Well, almost anything off Serge Gainsbourg's _jazz du les ravins_ (I think
that's the title, the earliest of the three titles reissued last year with
_Cafe Couleur_ and _Comic Strip_) would qualify. Also the two jazz songs
Serge wrote that France Gall recorded, "Jazz A Go Go" and "Le Coeur Qui Jazze"
would work.
And there are several songs on the Ultra Chicks series that are jazzy rather
than poppy (i think primarily on volume 2.) Let me go pop it in and check...
Ultra Chicks 2 has one perfect song for such a mood, "Une Voitre Rouge" by
Alice Dona, and another song, "Maintenant Il Telephone" by Gillian Hills, that
works that vibe by singing a french vocal over an uncredited "Green Onions."
Ultra Chicks Volume 1 has two songs that would fit beautifully into such a
set, "Nouvelle Vague Blues" (great title) by Stella, and "Laisse Tomber Les
Tabous" by Andrea Parisy. Also, Francoise Hardy has a spy guitar kinda vibe
on her early hit "Le Temps De L'Amour." And I'm sure you could sneak in
"Sexe" from the UltraLounge comp (_Bachelor Pad Royale_, non?)
good luck

I have a *hilarious* self-hypnosis record by Dr. Herbert Sperling. The guy
has this brutally strong European accent (German, I guess?) that makes it
impossible to listen without laughing. I can't imagine that anyone could've
used this record for its intended purpose -- the good doctor's voice
couldn't be worse adapted for the task.
The jacket has no information on it beyond the title and "artist," so I
don't know any further background about it.
Eb, who speaking of weirdness, finally found himself a copy of "An Evening

At the risk of going seriously off-topic here, I spent a lot of time using
a Commodore Vic-20 computer (with a full 3.5 *K* of memory), with both
cassette recorder and later the optional floppy drive, and it worked a LOT
more reliably than any Windows computer I've ever had since. In fact, I
haven't enjoyed computers at all since making the switch.

Lang, I have been wanting to see "Je T'aime Moi Non Plus" for years. And a
Gainsbourg concert film! Are these avaliable for play on the US video system?
Where did you see them at?
If I get any of them I will report my opinions back to the list.

On the drug tip, I've got a fantastic one called, simply, "Head." It's an

Yeah, but marking on albums is like defacing good artwork. Another example
is, I put my initials on all my CDs in case they get stolen or something.
And sometimes, I'm very hesitant to mark up the ones with nice artwork.
(Yes, there are some out there.) But again, for who? So I do it.
I manage to sleep at night.
Still, writing all over the jacket just seems crummy.
And putting a piece of paper inside, works okay except that you have to
actually reach inside to get it, and sometimes it falls out.
I'm thinking of taping an index card to the inside of the sleeve that
actually sticks out and wraps around, putting any notes on that.
That or just compiling a list in a DB somewhere, where I can make a
printout whenever I need it.

I've got a little rating system I've just started that's very weird, but

But I'm wondering if any others have good systems I can klep from.

You don't want to know... Hybrid Kids is one of my favourite records
(I think we should have should have favourite intentionally and unintentionally
weird categories although where would you place Lucia Pamela?) so I've been
following MF closely. He apparently became Veedham Morgan Fisher,
joined that cult headed by I think the now deceased Bhagwan Shree Rajnish?
at least I assume so, as the leader's name is mentioned as an inspiration on
at least one of the records and produced several new age records which are
completely unlike his earlier material and not too terribly interesting.
While we're on the subject of radical departures, what of this more recent Gershon
Kingsley record called "Much Silence"? I picked it up some time ago and it's very serious
sounding! Anyone know more about it?

Most enjoyable of the series so far IMO. I particular like the international

Mieskuoro Huutajat - Six National Anthems
(the worldfamous Finnish Shouting Choir, on Bad Vugum of course)
V/A - Pebbles vol.3 "The Acid Gallery"
(psychedelic volume of this sixties punk series)
Texas Chainsaw Orchestra - Texas Chainsaw Orchestra
(possibly my favorite noveltyrecord. All sorts of different hardware are
used to cover "I will Always love you" etc.)
Twinkle Brothers & Trebunia Family Band - Higher Hights (Twinkle inna Polish

(Rastas meet up with a Polish gypsy folk band. The companion dub set, Dub

E.J. Korvettes is no longer. It shut down a decade or so ago, IIRC. The
store's name was rumored to stand for "Eleven Jewish Korean veterans." Can
anyone confirm this, or is it just another urban legend?
I don't have this particular Organ and Chimes LP, but I've got at least 15
others in the "genre." The odd thing about 'em is that they are *all*

anyone know during which years these things were released, and what were

Subject: (exotica) The Surfmen
This one has probably been mentioned years ago (before I was in this
list), but as I have just discovered it, I have to mention it (again):
I bought it from Brad: "The sounds of Exotic Island" by the Surfmen. Now
this is an exotic record in the true and original sense of this list's
programmatic basics. Bird calls and all. And what kind of bird calls!
These obviously man-made hoarse croaking crow voices are amusing on the
edge of funny. Nevertheless a fine background music work of the class
of...say, Gene Rains.
Basic Exotica classics in rather calm versions have gathered, such as
Quiet Village, Bali Hai and Taboo. Well, what can you say... With the
same right as Rains, the Surfmen belong into the FAQ of the Exotica
mailing list , once designed by Ross Orr, remember? Although under a
wider view, to which the Exotica list meanwhile has developed in
general, this style would now only be one branch of exotic music and I'm
almost tempted to call it "Birdcall Exotica".

