Synchronicity kicks in, Sweet Jane. Just got the Black Orpheus OST (Fontana
SRF 67520), and it's a beauty, babe. Liner notes claim the score of this
1959 film helped introduce the world outside of Brazil to samba --
exaggeration or true? Score by Jobim and Luis Bonfa. The most exciting
record of the 20 or so I picked up in July/August.

I am reminded of something funny, and I would like to hear of other
examples..when Julie sings "Give Me the Simple Life"(same with Annie Ross!)
and Frank Sinatra sings "I Got Plenty of Nothin'", it sounds just so, uh,
WRONG, when you know of their personalities and proclivities...Sinatra
swimming in money and gals, Julie I can see sitting around in a penthouse
in a feathered robe and mules...and Annie Ross is just too swank, except
for when she asks for that "house that swings with joy and laughter, and
*Marlon Brando* inside"

an absolutely smokin' tenor sax/organ instrumental, "While The City

Great song from a great opera.  The best song from Porgy & Bess is "Bess You
Is My Woman Now" an absolutely beautiful duet between Porgy and Bess.  In the
right mood (and with just the right light) this song will literally bring me

And Gershwin wrote the music for this opera about 4 miles from where I sit in
my office now on James Island.  He wrote the music on Folly Island.  The play
Porgy (by Dubose Heyward) on which the opera is based is set in Charleston in

PORTISHEAD are one of the first bands to fall victim to a new twist in
record piracy; bands of soundalikes being passed off as the real thing.

An album purporting to be by Portishead called 'Pearl' was picked up in
Russia by a journalist working there who contacted nme.com. It was an 11
track album with professional artwork and seemingly new tracks; it sounded
a bit like Portishead, though there were some doubts as to whether or not
it actually was.

The album was on a known bootleg label called Always Records - common in
Russia, Ukraine and Eastern European countries - but also carried the Go!
Beat - Portishead's label - logo and a copyright statement.

There was some speculation - particularly on Portishead fan sites - that
the album may have been a Beth Gibbons solo album that had somehow been
leaked to or stolen by bootleggers.

Richard Chamberlain of Go! Beat in the UK confirmed that it was definitely
not Portishead.

"It's not Beth singing," he told nme.com. "I don't know what it is.
Definitely nothing to do with us."

Further investigation by the journalist who first uncovered the story
revealed that it was actually an existing album by a band called Mandalay.

One bootleg collector that nme.com spoke to claims that this is a new
twist.

"In the 60s, you would sometimes get regional record labels in America
putting out tracks by local artists that were supposedly by better known
acts," he said. "It was often soul artists. You would get somebody in
Seattle putting out records by Wilson H Pickett or something that sounded
nothing like Wilson Pickett. You would also get touring bands in Britain
passing themselves off as American bands who had had hit records. In those
days people didn't always know what they looked like so it was easy to do."

In the late 70s, one relatively famous scam involved an Australian garage
band turning out a compilation album of supposedly obscure 60s psychedelic
punk tracks by different bands.

There are other Portishead bootlegs circulating in Russia including one
features Portishead tracks interspersed with tracks from Propellerheads'
'Decksanddrumsandrockandroll'.

Russia, Ukraine and other former Soviet countries have become havens for CD
bootlegging and data piracy because international organisations find it
difficult to police operations there. But this is the first case anyone has
come across of an existing band being used to sell imitation product.

