Ouch...it really hurts to hear that sellers can be such pushy assholes
on eBay! I've been selling (and buying) on eBay for almost a year, and
I've never run into that kind of situation. Here's what I would do if
it was me who had received that email:
Email the seller back with a short comment about waiting to inspect the
item before leaving feedback, since that is what the system is set up
for. Then, should shipping/item condition, etc. hold up to
expectations/descriptions, positive feedback will be left. Simple as
that! If the seller refuses to deal with you unless some bogus feedback
is left first, don't send any money to the schmo and send eBay a
complaint about his selling tactics, and be specific. They may be able
to remedy the situation with the seller. DON'T fly onto the negative
feedback thing until all avenues have been explored, lest you look the
hothead. That kind of crappy practice on the seller's part really
tarnishes what is usually a great resource.
You know, upon reading the first excerpt above, it struck me that they
meant that they would email you 3 times: 1) on receipt of payment, 2)
when item is shipped and 3) when feedback is left...let's hope that's
what they meant, and all will be hunky-dunky.
I wish you luck, Michele!

So says one of the cool British chicks ("birds"?) in this flick I only
caught bits and pieces of, the other night. It was supposedly called
"Naked Youth" and was made in 1959. I recognized Adam Faith as the guy
with a guitar and if that was him singing, that's the best I've ever heard
him. I also recognized an impossibly young Oliver Reed dancing down in the
rock cavern and I think Christopher Lee owned the strip club.
The music was a lot more "authentic" than most American "rebellious youth
movies" of the same period And there was a neat underlying theme tying in
underground rock caverns with underground bomb shelters.
Anyone know anything about this movie? I couldn't pay complete attention
to it but what I saw, I liked.
"If you want to fight, join the army. That's the place for squares".

Subject: (exotica) Forever Lounge again
Sorry for the weird messages. I hope this comes out better this time.
Hi Gang,
Well the glut of misinformation is starting to hit the masses via the new
book Forever Lounge. It is quoted as being the Laid Back Price Guide to the
Languid Sounds of Lounge Music. Here are my first observations...........
Almost EVERY single photograph of an album is out of focus. They are 90%
blurry. This is totally unacceptable since most of these records are
collected for the cover alone. They didn't even include classic album
covers just plain mediocre ones that most people don't even care about.
PRICES Here's the BIG joke. Most of the albums in this book are priced
$5-3. $5 for NM and $3 for VG+ that's for stereo. If you have the mono
copy deduct 75%. So if you had a Mint copy of Dick Scory's Music for Bang
Baroom and Harp which is worth $5 in mint condition (stereo) a mint mono is
worth about $1.25!!! Yeah Right.
Other pricing is just as ridiculous....Mundell Lowe's Satan In High Heels
album mint in stereo $5. All Bob Thompson albums $3-5
Three pages of The Three Suns records ALL $3-5 except for the Fever and
Smoke album $25.
Then there is mispricing twice........Harry Revel's album Music Out of The
Moon (Capitol 1947) listed at $20-12 while the same album listed under Les
Baxter was priced at $40-24. H-E-L-L-Ooooo!
Biggest shocker was that ALL Leo Diamond albums were listed for $5-3. Hey
if anyone here on this list has Skin Diver Suite in mint condition for five
dollars I will take 20 copies!!!!
Henri Rene's classic album Music for Bachelors same thing $5-3 with
absolutely no mention of the Jayne Mansfield cover!!!!!!!!!
Here's a good one..... Jean Jacques Perrey album The Happy Moog listed for
$50-30. Not too bad until you look under Harry Breuer where the same album
number and all is listed for $5-3.
Also they list the Switched on Santa album on Pickwick as Jean Jacques
Perrey going under the name Sy Mann. I guess all the other Sy Mann albums I
have are really Jean Jacques Perrey too huh? This is just plain idiocy.
These people have no clue what the market is and definitely did not do any
researching on pricing or proofreading this thing with any accuracy. A few
items came close to the mark but at least 75% is waaaaaay off.
Other things that didn't make sense. They have a picture of Hair Goes Latin
next to the Edmundo Ros section. Looks good but the album is not even
listed. Oh, by the way ALL Marty Gold albums in mint condition are only $5.
They forgot to mention he had a Moog album though. Ferrante and Teicher's
Soundproof is listed at $75 but they didn't include Soundblast. DUH!! Maybe
they thought it was the same album.
More of the Bigger names like Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Arthur Lyman are
priced a little more accurate but not by much. I wouldn't say that the
Kaliedoscope album by Les Baxter is worth the
same as the Passions box $35 would you?
I have found so many mistakes in pricing and overall misinformation that I
had to view my disgust on this mailing list. Feel free to add any comments.
The only reason I bought this thing was to brush up on my discographys. But
even this falls flat. This is a total waste of time, money and effort and
does nothing to enhance the beauty of this genre we call Lounge.
Whew!

