I can't believe how great the Twilight zone is either! And to get
both on one cd, wow, I love the modern age.
About mp3s. They work great and sound almost as good as cds but do
they ever take up a lot of space on my computer. How does that mp3
player work? It seems like it can store a few albums or so on it.
How do you store all these great big mp3 files?

With the price of CDR media, why not keep 'em uncompressed? Mp3 does squish
some of the magic out of the recording to be sure. Regular Cd's also currently
enjoy almost total ubiquity, whereas Mp3 compressed files can only be played
on a computer of a RIO player.

I know this doesn't help you but some of my favourite album COVERS are on
older Richard Hayman records, including - if push-came-to-shove - my
all-time favourite, "Serenade for Love".
I wonder if anyone else sees the same mixed messages in this cover that I
do. Someday I'll have a site and I'll put up a few of these records which
I only keep for the cover. Then you can tell me what you think. All I'll
say is that the "seduction" depicted does not appear exactly consensual.
Anyone have an explanation for how a guy who made pretty sappy Muzak all of
a sudden got inspired on the Moog?
What was the difference between Hayman's role on his own moog records and
his role on the "Hayman and Sear" records? Or was Mr.Sear always involved
on these records? I only have a reissue of the records so I don't know
what the original credits actually were.
And while you're at it, you can explain what role Harry Breuer played, if
any, on that J.J.Perry-in-disguise record "The Happy Moog".

JAZZ REVIEW
Raymond Scott Tribute: All Over the Lot, Both for Art and Incidentally
By BEN RATLIFF
It's too bad that the first thing people tend to say -- admiringly -- about
the American composer Raymond Scott is that he resists all definitions.
Those who really believe that would have to say the same about some of the
most widely heard music of the 20th century, including thriller-movie
soundtracks, television commercial jingles and video-game music. But
American cultural eccentrics are cherished fantasy figures, and Scott's
reputation has been adorned with a gold-plated question mark.
In fact, the work of this Brooklyn-raised son of Russian immigrants,
composed mostly between the 1930's and the 60's, was totally graspable --
funny, invention-obsessed in the time of Rube Goldberg, and cleverly
mirroring innovations both from Ellington and Stravinsky. He was a natural
tone-painter, composing multi-part pieces that suggested car chases or
machines gone haywire, and his best-known miniatures -- those that were used
for Warner Brothers cartoons in the 30's -- gracefully negotiate a path
between art for art's sake and incidental music. Even if you don't know
which commercial bin to put his work in, your brain knows exactly how to
enjoy it.
At the Jewish Museum on Monday night, Irwin Chusid, the director of the
Raymond Scott Archive, was host of a marvelously tight 90-minute Scott
program that included seven selections played by a live sextet* as well as a
biographical slide show and some video clips featuring Scott's music. The
program offered a multidimensional view of Scott -- from his jazz-related
compositions for the Raymond Scott Quintette (which, naturally, had six
members), like "Powerhouse" and "Oil Gusher," to some of his electronic music.
The electronic music, heard behind some commercials from the 1960's for car
batteries and detergent (which were screened for the audience), didn't try
to soothe the consumer with cuteness: they were exercises in tone color,
sometimes spooky and nerve-racking. Finally there was a recently unearthed
film made by Jim Henson in 1967 called "The Organized Mind," about taking a
walk through one's mind to see where desires, memories and fears are
stashed. Scott's electronic soundtrack perfectly suggested a laboratory
experiment gone awry.
At least as much as he was a composer, Scott was an inventor, and Monday
night's live band reflected that in some strange instruments brought along
by Brian Dewan. One was an electric zither, played with a bottleneck slide.
For the climax of "Powerhouse" he rhythmically passed a battery-operated
vacuum cleaner over the instrument's electric pickups, creating a whooshing
sound. But Scott's music wasn't just quaintly humorous. It was curious,
during Scott's "Peter Tambourine," featuring Michael Hashim on soprano
saxophone, to notice how close the sirenlike motifs and jarring structures
approached the sound of Steve Lacy's jazz sextet from the 1980's. In the
band's new arrangements, by the accordionist Will Holshouser and pianist
Wayne Barker (which, unlike Scott's, included a bit of improvising), one
heard both the 30's and the present.
* There were actually seven musicians, but in Scottian musical mathmatics
that *would* be a sextet! - Lou

Nix, at least IMHO.
_Havana_ has a few loopy moments--but it's basically "orchestral." The only
track with any measurable quantity of Scoville Units is "Tropical Merengue."
However it was definitely worth a dollar just for the cover art!
Hey, so forget this TIKI Y2K stuff--my question is, why don't we all
rendezvous at Moritz's on August 11 for a big Solar Eclipse party?
(Totality passes right over Munich.) OK, ordinarily 11:40 in the morning

I might make an exception . . .

