Well maybe if I were younger I would recommend something better but my
favourite Moroder thing - at least as a guilty pleasure - is the song
"Together in Electric Dreams" from the Electric Dreams soundtrack. Sung by
Human League vocalist Phil Oakey. There are other Moroder cuts on the
soundtrack - along with a bit too much Culture Club for my taste - and
vinyl copies are all over the place here.

Scratch another scenario from the list of films I was going to make
someday. Even if that's not the plot, I love the idea of it. It's so...
something. Is there any "truck stop country music" in the soundtrack or
maybe Gainsbourg's own take on the Willis Brothers and other truckstop heroes?
(Do truckstop and trucking songs rate as "exotica" or would I have to join
a country music list to talk about it?)
It's trite to say it but I love truck stops. They're the first thing I
start thinking about whenever I do an American road trip. In my experience
there aren't many classic truckstops in Canada though maybe out west.
I saw a short documentary on Vic Chesnutt and he talked about getting
married in a truckstop in Texas. I've been to a few of those mall-style
truckstops which offer a lot more than a coffee and a toasted Western
sandwich but I've yet to see one with a marriage chapel.
Ever since I saw the documentary I've been thinking about how much I'd like
to get married in a truckstop. At this point I think my mother would just
concentrate on the fact that I got married finally and ignore the location.
(No she wouldn't. I'd never hear the end of it. "Who gets married in a
truckstop?")
Anyway, thanks for planting that scenario in my consciousness. Next time
I'm in a truckstop I'll definitely be looking for the trucker that most
resembles Joe Dallesandro.

Wait a minute. . . I know this. . . flutes? Weird female vocals? Duck

follows?
Quiet Village/Tahiti Sunrise/Bali Hai/Bamboo/Jungle Romance/Forbidden Island
Taboo/Moonlight in Paradise/Luau/Orchid Lagoon/Fire Goddess/Moon of Manakoora
I have that--and I love it! Especially the Morricone-meets-Exotica-flavored

The only problem is that MY copy is credited to "The South Sea Serenaders,"
with the album called _Tradewinds Romance from Hawaii to Tahiti_! Now Mo,
was your copy on one of the Alshire/Somerset/Budget Sound/Miller empire of
labels? Those guys were *notorious* for recycling tracks on a million
different records, under different names. . . So how can we ever learn who
these alleged Surfmen really are?
The FAQ (which has gone dormant lately) only singled out Rains because, like
Lyman, he seemed to have some actual artistic intentions--although he never
caught on commercially. While "the Surfmen" seem to have been a quickie
cash-in effort. . . although a delightful one I certainly admit.

<< But I guess I want to know, do you actually know people who replaced their
entire collections or is this one of those urban myths where it happened to
a friend of a friend?>>
Actually, I do personally know of a person who did this and this person did
this way back when CD was still a new medium. He sold off all his punk vinyl
and bought CDs. It was well more than 30 records - it was like a huge
collection, but he had the money to do it. I dont know if he regrets it or
not because I'm not in touch with the guy anymore.
<< First of all, when CD's came out there weren't that many records that you
could replace. And I still don't think you could replace your whole
Captain Beefheart collection.>>
He was replacing stuff like Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Damned etc. I
didn't get into it with him, about if he was able to find all of it on CDs,
but since that time, I believe almost all punk except the most obsure has been
put on CD, so it is quite possible to do this. On a related subject,
personally, I think it is people like him and the hords of other old punks who
sold their vinyl (with no intention of replacing it with CDs), that drove the
price of old punk vinyl down.

Saw the Ukelele Orchestra on Friday night at Cecil Sharp House in Camden,
London, England. They were GREAT!!
Nine people, eight ukeleles and an acoustic bass guitar
They played Teenage Kicks, Satisfaction, You make me Feel like a Natural
Woman, Disco Inferno, Horny horny horny, Sex Machine, Life on Mars, Born to
be Wild and others. They also illustrated a great angle on copyright
"borrowing" by integrating Wild Thing, Summer Nights and Sweets for my
Sweet seamlessly. They also did this with Hotel Californa, Autumn Leaves
and a Paul Anka track whose name i can't remember.
It was such a great night ... go and see them if you can. They've played in
Japan a couple of times so, wherever you are, there's a chance they'll be
in your neighbourhood.

