I just ran across some music in my collection I thought you'd be interested
in:
Go Chango Les Baxter
This is an ideal blending of exoticism with crime jazz. I am not sure what
the intent of the music was or even where it came from (I found it on the
2-CD Capitol set), but it sounds sort of like "Hawaiian Crime Jazz."
Kanaka Pete Jack de Mello
This is an unusual big band tune by Kui Lee, voiced by Limu (Marjorie
Espiritu). It is sort of a "Polynesian mafia" story read to music. It was
the only really interesting cut on an album I found in SF's Valencia Street
Salvation Army on a Hawaiian label called "Music of Polynesia, Incorporated."
A Felicidad Johnny Keating Orchestra
This was the only really interesting cut on a WB album also found at that
thrift store in SF. It was marked with a "Samba Marcia" rhythm. I was
hoping that the tunes marked "Espresso Bossa" and "Beat Bayonne" would also
be as equally exotic. The whole of this album, however, is good for that
mod "In-Crowd" sound some people like.
Street Dance Kenyon Hopkins
While this has its mandolins and comes from the Italy album from that great
Verve Sound Tour series, there is something quite catching in this tune
that probably isn't Italian. If it is Italian, though, it's got me
thinking about
packing my bags right now!
- ---
I'm thinking ahead to New Year's Eve. For me the ideal New Year's eve bash
would be headlined by Louis Prima. Well, I can dream about it anyway.

Apologies if this isn't totally exotica, but a long time ago I read an
article in a music paper which implied that some record by an outfit
called Blue Oyster Cult could actually harm your nervous system
as the beat was deliberately out of sync with the human body's
sound reception system in the ears/brain.
Unfortunately I never got to finish reading the article, or to know
what the record was. I only vaguely know that B.O.C. are American,
but not much else. Can some luminary fill in the gaps here please,
so I can stop worrying about this?
Many thanks,
Hugh.

Hmmm, this sounds familiar. I remember some news report years ago about
"Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones having an anapestic (?) beat that was
in direct conflict with the beat of the human heart. Since this report
came out at roughly the same time as the "backward masking" hysteria, I
wrote it off as another lame attempt from the "rock is the Devil's music"
minions.

I remember reading an article by a "scientist'' who reported of a beat in
certain records that was the opposite of a beating heart such as in
"Rhinestone Cowboy" by Glen Campbell....the beat that was a 'good beat' was
found in Strauss waltzes. There were experiments performed to see which music
would increase or decrease the amount of weight that could be weight lifted
and
waltzes helped optimize the amount of weight being lifted and this other beat
decreased it...

highlights from december's new arrivals...
THE FUNNY FACE GANG - Goofy Grape Sings!
What a find! Remember Funny Face? Just like Kool-Aid - a powdery, sugary
kids drink from the late 60's. This little EP has all seven characters
(fruits) singing a song. Beautiful, bursting with color picture sleeve and
words on the inner sleeve that allow the listener to sing along with the gang.
Who can name the other six characters?
DISNEYLAND STUDIOS - The Enchanted Tiki Room
After a long search for this popular collectible, the hunt is over. The thing
is, I got a little carried away and ended up scoring two copies from two
different sources with 24 hours of each other. So one (it's in the mail) will
be going up for sale or trade when I get it. Lemme know if you are
interested.
LANGDON, VERNE - The Phantom Of The Organ
On Electric Lemon Records. This is new to me, dated around 1973. A painting
of the Phantom Of The Opera on the cover looking right at you and playing his
organ. Straight ahead, creepy, no frills horror music. No spoken word and no
sound effects, unfortunately. Erik Lives.
PAGE, BILL - Sounds Of The Sonic Sixties
Through some small miracle, I happened to glance in the direction in which
this record was displayed. I had just about given up on finding it. Along
with his "ampliphonic" orchestra, the former Lawrence Welk band member and
woodwind virtuoso puts together an LP with some truly incredible tracks.
Enjoy Nature Boy, Somethin' Stupid, Penny Lane and many others in an exciting
new way...
DISNEYLAND STUDIOS - The Haunted Mansion
Excellent trip through a haunted house, this time including lots of sound
effects and wonderfully scary voices from the ghosts. Same narrator as Jungle
Cruise (B Side to the Tiki Room) Thurl Ravenscroft and the voice of Ronny
Howard as Mike.
NELSON RIDDLE - What A Way to Go!
OST to wonderful movie with Shirley Maclaine and boyfriends Robert Mitchum,
Paul Newman, Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Bob Cummings and Dick Van Dyke.
ROGER ROGER - Folies Bergere
Selections from the film, dated 1958. At long last, my first Roger Roger.
TONY HATCH - The Downtown Sound Of Tony Hatch
Anybody want this? It's free.
GEORGE ATKINS (Producer) - Sing Along With JFK
You may be familiar with the "Ask Not Waltz", which appears on a CD of silly
celebrity music...the title escapes me. Portions of Kennedy's speeches are
clipped and mixed into a song with a sing-along chorus. The same is done with
LBJ and Nixon...hilarious! Unfortunately, condition is a VG....

