Bob Theile also produced the two albums by Eden's Children in '68. Cool
psych with a goodly dose of jazz.
Another excellent soundtrack is from "Candy"; music by David Grusin (who
doesn't even mention it on his web page). Highly recommended blend of psych
and Now-Sound (except for the Byrds and Steppenwolf cuts).
When downloading e-bay pics that show up as "html" rather than "jpeg" or
"gif", just manually type in the extension (I use "jpg"). Paint Shop Pro
handles them with ease, so I imagine Photo-shop will do the same.

Excellent idea! Old farts should stay the hell out of the way. People that
turn twenty-one on New Years Eve/Day should get complimentary Drake's

case).
Me, I'll be home sauteeing shrimps, listening to Jimmy Smith and hoping

Subject: (exotica) The Rembrandt of Black Velvet
From the Wall Street Journal 2/26/99, edited for space:
"The 'Rembrandt of Black Velvet' Finally Gets Some Appreciation"
Every great art genre has a legendary master. Even black-velvet
painting....often mass-produced, garish and featuring weeping elvises
and bleeding bullfighters, velvet art is synonymous with kitsch.
But now its gaining respectability, or at least the art of the late
American expatriate Edgar Leeteg is. "Leeteg coined everything that we
think of today as velvet," says John Turner, co-curator of a museum show
of black-velvet painting that runs until April 4 at the Huntington Beach
Art Center in CA. "He is the Rembrandt of black velvet." The exhibition,
titled "A Rascal in Paradise," after the book by James Michener that
devotes a chapter to Leeteg, features 14 paintings and a grass-canopied
bamboo tiki bar. At the opening the curators wore leis.
Is the exhibition just a fluke? Not according to David Price, who
co-founded Seattle's Museum of Velvet Painting a year ago. His
museum...is showing in nightclubs until it finds a permanent home. "I
have a passion for it," he says. "It might just be a fetish."
Mr. Turner credits renewed interest in Leeteg to "a rebirth of the
Polynesian tiki movement," that 1950s decorative homage to the South
Pacific. Think umbrella-topped drinks, ukelele music and bamboo-framed
paintings of hula girls, a popular theme with the artist.
Leeteg was a minor celebrity in the South Pacific, as much for his wild
ways as for his artwork. In a letter to his art dealer he described
himself as a "fornicating, gin-soaked dopehead." Collectors prefer to
call him..."the American Gaugin." The artist sold his first painting in
1933 for $4 and a sandwich. Prices rose to about $15,000 after his death
in the 1950s, when Michener immortalized him...Today, his works would
bring about $5,000.
Would Leeteg have approved of his newfound museum respectability? He
once wrote, "I frankly would rather have my paintings displayed in a gin
mill...than buried up with the rest of dead art."
END
Whoda thunk it? Ok wheeler dealers, hit the thrifts and then on to
E-Bay. My main question though is why does the exhibit need co-curators?
Day and night bartenders?

Subject: (exotica) Sub Pop goes MP3
SAN DIEGO and SEATTLE, Feb. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Legendary independent
label Sub Pop Records announced today that it will release multiple songs in
the MP3 format on MP3.com (http://www.mp3.com) and from Sub Pop's site
(http://www.subpop.com).
"The job of any record label should be to reach out to a given artist's
fans by any means necessary," said Jonathan Poneman, co-founder and CEO of
Sub Pop. "Let others debate the so-called MP3 controversy; Sub Pop is ready
to do it's job."
Sub Pop gained notoriety in the late 80s with early releases by Seattle
rock staples Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney, as well as national bands
Afghan Whigs, L7, Reverend Horton Heat, and countless others.
This arrangement with MP3.com will highlight Sub Pop's current roster,
releasing single tracks from the label's new breed of successful artists.
The initial offering of downloadable tracks will include:
Saint Etienne, "Sylvie" (radio edit)- from Good Humor
More than just a band, Saint Etienne has become something of a
sensation, gaining new fans at an alarming rate. Saint Etienne will be
turning heads and wooing the masses in Spring, as they embark on their first
comprehensive U.S. tour.
The Pernice Brothers, "Overcome By Happiness" - from Overcome By Happiness
The Pernice Brothers have been embraced by critics and fans alike with
their debut release, Overcome By Happiness. The album was named in several
year-end top ten lists, including The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly
and Magnet.
The Murder City Devils, "I Want A Lot Now (So Come On)" - from Empty
Bottles Broken Hearts
Whether playing small clubs or sharing an arena's stage with Pearl Jam,
The Murder City Devils gain hundreds of new fans nightly, as people flock to
the stage to revel in the band's literally fiery performances.
Combustible Edison, "Laura's Aura" - from Impossible World
Combustible Edison spent 1997 recording Impossible World, which sees the
band maintaining their trademark easy listening / lounge pop sound, while
adding an electronic edge.
"Clearly, Sub Pop understands that to market music, one must go to the
music buyers. Sub Pop has a rich history in the music industry and their
progressive approach to music marketing while embracing the Internet,
coupled with their excellent roster, positions them well for the future,"
said Michael Robertson, digital music guru and CEO of MP3.com.
MP3.com is the number one music download site on the Internet, logging
millions of monthly visitors in search of great, new music and news of the
ever-burgeoning digital music revolution. MP3.com has exploded
exponentially over the last year as music lovers have discovered the future
of music delivery. The site is the clear and undisputed leader in providing
MP3 formatted music to consumers.
The Webby-nominated MP3.com hosts tens of thousands of songs from many
thousands of artists available for download in the MP3 audio format.
MP3.com has busily championed artists' rights while facilitating many tens
of millions of legal downloads -- over 14 million to date.
Sub Pop Records expects to release more tracks with MP3.com as part of
the effort to broaden it's artists' exposure via improving technologies.