Another title? I know it under the titles: "Beat Girl" and "Wild For
Kicks". Fun movie. A bit grittier than the US J.D. flicks. It seems like my
copy might be missing a few spicy bits. But maybe they were always just
implied.

Yep, that's Christopher Lee as the evil strip joint operator. Psychotronic
notes that the female lead, Gillian Hills, also appeared in "Blow-Up".

It's said to be John Barry's first film score. Cool crime-jazzy stuff. I
don't know if he was involved with Adam Faith's songs or not. The John
Barry Seven *might* get a moment or two of screen time in the club scenes
- -- dunno if it's them or not.

I, for one, would like a definitive discography which says which of the
Martin Denny albums have no Denny involvement. My general approach is to
read the liner notes--if Denny is involved, the notes say so. If not
involved, no mention is made of the musicians or at least Denny is not
mentioned.
HOWEVER, if I don't have the album, I can only guess by the title. For
instance, the album "Martin Denny plays Mondo Cane" *SOUNDS* like a "ghosted"
effort, but I can't be sure until I get more info. I bid on it in a recent
auction at minimum as it does not appear to not be very popular and
probably isn't very good (and I suspect sounds very little like Martin
Denny). Yet, I am operating in the dark here.
Here's to honesty in labelling!

Speaking of great exotica Indian music, I stumbled across 3 extracts
from an 1978 Indian film called "Shalimar" by Anand Bakshi on that
very incredible but very expensive Karminsky project "Further In-
Flight Entertainment". Credited to Usha Uthap, they're the best
pieces on an already outstanding compilation! Anyone ever seen a
recording of this soundtrack or even a copy of the film? A lot of
Indian film music tends to be cassette only but I'm not fussy.
Any help appreciated!

I seem to recall an interview with Denny in which he said he
supervised the preparation of the "Exotic Moog" album but did not
otherwise perform. I think it was in Cool and Strange Music
Magazine, though I can't lay my hands on the issue at the moment.
Some have speculated that it's Bob Florence ghosting for Denny on the
later Liberty albums. Florence arranged numerous albums on the
Liberty label at the time (including the famous "Exotica Suite" and
Martin Denny's "Latin Village") and was featured with his big band on
"Here and Now" (Liberty LST-7380). He's still around--somebody ought
to ask him about this!

This record was "ghosted." Although Martin Denny did arrange it, he let
someone who was more experienced on the moog do the actual playing.
As a personal aside, his record has indeed a far greater status among
collectors than it should. I guess because it was an early moog record which
due to it not doing all that well originally it is somewhat scarce. But it is
its scarity rather than its content that have made it a "prize."