the soundtrack to BURKE'S LAW! What's lacking from this fine specimen is
info about who is the composer! It says, I believe by culling from memory,
that there is info on the arranger...but if the writer has done mo' stuff,
I WANNA KNOW!
Also, last night I gave the more-stylish-than-thou DANGER DIABOLIK another

Herschel Burke Gilbert, who was Music Supervisor for Four Star Productions,
composed the theme and the major cues. His best known TV work was scoring
the western series "The Rifleman" in the early '60's. He was an Oscar =A9
nominated composer who did scores to "The Moon Is Blue" and "Carmen Jones"
in the 1950's. Gilbert's Four Star associate Joseph Mullendore also
composed music for Burkes Law; he is best known for his crime jazz scores
to "Racket Squad" and the faboo "Honey West", whom Jane resembles in many
ways, right down to having a pet ocelot (soundtrack released on
ABC-Paramount in '65....best of luck finding it!). The Burkes Law
soundtrack may also contain music by 2 other Four Star composers, Jerry
Goldsmith and Skip Martin.

Hi! Ol' Jane Fondle here, getting ready to do some house-cleaning and get
rid of stuff to accomodate the multitudes of new rekkids en mi casa. We
have some promo-kind of records (stuff I doubt is of interest to these

quite sure we could unload. I just did a search for on-line price-guides,

What are the goodins' out there?

Subject: (exotica) A Twangful Christmas
Well this christmas, the halls--er, hall--of Casa Mambo echoed with the
rich resonant sounds of the guitar, as I worked through a stack of Ventures
and Billy Mure LPs.
For those who may question the exotica relevance of the Ventures, actually
in their earlier days they covered a ton of exotica standards: Caravan,
Moon of Manakoora, Perfida, Hawaiian War Chant, Beyond the Reef, Yellow
Bird, Cherry Pink & Apple Blossom White, Besame Mucho, Dark Eyes--even
Movin' and Groovin'. I only have the LP with "Caravan," but I really want
to track down some of those other ones. . . any recommendations?
After my haul from Toledo, I now have five Billy Mure LPs. . .
_Supersonic Guitars in Hi-Fi_ (RCA 1957) Speaking of great versions of
"Caravan," Billy tears into it here with an echoey rockabilly twang. But
this LP was a little confused stylistically; the midempo numbers seemed to
be going in a swing/jump direction that didn't do a lot for me. Also, it's
too bad this one was recorded too early for stereo--the sound quality
seemed cramped somehow. Gotta love that glowing radioactive guitar on the
cover, though.
_Fireworks_ (RCA 1958) Here Billy gets to show off his more rockin' side,
with some full-on stompers like "Crackerjack." But aaack! five of the
tracks are marred by dippy Conniff-esque "doo doo doo" vocals, which tend
to kill off whatever excitement Billy had managed to get going. He does get
into some other interesting styles here, with a robotically fast "Peanut
Vendor" and a Three Suns-ish "Dancing Guitars."
_Supersonics in Flight_ (RCA 1959) All RIGHT! This is Billy at the peak of
his powers, with the RCA machine working with him rather than against him.
Excellent sound, varied repertoire (including some perky "latin" numbers),
and crack sidemen--featuring that "buzzy" bass guitar sound that just slays
me.
_Supersonic Guitars_ (MGM ~1962??--I'm guessing the date on this one from
the references to Space Capsules and Cape Canaveral in the liner notes) If
you love Billy mostly for his full bore, backbeat-heavy fast numbers, this
is the one for you. He puts all the pagan savagery back into "Pagan Love
Song," and there are three or four other great ones. But it seems like a
simpler, lower-budget production than the RCA releases. . .
_Hawaiian Percussion_ (Strand, date?) This one is very different, not just
because it's mostly slide guitar rather than highspeed pickin'--the
arrangements are more open and spare and there's this. . . kooky percussion
going on. (I have no idea what some of those sounds are. . . ) It's
actually pretty fun, but definitely at the kitschier end of things. Your
problem will be finding a playable copy of this: I've been through 2 Strand
copies and one reissue of some of the same tracks on Premiere, and they all
have been on THE WORST vinyl I've ever heard. One copy had this huge
stylus-wrecking lump in the surface!
So once again we have the question, how did Billy sink from major-label
stardom to Grade Z releases pressed on melted ashtrays? Is there some
tragic story here?
cheers,
--Ross

