My first post to the group; I've enjoyed all the writing so far. Thanks
to all for the knowledge and fun being shared!

I have enjoyed "exotica" since WAY before it was exotica... my Mom used
to play all this stuff to death when I was a kid. I'm not a kid anymore
<laffing>. Guess ol' Mom was pretty hip...

Anyways, just picked up a nice reissue on Verve - an album from
"Brazil's No. 1 Organist," Walter Wanderly called "Rain Forest."
EXCELLENT album, featuring some good session players... 12 tracks,
including a nifty "Girl From Ipanema." ANother one Mom played when I was
a kid...

rereleased.
Seems like there'd be more interest in this than some of the Lost
Episode stuff
Dionysus reissued.

Last I heard, it was much like the Nelson Riddle stuff... lost in legal
entanglements with Capitol Records. Thought some of these might be
released when I found the Baxter double disc anthology, but no joy thus
far...

random screwing around, while the second feels like someone finally "got it",

A little easier to find is a later, un-numbered version from the same folks,
masquerading as a Romanian pressing on "Gongo Music" (GM-003).  It drops a
couple of tracks and adds the blimp theme; someone has one up on eBay at the
moment but it's at $31 already with four days to go. :-)

Some very nice publicity photos from the film used in both of these.  I'd
never seen several of them.

i forgot about the Lost Episode (TV show), Baxter's Best and Moog Rock.  Those
are all CD's.  Moog Rock is the boot of the group and it is not rock at all -
it's classical.

And THE PRIMITIVE AND THE PASSIONATE!!!  No CD...on Reprise, probably why it
is excluded from the Capitol two-fer.  Too bad, it is a great LP.

You would DIE for the video of Baxter's sixties show that I lucked into.  Same
show that the Lost Episode comes from.  To actually see him at his piano and
masterfully conducting his chorus and orchestra.  Fantastic!  Bird calls
demonstrated by Beverly Ford and a little comedy bit as Baxter takes on Larry
Bunker on the bongos.  Bunker wins, but Baxter can PLAY!

i'm putting together music to accompany a live dating game show and was
wondering what was (and is it available) the actual dating game theme song?

the closest i can think of (from memory) was herb alpert's spanish flea.
but i know they didn't use that for the theme song.

meanwhile i'm having a ball culling together game show stuff and cheezy
romance/sex music.  any suggestions are welcome.  suprisingly, i've got
more than enough stuff to choose from.

maybe i should adress this privately to basta,
but i figure maybe there's others out there who might be or potentially be
in my shoes on this...

i bought a copy of this "la musique qui fait popp" andre popp cd, thinking
it was a compilation of previous recordings by andre popp.  after all it
says on the cover "highlights from the works of andre popp 1952-62".  i
even had a chance to look thru the notes before buying it, although i did
not read them all at the store of course.  i just assumed (dumb) that since
there were pictures of his previous albums and that there were track
listings citing which albums they originally appeared on... that this
indeed was a compilation.  i mean, was i being so foolish?  then when i get
home and listen to it, it sounds good and fine, but the producction value
just screamed "90's" to me.  or 80's.  so after much scrutiny i FINALLY
figured out that the track listings said "originally appeared on such n
such album" not RECORDED on... and that the ensemble that was actually
performing all the tracks on my purchased cd was not andre popp's ensemble
but the metropole orchestra.  i guess i failed to notice this name on the
cover of the cd as it was in small letters in the lower right hand corner.
and on the spine.  but i never look at the spine.

anyway, i hate to bitch and moan, esp. when i'm to blame for being an
idiot.  but i'm pretty disappointed that it's not the original recordings.
again, i think they did a great job and there's a lot of great musicianship
on this cd, but i felt sort of "duped".  even though i wasn't meant to be
duped (i don't think so anyway).

i'm sure some of you could relate to my disappointment.  there's just
something about vintage production value that i just love.  sometimes
that's half the reason i like the stuff.  it's like the difference between
original tv show theme song recordings and later re-recordings by mike post
or whoever.  it's just not the same dammnit!

so, just a word of warning to those of you who didn't know.  i'm sure i'im
the only one here that didn't.

i guess i'll have to get the delirium in hi fi reissue now.

ps in case you're curious, to me, the music sounds very much in the same
vein as carl stalling's warner bros. cartoon music.  not exactly, but in
the same playful, unpredictable spirit.

