The bird call records of Ralph Platt came up here recently and Citizen Kafka
posed the musical question "What makes these records strange?" , to which I
have an answer. I have a couple of these records..."The Birds Sing His
Praise" and "The Birds Sing His Praise Volume 2", and they are actually
accredited to Ralph Platt and Lorin Whitney. Ralph did these amazing bird
imitations and Lorin provided a background of christian organ music! It's
all tunes like "I Have Been Alone With Jesus" and "The Glory of His
Prescence". Guaranteed to make your skin crawl. I rarely play these
records, but they never fail to cast a profoundly disturbing mood over even
the most happy-go-lucky crowd.

All of the following are available on CD in the US:
Moondog (1956) (Prestige)
More Moondog/The Story of Moondog (Prestige)
Moondog (1969)/Moondog 2 (CBS)
Sax Pax for A. Sax (Atlantic)
There are a few more titles that were released in Germany only. Moondog
recorded these in the 60s and 70s.
I would recommend More Moondog/The Story of Moondog, two of his best recorded
in Moondog's heyday 1956-1957. There are 30 tracks of vintage Moondog
crammed onto this CD.
If you can't find this or stumble across something else by Moondog, all of
his material is different and is worthy of being sought out.

Subject: (exotica) Byron Caloz and misinformation
Hello, Byron and exotica list,
This part of a thread about the definition of records has finally pushed
my button, so here goes:
1) Byron leads off with a definitive statement...
"Cylinders were never mass-produced so did not have a big following (I
don't think anyone ever found a way to mass produce a single recording
on cylinder)."
2) I'm not certain, and contact Allen Koenigsberg, a noted authority
(see his website for details on the world of cylinders and early
phonographs):
http://members.aol.com/allenamet/PhonoBooks.html
Allen responds:
"Yes, they sometimes called cylinders 'records.' Cylinders were mass
produced, first by Thomas Lambert in 1900-1905 and then by Edison,
1902-1929, and Columbia, 1902-1909, and many other companies. They were
sold in the millions!"
3) I send Byron this response, with my comment that:
"[Byron's] message, below, is substantially and factually wrong."
4) Byron hunkers down in a defensive crouch and retorts:
"Which is why we discuss these things here to get the word...although I
don't think I was substantially wrong. Everything I have read said that
you could not mass produce one identical recording. Perhaps this was
before the turn of the century and someone figured out a way to make a
master cylinder from which you could stamp thousands or even millions of
copies...but I'd have to read from "the experts" to learn more. Perhaps
millions of cylinders were sold, but also millions of different
performances. I was speaking of a mass production of a single
recording. I think Mr. Koenigsberg is just a little bit touchy about his
favorite medium. Just empirically comparing the process used to create
flat discs, I would not think that mass production of a single
performance would be possible. One performance would be recorded
acoustically on dozens of machines, each making a near identical record
of the performance. If the company wanted to make more cylinders, the
performance would have to repeated.
This is unlike the true mass production process where you could record
a single disc, create a stamping disc from that and then stamp as many
copies as necessary. While many people bought cylinders, I don't think
the process allowed for a large number to hear the exact same
performance. I still think this prevented the true mass media
experience records later began to enjoy."

5) Allen replies:
"the truth is the truth. In 1900, cylinders were able for the first
time to be coated with plumbago (powdered graphite), and then coated
with copper, electrolytically. When the wax master was melted out, the
metal shell was a perfect copy of the original performance, and hundreds
or thousands of cylinders could then be replicated from the mold (by
pouring molten wax). Each of these commercial cylinders sold to the
public would be identical.
In 1902, Edison began to coat the master wax cylinder with a thin
coating of gold. This allowed for more accurate moulding of the sound,
and copper was only added to the outer shell for strength. Once the
mould existed, they could be used over and over again to make identical
recordings. I believe the term is "mass-production."
What does "touchy" have to do with it - either the process can be
explained scientifically and accurately or it can't. No doubt your
correspondent is referring to the situation in the 1890s when production
of cylinders was limited, and pantographing was used to make copies. In
those days, there were indeed multiple performances (not millions!). But
pantographed copies would also be identical, until the master wore out
from the process.
If mass production did not exist, there is no way that Edison, Columbia
and Pathe could have issued so many millions of cylinders, year in and
year out. The term is not called "stamping, but "moulding". The process
could be used for wax as well as celluloid.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Anything other than the above
is "substantially wrong."
allen koenigsberg
6) I remind Byron and all of us that this chain reaction started with a
patently incorrect statement, stated firmly as fact, as part of a
discussion on this list. If i had not responded privately to Byron this
would have passed unchallenged and perhaps many folks on this list, who
take our correspondence as informed, would perpetuate this historical
inaccuracy. There is way too much bull on the internet; we need to be a
bit careful. Not that Byron was pitching bull, exactly, but more like
kicking it around. Hypothesizing without any factual information is
storytelling, which is entertaining but not edifying. Information of
this sort is readily available from solid sources, both on the internet
and in research libraries and from collectors and archivists.
7) I close by saying that this is a pet peeve of mine, and I'm surprised
that Byron, who seems to do a lot of substantial research (see his site
http://www.hubris.net/zolac/smooth
for details) would have laid this out. Ah, well...
8) Rant over.

