Yeah, I have to second that recommendation. It's
ever-so-slightly "acid easy" in flavor -- a little
sitar and day-glo is woven into the basic Brazilian
fabric. Even the cover is cool.

.___well, thanks for the reply. the moroder material i'm looking for [an
obscure b-side, sampled by dj shadow on his debut 'endtroducing' lp] is far
more exotically-inclined, it was designed decades before this, and prior to
moroder's popularity with productions for donna summer.
are there no subscribers with suggestions? is there a 'breaks/beats'

Went holiday cd shopping at my local Tower and Virgin record stores
that happen to be a few blocks from where I work and found a few
wonderful holiday releases. Only one is from 1998. I apologize but I
don't think we discussed these yet.
Topping the list:
"A Really Swell Christmas" Columbia (1996)
1. "Deck the Halls" by the Glad Singers,2. Rudolph etc by The Joe Loco
Quintet"(1955) previously unreleased,3. "happy Holidays" Percy Faith,
4. "Twas the Night Befor Christmas" Liberace, 5.Jingle Bells" Ray
Ellis,a 1957 single, 6."Blue Christmas" Frank Yankovic, 7. "Winter
Wonderland" Harmonicats, 8."Santa & the Doodle-Li-Boop"Art Carney(a
1954 single), 9."Santa C is Coming to Town" John Davidson, 10."
Santa's Laughing Song" by Santa Clause & His Helpers, 11."Christmas"
Rod McKuen, 12."he Christmas Song" George Maharis.
"Let's Sing a Song of Christmas" by Spike Jones(1998 Polygram) This
is a great cd withSpike's trumpeter George Rock and his "little boy"
voice on many of the cuts. The highlight for me is Jingle Bells sung
in pig latin. This is a zany compilation but as the album notes say
the album is done "straight" with only a modicum of glugs and whistles.
"Merry Christmas" Jackie Gleason (1995 Razor & Tie" Christmas music
to go to sleep by. Got hooked on this last year listening to it in
real audio. My two year old and I fell asleep to it the other night.
"A Classic Cartoon Christmas" (Nick at Night 1996)
Favorites from Christmas Specials, nothing too exotic. "You're A Mean
One, Mr. Grinch " is my fav.
Only the Spike cd is from 1998. Very meager pickings this year on
cd. Its obivious that when it comes to xmas exotica its best to mine
the vinyl.
Easy listening in the Big Easy

Such as the popularity of William Bennett, beanie babies and

According to the Grove Encyclopedia of Jazz, Ann Richards was a
band singer in the late '40s and '50s. She sang with Charlie
Barnet's band for a while, then hooked up with the Stan Kenton
Orchestra in '55, later marrying Kenton. Thereafter, she limited her
performances to occasional club dates. I've seen a couple of Capitol
albums she did in the late '50s, at least one with Stan. They
divorced in 1961, she died in 1982. Check out her album "It's Ann,
Man" (Atco 136) from 1961.

not an expert but a new fan this year.
i rented a trailer tape of films from Audobon Pictures
all sexy eurofilms from the 60's and 70's.
they blew my mind, incredible stuff.
The Dirty Girls, Lickerish Quartet, The Penetration of Barbara, Score,
Camille 2000, I, A Woman, etc etc, most were Radley Metzger films, who
seems to be the Russ Meyer of Europe...but a bit more clASSy!
i recently saw Score, and highly recommend it. A couple experimenting in
the Swinging scene. "Real" Swingers. The wife even gets her man to have a
homosexual encounter! Very 70's, very cheesy and extremely funny (though it
is not supposed to be, or maybe it is?)
anyway to make this music related...you asked about the soundtrack...
i am not sure but Easy Tempo from Italy, has been releasing tons of this
stuff and i have Camille 2000, which is not that groovy but i it is very
possible that it has been or will be released by them soon.
The Charles Theatre in Baltimore recently screened Score and i am trying to
persuade them to get more stuff like that as well as Russ Meyer's Beyond
the Valley of the Dolls (my all time fave)for a New Years Weekend Midnite
movie/Dj party.
i will keep you posted.

