Subject: (exotica) Return to list/Love Generation, Lance Link et al.
Hello, fellow listers:
I've been pretty swamped the past several weeks -- there was a mountain
of Exotica digests that never got read, let alone responded to. Hoo-ee.
There was an insane block of 3-4 weeks around April/early May where
virtually none got read...I think I need to just get on with my life and
delete the block of unread digests and live with the mystery of never
knowing what I missed.
Anyhow, I did catch some of the talk of the Love Generation. Over a year
ago I picked up a sealed dollar copy of the LP with "Groovy Summertime,"
and *by far* my favorite track, "Meet Me at the Love-In" (had anyone
mentioned that one?). Somebody said they did TWO other albums? That
definitely looked like a record that never saw a follow-up.
Coincidentally, I found cheap copies last week of Varese's "Bubblegum
Classics" Vol. 1 & 2, which had extensive notes about the incestuous
production credits on all these different recordings, including where the
Love Generation folks were turning up.
Does anyone have Volume 3? I guess there's a Lancelot Link & the
Evolution Revolution track on that one. I've got that LP, and noted it
sounded like a zillion other Bubblegum Pop records of that era, and was
wondering if the liner notes in Vol. 3 identified the Lance Link vocalist
in particular and named the other groups/names he recorded under.
It was weird hearing "It's Up to You Petula" by Edison Lighthouse again.
I played that 45 incessantly when I was 4 or 5, and have visions of that
silver Bell Records label rotating around when I hear it. But, man, a lot
of that stuff on those CDs is genuinely awful. Since my youth, I've been
a big Buddah Records fan, and I must say though a lot of it is still
genuinely fun and fabulous. Not "exotica" by a long stretch, but F-U-N.
If there are any fellow "Buddhists" out there, I've got a spare vintage
1910 Fruitgum Co. 24"x36" rolled poster from the amazing cover to the
"Indian Giver" LP (the band with the faux Indian babe) if anyone's
interested. I found *three* copies a few years back: the best-condition
one is hanging framed at Chez Toth and a friend has the third. I've
contemplated putting the spare up on eBay, but if any Listers are
interested, I'll let it go to the best offer over $20 that I get by June
4th. I'd grade it VG+ ... more details if you're interested.
Catching up on life,
Michael David Toth

This is the first mention I've ever noticed of this record or Bill Page
and his "all-ampliphonic" orchestra. I just picked it up a month or so
ago and wondered, what IS the deal on this record? It appears to be
Moogless, but it has a pretty wacky electronic sound. I assume some of
it's Ondioline and old fashioned electric organ (a la Moon Gas), but it
also appears that in the "amplification of all the instruments in the
orchestra," some of them are occasionally run through some sort of Vinnie
Bell-like effect device.
Anyone have more info on this? Did Page do any other similar records?

Subject: (exotica) FYI: Three Suns site is online
Hey, Exotica Listers:
For several months when I've gotten a chance I've tried to put time in on
my Three Suns site. They really need a comprehensive Web presence, and I
assumed responsibility to give the Suns a fitting memorial. It's at:
http://members.tripod.com/~ThreeSuns/
It's my goal to have the cover, track listing, and liner notes of EVERY
Three Suns release up there, but my initial goal is at least getting the
sixty or so different Suns albums in my collection up there. :-) Let me
know if you're willing to contribute anything, text information or
graphics scans -- I'm especially looking for weird cover variants and odd
foreign releases. A store in Cleveland has a copy of the "irregular
colored shapes cover" Love In the Afternoon, but I didn't want to drop
$11 for it. Has anyone out there got one they could scan? I also need the
green painted version of "The Sound of Christmas." (I *do* have two
different versions of "Midnight For Two" and "Easy Listening" though)
If anyone knows any stories about the multiple covers (why/when/where),
please share.
I figured there was enough stuff there to open it to the public, but it's
still horrendously "under construction" -- there's no decent central
navigation menu yet, and the only functional Discography section so far
is the Living Stereo Era. I should also have a couple more 1940s-vintage
Quicktime movies up later in May, but "Caravan" should satisfy until
then. (Let me know if you have success/difficulty with the Quicktime --
some people were reporting problems) Also, look for some nifty Three Suns
news on the site over the next few months. I'm in touch with late 1950s
Suns guitarist Del Casher and I'm working with him to issue some wild
previously unreleased live recordings on CD.
Regarding the recent "liner notes" thread, there are some masterpieces in
there. I'm perpetually amused by "WARM AND TENDER -- that's the way most
men prefer their women . . .
and their music."
(And let me take this opportunity to voice that WARM & TENDER is one wild
album, but its major weird factor is extremely subtle and not apparent
under a superficial listen. I'll admit I wasn't too crazy about it on
first listen either, but I think this album gets undeservedly panned way
too much. "Poor Butterfly," "Warm & Tender" and "Unchained Melody" and
other tracks are pure Albertine genius.)
[Special Purple Heart to Ross Orr for all the liner notes/track lists he
OCRed and contributed months back. And a tip of the hat to "Jazzpants"
the noble soul who created the first Three Suns site I'd ever run across.]
More as it happens,

