It's one of my favourites too. And it's about the only chance to hear
Roger on cd. There are 2 tracks by his orchestra on the first volume of
'Test Card Classics", but I don't know of any other cd-sources for
original recordings of his music.

I've never heard about these Britsh records. More info, anyone?

It certainly wasn't meant to dupe anyone. When this first came out -
with a different cover - in Holland on the VPRO-label (VPRO is a Dutch
broadcasting company) it was quite obvious that this weren't original
recordings by Andr=E9 Popp. =
Anyway, it is a great cd. I bought it in '94 and for me it was an
excellent introduction to the music of Andr=E9 Popp. However, it would be=
great if some more original albums by Popp would be released on cd. =

That's an ESSENTIAL reissue. Buy this record and your life will be
better!

I can back that up! I've got it and I've gotta say, Strobo is my
favorite moog tune of all time!! It has a rhythm machine
doing this skittering beat that is so remarkably Drum n' Bass, that I
still feel the genre was cribbed from it! Fantastic
tune. I've had two of them, and auctioned one off on eBay a few months
back. In fact, if you do a keyword seller search
on 'seasob', you'll likely find lots of moog and 'Incredibly Strange'
rarities I'm putting up all the time. That one is a
real scarcity, though.
Regarding the posts about Varese's 'bootleg' reissue of the Hyman LP, I
believe that album WAS bootlegged by someone else
before the legit Varese issue hit the market....thus the 2 extra tracks
vs. the legit 3, crappy packaging, etc. Speaking
of that, those two Hyman LP's would almost fit completely onto 1
CD...why just 3 extra tracks??? Not like they're saving
the others for another reissue or anything. Ahhh, well. Another Hyman
tune that escapes many is the one track he did on
"The Brass Menagerie 1973" LP, called 'Explorations for Moog'. Another
monster track.
While I'm fishing here....does ANYONE have a copy of anything by Tom
Dissevelt (The Electrosoniks, Fantasy In Orbit) that
they would be up to selling or trading??? I'm desperate. Actually, I'd
entertain ANY moog stuff people have floating
around that they would barter with...I've got a great collection, but
there are lots of gaps I'd love to bridge! Rock on,

folks
i'm doing my research about which cd writer do buy ... as i understand it:
Either you have to have enough space on a hard drive (not a removeable such
as jaz or zip as the data transfer is unstable) or if you're going to burn
direct from a cd-rom drive then the writer has to have sufficient buffer to
store data, while more is supplied from the source, to ensure a smooth and
continuous transfer rate.
I have a mac performa . Does someone on the list know what kind of spec
i'll need to ba able to write audio and data cd's, that is:
1. how much free hard disc space?
2. how much buffer in the writer?
does anyone have experience of the LaCie 12x read 4x write?

Skip has jammed with Marty and Elaine, Wrote and produced Cocktails with
Joey's fully orchestrated tribute to Les Baxter concert in LA, wrote the sheet
music for the band and played guitar in Yma Sumac's fate filled concerts over
the past few years, produced Frenchy's previous CD, played with Tipsy live,
written many articles about Lounge/Exotica, and most recently started a band
featuring thee Robert Drasnin.
That band has played around LA a bit and that relationship spawned this full

The CD is avaliable on the Varese Sarabande label. It is fantastic! It is a
good sounding CD, however it is not remastered to the great sound that Br.
Cleve mentioned, as there is some distortion on one track. Regardless, buy
it. It rules.
I only wish they would put out a special or newer addition, letting us hear
all the cue from the film that were not included on the original LP (the VS
version does not have any bonus tracks).
Best wishes,
Larry

If you're in NY, I highly recommend a trip to the Museum of Radio &
Television on W. 52nd St. They're showing a program of Woody Allen's TV
appearances from the 60s. There are a few stand-up monologues, but the
real gem is Woody hosting a Kraft Music Hall variety special titled
"Woody Allen Looks at 1967". Hoooo boy! Highlights: Aretha Franklin
performing "Respect" surrounded by wildly gyrating dancers dressed in
tight white go-go clothes; Woody and Liza Minnelli doing a spoof of
Bonnie & Clyde; Liza dressed in beatnik black singing a medley of
"Feelin' Groovy" and "Up-Up and Away" in show tune/bossa arrangements;
Woody and William F. Buckley Jr. commenting on the political year that
was and taking questions from the audience ("Mr. Allen, do you think
Israel will return the land they took from the Arabs?" "No, they'll sell
it to them.")
The program runs until Feb. 18. From Feb. 19 to March 21 they'll show a
different one, including The Woody Allen Special from 1969 (with guests
The Fifth Dimension and Billy Graham!)

The Dusty version on this LP is different from the single, or the version
released on the Dusty LP. This is the one with the Bacharach arragement,
which has a beautiful trumpet ending on it. A must have for Dusty collectors,
but the rest of the CD rules! Personally, I don't care for Herb Alpert, or
the title song, so if you are like me in this regard -- don't let that stop
you from buying this great CD. I always skip past the Herb tune, and start
playing the CD with track #2.

