I saw Vic D. give essentially the same show, with the same patter,
about a year ago at Carnegie Hall, although that time he *was* backed by a
full orchestra. Repetition notwithstanding, I have to agree with Jason: he
has one of the most marvelous voices ever granted a popular singer. So I,
too, would urge those who love the standards to hop over.

I know we all like to brag about the great finds we come across,
however, we all seldom mention the downer days of scronging. This past
weekend was a loser. It all started after i found a great, great (yes
i'm braggin') lp of billy vaughn, "golden hits". so i naively think i'll
do some more searchin' and come up with some more gems. what a bust. the
six billy vaughns i bought each for a buck ( i don't have alot of those)
were pitiful. sappy, syrupy junk. today i took the task of trying to
find one good track on these and i am stretching it to get behind any.
quest #2
i also naively found "a" three suns christmas album, 1964 (so i
thought, how different could it be). junky!!! with a capital J.
i loved the posting that mentioned something so horrible i took the
advice and forgot it all together.
beware of the bad.
keep the faith of the good.

I have been trying for a couple of years to assemble a tiki mug
collection large enough to outfit the guest list for a backyard luau.
Until recently I have scoured the thrift shops and yard sales,
grudgingly forked over $5+ at antique stores and eyed the unobtainable
on internet auction sites. My quest was ended over this past weekend.
I went into a local Chinese restaurant to pick up dinner and saw at
the bar a diversely composed tribe of tiki mugs. The owner noted my
interest and told me he no longer used them and that they were taking
up too much space.
So - this in the event that anyone else out there has not yet checked
into their local Chinese Tiki-pound for cheap, serviceable mugs.
Time is all I have,

Subject: (exotica) UL--The Great Satan? and other FAQs
Hi all--
The perennial "Ultra-Lounge: Good or Evil?" question makes this as good a
time as any to mention the New, Reborn, Redecorated FAQ.
One function I hoped the FAQ would provide is to make note of some of these
timeless debates that periodically rise up and engulf the list. The
Ultra-Lounge thread is one of them. . . Bootlegging. . .
The FAQ attempts to briefly summarize the arguments (pro and con) that are
often heard when a particular subject comes up. You may want to glance at
the relevant entry to be sure that your post is really adding something new
to the discussion.
I want to give a huge Mambo "thank you" to all the fine folks who have put
up the FAQ on their websites in the last week or so:
Hugh Petfield answered the call first, posting the FAQ to his "Hugh's
Lounge" website at: http://www.tribute.dircon.co.uk/lounge.htm with
blinding speed.
Peter Ledebur wrangled some very nice HTML which make the FAQ a pleasure to
use, and has put it up at: http://members.aol.com/Hifibliss/faq.htm as part
of the Music for Better Living site,
http://members.aol.com/Hifibliss/mfbl.htm
Moritz R naturally gave the FAQ its most artistic interpretation, adding a
few images I think any right-thinking exotica fan will enjoy immensely, at:
http://homepages.munich.netsurf.de/Moritz.Reichelt/exofaq.html
And finally Lazlo Nibble, the one who makes this list possible, has now
added the FAQ to the new, improved list homepage,
http://www.studio-nibble.com/lists/exotica.html
If you have any comments about what's in the FAQ, or have a suggestion of
what to add, please drop me a note and I'll try to incorporate your ideas
into the next revision. I really do change what it says if somebody asks me
to, just ask Moritz!
I'm hoping to come up with a pre-fab HTML version of the FAQ soon,
incorporating a couple of new additions, which anyone who asks will be able
drop into their own website. . .
cheers,

Well, I wouldn't exactly use the term "musical talent"...however, his
version of "Honolulu Baby", while mostly spoken, is definitely something
to hear. I have it on a 45 - I didn't realise it had made it to CD -
it's not the sort of thing you would listen to on a regular basis, but
it is a worthwhile addition to an exotica music collection (basically,
if you think the idea of LaVey singing "Honolulu Baby" is intriguing,
then you want this CD!)

It's not that I forget it. It's more that I don't think about it much and
I really don't see any reason to.
Someone on this list once told me that the music business sort of proves
that capitalism isn't this evil force since if you look at all the stuff
they release, it's clear that they don't have a clue what they're doing and
they're just throwing a bunch of stuff against the wall to see what sticks.
(But he said it better than me. Maybe my bad misquoting will encourage him
to state it in his own words.)
I don't think it was a conscious thought process on my part but perhaps one
of the reasons I seek out this stuff on vinyl only - and not in CD reissues
- - is because there's something "calculated" about the CD's whereas a lot of
the LP's I cherish just seem like really interesting MIS-calculations.
I'm sure that some of my favourite records did sell well at the time and
they were as calculated as Celine and Streisand duets. In fact, I suppose
every record that ever got released was somebody's version of a
"calculated" decision. It's just that most of their calculations were
really really OFF. And I guess that's why I don't think about the second
word in "music business" that often. Most "good business decisions" in the
music business can only be identified in retrospect.
But of course they can't talk about their decisions that way. And that's
why people are constantly reminding you that show business, is show BUSINESS.
I have CD compilations of field recordings, prisoners shouting into an
archivist's tape recorder and rattling their chains. Lots of stuff comes
out where the business aspect of the decision is obscure at best.
There are small companies with archivists pouring over tapes and lovingly
releasing compilations which really aren't supposed to be huge sellers.
And then there are big companies with vaults filled with stuff that people
would like to hear but they literally can't bother going back there into
the vault because it's not going to sell huge.
When a record company representative reminds me of the word "business", I'm
not surprised. I know that they THINK that's what it's all about. I know
that if they try to think of it any other way, it would hurt. They can
tell you a thousand stories of records that completely surprised them one
way or the other; they all admit that really "no one knows anything". Then
they turn around and tell you that it's a business.
It's a business that would rather sell 25 million copies of ONE record than
25 thousand copies of a thousand different records and if they had their
way, that's what they would do.
But luckily this is music and not widgets and that's why I just glaze over
when someone tries to remind me that it's a business.