If you're interested, I'll be on Zombo's Mondo Record Party here in Akron
this Sunday night doing a Memorial Day special that promises to be a
blast. It's at 91.3 FM if you're around Akron, otherwise, there's a Real
Audio feed accessible through www.wapsfm.com
From 11:00 to midnight Eastern, we're documenting perhaps the first
Memorial Day parade of 1999. We'll have play-by-play accounts of all the
exciting floats and attractions as they pass, with parade music by the
likes of Ray Martin, The Residents, Burt Bacharach, Enoch Light, Joe
Meek, and other swell folks. And you won't want to miss the Duke
Ellington Centennial Float with a mind-melting "Caravan" by Canton's own
Bluecoats drum & bugle corps!
For the midnight to 1:00 hour, we'll present a fine selection of off-beat
military and patriotic ditties, including no less than TWELVE
delightfully different versions of the "Col. Bogey March."
An experience you're sure to cherish for years to come, so set up your
lawn chair and tune in your radio or Real Audio player!

and what a memorial! Wonderful job. I hope everyone who can help to
put in the appropriate additional material will help out. It definitely
is set up very nicely and promises to be a great web resource (it already

* Gary McFarland: "latin lounge (the best of his Verve recordings)"
cd, Motor Verve 533 912, Germany, 1998
The best bossa nova, latin and pop-jazz from his Verve years.
Excellent, catchy lounge jazz, beautigful melodies (mostly his own
compositions), with McFarland doin' some nice vocalase "bya-by-bo;
pa-ba-ba" humming. A bit like Cal Tjader, but much more relaxed. Bossa
nova style covers of "Hard day's night" and "Satisfaction"; "More", and a
Bacharach song. From the liner notes by Douglas Payne: "Warm and cool,
relaxing and engaging, refreshing and provocative, elegant and casual. It's
an apt description of the music of composer, arranger, conductor,
vibraphonist and hummer/whistler, Gary McFarland=8A In 1964, at age 31,
McFarland was young enough to dig the new pop sound and effectively combine
it with his own unique jazz style". With guest musicians Gabor Szabo, Kenny
Burrell, Willie Bobo, and Grady Tate.
my rating: 4/5
* Gary McFarland: "Does the sun really shine on the moon"
cd, DCC, USA, 1998
First time CD reissue of this 1968 debut on Skye records, formed by
him and his pals Cal Tjader and Gabor Szabo. A colllection of 11
sophisticated pop covers and originals. All unpretentious, like casual,
straigtforward, warm, very nice, pleasant jazzy pop (or pop cool jazz lite
if you will). Perfect music to watch the sun go down and the moon rise on a
hot summer evening. Covers of "God only knows", "By the time i get to
Phoenix", "Lady Jane", "Up, up and away" and others. Only 30 minutes, but
priced accordingly.
my rating: 4/5

I consider klezmer totally consistent with exotica, even though on some
level it is more "authentic" than a lot of the music we talk about here.
Then again, it is a hybrid and we are all about hybrids here.
Having said that, let me just say that true klezmer LP's are really hard to
find.
I collect "Jewish" records - which for me doesn't include Hebrew records
usually - and I've found three records in three years that I'd consider
truly klezmer.
And two of them are Dave Tarras records.
There are lots of cantorial records, lots of Jewish comedy records, lots of
Mickey Katz... but klezmer is scarce.