So, I've been geeking out into exotica of late. My fave so far is Denny's
version of Voodoo Dreams (from Hypnotique). Love the drums and percussion
along with all the chants.
Question: The Scamp reissues I don't have are AfroDesia and the
Primitiva/Forbidden Island. Is either of these preferred for this type of
exotic-music (percussion, chants, etc.)? I'm probably going to get both of
them eventually, but want the better one first.
IF there are other artists in this vein, please let me know. Some of the other
exotica (Lyman, Denny's Quiet Village, etc.) seems a bit more mellower (which
is fine), but I prefer the drums and chants.
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Does anyone have information about exotica/lounge/easy listening related
cinema shows in New York City? I have the info on the Secret Cinema
(www.voicenet.com/~jschwart/index.htm). I'm interested in stuff like
Flick6ix which was formerly at Life or Pseudo-Mystical Cinema, formerly at
Baby Jupiter. Have they moved? Transformed? Disappeared? An related
info is welcome!
Thanks,
Peter

Subject: (exotica) Fans of Denny's Voodoo Dreams
Thanks,
Kevin Crossman

I expect you already have these, but how about Poison Ivy's version on
"Shots in the Dark" or "Peter Gunn Twist" performed by The Jesters on "Las
Vegas Grind"?
The other versions I can think of at the moment are the ones by Quincy
Jones on "Crime Jazz - Music in the First Degree", and Andy Nevison & his
Rhythm Masters' "Indiano" (that's what they call the tune) which is
contained on the Prae-Kraut Pandemonium compilation.
And then there is the Hillbilly Soul Surfers "Peter Gunn's Hideaway"
[Secret Agent Sounds], and the "Peter Gunn Suite" by Ray Anthony [The Crime
Scene].

Hello,
A little something for you...
THE BILLY NAYER SHOW PLAYS BROWNIES IN
NEW YORK ON THURSDAY, JANUARY 21ST, 9 PM
The Billy Nayer Show celebrates the long awaited release of their new CD,
The Villain That Love Built with their first show in New York City in over
2 years. The band and album feature founding members Cory McAbee and Bobby
Lurie. Recorded in New York and San Francisco during the past 2 years, the
album is on Billy Nayer's own label, BSG Records. It is no simple task to
sum up The Villain That Love Built. The record departs from earlier Billy
Nayer releases, presenting not mere songs but dark and fascinating
narratives. The record also includes a track from the forthcoming BNS film,
"The American Astronaut," which was part of this year's Sundance Film
Festival Screenwriter's Workshop. The live band has been leaving west coast
crowds absolutely stunned and mesmerized... SEE THE REAL ALTERNATIVE... SET
TIME IS 9:00 PM...
"Strange and popular ... frightening yet endearing."
The New Yorker
"Billy Nayer has acquired an insistent cult reputation."
The Village Voice
"Billy Nayer is an icon of an alternative universe."
The San Francisco Bay Guardian
"A live set by [The Billy Nayer Show] is a much more theatrical and
disturbing event than it sounds on paper. Lead singer and songwriter Cory
McAbee commands the stage, with a voice somewhere between suave assurance
and cracked desperation."
New York Magazine
"I don't know what the fuck to call it. Just go see them."

it will be far cheaper to buy a new video player; today's
european models (even low-cost) can play back NTSC tapes
on a PAL TV.

This is why some people (me fr'example) get kind of cranky regarding the
"Ultra Lounge" series. Capitol ground out that endless series of cutesy
comps and not even one straight-up album reissue from the Baxter catalog.
On a more pleasant note, I've been (slowly) reading John Szwed's fine Sun
Ra biography, "Space Is The Place". And it seems that Sun Ra was -- well,
"fan" would probably be too strong a word, an "interested listener" then --
to Baxter, Denny, David Rose. He even did a cover of "Possession" (actually
a Harry Revel composition?) from the "Perfume Set To Music" theremin album
on "Jazz By Sun Ra" (1957).

Subject: (exotica) VHS Question - thanks
Thank you to all who responded to my query about acquiring
a combo TV/video NTSC unit.
Several European readers kindly pointed out to me that it is
possible to buy a European videorecorder which will play
back NTSC tapes. I had thought those were very expensive
but it seems that the facility is available on machines at
$250, so that may be the answer.
I haven't ruled out getting a combo unit: were I to get an NTSC
videocamera, I'd need the combo to view and edit videotape.
Life would be so much simpler if the UK joined the USA instead
of Europe......
Hugh.

I tried this out. Pretty slick, although I was stymied more than once by
Fantasy's insistance than no tracks from other labels be combined with theirs.
Once I get my first CD, I will see if I can find enough Fantasy cuts for a
"full platter."
Has anyone else tried this out? Is anyone else doing this? This is a
great alternative to doing it yourself...but only if there are enough good
recordings available. I found myself struggling to fill mine, basically
because of the Fantasy problem but also because of the lack of material and
the absence of an "exotica" or "lounge" category.
