I read with much amusement Moritz's take on the Heino 60th birthday.
But talking of embarrasing, it's strange no one has brought up
another, closer to home, entertainment industry embarrasment: Liberace!
Of course I say this while listening to my newly found copy of Mrs. Miller's
greatest hits! I see a new thread potential; The most embarrasing records

Correct me if I am wrong here, but I think the line is taken out of context.
I think the gist of it is,
"Some day we MAY forget all of this, so let's celebrate our
friendships and our good fortunes right now!"

Beyond kitsch, Space Bop is one hour of full galactical wonder, and can
be heard every Sunday from 4 to 5 pm on CKUT 90.3 FM in Montreal,
Canada. Comments and questions welcome.
This week, we're taking a break, but we're back next week with...
Space Bop #28 - The Christmas Show
Sy Mann: Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer "Switched On Santa" Moog
versions of your favourite holiday songs!
Peggy Lee: I Like A Sleighride (Jingle Bells) "Hi-Fidelity Holiday"
Okay, it's a Starbucks compilation, but there are some pretty good
pieces on it, this being one of them! It's really a catchy little tune
- - almost as good as the Gap commercial's version!
The Waitresses: Christmas Wrapping "A Christmas Record" This
compilation features quite the variety of artists, including Suicide and
August Darnell, performing original material.
Blubbery Hellbellies: I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day "How Much
More Black Can It Be?" Don't ask me who these guys are - maybe Moritz
can clue us in on this one (it's an AtaTak compilation).
Blue Hawaiians: We Four Kings (Little Drummer Boy) "Hi-Fidelity
Holiday" Santa goes surfing?
Die Toten Hosen: Frohes Fest "How Much More Black Can It Be?" I'm
dreaming of a punk Christmas...
Swinging Buildings: Praying For A Cheaper Christmas "Ghosts Of
Christmas Past" Cheryl's favourite holiday compilation - too many great
songs, not enough airtime for them all...
Der Plan: Schnee-Cristel Unterm Baum "Denk Daran" Hi Moritz!
James White: Christmas With Satan "A Christmas Record" Another song
from this compilation, done as only James White can do it!
Esquivel: Jingle Bells "Hi-Fidelity Holiday" Any compilation that
includes Esquivel is worth picking up!
The Residents: Santa Dog '78 "Santa Dog 88"
Tuxedomoon: Weinachts Rap "Ghosts Of Christmas Past" These two songs
really seem similar - we're not sure why, but they seem to go together
quite well.
Combustible Edison: Sleigh Ride "Hi-Fidelity Holiday" Need I say
more?
Pyrolator: Christmas In Space "How Much More Black Can It Be?"
Pyrolator's jazz-ish take on the holiday season.
Hybrid Kids: Happy XMas (War Is Over) "Claws" Before Morgan Fisher
became a devotee of the Baghwan Shree Rajnish, he did completely
off-the-wall interpretations of songs like this! This is an entire LP
of Christmas songs, and one is stranger than the next.

