Does anyone know if the soundtrack to "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken" is
availble anywhere. Was it released? What about the theme song?

There has been scant to no praise for Percy Faith on this list in the 3+
years I've been (mostly lurking) here. It's time someone set the record
straight. He's got some great stuff. Lots of great stuff.
I must say that I play my copies of Bim! Bam! Boom! and Brazil an awful
lot... he has a richness to his compositions that other orchestrators could
not pull of without sounding like 101 strings.

Ah, Alison Statton... Yes I was a Weekend fan too.

There's an album "La Variete".
The band lost Alison Statton and evolved into Working Week who I
remember released at least one album which I never heard. Working Week
did release one great single I remember, with Tracey THorn doing the
vocal honours, "Venceremos".
If you're into the YMG/Weekend/bossa sound, you'd probably like the
album by Spanish singer Ana D "Satelite 99" which came out on Elefant
Records (http://www.elefant.es/) a couple of years ago.

Subject: (exotica) Honolulu travel recomendations
Hello all,
I will be in Honolulu from October 23-30th and would like
recommendations of exotica-ish things to check out. Also, if anyone
would like to me for a Mai Tai or something, I'd love to get a "native"
perspective on the islands.
Things already on my itinerary.
* Arthur Lyman at the New Otani (please, tiki god, don't let me miss
this...)
* going to check out the aluminum dome (or whatever they're calling it
these days) and the Hawaiian Village
* Bishop Museum, shopping at the Intl Marketplace, Ala Manoa, etc.
* Don Ho's new restaurant
* Mai Tais at the Halekulani, Royal Hawaiian, Sheraton, Jameson's by
the Sea, New Otani, etc.
Anyone know if the old Don the Beachcomber or Trader Vic's buildings are
still standing or not (and where they are/were?)???? Are the used
record places worth checking or have all the "treasures" been mined
already?
Any further suggestions would be much appreciated. Mahalo.

I will attempt to answer quickly, or I will go on all-day -
Aviation (gin, lime maraschino cherry)
Bees Knees (gin, lime, honey)
Bennet (gin, lime, bitters)
I suggest you try to get some Cointreau, as it will GREATLY expand the
number of drinks you can make, like the satisfying (and stealthy) Delilah
(Gin, cointreau, lemon) or the Orange Bloom (Gin, cointreau, orange)
For Bourbon drinks, try a Bourbon Squash.
The place to go for the REAL pre-prohibition cocktail recipes and advice is
http://hotwired.com/cocktail .
I loooves this site. Paul Harrington, AKA the Alchemist also has brilliant
book on the subject.
Enjoy. Don't spare the ice.
I am about to buy Gin, Bourbon and Angostura Bitter, Lime and Ginger Ale. I
just thought if someone know any more vintage drinks with these or with
other easily obtainable ingredients? I cant find any syrups here, except for
those i can make at home. I can buy more kind of fruits and sodas, but thats
about all.
Any ideas?
And,
I am about to compile a book of my trance and cartoonish psych sketches I
have made over the year 1999, 80 pages maybe. if anyone is interested in a
copy, please let me know, i wont make more than i can sell/give away. The
price will be about $8 and will feature a color cover with a painting of one
of my Aku Akus. Its xerox, thats all i can afford just now. But xeroxcopies
now is quite good in quality.

What a fantastic story! I could totally picture
the house. And it was much creepier and more
suspenseful than that Blair Witch Project movie.
When I lived in Lincoln, Nebraska, I found a record
store that had a huge stash in the basement --
you had to go down these creaky, narrow stairs
to get to it, and the place was musty and
poorly lit. The owners offered me the "job"
of going through all the records and pricing them,
but I was about to move to Chicago. They did
give me some incredible deals on what I unearthed
there -- like three sealed Dusty Springfield albums
on Phillips ($5-6 ea!). But I still have dreams
sometimes that I'm going through those records....
House / yard sales are so bizarre, in my experience.
You get to see some pretty bizarre assemblages of
furniture and knick-knacks. Then there's always
some room you're not supposed to go into, and you
peek in anyway.

I have the 45 "Drumbeat For Baby/Sleepy Theory" on Rough Trade. They seem
to have
put out one other single "Past Meets Present/Midnight Slows" and 2 LPs
"La
Variete" and "Live At Ronnie Scott's" all on Rough Trade. Stratton went
on to
work with Ian Devine from "Ludus" as Devine & Stratton as which they
released 2
LPs "The Prince Of Wales" and "Cardiffians" on the Belgian Crepuscule
label.
Haven't heard these but the descriptions make them sound similar to
Weekend.

Actually this should be Maraschino liqueur, a dry cherry liqueur which
is almost impossible to find, I have been trying for years in the
States. It has no relation to the abominable Maraschino cherries. It
might be easier in Europe.
> Bennet (gin, lime, bitters)
Don't forget the sugar or this is just a Gimlet (am I the only person
left in the world who drinks their Gimlets with bitters, I get the
oddest looks from bartenders when I order one).
I do like the Hotwired Cocktail site but Paul Harrington's book left me
a bit disappointed, it was very pretty but no better than any of the
dozen others I have. My standard references are Playboy's Host and Bar
Guide, Trader Vic's Guide to Food and Drink and Beachbum Berry's Grog
Log. If it ain't in those three you probably don't need to be drinking
it anyway.