Keep an eye out for the album he did with Julie Andrews and Martyn Green,
"Tell It Again" (Angel), which is kiddie nursery rhymes and songs. Julie and
Martyn narrate and sing, Moondog supplies the background. Incredibly strange!

The length of the music affects how much you get charged for manufacturing
and cutting (on vinyl at least). When manufacturing the Planet Cook mini
LP, it clocked in at over 17 minutes so 45 rpm or no, it was a 12", it was
an LP. I don't know how the time was arrived at. This was before the blue
room, and I think the Orb were just pushing their luck.
As for country 'Albums' being scant, I recall from a magazine article that
this is due to royalties, if you record more than a certain number of songs
the royalties for the extra songs come out of the artists cut. Not so
important if you're getting writing credits, but Country is probably the
last area where there is a thriving songwriter industry, separate from the
recording artists.
back to the LP/Single etc I suppose one of us could contact a pressing plant
and ask. I don't have any numbers with me now....

Anyone know anything about this one? (thanks)
Pupi Prado And His Orchestra
"Cha Cha Cha For Swingin' Partners"
Celebrity Records, UT-127
I have no idea if this person bears any actual relationship to Perez Prado.
Possibly, there isn't even an actual Pupi Prado -- just a marketing
department fabrication maybe? Musically it's standard budget label
cha-cha/Latin stuff. Nice enough. In classic budget label mode, the track
listings on the cover and label don't agree.
While playing this record, my stylus disintegrated. I mean, it really
went... there's nothing but a stump left! I don't know if the record did
it, or if the needle's number was simply up, but it sure died big-time. The
record's condition really didn't (and doesn't) look all that bad to me. No
major scratches -- just the usual flea market wear. Still, I will be wary
of trying it again.

There was also a release by the Musical Heritage Society:
Hardin (Moondog) Selected Works (MHC 5803)
Performers: Gavin Black (harpsichord),Fritz Storfinger (organ),Guy
Carmichael (horn),Louis T. Hardin (Percussion), Pannonia String Quartet.
Side one has 8 cuts, 4 of which are canons. Side two has 6 selections from
Logrundr Book 1 for Organ.
Don't know why, but this item isn't listed in the MHS's on-line data base at
their site. It would be a real shame if it is a withdrawn or discontinued title.

Subject: (exotica) Tiki Bob Survives ! ! !
Greetings Exoticans!
Well, Floyd roared past Charleston about 60 miles from the coast. We had
some hurricane (altho very mild) force winds. Being on the western side of a
hurricane is much better than being on the east or north side. There are a
good many trees down around our area but no major damage like after Hurricane
Hugo in 1989 (ten years ago Sept 21 -- that was a helluva blast!).
My exotica albums rode out the storm quite nicely in a high closet at my
mother's house. We had a generator so we had TV, radio and STEREO ! ! !
Everything seems to be approaching normal again. I have re-hung my framed
Exotica album covers, unpacked the vinyl and am currently listening to a
little Les Baxter. Oh, and on that note, I played a few versions of "Moon
Over Manakoora" (sp??) during the hurricane (but I did not strap myself to a
tree).
I want to thank all of those List members who so kindly sent me emails of
encouragement. Now, if I can just catch up on 3 days backlog of Exotica List
postings.
Outta the "bad eye" of the storm, and back in my little grass hut, (and heard
in the background: "shooka-shooka-shooka" [the sound of a Mai Tai WITH
ice!]),
Tiki Bob

wow otto... wish we were there! sounds like a fun event to kick off the
release of this truly "eagerly awaited" legends stunning + sensual work.
how do we get one... net booksellers, any tips? btw... Martin Denny
turned 88 this year, not 92. also, listers should seek out a NZ movie
called "Velvet Dreams" (i think) that i saw at the Hawaii International
Film Festival last year... great images and story of another south seas
velvet artist whose name eludes me (help!). glad to hear Tiki Bob rode
out the storm with records in tact and mai tai in hand, valiantly
holding his tiki torch up the eye of Floyd!
Last, proud to announce the second Taboo Records release, "Duke
Kahanamoku Presents A Beachboy Party"... a legendary 1963 album
available for first time on CD with 2 bonus tracks recorded on the beach
in Waikiki at the Outrigger Canoe Club. These guys taught tourists and
Hollywood hoi poloi (Bing Crosby, et al.) how to surf by day, and how to
live, party and sing by night. you can almost hear the bottles of Primo
beer clinking in the background as Duke, Harry Robello, Turkey Love, Ox,
Splash Lyons, Chick Daniels, Kalakaua
Steamboat, Panama, Waltah, Fat Kala, Squeeze, and more take turns at the
mic. Kalakaua's version of WAIKIKI is totally "chicken skin."
Fat Kala's ukulele solo on "Lover," is real beachboy essence.