 This is an interesting twist, though reminiscent of a situation involving
"The Black Album" by Prince (or the artist formerly known as).  When Prince
originally decided not to release the Black Album, bootleg copies were in
great abundance.  It seems that not all of the bootlegs were actually
bootlegs though.  I seem to recall that a german band had done a
note-for-note recreation and started selling these as the actual Prince
recording.

which was fabuloso! yes, us Hawaiians have to go somewhere tropical +
affordable for playtime. saw mayan ruins, spanish colonial cities, Diego
Rivera's murals, Frida Kahlo's house, blue footed booby birds, so much
more. bought a round metal beer tray with aztec/tiki art on it! a huge
record store in Mexico City played the Don over their sound system to
smiling faces and hooked me up to Corazon for distribution there. they
handle the "Buena Vista Social Club" releases. btw, saw the movie of
same by wim wenders there which i think is an instant classic... should
do for Cuban music what "Black Orpheus" did for Brazilian. btw, our
amazing percussionist who becomes the new "Orfeo" at the end of the film
is Carlinhos de Oliveira. we're a real band that does play, er,
occasional gigs here. Kevin, I'll get back to you when i get caught up
with work about any gigs and other exotic stuff going on during your

Well, it certainly sounds like a parody of something Martin Denny has done.
 I have been curious about it as well.  It is VERY humorous, especially

The Ray Conniff singers do a bangup job of the "Thus Spake Zara whatever"
theme to 2001.  They call it something like "Ba da da da".
Generally the RC singers started sucking the moment they went from wordless
vocals to singing the words.  Maybe this works because there aren't lyrics.

SHELBURNE, Vt. (AP) -- Whitney Darrow Jr., a popular cartoonist
for The New Yorker, died Tuesday. He was 89.
                  The New Yorker published more than 1,500 of
Darrow's cartoons during a 50-year career that started in the
1930s.
                  One of his favorite cartoons was inspired by
the advent of Laundromats. Darrow drew a woman in a busy Laundromat
washing all her clothes, including those she'd been wearing.
Naked, she stares in amazement at the newfangled machine doing
her wash.
                  John Russell, reviewing a Darrow exhibition
in 1978, wrote in the New York Times that ``Whitney Darrow has
been one of the best cartoonists around for as long as anyone
can remember. He is an environmental cartoonist, in that he goes
on setting the scene in that misleadingly easygoing style of
his until he is ready for a one-liner. And what a one-liner.''

                  He published four collections of his cartoons
and also illustrated books by Jean Kerr, Nathanial Benchley and
many others.
                  In addition to his wife, Middy, Darrow is survived
by a son, a daughter, and two grandsons.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Vocalist Tommy Ridgley, a veteran performer
from the golden age of New Orleans rhythm and blues, died Wednesday
of lung cancer. He was 73.
                  Though Ridgley never had a national hit, his
more than 70 recordings have endured around the globe. He was
a fixture in the city's nightclubs and at private functions for
50 years, and has been featured at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage
Festival since 1972.
                  Ridgley signed with Decca Records in 1952 and
produced ``TraLaLa'' which was later covered by Pat Boone.
                  He also recorded over the years for Atlantic
Records, where he was billed as ``The New King of the Stroll.''

                  In 1995, Ridgley released an acclaimed comeback
album, ``Since the Blues Began,'' on Black Top Records. Last
year Ridgley announced plans for a new CD, and remained optimistic
about performing even after he was diagnosed with lung cancer.

Well I can't speak for the other "bachelor" groovy guys but there could be
lots of "reasons" we're alone.
Am I alone because I've spent every spare minute in the last few weeks
making crooner tapes - for MYSELF - in order to "digest" all these crooner
records I've been buying OR am I making those tapes because I'm alone and
it's better to obsess about what other records fit on the tape with "Jack
Jones sings Michel Legrand" than to obsess over why there are no women around?

I have a one-sided picture-disc single from the late sixties by a Dutch painter
who called himself Ardy, the Painter of Love. His real name is Ardy Struwer.
Apparantly he lives in Sweden now.
The single I have is called 'Pregnant rainbows for colourblind dreamers', and
yes it's quite weird. It starts quietly with the sound of rain, but gradualy it
builds up to a jamsession with lots of percussion and Ardy reciting a poem
about "your red nipples" and other interesting things.
I've been told that only 99 copies of this record were made, so I'm quite that
I found it at.