Can't forget "The Soul of the Drums" also on Reprise. No CD, but equally =
as excellent. And Baxter's "Que Mango" is also on Scamp's CD. Worth havin=
g for "Tropicalia" alone.

"Clap your Hands" was recorded by a Montreal group called the
Beau-Marks and for a number of years was available on discount
Canadian comps on the "Birchmount" label...I have one called "A
taste of Birchmount Pop" that includes it (and also early stuff by
the Guess Who, etc)

Count me in for a swap for the vid or audio of it when your project is done.

There is a CD out called "Classic TV Game Show Themes" that has the original
on it.  Jim Lange, the host of the original show and now on SF Bay Area's KABL
radio still uses it to talk over.

Per the liner notes, a live house band called THE REGENTS did the theme.  They
go on to say that it did indeed sound like "Spanish Flea".

You'll find "The Newlywed Theme" on this disc, too.

I'd like to see what else you are planning to use...give us a list if ya find
the time....

The exact same thing happened to me when I bought Roger Roger's GRAND TRAVAUX.
The Metropole Orchestra was in small print on the back.

Although I was disappointed at first, I eventually went on to love the CD and
the fantastic "reconstruction" of Roger's music.

I have been wondering about that for a long time. Martin Denny and
Esquivel (the other 2 of "the great three") are represented very well on
cd, but somehow Capitol (or other companies) don't seem to have much
interest in re-releasing his work. Hopefully the planned Basta-reissues
of the Theremin-records will see the light of day later this year.

different than the sketches I have on the web, which by the way is drawn

What would a game show be like without a few classic commercials?  I
suggest "The Commercials" on Tee Vee Tons and The two British entries
"And Now A Word From Our Sponsers" Vol 1 & 2.

I also think Music For Tv Dinners on Scamp has some wonderful songs
appropriate for a game show.  You should be able to mine the Tee Vee
Toons Vols for more great  game show songs.

This is such a good idea you have and it sounds like a lot of  fun.

I wonder if someone could explain why the Casino Royale soundtrack LP
(Colgems COSO/COMO-5005) is so sought after and why it often fetches
outlandish (in my opinion) prices.  I recently bought a nice copy at a

There are a host of interesting movies available on VHS
videotape via firms like amazon.com, and probably as much
again interesting TV program stuff too.  Problem is, they
are all NTSC videos, not compatible with UK TV's or
video players.

I'm thinking of importing or perhaps bringing back from
holiday a US TV/video combo, but can anyone tell me
if this is likely to be 110 volts only?  Or is it likely to be
settable at 110v or 240v, like most computers seem to?

Double check the European players since I've been told that many of them
will in fact play an NTSC tape though unfortunately people in North America
have to buy a multi-standard machine.  In any case, you're probably better
off buying one in Europe where at least you'll have someplace to take it

More and more British VCRs read NTSC tapes. I send video tapes to friends
in London often enough and they read them with no problem whatsoever.
They're not rolling in money so I don't think that VCR was expensive. I'd
recommend looking for one in England rather than in the US. The voltage
(?) isn't compatible anyway and it'll be a problem.

I, on the other hand, cannot find a tri-standard VCR that will play NTSC
+ Pal + Secam (the French format) on an American TV. The cheapest I found
was around $1200!! Anybody has any idea on how to solve that?

Mike just came home with the latest L.A. Weekly.  In it this plain white paper
napkin (like the kind you get your drinks at a bar served to you on) falls out
and he picks it up and on it, it says in what appears to be ink pen writing:

"Table 1

Singapore Sling III
Blue Hawaiian I
Rum Runner  II
Fuzzy Navel  IIII
Sex on the Beach  IIIII"


Inside the napkin is printed "Winston Box" "16 mg. 1.1 mg. nicotine av. per
cigarette by FTC method.  No additives are in our tobacco, for tur taste."

On the back of the napkin is the surgeon general's warning in the familiar box
and in ink pen:

"Table 2

pitcher of beer  III

"100% tobacco; straightup; Winston"

Now this is the cleverest "let's cash-in on extoica" ad I've seen.   And once
again, I'd like to reiterate that I do not see any drink napkins with pictures
of swing dancers on them falling out of my L.A. Weekly.....