Subject: (exotica) Hut Sut Riot
Lately, a couple of friends and I have been talking about (okay, obsessing
over) "The Hut Sut Song" (which sometimes appears with the subtitle "A
Swedish Serenade"). It's one of those maddeningly infectious tunes, and it
was very popular in the 40s, no doubt in part due to its seemingly
nonsensical lyrics.
In fact it's burrowing into people's brains again right now, as an
instrumental version plays in the background of a few scenes in the movie
"A Christmas Story," which runs on one TV station or another just about
every day between Thanksgiving and Xmas.
Supposedly, some of the lyrics are in Swedish, or are at least phonetic
renderings of Swedish words, but I've not confirmed this.
We know that the song was written by the team of Leo Killion, Ted McMichael
and Jack Owens. The only other title I can find credited to these three is
something called "By-U By-O (Lou'siana Lullaby)". I've never heard this
one, but would guess it's in a similar vein, utilizing Creole dialect.
Jack Owens was a fairly prolific songwriter -- the ASCAP web site lists a
couple dozen songs from his pen including "Alice From Dallas," "The Hukilau
Song" (along with several other Hawaiian-inspired titles) and "I Dood It."
Killion and McMichael apparently shot their creative load with "Hut Sut"
and "By-U."
I have three versions of "Hut Sut" in my vinyl collection, and all three
are pretty delightful. It's on Homer & Jethro's 1963 RCA LP "Zany Songs
from the "30s," Spike Jones performs it on "60 Years of Music America Hates
Best," (Liberty LP, 1960), and it's on "The Very Merry Macs Sing Very Merry
Melodies," (Design LP, 1957).
The song was also recorded by Horace Heidt, Freddy Martin and his
Orchestra, The King Sisters, The Platters, Bing Crosby with Connee Boswell,
Mel Torme, Sammy Kaye and his Orchestra, and Nat King Cole.
The Merry Macs perform the tune in the 1941 movie "San Antonio Rose" and
Horton the elephant sings it several times in the 1942 Warner Brothers
cartoon short "Horton Hatches the Egg" (from the Dr. Seuss story, directed
by Bob Clampett).
I've found the following lyrics posted on the web at
<http://www.summer.com.br/~pfilho/html/lyrics/h/hut_sut_song.txt>, but have
not yet located an "official" sheet music version to verify the accuracy of
this transcription (although it appears to agree with the records I've
heard).
*****************************************
The Hut-Sut Song
Words and music by Leo V. Killion, Ted McMichael & Jack Owens
<verse>
In a town in Sweden by a stream so clear and cool
A boy would sit and fish and dream when he should have been in school.
Now, he couldn't read or write a word but happiness he found
In a little song he heard and here's how it would sound;
<chorus>
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit,
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit,
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.
Now the Rawlson is a Swedish town, the rillerah is a stream.
The brawla is the boy and girl,
The Hut-Sut is their dream.
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit.
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.
*****************************************
Does anybody here have other recorded versions of "The Hut Sut Song" or a
copy of the sheet music? Any idea as to whether these are actually Swedish
words? How about a recording of "By-U By-O"? Or, how about offering your
thoughts on this oddball musical earwig...
Happy Holidays,
Wayno [Faithful Reader, Irregular Poster]

In fact, it IS the name of a band, on Eighth Dimension Records out
of Orlando, FL. Eighth Dimension is the original home of DJ BMF,
Q-Burns Abstract Message, and Pimp Daddy Nash, 3 electronic beat
explorers who have since gone on to fame and fortune with other
labels such as Astralwerks and World Domination. There's a nice
double-CD compilation of their early work entitled SELECTED
MATERIAL, available on World Domination, which includes at least
one track by the Lickerish Quartet.

As far as I know, the only Metzger soundtrack currently available
is the one for "Camille 2000," a 70's film which turned the Greta
Garbo character into a Parisian junkie prostitute. That score
was done by the great Piero Umiliani ("Sweden Heaven and Hell"),
and is definitely worth checking out.
Metzger was an independant filmmaker in the 60's/70's who has
recently enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. He was married to
a woman who was responsible for distributing many of the more
titillating European art films of the era (e.g., "I Am Curious...
Yellow") and many of his films aimed for a similar audience.
They are, by and large, thoughtful films, with an erotic slant
to make them marketable, and are not really in the same league
with the sexploitation films of someone like Russ Meyer. IMHO.