Personally, the earlier the better as regards Ventures lps (although
Wild Things for the Arrows-esque "Fuzzy & Wild" - recently covered by
The Flat Duo Jets - is a must). In the mid-60's, the Ventures did a
few lps that took a sharp turn into the elevator. The $1,000,000
weekend is the best case in point (I believe this includes their cover
of the BCG "hit", "Music to Watch Girls By"): very loungey, non-rock.
The Ventures On Stage includes an extended version of Caravan,
showcasing the abilities of the currently late Mel Taylor. The TV
Themes lp is another must for the Secret Agent/Crime genre: songs
inspired by the Batman series (e.g.: "The Joker's Wild," later covered
by Man or Astroman; "The Green Hornet," etc.). I probably do not need
to mention The Ventures in Space, which you must obtain even if you
have to steal or kill for it.
Another 60's instrumental band not so well known for teir lounge
covers is The Astronauts. Go!Go!Go! contains a stand up version of
Quiet Village.

I like Ventures records in all periods. For me, they always had one foot
in the elevator if that's the word you want to use.
Though I remember the Ventures from when I was a kid, my impression of them
mostly comes from buying their records in the last few years so I have no
idea where they actually fit in back in the sixties.
But my impression is that fairly early on they stopped being "relevant" and
yet they just hung on. And that's what I love about them. "Herb Alpert is
selling records. We can do Herb Alpert. Now it's Psychedelia? Sure. We
can do that. We're a rock band. We can do anything."
I love them for their relentlessness and for always being kind of "off".
I only have "The Ventures in Space" on CD but I agree it's a great record.
But I also love their take on "Swamp Rock" and their "Underground Fire"
record. In fact, I think I prefer them to their earlier records where they
were more relevant.

Subject: (exotica) "Mondo Bongos" playlist for Dec 30,1998
Mondo Bongos can be heard every Wed at 9 am on CFRU 93.3 fm in Guelph,
Ontario.Canada. Comments & questions welcome.
The Barry Gray Orchestra: Captain Scarlet Theme "No Strings Attached"
- - this cd contains music from Gerry Anderson's SF puppet series
(Thunderbirds, Joe 90, Stingray). Terrific music. Consumer note: this cd is
very short (about 19 minutes).
The Tornados: Lawrence of Arabia "Intergalactic Instros"
- - this collection features 32 tracks of Joe Meek produced instrumentals.
Oranj Symphonette: Beat Girl "The Oranj Album"
- - first rate interpretations of film music. I love the version of "A Man &
A Woman" (to be played next week).
Fifty Foot Hose: Red the Sign Post "Cauldron"
The United States of America: The Garden of Earthly Delights "The United
States of America"
Catharsis: Styx "Sexopolis"
Placebo: Balek "Nitrogen: Trip Hop Sources from the Past"
- - recorded in 1973. No idea who "Placebo" was/is. Anybody have any ideas?
Funki Porcini: Poseathon "Hed Phone Sex"
Mr. Scruff: Happy Band "Chipmunk & Fish"
- - a new ep & full-length release by Scruff is due early this year from
Ninja Tune.
Embryo: New Ridin' "Surfin' "
- - sitars are featured in this jazzy tune from their 1975 lp. The band is
still going strong from what I understand.
Jan Jankeje: South Indian Line "Nitrogen: Trip Hop Sources from the Past"
- - Apart from Placebo & Mr Jankeje, this cd also features tracks by Michael
Bundt & Alberto Baldan Bembo. Plenty-o-moogs. This release is available in
either cd or vinyl format.
The Wolfgang Dauner Group: Just Bring it Out "Rischkas Soul"
- - this tune was written by Siegfried Schwab (who also plays on this lp) of
"Vampyros Lesbos" fame.
The Barry Gray Orchestra: The Mysterons Theme "No Strings Attached"
New Albanian Riots: The Web "The Cream of the Stars"
The Ventures: The Twilight Zone "The Ventures in Space"
- - a classic space/instumental lp. What I don't understand is why there is a
photo of a hot-rod on the cover.
Laika & the Cosmonauts: Psyko "Instruments of Terror"
- - a medley of the themes from "Psycho" & "Vertigo"
Man or Astro-Man?: Mystery Science Theatre 3000 Love Theme "Destroy All
Astromen!!!"
Laika & the Cosmonauts: Mission Impossible "Instruments of Terror"
Tony Rodelle Larson: Bear Rug "Swing for a Crime"
- - a seasonal tune to usher in the New Year.
Thanks for reading,
Allan

No doubt. It was the mot j. And the phase began mid-60's; things like
the Walk Don't Runs & Self-titled were rock and roll albums. While I
enjoy their "we're an easy listening band" efforts, I think they are
not as much fun as those whom they covered (Bob Crewe, T-Bones, etc).
Just an op., etc. There are exceptions: The Ventures Play The Theme
from Shaft (which has an adorable cheesecake cover and neat-o van-art
band logo). It has to be heard.