It's an audiophile dream. I've heard this album over a 25K stereo system,
and it is truly amazing. The biggest fuss is over "The Look Of Love" - - it
sounds like Dusty Springfield is whispering in your ear.

There was an article about the record in Absolute Sound a few years back,
with interviews with Bacharach and engineer Phil Ramone. Ramone said they
used a type of tape to do the tracking on that he had never seen before or
since - - it was red. He found he was getting unsatisfactory results from
normal recording levels, so he kept pushing the volume. The higher
recording levels produced a type of analog tape saturation that resulted in
an extremely warm sound. Both he and Bacharach concurred that it was one of
the best sounding playbacks they ever had.

If I recall correctly, audiophile recording collectors seek the 3S/5S
pressing of the album (these numbers are in the runoff grooves and indicate
what mastering stamp was used for each side. Living Stereo/Living Presence
collectors bandy these numbers about constantly..........just pick up a
copy of Absolute Sound and check out their classic record reviews. Often
they debate the sound quality of the different pressings in articles and in
the mail collumns. The S indicates Stereo, of course, and the numeral
before it indicates the stamper).

Mono copies of Casino Royale are virtually worthless in the collectors
market. I bet your $10 copy was the COMO-5005, which is the mono copy.
Soundtracks were always pressed in smaller runs than most pop albums,
unless it was a big hit like 'West Side Story' or 'A Man & A Woman' or the
Bond tracks. Law of supply and demand keep prices fairly high on most
soundtrack records. The Colgems label was a boutique label of parent RCA.
Stereo copies of this album are not rare, but they are limited.

Is this album overpriced? Unless you have a high end stereo system in your
house, you won't really hear the difference. You need big ol' tube
amplifiers, 6' high speakers, seperate crossovers, and a $1500 cartridge to
really hear what all the fuss is about. The CD version will be fine for
most mortals. The mono version of the LP stinks, soundwise. Personally, I
don't have all that audio gear in my own house (currently, anyway), but I'm
sure glad I got a chance to hear the album under the best circumstances,
cuz its fucking amazing. Of course, if you can afford all that audiophile
gear, you can afford a hundred dollar record, too.

Well, I couldn't believe it, but there it was - An ad in the L.A. Weekly for a
gig at Trader Vic's here in Beverly Hills.  I have often thought, wouldn't it
be awesome if Trader Vics turned into a nightclub and we could have acts there
like The Blue Hawaiians, Combustible Edison, etc.?  Well, this 1/2 page ad
says:

"The Beverly Hilton/Trader Vics... Celebrate The One Year Anniversary of Merv
Griffin's Coconut Club... Dance to the Music of:  Frank Sinatra Jr. and His
20-piece Orchestra.... at the hottest night club in America.... Friday,
January 15, 1999 and Saturday, Jauary 16, 1999 7:30pm - 2AM.... for
reservations call: [phone]"

Well, as it turns out it is too late to go tonight and I have plans for
tomorrow so that leaves me out.  If any L.A. based list members/exoticats do
attend this show, please post your experience to the list (or email me and I
will forward it to the list) and let us all know what is up with Trader Vics.
Should we expect more acts to be booked at "the hottest night club in
America?"

And if so, will they be adding onion rings to the menu any time soon?

Tony Martin (the singer who's married to Cyd Charisse) is going to be
performing at Cal State Northridge, Performing Arts Center, 18111 Nordhoff St;
Sunday January 17, 3 pm [phone].  Says here that he used to pack them
in at the Coconut Grove (old L.A. famed nightclub attached to the Ambassador
Hotel where Robert Kennedy was assasinated).

Joe Williams "one of the last of the big-band singers is still swinging at 81"
- - he's going to be at Caltech (university) in the Beckman Auditorium on Jan
16th, 8pm; call 888-2CALTECH or [phone].

Williams will also perform with George Shearing (the guy with those great
album covers) at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, 12700 Center
Court Dr; Saturday January 23, 8pm [phone] or [phone].

Lastly, Vic Damone will be at Cerritos Center  (see above) on January 16, 8pm.
