What younger audience?
That's funny, because when I was a *kid* it appealed to me, because it was
cool and had great original songs and talking birds and flowers and tikis.
Duh.
Now it's got an obnoxious parrot, who I can see any day of the week when I
pop my video in, or tune to Disney Channel.
I dunno. All I can say is, it appealed to me when I was a kid (late 70's)
and that was NOT the height of the tiki revolution.
Also, was this Disneyland or Disneyworld?
A small distinction that makes a world of difference.

Hello,
I'm Clarice, from Brazil, I just subscribed. I'm still a little confused
with all the posts... anyway, I only have one of Sergio Mendes album, is
called " The fool on the Hill". I particularly like the portuguese
speaking songs, cause is almost impossible to understand what they're
singing... "Upa Neguinho" is my favorite... There's no Sergio Mendes
records released in cd's, I think that mostly because he was not famous
around here, people thought that his music was for foreigners... but now
is easy to find, if you look for vinyl, of course. But I was curious to
know if his records have been re-issued somewhere... can anyone help me
with that?
cheers,
Clarice

Well, I saw at least one other person from this list at the Oranj Symphonette
show last night. It was great show! They're a great band, even better than
I expected they would be...all of them are super musicians who "get it" and
deliver the music with a reverance and where called for a sense of humor.
Mostly injected by Ralph Carney (assorted saxes, clarinet, flute and duck call).
For example, in their version of "After the Fox" Carney echoes the Peter
Sellers' vocal "He is me" with the duck call. And later when during a flute solo,
he spoke into the flute retardedly saying "flute solo goes here" and then alternated
between a very melodious flute solo and gibberish...but the antics were spare
and did not overshadow the music, but rather augmented the mood of the particular
piece.
Joe Gore's command of the guitar is amazing as he had something like 15 different
pedals to step on to create tones on his guitar that were other worldly. The
keyboardist alternated between a Hammond B-3 w/ a Leslie and accordian and
Matt Brubeck (one of Dave's sons), also traded electric bass for cello.
A great ensemble making tomorrow's exotica today! Don't miss 'em if they come
to your town!

Subject: (exotica) Twas the mix before xmas...
Well after MONTHS of foot-dragging, nightmarish delays of a personal nature,
and some technical problems that could only have happened to someone with
the luck of Job, I have completed the audio portion of this year's Xmas CD.
I burned my first copies last night, and it's pretty pleasing. Let's hope
the artwork is not so trying. Anybody else compiling Xmas mixes this year?
The playlist:
Hooray For Santa Claus - From the Golden Book Record
"Santa Claus Conquers the Martians."
Nutcracker Rag - John Sheridan
Parade of the Wooden Soldiers - Lenny Dee
Snowflakes - The Ventures
Christmas Boogie - The Davis Sisters
Kringle Jingle - Ken Griffin
Jingle Bells - Booker T. and the MG's
Here Comes Santa Claus - Hank Thompson
Santa Claus is Comin' - Al Hirt
Reindeer Boogie - Hank Snow
Rudolfo Nariz Roja - Hermanos Zavala
Five Pound Box of Money - Pearl Bailey
Senor Santa - Jim Reeves
Mele Kalikimaka - Arthur Lyman
Santa Looked a Lot Like Daddy - Buck Owens
Santa's Messin' with the Kid - Eddie C. Campbell
Ding Dong Dandy Christmas - the Three Suns
Sleighride - Arthur Lyman
Christmas Is - Lou Rawls
Deck the Halls - George Wright
Happy Holiday - Percy Faith
Auld Lange Syne - Lenny Dee
Day After Christmas Boogie - Harry the Hipster
Also included are bits of Lorne Greene, Louis Armstrong, Liberace, David
Seville and Babs Gonzales interpreting "Twas the Night Before Christmas."
I tried hard to stay away from culling hits from comp cd's and challenged
myself to concentrate on "found" records and original vinyl - Though the
comps still have a presence. Next year's will be FANTASTIC if I can find
some good audio-scrubbing software, as I still have not found a reasonable
means of erasing pops and clicks without compromising sound clarity short of
doing it by hand.