Subject: (exotica) one man bands
Where do you go in your town to experience the exotic thrill of a one-man
band playing a variation on "lounge music" for a sparse audience who
doesn't seem to know he's there?
In Toronto, it seems the answer is Hungarian restaurants. If they've got
wiener schnitzel or the legendary Transylvanian wooden plate, chances are
they've also got a guy with a rhythm box, a couple of keyboards and show
business in his blood.
Tonight I went to the local wiener schnitzel palace and sure enough there
he was. I sort of knew that this place had "live music" but I guess I
assumed that if I was ever subjected to it, I would hear something more
"european" or more in the "Lady of Spain" category.
But no, he sat down, turned on the rhythm box, hit a long chord on his ARP
with his left hand and with his right hand started pecking out the tune of
"Love is a many splendoured thing" on the piano.
And five minutes later he none-too-gently seguewayed into "The Days of Wine
and Roses".
Five minutes after that he stopped. I would have applauded if anyone else
had even lifted their heads but the seven people in the room - including
the cook and the surprisingly well-endowed waitress - just continued
yammering away in what I assumed was Hungarian.
The next two tunes he played were very familiar sounding but I don't think
I actually knew what they were. Some kind of Eurovision ballads would be
my guess. The best part was when he made the ARP - or whatever kind of
electronic synthy keyboard it was - sound like a Toots Thieleman harmonica
solo for a few bars.
And if those tunes were more to the taste of the "audience" it wasn't
reflected in their reaction which never changed.
From the looks of things, I got the feeling he would have been surprised if
anyone had applauded.
The last time I experienced something like this was also at a Hungarian
restaurant. On that occasion I was with friends and we did burst into
spontaneous applause after the one-man-band-du-jour finished his
Beatles-medley which jammed at least ten songs into five minutes.
That guy that night squeezed all his keyboard sounds out of some kind of
elaborate accordion. He had lots of peddles and even managed to change the
beat of the rhythm box a few times during the medley... so that not every
tune was performed to the same beat as Ob-la-di-ob-la-da.
The accordian guy was also a lot older than the guy tonight and he had
exactly the kind of toupe you'd want a guy like that to have.
When we applauded, he was very gracious and stuck out his arm and made this
"catching motion" with his hands.
Then he said something like "I catch every one", indicating that all the
applause you send his way, he catches and pulls towards his heart.
I was convinced that night that if I had been able to record that Beatles
medley, I could have put out a pretty cool novelty record. Or maybe I
could have gotten him on a tour opening for Daniel Johnson or Jonathan
Richman or maybe even They Might be Giants.
Anyway, I just wondered if this was some kind of universal thing with
Hungarian restaurants. I guess there are guys like that at some hotels in
town but I don't go to hotel lounges.
BTW, we now have a tiki bar here, sort of. I guess I should go there
before it goes out of business.

But it's obvious that Disney can't let Disneyland become a museum. I
have no solution to this.
Somebody rich should buy the Tiki Room and open up an entire Tikiland,
also featuring the "Tahitian Terrace", Danny Balsz' "The Tikis", an
exact copy of the first "Don the Beachcomber's", "Tiki Gardens", "Trader
Vic's"-rum-booths, a Martin Denny animatronic show playing birdcall
exotica in a copy of Henry Kaiser's aluminium dome, "Bora Bora Mountain"
featuring a Show Scan surf experience inside, a "Magnum" Ferrari ride
for kids, polynesian restaurants, orchid flower shops, "Bosko" Tiki mug
shop, solarium, "Easter Island" swimming pool and instead of the
Electric Parade a sacrifice ritual is held every night ending up with a
maiden being thrown into the central volcano....
How does that sound, eh?

I finally got my Les Baxter soundtrack - Hells Belles today.
Shipped from a very friendly and reliable (rare) dealer in the US. I
haven't had a chance to play it as I had to go to work just after the
postman came. It looks new, perfect cover, bright white inner sleeve and
perfect unplayed vinyl. I've waited for this for a long time and it's
finally happened. Next is the Deep Throat soundtrack, then Mr Tibbs.......
I have also discovered an excellent way to shop for records on the net.

