Am I alone in thinking that Les's instrumental contributions to the "Wild
in the Streets" soundtrack were less than inspiring?   Not exactly the
height of fake hippy sitar rock.
Now Stu Philips on the other hand, is a different thing.  His instrumental
pieces on the "Angels from Hell" soundtrack are amazing.  If this hasn't
been reissued, then it should be.

I have both and found each to be surprisingly good. I already had Dusty In
Memphis on vinyl, but its loaded with "bonus" tracks. Dusty In London is the
more important one of interest to this list IMHO, but Memphis isn't just Stax
revisited, its got a lush sweet sound.

Have any of you insiders heard this one yet?

It's a 2 CD set (also on vinyl) out on EFA- Caroline, with one CD of current
artists (  Stereolab, Sons Of Silence, Tipsy, High Llamas, Coldcut and others
) playing around with the music of Mr. Thomas.  The second CD is original old
Thomas recordings.

Does anyone know what songs are tinkered with by the current artists on this?

Question #2 1/2:
I didn't see Combustible Edison or Millionaire Mike in the line up of artists
playing on this, which seemed odd.  I haven't seen the liner notes so I'm
unclear who brought this one all together.  Did any of the hands of Com Ed
fiddle with this release, in some way?

When I lived in New York, I heard this explanation (though it may be an
Urban Myth):
The "Flat Iron Building" which is long and thin and triangularly wedge
shaped, is on lower Broadway at 23rd St. Its distinctive shape causes some
violently swirling winds which would tend to blow women's skirts up. The
local men knew this and would loiter about at lunch hour for the free
'show'. The cops would then have to engage in enforcing the "23 Skidoo" -
chasing the would be oglers from 23rd Street.
I don't know if it's true, but it's a very New York story.

I was watching Barbarella on TV the other night - the first time I've seen
it since I was  a kid - and I was kind of surprised to hear that the music
was almost identical in spirit to the kind of "Now Sound" stuff that I've
been marinating in lately.
I really liked the music but I have to say that I thought it was fairly
inappropriate for the film.  Of course I can't say what I would have
thought at the time but I think the film deserved a more spacey/trippy sound.
Having said that, it reminded me in particular of a couple of records I
picked up last week so that was just an introduction.

Bob Thiele "Do the Love" and Bob Crewe Generation "Music to Watch BIRDS By"
(my emphasis)
I'm assuming some people here are familiar with Bob Thiele's "Light My
Fire" record with Gabor Szabo and Bill Plummer on electric sitar.
Like that record, this one also has Bob's "New Happy Times Orchestra".
I love these names.  On the "Light my fire" record, the chorus is called
"The California Dreamers".  On this record they're called "The Sunflower
Singers".
And instead of Gabor and Bill, "Do the Love" features special guest....
Steve Allen!
There are a couple of covers but the highlight of the record are "Do the
Love" which basically has the Sunshine Singers repeating those words over a
pleasant Now Sound-y melody and "Jet me to Frisco" which has a few more
lyrics.

Having basically passed through an obsession with instrumental covers of
sixties tunes, I'm now trying to move on to an obsession with music that
has the same fake-sixties feel but doesn't cover familiar hits.  What would
I call that?

"NOW-soundtrack" as opposed to "NOW sound"?

The Bob Crewe record is a classic of that genre I just identified. (The
Brass Ring would fit in there too but they do more covers.)

Did Bob Crewe have any "hits" after "music to watch girls by"??  There's a
great tune here called "Melancholy Serenade" which I think could have been
a hit.  But on the front cover it points out  "featuring Winter Warm and
Birds of Britain".

Actually the writing credit on "Melancholy Serenade" is "Gleason" and the
tune does have a kind of TV-theme show sound.  So could this have been
Jackie Gleason's TV-theme just made cooler?  It does sound kind of familiar...

Anyway, "Birds of Britain" has lyrics printed on the inside cover but no
actual lyrics sung in the song.

The first stanza goes like this:

Chasin after chicks - is kicks
But when I spend my time in England
Here's the word
I want a bird!

That got me dreaming about Twiggy... at least until I saw Barberella.

Dusty in memhis is simply terrrific all the way through whether you're
a dusty fan or just getting introduced to her.  The soul standards are
remade in dusty style and it works!  She takes her wonderful voice and
interprets these songs in a soft dusty pop way that won't let you down
if you like vocals.

Her box set is cheap at BMG music service if you are a brand new member.

Jackie Gleason did write the song. It's been a long time but I believe it's
the theme to "The Honeymooners". He was almost proud of the fact he could
not read music but could compose songs.

The arrangements on all those LP's he did are all his. According to the
liner notes of the Capitol 2 CD set he would hire a "longhair", the name
used in the notes, to write out the charts to his specifications. It sounded
like he was very hard to work with. But he paid well.