After several paragraphs in which he basically gushes about Meco's

"I am delighted that the words DISCO and MECO are now household words."

Subject: Re: (exotica) liner notes - "Dean Martin Hits Again"
There's no touching those "Epic Sloth" liner notes (at last, a name for my
ultimate aspiration), but here's some more Stan Cornyn from "Dean Martin
Hits Again." Not as flashy as the "Epic Sloth" notes... more a documentary
of a studio session.
<quote>
The atmosphere at his recording sessions has changed. Before he hit with
"Everybody Loves Somebody" and then "The Door Is Still Open To My Heart,"
Dean Martin's sessions were hopeful. Now, hits later, they're confident.
You don't need to listen at the sessions to tell that. You can tell just by
looking. Confidence everywhere. In everyone.
IN ERNIE FREEMAN, the arranger and conductor. He's a lot busier these
weeks. He's a hot talent. Everybody's after him to do for their boys what
he did for Martin. "Ernie, what we want is... well, you know 'Everybody
Loves Somebody'..."
At the session, Ernie's all attention. Before him, seventeen yards of score
paper to become hit-or-miss records in three hours. A trombone asks, "Bar
59... E flat?" Freeman, under a battered cap that looks as if two cabbies
once wrestled for it across 76th Street, flips through his score to Bar 59.
His shirt tail hangs down two inches below his jacket. He was up all night
worrying out the brass lines. The horns are an added element tonight,
something different from the previous hit sessions. Why tamper? Freeman's
confident. He shows off the callus on his scoring hand. "Busy? Whew."
IN KEN LANE, Dean's accompanist. Pink headed from the sun, chewing gum, a
snappy smile. Used to sharing ad libs with Dean about his thinning white
hair. He wrote the music to "Everybody Loves Somebody," and is feeling
confident. No runs in his alpaca sweater either.
IN JIMMY BOWEN, the producer. He's as aware as anybody that what happens to
these seventeen yards of score can mean the difference between a million
dollars and a busted golden egg. He recorded his own hits a few years back
- -- "ex-teenage idol," he calls himself -- then got into producing. His
Southern accent gets business-like: "Kindly lemme hear the rhythm section
only from letter F." In the control booth the rhythm blasts through three
suspended-in-air hundred-pound speakers. It's loud enough to flatten the
visitors against the back wall. "A wee bit more piano," says the producer.
The engineer twists a dial. "Better," says the producer. It doesn't sound
any different. The visitors nod knowingly. Better, they agree.
Bowen, no tie, sleepy-eyed, in a metal-shiny off-color suit, tends his
sound with care. "Ohmygosh," he says, over and over, in Texan. He shoos
away a kid standing by one of the playback speakers. "You're blocking my
triplets," he says. He's the envy of every producer in town.
IN EDDIE BRACKETT, the engineer. He fondles the row of dials on the console
in front of him, urging the monitor speakers up toward the threshold of
pain. He's the only engineer in the business who controls the crucial takes
standing up, eyes so intent on the VU meters you'd think they were windows
in a starlet's dressing room.
IN THE ORCHESTRA. Always looking bored, as if they'd really rather be home
watching "Mister Ed" re-runs. The arranger asks the trumpets if they can
blow into their stands to get more of an organ sound on "Chapel." The third
trumpet replies, in a tone like you'd hear from Wrigley if you'd asked him
if he could spare a stick of gum, "I think so." Like a convention of movie
extras, they seem to be practicing some sort of East Indian unbugability.
When Martin pretends to sprinkle a little J&B on his hair as tonic, a few
of them chuckle. The bystanders, they really laugh.
IN DEAN MARTIN. Black suede loafers and white sweat socks. A rugged, great
face that looks expressive even when it's blank. Always smoking. Sitting
down whenever possible. He's shaved tonight; a photographer is there,
hoping to squeeze in the next cover shot. The producer suggests that Martin
delay a phrase at one point. "You're the boss," Dean says. His muscular
hands toss up a cigarette, he catches it in his lips, and looks over at the
photographer. "You get that?" The photographer hopes so.
Dean's casual again. He radiates confidence. But sweat is beginning to make
rings on his polo shirt. It's not all casual. As a matter of fact, it's a
special kind of hell they're all going through, making these songs for you.