EMI Stops Production of Nazi Songs
By The Associated Press
Filed at 2:23 a.m. EST
COLOGNE, Germany (AP) -- International recording label EMI says it has
stopped production of a cassette by German folk singer Heino that contains
traditional marching songs the Nazis used during World War II.
The cassette, titled ``As We March Side By Side,'' was produced several
years ago but never marketed commercially because of EMI's concerns about
its content, EMI spokesman Erich Grote said Monday in Cologne.
The 60-year-old Heino, popular mostly with older Germans, has been singing
folk music since the 1960s. ``As We March Side By Side'' contains songs
popular before the Third Reich but exploited by the Nazis as propaganda
about the glories of Germany.
Heino also sings the German national anthem on the cassette, including the
original first verse that was banned after the war. It begins:
``Deutschland, Deutschland ueber alles,'' or ``Germany above all.''
The decision to stop production of the cassette followed a German TV report
that ``As We March ...'' was being offered for sale by mail order in the
extreme right-wing German National Newspaper.
``This was an unpleasant surprise,'' the EMI spokesman told The Associated
Press. ``We immediately informed our customers that we would not fill any
more orders (for the cassette), because we in no way want to support this
kind of product.''
Heino was not immediately available for comment about EMI's decision.
The newspaper, published in Munich by politician Gerhard Frey, had been
running the mail-order advertisements for about a year, the station ARD
reported.

The basic info other list members have provided is a fairly accurate primer on
Radley Metzger (minor correction, though: Camille 2000 takes place in Rome,
and the Camille character is an updated 60s swinger. The sets in that flick,
btw, are some of the most outrageously Mod ever printed on celluloid.). Rad
was an American filmmaker, started off as a distributor for Euro softcore porn
(like "I Am Curious Yellow" etc.)
His second movie, _The Alleycats_ has an opening theme that would be my number
one choice for a Combustible Edison cover. Incredible, e-z jazz swingerismo
with a burbling sci-fi effect on top. He's recently reissued most of his flix
on video again (self editing the "naughty" bits. Alleycats was so cleaned up
that it didn't even have naked breasts showing. But the kinky whipping scene
is intact, as are the lesbian kisses and the amazing collection of mid-sixties
bouffant hairdos. Radley later went into hardcore porn in the 70s, directing
the classic "Opening of Misty Beethoven" among others. Look for _Carmen
Baby_, _Score_, _Lickerish Quartet_, _The Alleycats_ and _Camille 2000_ at
your local hipster video store (like Le Video or Naked Eye in SF). There's a
Radley Metzger website linked up with Audobon films that's easy to find on the
web.

There is this little museum for slot-machines; it's right at the coast,
ocean-side, west of SF, you can get there by bus. It's incredible:
There's a barber shop quartet (puppets of course) singing, you see a
chromium horse riding, a whole animated fairground, weird things like an
execution, old films etc etc. Take enough nickels, dimes and quarters.
It's really worth a visit!

I always thought there is no Tiki Room in Disneyworld.
Speaking of Tiki:
I recieved my copy of the TIKI NEWS yesterday and it's so great! Not
only because it is an edition focused on the erotica aspect of the Tiki
culture, but it has many fine pics of artefacts I haven't seen before,
like those pieces from the "Museum of Politically Incorrect Primitive
Art", but also some nice photos of Tiki Bars and of course some nicely
and "witzig" written articles. A fundamental one about painter Leeteg of
Tahiti especially attracted my attention. For less the price of a Big
Mac you get so much more to dig in, so in case you haven't already, get
your copy of the Tiki News immediately! I think you can order it
directely from list member Otto von Stroheim, but there are also a
couple of bookstores that carry it, but only in the US.

I have Pierre Henry and Spooky Tooth's Ceremony LP.
It was bought in desperation at a record shop in an exchange frenzy and
it's strange. Not your normal Pierre and almost certainly your usual Spooky
Tooth. Psyche, grungy, non-dance-friendly and dirty. I'd need to listen to
it again for further analysis but I certainly wouldn't recommend it to
anyone on this list.

What would he say: "I vass only filling orders"?
Heino, the dark underbelly of bad taste.