The Ondioline page at the "120 Years of Electronic Music" site points out
that the instrument (invented in 1938) was also available under the names
Pianoline and Orcheline. Has anyone seen _these_ names in any liner notes??

theatre music as well as in light music and cabaret. The Ondioline was
marketed in Germany as the "Pianoline" and in The Netherlands as the
"Orcheline" and made a notable appearance during the Brussels World Fair
(1958) when it was played on top of the Atomium building.

why this pricks my ears up is that i had the fortunate pleasure of meeting

The French composer Olivier Messiaen composed a few pieces for Ondes Martenot
(Ondioline), both solo and with orchestra. His piece "Turangalila" was
composed
in 1948 for Ondes Martenot and orchestra. I don't know of any recordings from
that time, but I have an LP on the MHS (Musical Heritage Society) label that
has some of his solo Ondes Martenot pieces on it. The LP is from the 60s.

The recording I have, of solo Ondes Martenot, is amazing stuff.

Early recordings of "Turangalnla" may exist... I've never seen one.

Well, Miss Fondle (et al)

Buy this cd and you'll feel damn close to it!

Its been around as a quasi-legit hard to find two cd release
for a year or two, and is a-m-a-z-i-n-g !   I must have taped
it for half a dozen friends I'd played it to.   They pestered
me to death.

Frank, Dino, Sammy...in a small club sized room for near two
hours roastin' each other and singing songs and bits of songs.

Run don't walk, to pick this up if you have even a remote
curiousity !     A must !

The Barbarella soundtrack has just been reissued on lovely red vinyl.
(Dusty Groove has it in stock, or at least they did last time I checked)
And wouldn't you know it - Bob Crewe did the soundtrack (which would
explain why it reminded you of "Music to Watch Girls By"!

I personally think the soundtrack suits the movie, but I think we had
this soundtrack "discussion" a while back, so I'm not going there
again...  ;-)

I have to say that Isaac Hayes stuff is consistently the best of what I found.

Counts, El Coco, and lots of sweet-soul groups. A former record man in Boston

Subject: (exotica) FS/Dino/SD Summit Cd - Follow Up

Just listened to part of the new "The Summit" CD and it is indeed a different
show from the one that's been circulating all these years.  The sound is also
marginally better, BUT-- and it's a big one-- Dino's hilarious monologues have
been totally deleted from his set, and the official release is altogether less
satisfying than the unexpurgated double disc set.

The original two cd 'set' (sold separately, mind you) is on Jazz Hour.  Some
may still be "out there" at retail.   Stores with deep stock and low volume
may be the ticket.

Felt I needed a follow up, as I trumpeted how amazing *the original release*
was...assuming the re-release would be the same show, unedited.  Spoke too
soon.

Oh, Mike screwed that up!  But there really is a Tiki Dan out there with a
personalized plate that says "TikiDan" and I saw him on the 10 freeway one day
- - in like a 4-door Hyundi car.... then Reverend Al of the Cacophony Society
emailed me and says he ran across a "Tiki Dan'" website when he was looking up
stuff and says it is pretty substantial. Well, even if it isn't Tiki Dan, it's
still "tiki" something though.

I haven't read that discussion and I agree with Cheryl here. The film tells a
fairy tale and puts the emphasis on the poetic things of a space saga. A
more"spacey" soundtrack (more Theremin, Moog etc.) might have been too technical
and also too redundant in the end. A more trippy score on the other hand might
have taken away the film's main stream appeal and could have turned him into a
B-Movie. I think good film music never illustrates a movie 1 to 1; it rather adds
the things that you cannot see, sometimes to an extend that it literally becomes
the opposite of what you see. The way Barbarella sounds it is the ultimate "camp"
film and I can't quite see how this could be managed with one of the musical
alternatives you suggest, Nat.

Messiaen is great. He transcribed lots of birdsong, too, and arranged
it for orchestra, which I suppose is marginally relevant to the list.

The Ondes Martenot isn't the same instrument as the Ondioline, though.

The Ondes Martenot was invented 1928 by Maurice Martenot, the
Ondioline in 1940 by George Jenny (not to mention the Ondium
PΘchadre, 1930, H. PΘchadre).

Messiaen also composed pieces for multiple Ondes Martenot, and as I've
mentioned before, if anyone knows titles of these or recordings, I'd
be grateful to find out. I heard 'em a few years back on Radio 3, but
I think that was a concert performance.

An interesting side-thingummy to this discussion is provided by the
liner notes of Frank Zappa's "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore
Vol. 5" (I think), in which he mentions that he had a meeting with
Vadim to discuss the possibility of him supplying the music for
Barbarella. I've been trying to imagine it... I can't.

Arrgghh!  It's Bobby SCOTT, one of the most under-recognized talents in the
business.  Bobby was a performer (had first Top 20 hit of "Chain Gang"),
composer (viz. the above), arranger (for Les & Larry Elgart's "Girl
Watchers" LP, among many others), pianist (on most of Quincy Jones' LPs
from 1960 on), songwriter (most notably the 60s space age pop standard "A
Taste of Honey"), producer ("Sunny" by Bobby Hebb, "He Ain't Heavy" by the
Hollies, many others), and A&R man (Jesse Colin Young (not big on my list,
but hey, he sold well)).

But yes, this is a great record.  Almost makes up for all those "Hooked on
Swing" records Larry went on to do.