Subject: (exotica) I'm feelin' a little Comp.-stipated!!??
I just got a compilation titled:
"Lift Off! With Apollo Sound (Unreleased 70's Lounge Grooves)"APSCD209
and I'm looking for information!
For the most part (90%) is this CD is fabulous and the rest is real nice.
The problem is that the liner notes are for the most part non existent.
For me the highlight of the CD is the cuts performed by the Polish Radio
Orchestra which are slick jazz vocalese style with a great instrumental
backup and it's all very groovy. Song titles by the Polish Radio Orchestra
are: "Hurry, Hurry", "Cha-coo, Cha-coo", "Searching In Vain", "Watch Your
Steps", "Bej-ge-le", "Tse-Tse", "Anxiety", & "Why Do You Say Goodbye?".
Other Performers on the disc are: The Buxton Orr Sound, Budapest Radio
Orchestra, Jones & His Quintet, Lem Arcon Sound, Dick Hunter Five, Ted Nord
Sound, and the Robin Jones Seven.
Most of the stuff is copyrighted Obelisk Music (London)/Edition Kunzelmann,
(CH Adliswil) or not copyrighted at all. There are no years mentioned except
that the disc is 1998. I'd love to know more about some of the artist on the
CD and if Apollo has released any other similar material. If you want to
check some of the songs out you can via real audio at:
http://www.tunes.co.uk/timewarp/index.htm
it's listed under easy listening.
Apollo Sound is at 32 Ellerdale Rd., London (phone 0171 435 5255) and the
disc was compiled by John Cooper, produced by Toby Herschmann. I've searched
around the Internet and I can't find any web site and little other reference
made to Apollo Sound. I've e-mailed Timewarp records to see what they have
to say. Any other help or info is as always appreciated.

Subject: (exotica) Dutch Delirium in HiFi festival
I visited a small music festival in Rotterdam (Nighttown Theatre) sunday
evening which was dedicated to Incredibly Strange Music or music you
wouldn't be caught dead with according to the flyer... Crowd close to a 100
surprise surprise. First the Aquartet took the stage and performed their
"Eine Kleine Wasser Musik" . Basically four guys in front of four big tubs
filled with water and an array of kitchen and splashing utensils, scuba
gear, gurgling etc. to create "music". Fun to watch for a minute or ten. But
put a screechy guitar with it and hey you got an early version of
Einsturzende Neubaute. Not sure if it was somehow rehearsed, the organizer's
subtle hint to finish up quick when time ran out was appreciated. Next up
was Mauro Pawloski with his band, the Belgian artrock group Evil Superstars,
who did two long covers of songs by Sun Ra (This is My Instrument) and John
Coltrane. Liked this a lot, good stage antics too. Heavy guitar music came
as a surprise to a part of audience I noticed, several people holding their
ears... Best was saved till last, a solo performance by the wonderful Fay
Lovsky on theremin, only accompanied with a rhythmbox. In the spirit of the
evening she opened with a cover of Andre Popp's "Chant de Mystere" no less.
Further songs included two own compositions (Katzenjammer and Mexican Dog),
The Swan by Saint Saens (apparently a classic amongst theremin and singing
saw enthusiasts) , Smoke gets in Your Eyes (which she partly sung - she's
got a very good voice - to point out the difference between the sound of a
theremin and a hysterical soprano) and Aloha Oe. After that another theremin
player (with a plastic one, a different sound) joined in for a few theremin
duets
for an encore: a Dutch traditional, Love me Tendel (japanese style) and a
medley where I recognized the Dutch anthem and the Eurovision tune. Great
stuff! Between the acts an exotica-DJ spinned his records, a few wacky
versions of Hawaiian War Chant and Caravan amongst others. Had a nice
evening anyway.

