never seen so many people leave in the middle of a
movie. she tried to be nice but still, being honest in her opinion, could
not say anything nice about the movie.
of course, she was unaware of the denny music and did not comment on such.

I love the name "Pupi Prado," but I'd be downright shocked if it
turned out to be a real person.
It took me a while to get wise, but lately I've become very aware of
the shenanigans of those cheesy budget labels--which definitely
include recycling whatever tracks they can dredge up under bogus
artist and song titles. Wrecking your stylus is a new low, though! (I
seem to remember Jack Diamond muttering darkly about "melted down
ashtrays," so who knows if some nasty piece of grit is molded into
one of the grooves. . . )
Every once in a while you discover something brilliant and bizarre on
one of those budget labels. But after being burned a lot of times, I
finally made up a little chart for myself to keep straight the
blizzard of budget label names, which are really fronts for a small
number of companies. . . It's interesting detective work, matching
up different labels by comparing corporate address, recycled cover
art, etc.
I thought for a while you could see through this corporate shell game
by matching up *tracks* that appear on different albums (the famous
"yodeling Hawaiian" ones for example)--but I've came to the
conclusion that budget labels actually stole music from each other.
Which is about par for the course, I guess.
Anyway, I'd proceed with extreme caution with any of these labels:
SYNTHETIC PLASTICS/SPC/PREMIER (New Jersey, NYC)
Spinorama
Parade
Diplomat
Pirouette
Promenade
Premier
Coronet
Celebrity
Directional Sound (their would-be "audiophile" series)
Monogram ?
Palace ?
[These guys are definitely the cheesiest. It was quite a revelation
for me to realize that the Synthetic Plastics and the Premier brands
were all connected somehow.]
PICKWICK (NYC, Long Island City)
Pickwick
Design
Stereo Spectrum
Grand Prix
Bravo ? (K. M. Corp., Long Island)
MILLER/BUDGET SOUND/ALSHIRE (Media PA, Runnemede NJ, CA)
Somerset/Stereo Fidelity
Alshire
Miller International/D.L. Miller
Europa (apparently one of many foreign satellites)
PRECISION RADIATION INSTRUMENTS/RADIO CRAFTSMEN (LA, NYC, Chicago)
Tops
Golden Tone
Acorn
Kimberly (their would-be "audiophile" series)
One I'm still a little unclear about is CROWN. There was definitely a
California label operating just as "Crown"--at the slightly higher
end of the budget spectrum it seems. I suspect (from some recycled
cover art) that "Modern" was their label too. But there was also a
Crown in Philadelphia, who put out the "Hanover" budget label--and
who seem to be connected with Strand (Billy Mure records),
Cameo/Parkway (Chubby Checker) and Cameo/Parkway's budget "Wyncote"
label. Not clear if it's the same Crown.
This still leaves a few budget labels un-affiliated, so far as I've
been able to tell:
Kent
Forum/Connoisseur ("Division of Jaymo Products")
Blue Ribbon/Hollywood
Silver Seal
Anyway, if anybody has some corrections or additions (or knows of a
source who has figured all this out already), I'd like to hear about
it. Maybe I can add a version of this to the next FAQ revision. . .

Hey! Pupi turns out be yet another clue in the budget jigsaw puzzle. . .
I've got the same title, same catalog number--but on the "Silver
Seal" label instead.
Kind of confirming my hunch, the disk label credits the music to
"Jose Cubano and Orchestra." (Who is probably equally fictional.)
But I guess this makes Silver Seal another one of the PREMIER
pseudo-labels! And now I suspect Hollywood/Blue Ribbon is another one
(I spotted one cover photo used on both labels).
yours deductively,

Good morning, and welcome to Happy Housewife Tips with
Jane Fondle!
Jane has what some might call a twisted paper towel
fetish! But what is a gal in a
space-age-bacheloretteesque-pad to do to brighten up
her kitchen, with all these yucky moderne "country
crafts" paper towels on the shelves?
ANSWER! Bounty makes a "ready for the jungle
exotica/tiki room" towel print, with bamboo and little
panda bears on it! Not exactly Easter Island heads,
but we're getting closer!
In search of yellow pills,