These two sentences sum up my feelings EXACTLY. I really appreciate all the
comments on my original report. I listen to my Enchanted Tiki Room album and
just shake my head that they have changed it. (An album that a list member so
GRACIOUSLY helped me obtain - thanks - and you know who you are!)
Now the Disneyland Room is supposedly spared the hatchet but I just wonder if
they will bring back the food court idea. The food prices at these parks are
sky high and thus so are the profits. I hope they at least move the Room if
they make "room" for the food court.
OK, a little more on my recent Tiki Room experiences. I asked an attendant at
the Room what the people were saying about the new Room and that I liked the
old one much better, he said without hesitation, "everybody tells up they like
it." A few minutes later I thougt, "Gee, that guy's answer was so quick and
without emotion." So I asked another park employee that was working near by
(but not with the Room) the same question. But this time I prefaced it with
the comment that I felt the other guy's response was "maybe rehersed - like
management told him to say that."
This worker said that the reviews were more mixed but the ones that do not
like the new Room REALLY DO NOT like the new Room. "The ones who like it are
more likely to never have seen the old one," she said. This employee even
said that one lady was very dissapointed because she remembered the Room as a
safe haven for younger children. Her 2 year old freaked when Gilbert started
yelling and the lights went totally dark for about 20 seconds (which is part
of Disneys increased emphasis on scaring you on the rides/attractions).
The employee went on to say that the lady went to "Guest Relations" and
complained. Good for her but too late obviously.
OK, let the debate continue.

The latest wrinkle in the RIAA's efforts to control digital music...
Maybe you've heard that this week they announced an industry consortium to
formulate the SDMI - Secure Digital Music Initiative (note resemblance to
SDI - Strategic Defense Initiative (remember Ronnie's Star Wars?))?
Stories here:

http://www.news.com/News/Item/0,4,29979,00.html
But here's the kicker -- the RIAA's consultant company in this scheme is
heavily involved in the intelligence, national security, "black budget" field.
Very intereshting story here:

This is so funny that you mention Haley Mills "Jeepers Creepers" .
What a bouncy bouncy song,(No reference to Bobby Vee doing "Rubber
Ball" intended)
There's a Steve Lawrence and Eddie Gorme Christmas album that was done
a long time ago that I've never heard but I know its wonderful from
hearing the song "Let it Snow". I think the Eddie album in spanish is
just too bland, too soft compared with the wild swinging productions
of her "Let it Snow" with Steve Lawrence.

Do you guys have the entire album? Fantastic! Billy May does some
arranging, Dick Hyman is on it. She really is a good singer, but I don't
always like her material/arrangers/husband(who is also a fine
singer)...mostly too shmaltzy and shmucky...And leave "Black Hole Sun" to
Soundgarten, please!
My faves are(this is like Tiger Beat!):
Keely Smith, Julie London, Nancy Wilson, Peggy Lee, June Christie, Anita
O'Day, and probably others I am leaving out.
Oh, regarding that Heino story, to EMI, "as if!"
Come on , that guy is full-on tank commander...just look at him!

Yep.....Disney and the Cirque du Soleil made a deal where Disney will provide a
permanent space for the circus...right near the Pleasure Island site.
I know that the Cirque du Soleil had a previous 'home' base in Las Vegas, but
have no idea on whether they're relocating or whether they are starting a few
different franchise locations for various versions of their touring circuses.
By the way, I saw this circus once, about three years ago, and came away very
impressed.

Check out this site... Don't know which is more fun, the parody site or the
link to the real magilla. Read-on and follow the links.
For those of you who have ever received or found a religious "Jack Chick"
cartoon booklet (if you have you will instantly recognize them) and wondered
what kind of paranoid, hateful soul could write such tripe the answere is
here!
An excerpt from the Jack Chick Parody site describing this evil religious
troll:
"The world that his tracts assemble as you read them, is one where secret
societies of Satanists hide behind every Halloween party and role-playing
game, where The Catholic Church plans the assasination of world leaders....
Conspiracy theories that would make the John Birch Society look sane by
comparison, quasi-racist charicatures of non-whites and Jews, and unlikely
scenarios are Jack T. Chick's trademarks. "
Be SURE to go to the Chick related links and visit the OFFICIAL Jack Chick
Site. It's better to go ther first. http://www.chick.com/ Click the "online
reading" linkat the left of the page. When you are done, go here:

It's in Anaheim, don't know the street, but was very surprised to encounter a freight
train driving towards us right on the street. The depot is not operated for visitors;
I was shown around by friends who worked there. It wasn't like "top security" though.
They also have construction halls there where they build, paint and repair props
for/from the magic kingdom.