This is new. It was compiled by someone at EMI for Starbucks. ComEd's
version of 'Sleigh Ride' appeared on a promo-only Xmas card CD sent out by
SubPop about 4 years ago (that CD also contained their version of
'Christmas Time is Here', the Vince Guaraldi tune from the Charlie Brown
Xmas TV special of the 70's).
The Esquivel track, which is from "Merry Christmas From The Space Age
Bachelor Pad", is actually me digitally performing 99% of the instruments,
with The Millionaire on guitar, and he and Miss Lily Banquette and I on
vocals. Esquivel reads a script I wrote at the end of the track. The folks
at BarNone somehow neglected to inform the staff at EMI as to the proper
credit. Thanks guys! My publisher informs me that this should be changed
with future pressings..........
ah, the music biz - - one screwjob after another. I feel like John Barry

getting the credit is even worse.

Well, if it's anything near as painful as listening to her duet with
Barbra Streisand, it doesn't bode well for the future of our
civilization. It's like listening to the two of them having a contest

D'oh! I don't know what I was thinking, but it wasn't Umiliani
at all; it was Piero Piccioni who did the score. I'm not that
familiar with Piccioni's other work, but I know he scored at
least one film by Lina Wertmuller. Sorry about the confusion.

I was trying to joke. To know disco - or Moroder - in my opinion you have to be
kind of old and not young as you suggested in your post. disco, that's the time
before Punk, Rap, New Wave, decades ago. However....
I hope you have taken a look into that fabulous Moroder-cover-page meanwhile.
There is also a link to another page with a complete or almost complete
discography and you can hardly believe your eyes how much it is...
.As recommendations there are so many, let's just stay with Moroder's early
solo-works:
"Einzelgaenger", I recommended this already...
"E=mc2"
"From here to Eternity"
Besides the early Donna Summer records there are some really interesting pieces
with Sigue Sigue Sputnik, esp. the "Bangkok-Remix"-maxi of Love Missile. It's
like a demonstration of 80s sound effects equipment. (I recommended it earlier
already) But I also like his Pop-oriented things like "Son of my Father" or
"Looky looky" or "Moody Trudy". There was always a moog. Back then he called
himself just Giorgio. There's a 1991-reissue-compilation called "Early Hits"
and they are:
1.Arizona Man (1970) 5.15
2.Son of My Father (1971) 3.42
3.Sally Don't You Cry (1970) 2.45
4.That's How I See Her (1970) 3.13
5.Pauline (1972) 2.54
6.Looky, Looky (1969) 2.39
7.Stop (1966) 3.30
8.Make Me Your Baby (1968) 2.25
9.Automation (1972) 4.12
10.London Traffic (1972) 3.49
11.Underdog (1971) 3.53
12.How Much Longer Must I Wait? (1966) 2.28
13.Moody Trudy (1969) 2.56
14.Happy Birthday (1969) 2.13
15.Lord (Release Me) (1972) 3.41
16.Bla, Bla Diddly (1966) 2.35
(Hansa/BMG, 719-261991) Ariola, I think....
These are only the highlights of his solo-works, which themselves are only an
itsy-bitsy part of the whole that he did.
He was also behind "Chickory Tip", who had a worldwide success with "Son of my
Father".
I haven't been able to get any of the "Munich Machine" records so far, but I
expect that they are super. They have incredible covers. All far ahead of their
time. I think it owes exclusively to Moroder that there is a term like "The
Sound of Munich" or "Munich-disco" at all. Quite a lot of international acts
related to that later, like Jeff Lynne of ELO or M, the band that brought us
"Pop Muzik".
Moroder started composing and producing in the 60s already; there is such a big
amount of records from his feather that it would make enough to write a book.
And I'm shure someone will do just that one day. He is like a
producer/singer/song-writer with many masks. His range is so incredibly wide.
It goes from Kraftwerk-like experimental electronics via film-music (a lot!) to
hyms of the Olympic Games. And don't forget: He couldn't play an instrument.
The things he did in the 80s and 90s are still widely unknown to me, but I
guess it might be too early to rediscover them anyway; we might just not like
them now. I'm shure he did a lot of crap for money, but that's the way he was.
He did anything.
I'm shure we will dig out more about Moroder in the future.

Thanks a lot for your responses. Shure helps for further experimenting
and examinations. And at last I know what the accubias does!
The reason why I recommend Maxell - and to a certain extend TDK-tapes is
because of their mechanical qualities. While I had tape confusions with
the result of sudden stops with all other brands I never had it with
Maxell. Maybe coincidence but I use cassettes for over 20 years now.

Is that Combustible Edision song available elsewhere? Some other Christmas
package perhaps?
Just wondering.
Wouldn't want to throw my money at a national franchise without good reason.