Exactely... Somerset...Miller Int. On my cover they credit like this:
"The arrangements in this album were scored by two very capable musical
beachcombers - Joe Kuhn and Bob Louden. The Surfmen include such top west coast
musicians as Paul Horn, Roland Bundock, Jimmy Rowles, Al Hendrickson, Alvino
Rey, Jack Sperling, Sam Weiss, J. CAstonza, Milt Holland, Gene Estes, Ann
Stockton, Emil Richards. (...) Recorded under driection of D.L. Miller at United
Recording Studios, Hollywood"
Hmmm, sounds like a compilation album. Or music by a producer who hired
different musicians all the time.
I find the bandname quite confusing; when I ordered this record I had expected
to get surf-sound, but it was birdcall-exotica, a not unpleasant but still
surprise.

Well, pretty problematic to speculate about motives for making music or records.
On the quality-side I prefer the Surfmen slightly to Gene Rains.

Hmmm, what you write about different cassette types sounds like either
a new marketing strategy or in fact a new development of
"worse-improving" technical standards. I still use the same cassettes
for both, the Maxell XL-II, did it for 2 decades and have never had any
problems with them. And as the signals coming from both the turntabel
and the CD-player are analog anyway, it is literally and practically
impossible that there should be any difference. Plus I made the
experience that even cassettes that are 20 years old still have a fairly
good sound. I mean I wouldn't use it as a documentary saving-medium, but
for my personal entertainment it's more than OK.
What I did discover recentely is that the top-quality Maxell XL-II-S
tapes have a strange volume- characteristic; the input is "louder" than
what is recorded on the tape. But this happens only on one of my
cassette recorders and has nothing whatsoever to do with the origin of
the recorded signal, wether it comes from the CD-Player or the
record-player. So in order to get a level of 0 dB on the tape I have to
record something like +3 dB up to +5 dB input, but as a result I get a
clearer sound-quality than with the normal XL-II tapes.
Does anybody possibly know what the "accubias"-modulation really does? I
never understood what it is and what it does to the sound.

Hmmm... I saw the Starbucks Holiday CD with tracks by the Blue Hawaiians
and Combustible Edison among others.
Esquivel and Dean Martin as well.
It was on EMI special products. Has this ALREADY been mentioned?
Is it last year's? A repackaging of some other Christmas release?

Well I have two Surfmen records, both on Somerset, one the notorious "the
romantic lure of Exotic Island" - with the great cover of the half-naked
top half of a woman emerging from an orchid - and the other one "the
romantic lure or Hawaii" and I think they're pretty consistent and similar.
So while the musicians listed on the back of "Exotic Island" may be a
changing group from cut to cut, the arrangements are pretty consistent.
Both records, though appearing generic, are in the top ten exotica LP's in
my collection.

Subject: (exotica) Phil Moore exotica!!
Just picked up taday a copy of _Polynesian Paradise_ by Phil Moore and
his orch. (Strand SLS 1004).
My first attraction was the great cover. Full figure nude, back to,
walking on beach with a sunset atmosphere.
I knew I had to have it and didn't even bother to read the song titles of
the liner notes. Then when I got it home and started listening to it,
YOW, this is primo exotica. Bird calls, ethnic percussion instruments,
and excellent choice of exotica standards...I'm in fear of wearing out
this one!
Ther liner notes are choice, I'll quote just a brief pharagraph:
"_Polynesian Percussion_ is more than music for escape. It is music for
love. And underneath it all is the rhythm, the beat, the excitement of
open arms, warm welcome and the pleasure of romance."
The "birdcall" sounds, which actually only appear on a few tracks are the
silliest yet. To say that you can tell that a human being is making this
particular sound on "Return to Paradise" is an understatement. Although
at the begining of Flamingo is a realistic call of a flamingo and then
the sound it's wings as it takes off from the ground. A first for exotica
recordings, wing flapping ?! On a closer listening it does seem that
actual field recordings were used.
Very nice use of voices, quite unobtrusive and adding a nice element that
you don't get on Denny or Lyman's arrangements. It's similar in ways to
Stanley Black's _Exotic Percussion_ (without the bombast) or to Warren
Barker's _A Musical Touch of Far Away Places_ (without the orienal
emphasis).
Track list: Return to Paradise/ The Far Mountain/ Maiden Island/ Blue
Hawaii/ Pearls of Paradise/ Moon Over Manakoora/ Bali Hai/ Fiji Farewell/
Flamingo/ The Turtle and the Rickshaw/ Pagan Lovesong/ Tradewinds.
There is mention that Phil Moore wrote some production scores to Kismet
and Panama Hattie... but not really any indication if he's done anything
else. Any one have any info on this guy? If his other albums are as good
as this one we've got a contender.

