I can confirm this. While our radio station's music director claimed the
Leopard Skin sampler for himself, the Program Director (me) got the
individual CDs, Promo 1 and Promo 2 in their little cardboard sleeves. The
first one was in a white sleeve and the CD "top" was black with a olive
shape/color offsetting the hole. The second one was in a black sleeve and
the CD "top" was white with the olive.
Both CDs had, in small print across the "top" these words: "Welcome to the
Ultra-Lounge." The front cover had the ultra lounge logo and the back had
the track listings with a small version of the logo. Unfortunately,
because of the textured white paper they used in Promo 1, the track
listings were difficult to read. Promo 2 was less artsy, but at least you
could read everything that was printed.
I still have the cardboard sleeves somewhere, but decided to stick the CDs
in a slim 2-CD case and photocopy the covers...and that is what I use quite
a bit.
Wish Capitol at least went on to another sampler past the one one it issued
for 13+...that way I could put it and the Music Hound CD together.
I have often thought it funny, though, that Capitol would issue samplers of
samplers...which is really what the Ultra Lounge series is and not a
product in of itself. I know some may disagree with me, however I had
always hoped the cool packaging would help interest people in clamoring for
the originals on CD and would create a market that Capitol would respond
to. I do believe the clamoring began, but it may not have been large
enough to get Capitol to really act upon it.
I suppose once Capitol officially calls an end to the series (as it appears
has happened), it will issue a Sampler of the Samplers to the series of
samplers.

Subject: (exotica) Celebs at their Worst -- Recommendation with Reservations
Overall, "Celebrities At Their Worst Vol. 2" is less satisfying
than the first volume, which isn't surprising since it's obvious
that the compilers are getting to the bottom of the barrel of
available audio verite material. One of the discs in this new
2-CD set consists entirely of excerpts from those Friars Club
"roast" records, which are amusing in spots, but were scripted
affairs intended to be "outrageous," and therefore lack the fire
of the impromptu freakouts by Orson Welles, Jack Palance, et
al.
This set also includes a prank phone call attributed to Sammy
Petrillo, which is in reality a guy named Harold Flender (a TV
and screen writer). It's taken from an LP of phone calls by Flender
that's pretty funny in its own right, but again doesn't quite
fit in with the concept "celebrities at their worst."
Still, for those interested in the sludge behind Hollywood's
plastic facade, it's worthwhile. I got mine from Aquarius Records
in San Francisco (http://aquarius.bianca.com), and they're charging
$15.98 plus shipping, which isn't bad for a two-disc set.

Subject: (exotica) My new theme song
I don't have any actual use for a theme song. I'm not a DJ and my Vegas
act is still not perfected. But if I had a use for a theme song I think
I've found it.
On a K-tel Sammy Davis Jr. record.
How did I ignore Sammy all this time?
The first clue to the sublime nature of Sammy was a record called "Song and
Dance Man" on which he does all these TV theme songs, including not only
Baretta, Chico and the Man (an obvious choice for Sammy) and "We'll make it
this time", the Kojak theme, but also does the only version of the theme
for Hawaii Five Oh that I've ever heard with lyrics. It's called "You can
count on me". If you sing the tune to yourself, it's pretty easy to figure
out how the lyrics fit in.
The next Sammy clues were the two songs he sings on the Salt and Pepper
soundtrack, especially the rockin "I like the way you dance".
But this Ktel record is a treasure trove. There's "Spinning Wheel" and
"You've made me so very happy" in which Sammy made a very good case for
replacing David Clayton Thomas in B,S and Tears.
And then there's my new theme song.
"I'm over 25 but you can trust me".
Once upon a time, I heard the song of the flowers too, kids. I once fought
for the same things you're fighting for. And if here or there, I copped
out if it was only because I knew that you would pick up the fight for me.
Right arm!

It sounds like you need to run- not walk- down to your nearest record
store and get yourself a copy of Sammy Davis Jr. NOW. Not only does NOW
contain a large foldout poster of Sammy but it also contains the
undeniably classic "I am over 25 but you an trust me" as well as the theme
from Shaft and MacArthur Park. With songs like that, how bad could it
possibly be? (you also might want to keep an eye open for Sammy's stirring
"Dont Blame It on the Children").
I also find The Sammy Davis Jr. All Star Spectacular to be a fascinating
oddity. This album features Sammy singin in the voices of(among others)
Bela Lugosi, Huckleberry Hound, Dean Martin and the Kingfish.
Mesmerizingly peculiar...