I like to pull out the Sugarman Three cd when people are over and I want some
pleasant funky background music. Same thing with Nino Nardini. As for the
Daktaris, it's not bad but when you've got all those amazing Fela cd's
available, why bother with a pale imitation? In general, none of these cd's
live up to the hype of the liner notes found on the back of each one. I
haven't heard the Spike's Choice compilation, but I have a feeling that by
virtue of its variety and (I assume) "best picks" aspect since the songs were
originally released as singles, its probably the one to get. Of course, if
Br. Cleve says the Sugarman Three are worth seeing live, he's probably right.

Has anyone heard this one yet?
It's a 2 CD set (also on vinyl) out on EFA- Caroline, with one CD of current
artists ( Stereolab, Sons Of Silence, Tipsy, High Llamas, Coldcut and others
) playing around with the music of Mr. Thomas. The second CD is original old
Thomas recordings.
Does anyone know what songs are tinkered with by the current artists on this?
Question #2 1/2:
I didn't see Combustible Edison or Millionaire Mike in the line up of artists
playing on this, which seemed odd. I haven't seen the liner notes so I'm
unclear who brought this one all together. Did any of the hands of Com Ed
fiddle with this release, in some way?

Have never seen a good collection of this type of music on sheet
music, but have been collecting individual sheet music for some time.
Got quite a lot of stuff from EBay last year. This is a more
expensive and cumbersome way to do it, but vintage sheet music can
often look great and nice to own. Picked up for about $2 or $3 each a
nice 'delicado' with lyrics this way, as well as 'the breeze and I',
'south of the border', 'peter gunn'.
There are quite a few good mancini books, come to think of it.

nope.
I assume the project was brought together by Maxwell Implosion, who was
been working with Peter Thoms, and the Bungalow head guys Holger and
Marcus, who brought PT into the contemporary market.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- After singing professionally for 51 years, Patti Page
won a Grammy Wednesday on her first and only nomination -- for best
traditional pop vocal performance for ``Live at Carnegie Hall, The 50th
Anniversary Concert.''
She accepted her trophy with thankfulness and humor. When the first of her
11 grandchildren was born, Page noted backstage that her family members
asked what they should call her.
``Grammy,'' Page replied, ``because I'll never get one. Now they can call
me grandma.''
*------
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- If anyone should get an award for lasting through the
changing times, it's Burt Bacharach, who has won a Grammy in three different
decades.
He received his first in 1967, two in 1969 and another in 1986 before
winning again this year.
``It's really very significant for me and my work as I have been able to
span as many decades -- I'd like to go another 10,'' he said.
This year he and singer Elvis Costello won for best pop collaboration with
vocals for ``I Still Have That Other Girl.''
``I can't say I've learned any of Burt's secrets because I can't write like
him,'' said Costello, who has gained fame for pop songs like ``Veronica.''
Costello said the two have enjoyed working together and just finished
recording music for the upcoming ``Austin Powers'' sequel the night before
the ceremony.
``This has been among the most exciting things I have ever done,'' Costello
said. ``It was great to sit at the piano and write together.''

I don't think the French 'Ye-Ye' is the equivalent of the Schlager. As
far as I know 'Ye-Ye' refers only to French sixties-music. Sort of the
French answer to the Beatles and beat in general. Correct me if I'm
wrong!