Subject: (exotica) Report from the Tiki Room
Well folks, the love/hate relation with the Disney company continues. I j=
ust
returned from a little vacation at that tourist Mecca of Western Civilizat=
ion
- -- more commonly known as Walt Disney World. I came away being a little
depressed at some of the changes. Major renovation and "improvements" (th=
eir
word, not mine) have been made to both the Carousel of Progress and The
Enchanted Tiki Room. Both of these subjects have been discussed here and =
I
(unfortunately) will resurrect this thread.
We will start with the Tiki Room. The exterior of the building still
maintains the exotica and tasteful Polynesian theme but an ominous sign at=
the
entrance says "The Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Management". It should
read "Mismanagement".
The "pre-show" (waiting area) consist of some appreciated exotica music. =
I
heard the original version of "Quiet Village" and then some generic versio=
n of
Bali Hai and Taboo. A water fall flanked by two tikis opens and two touca=
ns
(voiced by Phil Hartman and what sounded like Don Rickles). They carry on=
a
dialog that basically revolves around the Tiki Room being under new owners=
hip
and that there are "profits to be made - as in money!" Now that really re=
eks
of the Disney mentality =96 I guess they don=92t feel the need to hide it =
anymore.
Next, as before, you enter the tiki room that appears to not have changed =
at
all, a comforting sight I will add. The show starts with the original 4 b=
irds
(Jose, Michael, Pierre and Franz) welcoming people to the Tiki Room,
introducing the "glee club" and starting the Tiki Room song.
So all right, I think, "Maybe the Tiki Room has not changed that much". T=
hen,
about 30 seconds into the song, the bird from Aladdin, Zazo (voiced by the
very irritating Gilbert Godfrey) descends screaming, "stop the music, I sa=
id
stop the music, what are you deaf from this stupid music?" He proceeds to
tell the birds that he represents the new management, is a star from Holly=
wood
and basically from now on it is his "way or the highway". One bird protes=
t
saying that, "but we have done it this way since 1963." He says that is t=
ough
because "the antiquated show is out and he is in!" The whole exchange was
really insulting to the old show.
Well, that is just the beginning of a continued downhill slide. Gone is t=
he
beautiful Offenbach tune where all the birds whistle and squawk. Also
deleted is the "Let=92s all sing like the birdies do" song as well as the
"Hawaiian War Chant" which was done with vigor by the tikis.
And just what has replaced them? Well, we get to hear Zazo sing his own
praises and run down the old show some more. After that the birds sing (i=
n a
more disco-like than exotica manner) these abominations: "Hot, Hot, Hot" =
and
"Rhythm of the Night". And these are so lame even Buster Poindexter and
Gloria Estafan would puke.
I know I sound like a stick in the mud, but I just loved the old show. An=
d my
opinion (like you haven't had enough of that already)? The Disney folks s=
ay
they updated the show to appeal to a younger audience. Oh, come on. The
little kids would like all the animated birds and tikis regardless of what
they sing. And for us adults (that is what we call ourselves now right?),=
I
would think that we would like the original version for, and at the lack o=
f a
better word, nostalgia reasons.
OK, so now that I have trashed The Enchanted Tiki Room - Under New Managem=
ent
what is next? Keep watching because I think they ruined The Carousel of
Progress too. That report will follow after I cool off from writing this.

I don't agree, Gainsbourg have always be playing with that talk over =

talking the lyrics out of sync, etc =8A
it's typical Gainsbourg provo style and that was so from the early =

I guess you haven't heard Culturcide's "Depressed Christmas" single,

For Gainsbourg films....
I have never seen in france the video releases of "je t'aime moi non plus"
I think...one of his other films "Stan Le flasher" was released on tape
but most of all. there was a relase compilation of 3 or 4 tapes made of
interviews.TV shows and excerpts from movies...about an hour per tape, lots of material...
appearances, dating from the 60's to his death.I think it might be called "anthologie"
anyway the initial release was packaged in a mock-up Gitanes package ( his
trademark cigarette)...and the word "Gitanes" was replaced by "Gainsbourg"
it s a great collection, made of TV programs like Discorama, Le petit
conservatoire.and it also includes the drunken bout with Withney Houston, and
the burning of money on live TV.... Its a great collection, the TV shows like
"les raisins verts"( Director: jean Christophe Averty)..where he appears with
Jane are brilliantly done.
I have never seen that collection in the US,in NTSC format. it might be
available in
canada