Subject: (exotica) Ebay Situation
Well folks, I've had my first bad situation using Ebay and pretty much what
Otto was saying is right. I'll tell you what happened and then please post
your comments or advice.
I've been an Ebay user since mid- January and have bought 3 or 4 items without
any problems. Since both the buyer and the seller has a reputation to protect
(a reputation as in comments that can be left about one's self in the form of
"feedback") I always promptly email the sellers. So far everything has gone
great.
Early this week, Monday Feb. 8th, I won a bid for a $5 map. I emailed the
seller that night. I did not get any response by Wednesday and I thought,
Okay, well maybe he has been out of town, or didn't see or get my message, so
I email a 2nd message.
I finally hear back from him on Thursday evening with an apology that his
computer system had gone down. However in his message he says he expects
feedback. It is not clear if he means he will mail the item when I leave the
feedback, or if he means he's going to leave feedback about me, then email me
about it. This feedback thing is really ridiculous because the buyer feels
coerced into leaving positive feedback in order to get the item. I was so
pissed about it, but on the otherhand, I wanted the map with no further
hassle, so I got on the computer and left some "positive" bullsh**t feedback
for him (to ad to his lengthy collection). Here's his message:
<<I am sorry for the delay in notifying you of your high bid on the above
item. We are currently running about 150-200 items on eBay and we have a
program to keep track of everything and it crashed over the weekend and we
have had to spend a great deal of time in rebuilding all the information.
Please send a copy of this email with your payment. We will email you on the
receipt of your payment, shipping of the item and when feedback is left. We
would appreciate any feedback from you.>>
So you tell me what is the buyer to do? If one ever leaves negative feedback
one risks having the same done out of spite by the other party. One really
can't be honest and since I've had this experience I can only suppose there
are others out there who want a "hassle-free" transaction and who also feel
compelled then to post B.S. feedback for the sellers just so they can get
their item. Therefore one should look upon all the feedback as suspect and
possibly insincere comments by people like myself.

buyers are "coerced", just email someone who left feedback on a seller and
ask them to be REALLY candid.
I have purchased about 25 to 30 things from eBay, most in the 30-50 dollar
range and the only thing I had problems with are a couple of cheap 78's which
the seller offered to take back and return my money.
I really don't see the reason for critism here.

Well check this out folks.
There now appears to be a way that visitors to Disneyland and WDW can "make"
their own CD's of various park music, attractions, etc. Additionally, most of
the "cuts" are not available on "outside the park" albums, CD's, etc.
Has anybody done this?

In these circumstances I would take one of two actions:
- - pull out of the deal and complain to eBay/post negative feedback, or;
- - if you really want the item you bid for, give the guy as much
praise as he wants and then once you have the item, post what
you really think about him...

Officially reissued by WEA / Reprise: The 1970 album by Ananda Shankar
(the son Of Ravi). I have been looking for this for a long time not even
knowing what it was; all I had was a credit-less cassette that somebody
had given to me. So this morning I stepped into the best record shop on
earth *) and the best record salesman on earth **) said to me: Hey, I
got this reissue new in, you might like it. - He was absolutely right!
This album might be the best fusion record of Indian sitar music, 60s
soft rock and moog electronics ever. Some of you probably know some of
the tracks, as they appeared on a few recent compilations, such as
Jumping Jack Flash. The good thing is: The fusion aspect goes beyond
playing rock evergreens with the sitar; on the B-side of the album it's
vice versa: Indian music with overdubbed rock-sounds.
I heard Ravi Shankar didn't like the record because he thought it was
too commercial. Well... not for me!
There must also a second album by Ananda 6 years later, which I haven't
found yet. Anybody out there?