Definitely. "Would you like to learn to play kazoo with The Ventures."
An lp for every day of the week. And they are still going.
> I only have "The Ventures in Space" on CD but I agree it's a great
record.
I am in love with the modern world: and especially these cd things.
Ventures lps have been reissued 2 to a disc. And not too steeply priced.

Since I buy alot of soundtracks, I use it mostly for composer, label and year
information. The prices give me a general idea at how scarce a title is.
Now, let's look up your Burke's Law album....ahh..here it is:
*******************************************************************
BURKE'S LAW
TV Soundtrack (1964) Liberty (M) LRP-3374.....$40-50
TV Soundtrack (1964) Liberty (S) LST-7374.....$45-60
Composer: Herschel Burke Gilbert

You can then flip to the back of the book and look under the index of other
titles Gilbert has done.

The only radio hit BOC ever had was "The Reaper," a song which some claimed
encouraged suicide. This was back in the 70's, and wile I don't know for
certain, I doubt the band is still around. Given all the hoopla about the
suicide connection, I can see a rumor starting about the beat phenomenon you
mentioned.

They are still around. A friend of mine in Sacramento just saw an ad for
an upcoming concert.
I wish I could go.

After stardom, they often appeared in clubs under the name Soft Yellow

Hello, I was also a-f___ing-mazed when I viewed this flick for the first
time earlier this year and inquired on this list about soundtrack
availability. Sadly, the master tapes are apparently lost. The movie is
still in print on video, I believe, so maybe it will be reissued on DVD
someday with an isolated music score (if technically possible). In addition
to the "Arriva La Bomba" compilation, CHRISTY'S "Deep Down" also appears on
"Canto Morricone Vol. 1" on Bear Family Records (thanks, Jill Mingo, for
turning me on to that one). Both of these collections are a blast, among my
fave reissues of the past year!

Glad to hear about all this Ventures talk. I've been into them since I =
was 8 or 9. The two LPs I was turned on to happen to still be my two fave=
s - "Running Strong" and "A Decade with", both on Sunset. "A Decade with"=
has many of their brigher moments from their Psychedelic stage, lots of =
fuzz, phased Mosrite guitar without any of the tacky filler cover trax. =
Highlights include "Vampcamp" (sampled by Stetsasonic!!!!) and "Flights =
of Fantasy" (from the same titled LP). These are really stellar LPs, not =
that easy to find and HAVE NOT been reissued -as far as I've ever seen. =
I have played these for non-Venture fans who have been promptly blown awa=
y
As for my neighbours parents with their groovy record collection, they =
also turned me on to Enoch Light. They only had one LP of his too "Permis=
sive Polyphonics" - which is also my fave LP and arguably one his best! =
So I don't think my partiality to those Ventures LPs are just childhood =
nostalgia. They really rock!!!
Also, did you ever notice that "Telstar" has a riff that sounds remarkabl=
y like Blondie's "Dreaming"? I know it is a Joe Meek track, but I love =
the Ventures version and I know the Blondie boys were into the Ventures =
and the like....

There is another like this, I think it's called "Guitar Freak Out,"
dbl lp. The cover is purple & fringed with a variety of psychedelic
doodlings, including marijuana leaves (okie dokie, Nokie, we're
hippies now).

Yes. Moogwise, it kicks the crap out of Spaced Out (which I love
mostly for its artwork).

I also love that lp by the Tornados - there's a song on there that
includes a tiger's growl which regularly punctuates the wordless
chanting.

- --snip--
Nat...very well put. I need to agree with you loudly on this. I am always
amazed when I buy a new (to me) Ventures LP and it has a version of a tune
that I never would have thought they would do. I have their first album, i
think, "Walk, Don't Run" and about 15-20 others scattered through their
career, including their NASA anniversary LP pressed on clear vinyl, made
before the Challenger blew up. On every record I find a new treasure,
something just a little off kilter, but very, very familiar and enjoyable.
But no matter what, they will always be my favorite go-go-surf band. I went
crazy when A-Go-Go was re-issued, and am still upset about the poor
re-mastering job, but hey, c'est le breaks.
surfing the chaos,