Subject: (exotica) Vinyl Karma
I always get a kick out of reading about other people's record
scores on this list, though I've never gotten around to actually
posting one of my own before. But I just had to share yesterday's
vinyl karma experience with somebody who might appreciate it! I told
my wife about it, but she just thinks I'm nuts.
Yesterday, I went into my local used record emporium - an
ENORMOUS cavern of a place with (supposedly) over two million
records in stock and where they never met an inflated price they
didn't like (you can buy a beat-to-hell mono copy of "African Jazz"
for $150--I'm not kidding!).
Decided to rummage around in the ethnic music section, hoping maybe
the staff price gouger hadn't made it that far. While going through
the "Far East" section I ran across an apparently unplayed (and
unpriced) stereo copy of "Orienta" by the Markko Polo Adventurers.
I strolled up to the front (a three day hike), shoved it in front
of the serial killer behind the cash register and said "How much for
this?". His eyes lit up. He said, "Ooh, Living Stereo! And
unplayed, too. Wow!" My heart sank. I knew what was coming next.
After hemming and hawing for a minute, he looked up and said, "Seven-
ninety-eight?". Knowing this place, that could very well mean seven-
HUNDRED-and ninety-eight dollars, so I coolly asked, "Seven DOLLARS
and ninety-eight cents?". "Yeah," he answered. "That okay?"
I quickly coughed up the dough and beat it out the door, not quite
believing my incredible luck. For those of you who find these kind
of bargains all the time, this might not seem like a very big deal.
But around here, you just don't see stuff like this and, if you do,
you can bet you'll have to take out a second mortgage to buy it.
This copy of "Orienta" looks like it's never felt the stylus before.
Absolute stone mint beauty! I also bagged a sealed stereo copy of
Roger King Mozian's famous "El Twist".
So take a serial killer to lunch this week. Maybe he's got some
records in the basement he'll sell cheap.

Subject: (exotica) Mooon Gasssss!
Just got the Moon Gas/Twilight Zone two-fer a couple of days ago from
Jack Diamond. and All I can say Is WOW! Can you believe I had never
heard Moon Gas before? (Well I can't)
And the timing! I had been playing with running backround sounds on web
pages the night before, and thought that it would be fun to loop
something as music-bed toa web page. It was late and I was out of
steam, so I quit. The next day my package arrived, and as soon as the cd
tray closed I FUCKIN JUMPED OUT OF MY SKIN! I fired up the Soundedit16,
and in 5 minutes had a peerfect loop of the first few bars of Moon Gas.
In ten more minutes it was up on the site and incorporated into the
background of my "streaming audio" page.
I mention this for a two reasons: 1) to hip y'all to a great record 2)
to find out if this sound file is being heard.
1) What can I say? Dick Hyman + the ethereal and beeyoooteeeful voice
of Mary Mayo. It's freaky and quirky and electonic-y and FUN! I also
got the Celebs at their worst vol 1 and 2. I read the posts about #2
being a little thin, but I have not had a chance to listen yet. Vol 1 is
a freakin' riot. I love stuff like that.
2) I have been getting a lot of hits on the site (and nobody knows about
it but the list) , but not much feedback.
I'm interested in finding out if the streaming audio is working okay,
and at what speeds. Theoretically a 28.8
modem would receive the Fantastica! stream, but would like to hear your
experience. Also, the Moon Gas loop
Should play automatically when a user accesses the "streaming" page - I
think this might be browser-dependant
and am therefore quite interested in hearing if it's working for you.
If you have not been to the page to sample the hour-long Mp3 stream of
Fantastica! do yourself a favor and make time to do it. You will be
astounded by this excellent program. Http://xtabay.com from there
click on the
"streaming audio" link.
2.5) Who is accessing the site from the host
.firewall.cacourt.us.gov??? yer scarin' me.

They seem fine to me. You do understand though, that fakebooks are not in
any way a bar by bar transcription of recordings. They supply the lead
melody, chords, basic structure. But for fleshing it all out, it's up to you.

The bonus tracks are primarily by some guy called "The Continental". There
was some discussion on him earlier, when I posed the same question, but
apparently he had a TV show in the 50's in LA or something and also must
have cut a record on Capitol.
I couldn't find a track list or anything, and have tried contacting
Capitol, to no avail.
If you find anything else out, let me know!

Subject: (exotica) MP3's
I have been trading Exotica (and non-Exotica) MP3's too.
In fact, I recently swapped a few discs with ten or so albums.
It's a great way to test stuff out.
And for those lawyer types who are out there, I could easily cut my own CD
with a CD burner, but I'd rather buy the original. Don't know why.
So, now I know for sure I want to get the Baxter 2 disc set (whereas before
it wasn't even on my list), but I want to stay away from "You Can Be Wrong
About Boys." Before I don't think I would have bought either, but I might
have picked YCBWAB at cut-out price, just because it's on sequel. Now I
can be a well-informed consumer.
Also, I have used them to create my own "Greatest Hits" compilations,
although for decidedly non-Exotica groups, where a nice, single disc
Greatest Hits disc just doesn't exist.
It's handy.
Peter