Also, you'll find numerous obscure TV themes, including tunes from
"The Rogues", "Straightaway", "Jonny Quest", "Staccato" and more;
a beatnik fairy tale told by Al "Jazzbo" Collins; and guitarist Earl
Backus with a tune from "Haunted Guitar" (a real buried treasure of

This album has an extremely cool cover of both Gabor and Gary seated on
motorcycles. I give high marks to this LP and any other Impulse recordings
by Gabor Szabo. Thick, glossy gatefold covers, addtional black and white
photos, informative notes, beautiful records.
The Sorcerer, Wind Sky And Diamonds (with The California Dreamers), Jazz
Raga, Spellbinder, there is another from this 1966ish period that I can't
recall. Outstanding guitar work and occasional haunting vocals .

Picked up a few Harper's Bizarre records on the advice of one of our
soft-pop devotees.
Perused the liner notes, something I never do normally.
Found this entry on one of the bandmembers:
"Dick Yount chuckles a lot about his brother, Gale. Gale likes to travel
with the group when Dick's on the road. Then the Groupies that get worked
up at the show attack Gale, thinking he's part of the show. So Gale's
losing buttons and hair. He runs, yelling "I'm nobody! I'm nobody!" Dick
alas, is nervier. He searches for life's luxuries, like a credit card with
somebody else's name on it."
BTW, Ted Tempelman is in the band.

Subject: Re: (exotica) Ethnic recommendations
Another recommended cd of Indonesian music is: Idjah Hadidjah "Tonggeret"
(Nonesuch Explorer Series / Icon Records, 1987). It is a compilation of her
recordings ranging from 1979 to 1986, in the Jaipongan style. Jaipongan was
developed in the 70s by producer, Gugum Gumbira Tirasondjaja, working from
Sundanese traditions. It's related to gamelan, with more of a dance and
lead vocalist emphasis -- but still zero Western influence. The drumming
can be very fiery... there may also be plucked or bowed string instruments.
Exotic and soaring female vocals by Idjah Hadidjah. Occasional, gruff
cross-commentary vocals by the males of the ensemble. Very exotic and
dreamy music. Give it a shot if it's still available anywhere.

And so the conversation usually goes . . . "So what kind of music do you
like?"
My reply: "Well, I like Exotica Music -- you know from the 50's and 60's --
sorta a Polynesian flare with bird calls and animal noises."
That is when I get the look.
You know the look. Like I must be crazy, or nutty or . . . .or . . . .a geek!
So here is the question(s).
1. Do you consider yourself a geek? (answer before looking at the next
question)
2. Do you think others consider you a geek?
I know, these are dumb questions but I just get tired of trying to explain
the type of music I like. And when I mention our Web mailing list . . .
well, you get the point.
Oh, my answers? Yes, no -- but not necessarly in that order.

Subject: (exotica) Charles Wilp on CD
As a fine example of how this Exotica list helps to enrich the world
market of exotic hard-to-find music may I announce the brandnew reissue
of "Charles Wilp photographiert Bunny". http://www.atatak.com
This LP first came out in 1967 and was rediscovered about a year ago by
list member and home-page-prize-winner Marco "Kallie" Kalnenek
http://weirdomusic.freeservers.com . Via the Exotica list I came to know
of this superb album and passed the tape, that Kallie had made for me,
to the indie label Ata Tak, who happen to be based in the same city as
Charles Wilp, Duesseldorf, Germany.
After brief negotiations with media-star, photographer and artist
Charles Wilp a contract was signed. Wilp, who calls himself the
"Michelangelo in Space" today, became widely known for the production of
tele ads for the German Afri Cola brand. These were the first "naked"
commercials in German TV and featured then yet unknown celebrities like
Donna Summer, Amanda Lear and Marsha Hunt. The music for these ads was
composed by Wilp himself and appears on the CD as bonus-tracks.
http://www.afri-cola.com
As I lack of any real comparisons I find it hard to describe the music
of "Charles Wilp photographiert Bunny".... small scale orchestra
arrangements performing different moods between elegant film score
dramatic and "underground" hypnotic-psychedelic expressions.
"Barbarella" comes into my mind... The unique character of this music is
spiced up by intermissions, that document the work of the photographer
with his models. You hear "Bunny" talk about her make-up, Wilp talking
to "Marcella" while taking pictures of her etc. Maybe someone else can
put it in words better than I can.
I hope this doesn't sound like too much of advertizing to you all, but I
thought it is so exotica-list-related. Plus it's a really good record
that I'd recommend no matter what.