Sarah's got better pipes than the DT vocalist, but Don Tiki's arrangement=

I don't know from Don Tiki nor whether the song is a standard but I have
two great versions of it. An instrumental version by Tony Hatch which made
me think it was some lost Quincy Jones soundtrack cut. Or Bacharach. It
has a very similar feel to Bacharach's "Bond Street". The Hatch record says
the song is from the film "Girl Rush". Never heard of it but I'd like to.
I also have a bang-up vocal version by the great Ethel Ennis. In fact I
just finished a tape with that song as the lead-off track.
Okay Jane, make with the Ethel Ennis endorsements.

typecast in dumb blonde roles, but she was a fine, much underrated
singer (she only did a couple of albums, including one with her then-
boyfriend, Gerry Mulligan). I really love this tune and her version
is my favorite. It's on her album "Trouble Is A Man" (Columbia 1153)
and it also turned up on the "Sex Kittens in Hi-Fi" CD from DCC.

I have a great version by Judy Holliday. It's on a CD titled Trouble Is A
Man. Excellent stuff.

Yeah that's what it means. Maybe if I saw it somewhere, I might buy it
after hearing it mentioned so much here. But I've never seen it and I
don't have a credit card because no one will give me one which is a good
thing because I would just blow my credit all over again ordering things
online.
Like that Don Tiki CD for instance.
And then there's the fact that while I have bought a few "modern" exotica
CD's, I seldom keep them. Unless you count Tipsy, which I love, but it's
not the same thing really.
I just recently dumped the Four Piece Suit CD in spite of the great Neil
Young cover. I don't know why I keep reacting this way. I tell myself
it's a silly prejudice, then I buy another one, then I have the same
reaction.
I think it's visceral and not something I've decided to feel.
Maybe it's the CD sound. Maybe it's the CD itself as an object. Maybe
it's the absence of innocence. Maybe it's the "decontextualization". Or
maybe the difference between the "original" stuff and the new stuff is
nothing you can put your finger on.
But that's not to say I won't absolutely love the Don Tiki CD if a copy
ever floats up to Toronto and calls my name.

I was wondering why Mr. Mai Tai wasn't gonna try to catch them in the 50th,
and WHERE THE HELL Fluid Floyd is these days!? Nat, I don't profess to
know your tastes in-and-out, but this ain't no amateurish,
knock-it-out-for-the-sake-of-the-mini-neo-exotica-craze...this is as
beautiful as a hand-carved tiki poll! AND, fans of the amazing film BLACK
ORPHEUS(to whom Brian Phillips has a stunning connection!) will be happy
and touched to know the "new Orpheus" is a Don Tiki percussionist. I'd be
willing to wager the majority of this list would give a big ol' thumbs up
to Don Tiki!

NEW HOPE, Minn. (AP) -- Mildred F. Lane, who looked inside a
``big fluffy bun'' while another woman asked ``Where's the Beef?'',
died Saturday from injuries she suffered during a fall. She was
96.
When Ms. Lane was 80, an advertising agent
discovered her while buying yarn in a Chicago knitting shop.
She appeared in commercials for Rhodes Bread before doing spots
for the Wendy's restaurant chain.
In her most famous commercial, filmed in the
mid-1980s, Lane stood between two other women while wearing bifocals.
The trio criticized other hamburger restaurants, with one asking:
``Where's the Beef?''
For appearing in the Wendy's commercials, she
received a gold card to get a free meal every day from the restaurant
chain, said nephew Robert Egan.
GIBSONTON, Fla. (AP) -- Jeanie Tomaini, who was born without
legs and became known as ``The Half Girl'' on the carnival circuit,
died Tuesday. She was 82.
Although 2-foot-6 in stature, in spirit Mrs.
Tomaini is remembered as a giant -- a matriarch who helped shape
this tiny hamlet into an off-season haven for circus workers.
While crisscrossing the United States on the
sideshow circuit, she met Al Tomaini, who stood 8-foot-4 and
wore a size 22 shoe. They married and worked the shows together
as ``The World's Strangest Couple.''
Through it all, Mrs. Tomaini never saw her
disability as a stumbling block.
``Only if I meet a person who is morally, spiritually
and physically perfect will I ever hang my head in shame,'' she
said.

I finally got to hear these properly. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
The lead mix is by Lionrock. Now Justin Robertson, I think it is, has done
some good things in the past, but this is dreadful, a lame arrangement with
only the one 'distinctive' sound from the original, and he's obviously got a
mate who is a crap drummer in to do live drums over the top of it. It just
falls apart on every drum fill. Inexcusable. The drum and Bass mix is
better, quite old fashioned, (in DnB terms that is) like a 3 year old
Intelligent mix. But thats far and away the best thing on it. And I think
thats because it uses so much of the original track. The rest is just not
very interesting.

This has got to be doomed from the very start. Personally, I wouldn't even
dignify a project like that with the briefest of listens. What is the point
of offering a tune like that to anybody for a remix? Did Cinephile have the
original master tapes to gather individual sounds? I doubt it. Probably,
the remixers were given a copy of the original track and a couple of grand
to turn over a remix in a few days.
Charlie.
PS. A friend of mine mentioned that he just heard John Travolta's
individual accapella from Summer Nights (Grease soundtrack). John tried his
best but couldn't hold it down for very long!

Synchronicity kicks in, Sweet Jane. Just got the Black Orpheus OST (Fontana
SRF 67520), and it's a beauty, babe. Liner notes claim the score of this
1959 film helped introduce the world outside of Brazil to samba --
exaggeration or true? Score by Jobim and Luis Bonfa. The most exciting
record of the 20 or so I picked up in July/August.

BTW- if you have any passing appreciation of "traditional" Denny-ish
exotica, then the Don Tiki album is a "must have"!!! Your local record
store will probably do a special order for you; when it arrives, they
call you and you pay cash...
