Subject: (exotica) seeking Eddie Carmel, "The Jewish Giant"
Hi, all,
looking for any recordings (it is thought that he made at least
one 78 [label unknown] and at least two 45s, possibly on the
"Radar" label) of Eddie Carmel, "the Jewish Giant." He also did voice-
overs on radio spots (Fels and Robert Hall are known to exist),
and appeared on many tv shows. The records probably do not have
his real name on them... he may have recorded under more than one
pseudonym.
There is also at least one documentary interview with him known
to exist. He had a basso profundo voice, and usually spoke quite
slowly.
This search is first and foremost for any AUDIO of him,
but any info (video/film footage, photographs [other than the famous
Diane Arbus portrait]) might help. This is for a documentary film
about him produced by a member of his family.
Thanks in advance!!

Well, one of the first Christmas songs I heard this morning was one of the
worst. I had the displeasure of hearing that annoying Charles Osgood from
CBS radio, who always does these annoying news-poems, *SING*! That's
right, this guy, who sounded like Merv Griffen on downers, put one of his
dreaded poems to music(hey, didn't MSR do that, too!?)
It was called somelike like THE FIRST TIME THE CHRISTMAS STORY WAS TOLD, or
something saccarine like that.
Coal, coal, coal, for Charles Osgood!
Love anyway,
Jane Fondle

Good question.
Well, top of the list is "Satan is Real" by the Louvin Brothers. I do have
the CD reissue so it's about the object, not the record. This is pretty
rare and I don't expect to find it and if I do it will probably be at least
fifty bucks. I kind of hope I never see a copy for sale so I won't have to
deal with the issue of expensive records.
The Soundtrack to "The Party". A lot of people are looking for this, I
know. I don't think I'd pay the forty dollars (minimum) for this one
either. But in the case of this record, I can't believe there isn't a copy
somewhere in some store where the guy just has it at eight bucks or so.
And number three? I'll say "Lonelyville" or whatever it's called, by
Kenyon Hopkins my new hero. Through the good graces of someone here on
this list, I've just traded for a couple of Kenyons. I've never heard or
seen this Lonelyville thing, only read references to it on this list. I
just like the name Lonelyville.
And if I could add one more, there's this moog record by Frank Hunter
called "White... something". "White Hunter"?? "White Slave"?? The cover
is very white and there's a very white woman on the cover. I didn't even
hear this record. I just thought it looked very cool and from the Frank
Hunter record I have, I kind of thought it might actually be good.
(And oh yeah, that Dick Hyman "Man from ORGAN" sounds pretty irresistible
too.)
There are obviously thousands of records I'm sort of looking for but most
of them I have no idea exist before I see them. With the exception of the
Louvin Brothers record which I think I first saw reference to in Incredibly
Strange Music, the rest of the records I'm looking for I either heard or
saw in a DJ's collection.
You Damn DJ's. Merry Xmas to all of you.
And to the rest of the vinyl retentives on this list, let me get
sentimental in this holiday season and thank you for giving me a forum for
my rants and ramblings these past ten months.
Nat

Especially after recently having experienced a few other lists. I

it made me appreciate the general sanity, well mannered etiquette and sly

The last time I was there they had a display which used the same apparatus
as a Theremin, but not the real thing.
One thing the Exploratorium definitely removed years ago was the strobe
lights room: a circular tent with a black-and-white interior that spun
around you as the strobe flashed. Reportedly, hippies on acid would wander
in and go into convulsions.

I have heard that this record is the best DH has to offer... Just goes to
show you what packaging can do for a record, I guess. I'd still prefer to
pay 50 cents to find out for myself, and will likely want to have one

I grab whatever I can get that features Dick Hyman playing organ. Pretty much
likewise with any TV and Movie theme studiotrack LP's.
For me, that makes an album like The Man From ORGAN highly desirable. I
finally got it not long ago after a good two or three years of waiting for it
to surface. Paid for it too, so cast none of that voodoo magic on me, please.
:)
I'd rank it right up there with the best of the numerous spy theme albums that
came out during the Bond era. Another top favorite is Ray Martin's
"Thunderball And Other Themes". Elliott Fisher's "Bang Bang Bang" is a good
one, too. Can't miss with Al Caiola's "Sounds For Spies And Private Eyes",
either. And how could I forget "Basie Meets Bond"...
I'm not real big on the Billy Strange ones, though...
happy new year !

Dick Hyman rules... sort of. Not always.
At his best, he rules.
But those six or eight great records are only the tip of the iceberg.
Below the surface of the water there's a whole heap of mediocrity.
"Provocative Piano" is okay, if you like piano trio records. But if that
was the record we were judging him for, he wouldn't rate a mention.
And I have a few of his organ records that AREN'T on Command and while
they're a couple of notches above Ken Griffin, they don't have nearly the
energy and originality of those Command records.
I can sympathize with Dick when he looks back on his career and points to
his versatility and flexibility as cornerstones of his survival.
But I've read that he doesn't particularly value those Command organ
records over any of the myriad other sessions and records he's been
involved with over his 40 or 50 year career.
And I think he's dead wrong about that.
If I only knew him for his contributions to Woody Allen soundtracks for
instance, he wouldn't rate a mention in my musical pantheon.
I don't know exactly what contribution Enoch Light made to Dick's Command
organ records - and his other organ contributions on Command records - but
if it wasn't for Enoch, I wouldn't be talking about him today.

I know that its' after Xmas, but I found a copy of "Joy of Christmas" by the
Living Guitars which is pretty cool. Lots of cheezy organ and jazzy/groovy
guitar.