At the moment I don't own a CD to CD recorder and probably won't until the
price gets down around $150.00 USD. On occasion I have made audio CDs on my
computer to give to folks, but I tend to copy CDs for my personal use to mp3
mostly because it's faster and takes up much less space then coping an audio
CD to wav/aiff files and then burning a CD from that.
At the highest variable bit rate setting (150-240 kbits) for mp3 encoding and
using Xing software, the high end audio quality doesn't really get effected,
(although certain dogs might lose a few notes here and there), and the file
size is still pretty damn small. I have had a few weird cases were certain
high pitched harmonics caused some encoding problems, but it's only happened a
couple of times and only when ripping off one of my CD-ROM drives.
Since I've got my computer hooked into my stereo receiver I don't really need
the audio CD and if I want to listen to something in the car I can easily go
from mp3 to cassette.
Regards,
Roy

Greetings!
My name is Kevin. I've been enjoying and learning from everyone's posts
on the Exotica mailing list for a few days now. My tastes are toward
electronic/organ/synth music. I have little interest in music leaning
toward Easy Listening. There's nothing easy about making music worth
listening to.
My all time favorite album, of which I have no copy and can't remember
the title, is one by George Segal which has more Umph, spirit, and joy than
any other record ever recorded. The guy has so damn much fun playing and it
comes through so well! Capitol's Ultra-Lounge set has captured that for the
most part. The recordings are versions of songs by people truly enjoying
their craft!
At this time I'm merely a consumer of this type of music. My web pages
will soon contain links to many of your sites. I hope to be able to
contribute something to this group in the future.
I'm pleasantly surprised to find many of you are AOL members. I am too,
my pages are located in their web-space. I often use AOL Instant Messenger
(AIM for short) when not actually on AOL under the name Ohyes937. Oh=Ohio,
yes=937 on the phone dial, 937=my area code. I chose that name to reflect
my home town and state, which I am happy with if not always proud of. ;-)

How did I 'get into' lounge? Cross an elephant and a rhino! 'Elephino!
Actually, I have an idea of how it developed. I only mention it because it
rather snuck up on me and caught me completely by surprise. I was CD
shopping one day and the UltraLounge Leopard Skin Sampler (Purple & Gold
version) caught my eye. I bought it only for the excellent cover. Upon
listening, I found I'd opened a Pandora's box. I've been addicted ever
since, but it goes back further than that. If anyone's interested, maybe we
can discuss the 'roots' of our Exotica/Lounge tastes. I work in a used book
store where we sell back issues of Playboy. I think the imagery, ads, etc.
played a large part in steering me this direction.
Finally, I was wondering if anyone knows of online chats with an
Exotica/Lounge twist. I don't mean chats ABOUT it, but a chat that captures
the mood and flavor of it. Any ideas for such a thing? It's an interest of
mine and any thoughts would be appreciated. : )
Oops, I almost forgot... Re: UltraLounge bonus tracks, featuring "The
Continental". I recall at least two 80's episodes of Saturday Night Live in
which Christopher Walken played this character. The gag was that he was so
suave but totally out of synch with the times. I believe he played the
character a bit out of character as well. His dates, if I recall correctly,
ran for the door near the end of the skits. My memory is not perfect, just
pretty darn good. Anyone? Help me out with this one.

It's a 2 CD set (also on vinyl) out on EFA- Caroline, with one CD of current
artists ( Stereolab, Sons Of Silence, Tipsy, High Llamas, Coldcut and others

Thomas recordings.
The first disc with remixes is kinda of interesting, however I am quite
dissappointed by the original Thomas material, it is definitely not key stuff

Most of the tinkered songs are from the "Space Patrol" album.
Question #2 1/2:
I didn't see Combustible Edison or Millionaire Mike in the line up of artists
playing on this, which seemed odd. I haven't seen the liner notes so I'm
unclear who brought this one all together. Did any of the hands of Com Ed
fiddle with this release, in some way?

All Walken and the Saturday Night Live Crew were doing were adapting the 50's
afternoon TV program aimed at housewives that a writer probably caught at the
Museum Of Film & TV in NYC. SNL hasn't had an original idea since the late
'80s....oh forgive me there's the fabulous Pat skit! (note the subtle sarcasm

These are all on Plastic label (Florence, Italy), and are
compilations of italian library music from the 60's and early 60's. I
would surely recommend them, along with other Plastic issue of the
same kind called "Spectrum". All instro grooviness fully guaranteed
to please your aural sense during those special moments.
Vol. 2 comes packaged with a 1999 calendar with cartoons of Satanik
70's pulp fiction, which makes it alone worthwhile. Also vol. 1 is
nicely packaged with some extra stuff (repros of 60's/70's italian
flicks).
In case you're wondering, I haven't any connection with
Plastic and I ain't makin' a lira if these do sell or don't.
Check them out at www.plastic.it
> "Harlem Shuffle/The Sound of Blaxploitation"
on Plastic, also; but this is seventies' funk. Not as brilliant as
the above ones, in my opinion.
> PULSAR MUSIC LTD. "Milano Violenta"
It's a soundtrack of a 70's italian police movie, in the vein of the
german releases "Beat At Cinecitta' - vols 1+2". To be sincere, I
still haven't heard it, but it may be that one track or two is
featured in the german comps.