Anyone ever heard of (or heard) this Elvis Sinatra (aka George Leonard) feller? Web site at: < http://www.elvissinatra.com >
He has a new CD (East Village Vegas!) out now -- worth investigating??

I was reading an article about all of the upcoming fall movies and there was
a bit about Alan Rudolph's film of Kurt Vonnegut's 'Breakfast of Champions'.
Apparently, the entire score (or a good portion of it) is made up of Martin
Denny tracks. Woo-Hoo! Should be fun, though I can't imagine how a film
was made of that book... >>
yes, this has been discussed a little. mr. denny went to Seattle about 1.5
months ago for a "wrap" party. he indicated to me that he was very excited
about this movie coming out (and nicely compensated too for his work). i
think there are about 16 of his original songs in the movie.
unfortunately, i have not been able to find an opening date for this movie.
and, sorrily, the reviews i have seen from some film festivals are not too
good. actually they are horrible. hopefully they will not "yank" this movie
before it is released.
and, if ever there is a hard novelist to take to the silver screen, it is
vonnegut.

tiki bob

I saw him live once in NYC -- his gimmick is pretty interesting. He stands
with a microphone and sings in front of a big screen TV which is playing a
video tape of his pre-recorded music and backup singers. (I guess this way
he doesn't have to pay them for each show?)
He does covers as well as original tunes -- not bad. I remember a nice
cover of 'What's New Pussycat'.

On some of the 'movie preview' web sites you can download the trailer,
which contains quite a bit of MD's music in it. Sorry, I don't have an
address handy.
It's hard to say from the preview whether it will be good or bad. I'd like
to give Alan Rudolph the benefit of the doubt. I'm a huge fan of most of
his other work. (The Moderns, Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle, Trouble
in Mind, etc.)

Hey listers...I have been in email correspondence with Ferrante & Teicher's
manager, and the amazing news is that the duo are rehearsing for a PREPARED
PIANO, tape-loop-type piano recording!! According to the manager "No
easy-listening here--they're gonna come out slugging!" No program as of
yet. First time recording together in over 10 years. That just made my
year.
While on the F&T tip, does anyone out there have a crisp copy of SOUNDBLAST
(not soundproof!) they would be willing to trade exotic goodies for? I'll
really make it sweet for ya; I'm moving abroad in a month (Sydney, here I
come!), and lots of my treasures will part ways with me. Email me privately
on that if you'd prefer!
Thought you'd all like to hear the news about F&T. I think their prepared
piano recordings from the 50's/60's are absolutely the most exciting,
spectacular and WILD recordings from that time period. Period! Should be a
(sound)blast to see what they come up with as two elder statesmen!
Fondly,
Keith

Subject: (exotica) Frank Comstock / Paul Tanner reissue LPs
To all those of you who have ordered copies of these LPs from me
and are wondering what on earth has happened to them...
Despite several assurances from my wholesale supplier I have yet
to receive a single copy of either of these LPs. I have now sent
them an ultimatum that unless I have received copies by
Wednesday of the coming week I will be cancelling the order (and
in fact my account with this supplier!).
Should these LPs fail to arrive I will of course promptly refund all
money which has been sent to me and ask you to purchase your
copies elsewhere (eg: Dusty Groove http://www.dustygroove.com/).
Please accept my apologies for this fiasco.
I'll let you all know the outcome of my ultimatum as soon as I have
one.
Robbie

From the Yorkshire Post:
There could be moist eyes as well as fervent
applause at Huddersfield Town Hall on Sunday
night when the Ted Heath band makes a farewell
appearance.
"It's a special concert to celebrate the band's
55th anniversary and final tour" says Bernard
Hinchcliffe, Huddersfield agent and indefatigable
Heath fan.
Don Lusher, the trombonist who was with Heath for
more than 10 years, leads the band which will
include such stalwarts as Jack Parnell (Muppet
Show), Tommy Whittle and singer Dennis Lotis.
Ted's widow, Moira, is planning to be there.

The above is sad news in a sad week, which saw
the passing away of much loved UK singer
Frankie Vaughan.