"Out Of Sight" is a pretty decent movie and worth seeing. It actually recently
came out on video, but it was re-released to theatres recently "for Academy
consideration."
I couldn't help while watching it, though, thinking that Clooney is really

After the "A Taste Of Honey" album is when the ghosting started to occur. And
it really is during thatis period that the quality of these albums suffers,
especially in the arranging, due to the ghosted nature. Martin Denny feels
very uneasy about these albums as many were released without his control by
Liberty who demanded that several albums be released a year while still
requiring that Denny tour incessantly. As you can't be in two places at once,
hence the ghosting occurs.
The real exotica arrangements and the primo Denny material are really within
his first 14 albums. That's where you'll hear superb exotic arrangements with
his seminal original band. After that (the very early '60s) it only reappears
occaissonally on odd album tracks.

This did occur on "Latin Village," but Denny was indeed involved on the
"Exotica Suite" sessions. Denny, in a fairly hunorous story about these
"Exotica Suite" sessions, explained that most of these tunes were not titled
until after they were recorded. They were just know in the studio by random
number. It was some A&R guy at Liberty who then came up with suitably exotic
siounding names.

Subject: (exotica) Don Lamond and damage control
Anyone familiar with Don Lamond? I think he was a guitarist. He did one
album for Command that I know of (Offbeat Percussion, RS842SD). I think he
often worked with Al Caiola, trading lead roles or working together on
album projects, but I have little to go on.
I discovered a cut from the album on Vol. 10 of Command's sampler albums
(the Ultra Percussion series...no just kidding) and found his take on
percussion refreshingly different than the rest (offbeat, in other words).
It was the only cut on side 1 of that record I could listen to. SOMEONE
left part of the record exposed to a paint spraying operation. It
apparently was under a stack of other records which were similarly exposed,
leaving a large crescent of sprayed paint covering the first five tracks of
side 1.
Never ceases to amaze me the abuse some people give their records. I have
many records which have touches of what appears to be fingernail polish
(which I don't think can be excised without damaging the vinyl) and even
more with various food particles attached (luckilly removeable).

Well, it's late and my brain isn't fully operational but I used to play
bongos and congas in a couple of bands so here are a few
suggestions:
- Make sure the skins are smooth not rough;
- Make sure they're tunable (and capable of being tuned very tight);
- Make sure the rims aren't too sharp: you'll hurt yourself and
probably crack the drum skins if they are!
- A decent pair should be pretty hefty;
- In the UK you should expect to pay at least 100 UKP (165 USD)
for a good pair;
- Don't expect a brand new pair to sound particularly "nice". All
natural-skinned drums take months/years of playing to develop a
nice tone.
The same all goes for congas except that good congas can easily
set you back 200-300 UKP (320 - 500 USD) *each*!
I used to know the names of some of the top makes but I can't
recall any at the moment. If I do, I'll let you know.

Which begs the question just *who* did the playing? I personally
think there are some killer tracks on that album, with "Delilah"
being my favourite - I've used it as a theme tune to my occasional
radio show.

Don was (is?) a drummer. I have the Off Beat Percussion LP but
haven't listened to it in a while.
Here are some extracts from the liner notes:
"Lamond's musical foundation was established when he studied at
the famous Peabody Institute in Baltimore.
... he began a decade of gruelling but priceless polishing of his
talents with some of the major bands of the 40s - first with Sonny
Dunham's orchestra and then with Boyd Raeburn's forward-looking
experimental band and finally as a member of Woody Herman's
fabulous bands between 1945 and 1949."
The arrangements are credited to Lew Davies but the notes say
Don "developed" them with Lew. Most of Don's playing on the
album is with brushes. All the usual Command alumni are backing
him up.

I *really* dig that bossa nova track, myself.
I think I've mentioned this before, but my
introduction to that album was via an 8-track
scored in Nebraska. The 8-track bleeds a little
bit, and the songs blend in and out of one another
like pastels, for a very psychedelic effect.
I think I like the 8-track better than the album
itself.

Anyone take a listen? Looks more "hollywood" than "exotic" (Sumac excepted). Thoughts?

I have the Shalimar soundtrack and those are probably the best cuts. I
think this was the first real cross-over Hindi film involving Indian and
American actors/writers, etc. A big hit at the time.
You might find it at Raag in L.A. http://www.webcom.com/raag/