i've never personally run into a situation like this, and it really
doesn't make any sense to me whatsoever- feedback can only logically be
left by either person once their part of the deal is done. here's the
way i work it: if i'm the seller, i post feedback upon receiving
payment. hopefully that is enough to encourage the buyer to post
feedback to me once they've received their item and are satisfied with
it. if i'm the buyer, however, i will only post feedback if the seller
has already posted feedback for me (unless they tell me that they only
want to do feedback once the transaction is totally completed).
remember- the seller always has the first opportunity to post feedback
(if you do it correctly- ie, there's no logical way to post feedback at
all until either part of the transaction has completed or there is some
kind of conflict which prevents the transfer from being completed).
posting feedback just because an auction has closed is totally
ludicrous!! at that point you know nothing about how the transaction
will actually turn out, thus how can you have any opinion at all?
if someone is actually coercing you to do this in specific terms, i
suggest you verify with them that that is actually what they mean, and
then post negative feedback and forget about the item.
cheers!

Lycos unveiled a new searchable database of MP3 files on the Web last week.
http://mp3.lycos.com/
The site is fully loaded, as they say in car ads:
*Seaches by artist or song title, including partial word searches ("pub"
for Public Enemy) for 500,000+ MP3 files
*MP3 player downloads
*Ripper and encoder downloads so you can create your own MP3 files
*Add-ons and plug-ins
*Other playthings computer-happy exoticats will dig
The MP3 apps and tools are for Windows machines only. Woe, Mac users,
you're outta luck. I saw nothing indicating this situation will change. Can
anyone recommend some good MP3 stuff for Apple loyalists?
Happy hunting,
Mimi

Don't go scarin' the Mac users there are players and encoders for them, too.
You can start your search at:
http://www.macamp.com/
They have a free player you can down load and as far as Mac & mp3s go, I
believe they are the best. There are also links to the rest of the Mac mp3
world.

It drove me buggy too! Here's my guess... I noticed that the message was
written using a Microsoft e-mail application, and I've been reading
recently about MS using non-standard, proprietary character codes in their
software. Which fail to render correctly in anyone else's software. That
wacky Microsoft!
I guess this would be a good moment to mention that when participating in
mailing lists, it's always a good idea to be sure that your mail program is
set to "plain text" -- no fancy stuff that'll just make trouble. And only
use characters that you can type directly. Characters accessed with control
or alt combinations may not render for someone out there.
And always wear your galoshes when you go out in the rain.

Also, bossa nova with Les Baxter and Lalo Schifrin; music for belly
dancing by Sonny Lester from "How to Belly Dance for Your Husband";
guitarist Vinnie Bell's wacked-out version of "Caravan"; jungle jazz
with Yma Sumac, Chaino and Shorty Rogers (from his soundtrack "Tarzan
the Ape Man"); and "The Man from O.R.G.A.N."!

Please don't take this as expert advice (far from it), but I'll throw in a
few words.
Wood shells are generally preferable to plastic or fiberglass, although
with *congas* fiberglass does seem to have its good points as far as
roadability and cutting tone. But it seems less used with bongos. Wood is
richer sounding (and looks nicer).
Metal rims with tuning lugs are preferable to tacked-on heads. For one, you
can tune 'em. Secondly, head replacement is a bit less daunting.
Brandwise, Latin Percussion, Matador (LP's mid-price line) and Cosmic
Percussion (LP's budget line) are safe brands. Toca and Gon Bop are also
solid brands.
As far as prices, this is just my experience, there may be better deals out
there. Anyway, if buying *new* expect $60 to $70 for good entry level
bongos. Less than that and it's likely to be toy-grade stuff. For full-size
bongos (7-inch "macho" and 8 to 9-inch "hembra") expect to slide up over
$100. And the sky's the limit from there.
Of course, buying used would save you money.
I haven't shopped congas, but you probably have to go over $200 for a new
pair with stand. Same brands would be good bets.
Some links:
Latin Percussion:
http://www.lpmusic.com/
Geared toward selling their wares of course, but contains a nice helping of
general information. Check the online magazine section for articles. The
price listings in the product showcase are full list, not street. Don't
faint. Oh no! They've introduced triple-headed bongos!
http://www.lpmusic.com/Online_Magazine/Whats_New/triple_headed_bongos.html
Is this going to get out of hand, like 7-string basses?
The Bongo Page:

Still a little thin last time I checked, but worth the trip.
Congahead.Com:

Personal site from Latin Percussion's founder, Martin Cohen. Kinda
schmoozy, but interesting. Lots of RealAudio.