I came back from a recent trip to Japan with an extra copy of this on
vinyl. Basically I stumbled across it in a record shop in Osaka, was under
the impression from the owners that it only existed on vinyl, but later
found it on CD so bought that too. I'm selling the vinyl although it looks
much nicer because the CD will be easier to copy for friends.
I didn't know about this film at all. It's a 1966 film by a Polish director
called Jerzy Skolimowski. It's very very good, some hotter jazz, some
cooler with one track sung by a Christiane Legrand. The packaging is also
very nice. It has a liner notes insert with all the text in Japanese and
stills from the film. I haven't seen it over here yet. It was released in
Japan in July this year, I think.
And ... it's unplayed.
I'm offering it to you guys first. The deal is that you pay =A316.00 which i=
s
what I paid for it plus postage and recorded delivery. I think in the UK
that will be about =A320.00 altogether. Obviously it'll make most sense
economically for someone over here in the UK.
Anything else you want to know - ask.

As a certified (more or less) housewife (sort of) myself
it isn't hard to relate to Jane's woes, I'm afraid the
paper towel situation in The Netherlands is equally bad.
What? Worse! There isn't a bamboo & panda print in sight
and the best I can get away with is totally white, thank
god at least there is such a thing as totally white, for
the rest it's yuckyness all over.
Double portion of yellow pills, please.

Oh, EVERY former Ronald McDonald knows about Moondog! No surprise
there. My father used to see him in full Viking regalia on his way to
work. Dad worked on Varrick St., a wonderful old building, complete with
gargoyles. Also, Johnny Carson said on the Tonight Show some years ago
that he used to see Moondog as well. Carson also had mistakenly said that
he had died. Stop playing "Witch of Endor" backwards, Johnny!
I am going to miss Hardin. He was a genius and a wonderful discovery for
my brother and myself. My brother and I looked for this album furiously
for years after having borrowed it from the local library.

You are thinking of the early "Brown Wax" recordings. These
recordings were made by encircling the performer with dozens
of recording machines and starting them all at once. A performer
would do the song, then all the wax cylanders would be changed
for blanks and they would go through the process again. For a
popular tune, the orchestra might perform the same song over
and over all day... Must have driven them crazy after awhile.
This was early on in the history of cylander recording. Every
Edison cylander player was easily converted to a recording
machine by a simple switch of a stylus head. In fact, Edison
never envisioned the phonograph as a way of recording popular
music. It was supposed to be a dictation machine for businesses,
but the ancillary use eclipsed the intended use.
My brother has a brown wax of John Phillip Sousa playing Stars
and Stripes Forever... a bit of history there. It's neat to
know that the cylander was in the room with Sousa himself. The
brown wax period didn't last very long. They figured out how to
mass produce cylanders pretty fast... It was a relatively
successful format. The continued existence of players and
cylanders at just about every antique store that carries phono-
graphs bear this out. In general, if the cylander is brown, it
is wax... Black ones are shellac like any other mass produced
record.

Subject: (exotica) The Cats Go Wild
I just got an ebay purchase called "The Cats Go Wild" one of the Ultra Audio
records put out by United Artists (Wall to Wall Stereo).
I thought it might be so! It is filled with just drumming. Great drumming
to be sure, but a true "percussion" festival not really. It is a drum
festival. I don't know if this record was released like the others in the
series, in gatefold fashion. My album wasn't gatefold, so if there was any
information about the
drummers or the "music" I didn't get it because they simply put the outer
covers
of the gatefold together. Anyone have a gatefold version of this?
The thing I most appreciate about this album is the back cover which has
pictures of Don Lamond and Teddy Sommers, two well known percussionists who
did real percussion albums on other labels. Until this I had never seen
what they looked like. Charlie Persip and Mel Lewis, two trad. jazz
drummers are also part of the troup. Sol Gubin I had never heard of, but
he is also one of the featured drummers.