Gotta weigh-in on the Ultra-Lounge thing. It's a crying shame, and =
quite ironic to think that the UL series is a major catalyst in both =

I ate 'em up. I love 'em. They were an excellent way to get my pump =
primed. I had always been dabbling in the offbeat - and when I found the =
UL series, my head nearly exploded with GLEE! They helped me tune-in to =
the genre quickly. There are Vinyl dealers who owe a debt of gratitude =
to these releases as they fueled interest in the original vinyl, if my =
experience is any kind of example. Where else can one hear Jack Malmsten =
or Muzzy Marcelino without forking over the bux for the original vinyl. =
Even if they WERE being fully reissued, who's gonna lay-down 15 clams

This may be why I will NEVER succeed in the rekkit biz. I would think =
that the UL series would be agreat way to whet the public appetite for =

Is this a DIRECT QUOTE? If so, from where?
> You helped KILL, SCAMP.
While this may have been an unintended result of buying what was, for me =
and for most people, the best option available, Not many people have the =
industry insight to realize that this (the SCAMP situation and others) =
was going to happen. I suspect those " In the know" did not forsee this =
either, though in hindsight - given the climate at the Majors, it's not =
really suprising.
It was once again the short-sighted ass-backward industry that is =
stepping on it's own genitals. What happened to SCAMP was wrong - =
shortsighted and wrong, but I won't take the blame. And until I can find =
a better option, I will still recommend this series to anyone that asks =
me where to start enjoying instrumental pop.

In a word, No.

There is money to be made both ways most business deal in both high and low

is a little extreme. My point is just because something is not as profitable
as something else does not mean the former does not get consideration and
attention.
And the dabate goes on . . . .

I was actually referring more to the benefits of using the dollar as
currency rather than sterling. That said, I figure that if the UK
and Eire were to become part of the USA, then the French would
need visas to visit England. The paperwork would be a disincentive
for them to travel (washed or not...).

Are there any exotica opportunities in the MMO (Music Minus One)
series of records? Not sure if this series (you play the missing part
on the instrument of your choice) made it into the CD era.

If it hadn't been for UL, I never would've found Scamp (or any other lounge

Subject: Re: (exotica) Tiki Mugs
Well since you brought up the topic...
I have a story that isn't too list related but ist does involve tiki
mugs, so here goes.
I have two nephews ages 5 and 6. About two years ago I invented a
mythology for them about some vaguely defined creatures called the "Oobah
Goobahs". Their imaginations ran wild and together we elaborated on these
strange beings. I never really told them what the Oobah Goobahs looked
like and one day they were visiting and saw my carved wooden tiki figure
and excitedly identified it as an Oobah Goobah! Always being one to
encourage such imaginative minds, I gave them both a tiki mug for their
birthdays last year. These mugs were a couple of hand painted, ugly as
sin, ceramic things that I found at a church sale. They were mesmerised
and according to their mother refered to whatever they drank out of these
mugs as Oobah Goobah juice. Well kids being kids one of them eventually
broke his mug about a month ago. I even think that he's a little
frightened that he may have upset the Oobah Goobahs by doing so.
So I guess my appeal to the list is to help me find a tiki mug for him
before any irrepairable emotional damage occurs.
Any leads, or direct sales will be greatly appreciated.
Uncle Frank

Subject: (exotica) RCA and Subidiary Labels
Hey folks,
It's your favorite pain in the ass, here:)
All seriousness aside, though;^)
If YOU could have ANY RCA or RCA subsidiary label LP reissued onto CD...
WHAT WOULD IT BE ??? Believe it or not (again), I actually have some pull
with RCA and they are going to be reissuing some KILLER SHIT
I told them to reissue. I ORDERED THEM to reissue
Please e-mail me off the list, I'm only on and can only handle the digest
and even then, I have to take pepto-bismol;)
Let's see what we already know about, here, so we don't duplicate ourselves;
Leith Stevens-Exploring The Unknown (fuck yeah!)
3 Suns;
Moovin and Groovin (yes yes yes)
D.D.D Christmas (yes yes yes)
Fever and Smoke (Smoke 'em if you gottem) (yes yes yes)
Mundell Lowe and His All Stars-TV Action Jazz Vol 2
WHICH IS 10 ZILLION TIMES BETTER THAN Vol 1 (yes yes yes)
Hugo Montenegro-Moog Power
Hugo Montenegro-Others by Brothers (yes yes yes)
Hugo Montenegro Hugo In Wonderland(Maybe)
What is wrong with this picture ? What is missing, folks
Please also include the Groove and Vik Labels
No, lame-oh records on VIK. ONLY top drawer killers
NO! Not Sid Bass-From Another World.
The BEST thing about THAT rekkid, is the cover, even more so than the 1
great cut that's on the LP.
Want your stuff on CD in its entirety ?
Tell me about it, no kiddin'