Plastic as well. Tracks from the group are featured in the
Stroboscopica comps. Better start from there, IMHO.
Enjoy!

I'm up in the air on it. On one hand I half follow the philosophy of folks
like MP3.com who believe the record industry needs to change to deal with the
existence of home digital reproduction, be it CD to CD recorders, DAT, mp3,
mp4 and other formats, instead of trying to outlaw it. Nearly every one of us
has taped an album or made a comp for a friend, and I doubt that there were
many calls made to lawyers prior to making these copies.
Unless you're a hermit, part of the enjoyment of music is sharing it with
other people, it's a fact of life. The technology to copy records has been
there since the mass production of tape recorders, so it's not so much about
IF people will copy or not.
What is Phillips claiming that people will do with the Phillips CD recorder.
One of their TV commercial has a young man giving a DJ at a club a comp CD
that the young man made on his frickin' Phillips CD recorder. That ain't home
taping and it sure ain't personal use. Do you think, it's all public domain
music? Maybe it's his own band? Do you think the young man called his lawyer
before running down to the club in the commercial? What message do our good
friends at Phillips want us to walk away with?
Questions, questions, questions. Who's got the answers? Who's got more
questions? Lay 'um on me. Lay 'um on us all, baby!
That's about it from Moon Base Alpha,

Is there a Don Tiki web site?

We played 2 cuts by Don Tiki in our parade on Mardis Gras day and it
was sunny and hot outside! Inside peoples houses it was inside with
ac and w/o Don Tiki.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

Hey, yeah, you name it! I'm planning an electric pagan tribal ritualistic
Madonna-burning Tiki-resurrection psychedelic-yet-cocktail-compatible
maybe-chicken-slaughtering dramatic-musical sun-worshipping outdoor event.
Evening meeting at the Trader Vic's. Everybody 's welcome.

Not *so* mysterious. It's the label run by record producer and one-time
Lt.Gov. of California Mike Curb. What IS mysterious is why he won't
put out CDs of all that great Davie Allan stuff he recorded.

From: Ross Orr <rotohut@ic.net>
Subject: (exotica) Tech: I Have Seen The Future
By weird coincidence, two things happened to me today which blew my mind
about how far digital audio tech has gone. . . After this, it's really
clear to me that the whole music distribution business is going to get
turned inside out within the next few years.
I hadn't played with MP3's any before--but I was pretty skeptical that you
could squash the byte size down by 11:1 without doing something pretty
savage to the sound quality. So when Lou posted about ComEd's "Laura's
Aura" being available, I thought, OK, this is the perfect chance to compare
it directly to the CD and see how bad it really is.
To make it a fair comparison, I extracted the uncompressed CD audio onto my
hard disk, and used SoundApp (mac) to listen to both soundfiles through
headphones. I'm stunned. They're virtually indistinguishable. The only
weirdness I could notice right away was that when Miss Lili takes in a
breath, it sounds steady on the CD but "quivers" slightly on the MP3. (Of
course on this particular song, any extra "shimmering" would be pretty
unnoticeable.)
Now over my modem this still took about half an hour to download, so it's
not super-practical as a routine way to get music at the moment. . . but
modems are a technology dinosaur in the long run. . .
The other mind-blower was that one of the listees sent me a one-off CDR of
Bernie Green's Stereo Action _Futura_, plus Hugo Montenegro's _Lady In
Cement_ soundtrack. (Despite my insane gratitude--you know who you are--
I think I'll leave this person anonymous for the moment.) _Cement_ is
one wild LP, incidentally. . . kind of Zappa meets Bacharach, lurching
from heavy fuzztone to delicate harpsichord.
To my ears, this sounded great--basically a perfect reproduction of what
you would hear playing the vinyl. Plus glossy color inserts with the
original cover art! So, we're at a point when virtually pro-quality
duplication can come out of somebody's desktop computer.
Man, if somebody can figure out a working business model for this brave new
world I would sure like to hear about it. . . The old concept that you are
going to pay to own the object looks to be in real trouble here. . .

<smaller>Recently, I received an email message that contained a Virus
called HAPPY99.EXE (technically it was a Worm). I may have inadvertantly
sent it off when I corresponded with you over the past week or so.
Thankfully, I received notification from some friends that this occurred.
As a result, I wanted to pass along some info about how to detect it and
remove it.

<smaller>If you have NOT executed the file attached to my email message,
called HAPPY99.EXE, then all you need to do is delete the message.
Otherwise, you need to read the info that follows to learn how to remove
it before it spreads even further. Briefly, if you had opened up an
attachment that displayed fireworks on your screen, then you were more
than likely infected. Any email or newsgroup postings you have sent out
since were probably infected. Below are links to Norton's and McAfee's
Anti-virus Websites that contain more detailed info about the Virus and
how it propogates. I have included basic steps on removing the Virus
(worm) also.