Subject: (exotica) Goldmine's Standard Catalogue of American Records
Goldmine's Standard Catalogue of American Record 1950-1975 ( Tim Neely,
Krause Publications,1998 - $29.95)
It's the size of a big city phone book and it has the widest selection of
exotica/lounge/easylistening artists of any publication to date!!!
In my mind this book is essential for any exotica collector who wishes to
have a handy reference discography. It catalogues 45's, 10", LPs, gives
the date of issue and prices for VG, VG+ and NM.
Folks that you've never seen in catalogues such as Robert Maxwell, Hugo
Montenegro, Tony Motolla, Earl Grant, Al Caiola, The Mystic Moods
Orchestra, Arthur Lyman, 50 Guitars of Tommy Garrett, Lenny Dee....
This is Goldmine's response to a call for an all-in-one catalogue so it
has jazz, rock, country and pop. One thing I especially like is the
inclusive dates (1950 - 1975) so I don't have to burn my eyeball out on
seeing page after page of 80's bands.
The major downside is the omissions. The following artists DO NOT appear
in this catalogue: Ethel Smith, Ray Martin, Billy May, Dick Contino,
Xavier Cugat, The Harmonicats(J. Murad), David Carroll, Billy Mure...and
most likely a few others that I haven't found out about yet.
There are also a few woefully incomplete discographies of artists that
they do list, Leo Diamond and Marty Gold are blatant examples of this.
However, the compilers of this catalogue are fully aware that there would
be shortcomings and have included a section in the introduction titled "
How you can Help" which opens up the research to anyone with something to
contribute.
Of course another potential downside is that now many of our favorite
thrift store finds will now have recommended prices to which dealers can
get unreasonably insane about. But, for the most part the pricing seems
quite fair, for instance Earl Grant's albums seem to average about $3.50
for VG. Not that I'd pay that much for an Earl Grant album but I have
seen some dealers with even higher prices on such items and the price
guide could give them a better sense of reality.
Perhaps friends and spouses need a hint for a holiday present?

Two of these cuts, Tahiti Sunrise and Taboo, can be found on the cd Music
for a Bachelors Den Vol. 2: Exotica, on DCC, credited to the South Sea
Serenaders and stating it was originally released on the Somerset album
Tradewinds Romance. I guess you shouldn't believe something just because
you read it in a cd booklet.
What label is the Surfmen album on? Does it have a release date on it
anywhere?

Subject: (exotica) Lickerish Quartet
It's not a bad name for a band but "Lickerish Quartet" is the name of a
movie that was on TV last weekend. I don't know enough about it because I
accidentally taped over half of it but what I saw of it made it one of the
most joyously horrible campy film I've ever seen.
It looked Italian but if it was, the English dubbing was superb. It looked
like it was from the mid-seventies even though the TV book said it was from
1995. I don't think I believe that. The director's name was Radley
Metzger and apparently at some point before he made this film, one of his
jobs was cutting out the "naughty bits" from films like Antonioni's
"L'Aventura" before they were released in North America.
And that's interesting because the "plot" of the film concerns an Italian
family who invites this female porn star to their castle to watch
pornographic home movies with them.
There was this one scene in particular where the father and the porn star
roll around naked on the floor of the library - a floor which is covered
with dictionary definitions of words like "fornicate", "penis",
"masturbate" etc - that made me think "Oh I have to ask about this film on
the list".
I know this isn't a film-related list but there was something about the
film AND the music that made me think that someone here can tell me more
about the film and whether in fact the soundtrack is available. I can't
really describe the music but it was some cross between Tubular Bells and
Vampiros L's. Or maybe I'm just saying this because I have vague memories
of a film that did use Tubular Bells
Anyway, any Radley Metzger experts out there?
Nat