Well, Keith, if you can, forward my comments to the original
poster- but this is unhappy news indeed.
I assume that they have changed the Tiki Room at Disneyland to
reflect these questionable "improvements". It shows how out of
touch Disney is with the needs of the American people. Children,
indeed, loved the old show through it's innocence, lack of
complication, and magical fantasy world elements. It was the
very absence of "big city Hollywood" that made this particular
attraction work. Magic- the element that both Walt and his
original designers understood so well without questioning, is
also the single most important element which the current
re-designers simply won't trust. Kids are too sophisticated
for that, they think. Why are they in such a god-damned hurry
to bring our kids into the real world?

For what it's worth,
The Muppets reference the Hut Sut song in a sketch on their first album. I
never knew what it was until now. It's basically like this:
Nurse Janice: Doctor, do you know what's wrong with him?
Doctor Rawlph: No, but I know "Hut Sut Rawlson".
Then he sings a bit of the chorus.
Then the patient groans.
A classic.
One more celestial mystery solved.... Ahhhh.

Just received a copy of " Playboy Playgirl", the new P-5 album. I
like it more than their last album. This time P5 seem to be
influenced by Fantastic Plastic Machine, The mixing and type of beats
on PBPG seem a direct descendent from " Electric Lady Land" & "You
Must Learn" off the FPM album "Luxury". The busy listening sound of
the new club pop scene in Japan is truly startling.
PB PG comes packed in a cool box a little larger than a paperback,
with all kinds of P5 goodies inside. The album contains less break
beats than Happy End and most of the songs are excellent, with joyous
melodies and true cutting edge Shibuya-kei production. This is a
great Japanese club pop album, sure to please the P5 fans.

One of my top ten releases for 1998 is laila france's album,
"trance cocktail airlines" Photo Records, Japan . Its also called
"Orgonon" on the Bungalow label (1997) The Japanese version has 4
tracks and made it worth getting for $18 total. Lilli la tigresse is
great and I don't know why they left it off of the orgonon release.
Plus the Japanese version has 3 remixes of the song "trance cocktail
airlines"2 of them are superlative.
Most of the music would fit quite well on the "Music to Watch Comets
By" compilation by the Gentle People or on an upbeat Gentle People
album. Produced by Momus its very much up his alley and will
definitely remind you of the Kahimi Karie ep "I am A Cat" also
produced by Momus.
When laila france says "come fly my airline" I hand her my ticket and
sit down to enjoy the ride.
Easy listening in the Big Easy
Chuck
By the way, this album is only number 9 on my top ten list.

Christmas at Ground Zero
- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- --
It's Christmas at Ground Zero
There's music in the air
The sleigh bells are ringin'
and the carolers are singin'
While the air raid sirens blare
It's Christmas at Ground Zero
The button has been pressed
The radio just let us know
That this is not a test
Everywhere the atom bombs are droppin'
It's the end of all humanity
No more time for last minute shoppin'
It's time to face your final destiny
Well, it's Christmas at Ground Zero
There's panic in the crowd
We can dodge debris while we trim the tree
Underneath a mushroom cloud
You might hear some reindeer on your rooftop
Or Jack Frost on your windowsill
But if someone's climbin' down your chimney
You better load your gun and shoot to kill
Oh, it's Christmas at Ground Zero
And if the radiation level's okay
I'll go out with you and see the all new
Mutations on New Year's Day
It's Christmas at Ground Zero
Just seconds left to go
I'll duck and cover with my yuletide lover
Underneath the mistletoe
It's Christmas at Ground Zero
Now the missles are on their way
What a crazy fluke we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday
What a crazy fluke we're gonna get nuked
On this jolly holiday

My boyfriend who is a musician with an electronics background and does audio

Whatever is the case is not my concern. My concern was that their was a
noticable difference in sound quality when recording vinyl onto SA. From now
on I'll just buy the SAX's and that way won't have this problem anymore.

I totally agree on this one - Musee Mechanique is basically this guy's
huge collection of mechanical turn-of-the-century coin operated arcade
games. It's located on the lower level of the structure housing SF's
famous Cliff House restaurant at 1090 Point Lobos.
I also highly recommend this dingy little restaurant with a huge "Doggie
Diner" plaster dog's head in front of it, across the street from the
S.F. Zoo. (Maybe you saw this in Zippy the Pinhead comic strips.) It's
called Carousel and it's at the corner of Sloate and 46th Ave.