"Je t'aime moi non plus" is pretty delirious: it's set in a truckstop and
features Joe Dallesandro (of Warhol/Morrissey fame) as a gay truck driver
and Jane Birkin as an androgynous waitress (I think, it's been a while
since I've seen the movie) who falls in love with him. On the other hand,
the concert film is probably from Gainsbourg's later years, and very
likely to be one of his shows with the American musicians who backed him
up on his "funky" albums like "Love on the Beat". By that point
Gainsbourg didn't really sing anymore, but talked/mumbled through his
repertoire. I find it a very sad sight, especially if you love the
original versions of these great songs.

Subject: (exotica) Help needed!
Hi
I'm working on something that to my knowledge is the first attempt to
write an exotica oriented comicbook. Or rather an outer space exotica
comicbook! It will when finished have around 40-50 pages i think. It
takes place in a contemperary Stockholm (My hometown) and ends with a
blast at a fictional South sea Island. Important things is to appaer at
a Tiki Bar/restaurant called "Tahitian paradise" on one of Stockholms
islands, Kungsholmen. But since there are no Tiki Bars here (Except a
Tiki Room once in a while), and I want to be true with such details I
need that some of you guys will help me out. What I need is a lot of
Photos from the inside of a nice Bar with lots off mean, evil-looking
tikis and decorations. It is necessary that the photos display there
objects clearly so I think its best if you use a flashlight during your
photo session. I'm hoping for at least 36 photos and they wont have to
be from the same place. This is fiction.
As payment for this job, if I am satisfied with your work, that is,
you'll either get some money or... a part in my comicbook! A small part,
you'll probably only be seen in a couple of images, but nonetheless a
part. It will be a character with YOUR face, and YOUR name. You will
probably be a devotee to the que figure in the comicbook, the wonderful
Mary Mayo like etheral lady singer. This means you have to send photos
of yourself too.
I am a happy owner to some issues of Ottos Tiki News, but allthough the
images is great, their small size and the way they are printed makes
them almost impossible to use as inspiration.
If interested please e-mail me.
Magnus

could any of the 'younger' members of the list offer commendations on the
work of giorgio moroder, the infamously innovative disco-producer who
encouraged donna summer to 'feel love' with a mighty moog backing in 1977.
i'm attempting to locate an obscure moroder b-side, heavily sampled by dj
shadow on the 'organ donor' track from his debut 'endtroducing' lp.
apparently there are other obscure gems in moroder's treasure-chest; but
where to look, & what to listen for? your replies eagerly awaited, & much
appreciated.

i've many suggestions to make, though would be interested to read others'
assessments of the year's releases, reissues & pirated recordings.

Today's Boston Herald had a feature article on Oranj Symphonette's upcoming
appearance at House of Blues in the Friday 12/11 expanded arts section. One
complaint however. The writer, Bob Young, alluded to the fact that O.S. can
make "even" the music of Henry Mancini come to life (or something to that
effect, the article is not here now). I had to disagree with that one. Not
that they don't make it born again, but the stuff has plenty of life to it to
begin with.

I've been hunting high and low for this one, and haven't found it
either. However, I have found another one on the same label, with many
of the same pieces. For those looking, the one I found is:
"TV Toons Present: Les Meilleurs Generiques des Series TV Francaises"
(1998, Play Time (a division of FGL), PL980441 - 303 6482)
It features 41 tracks, although I couldn't find reference to any by
Andre Popp on it!

I'm too old, but...
how, btw, did you manage to print your header & adress in purple? I thought
any kind of HTML is rejected by the list...

Great page! AND:
On sunday we expect the Heino 60th birthday and christmas show in German tele!
(ARD 20.15)They even start "Tatort" - usually on this place - later, just for
our Heino.
Saw him the other day in the Harald Schmidt Show and he 1. had difficulties to
talk (some kind of Alzheimer maybe???), 2. he had new improved sunglasses,
some chique technoid metallic thing, 3. he presented all kinds of merchandize
goodies, mostly food, such as the Heino-Hazelnut cake, Heino black-brown
hazelnut choclate with the lyrics and the notes of his famous hit on the
back-side and his face as Haribo-Weingummi, a sort of eatable sweet rubberish
material-like substance. 4. he has a new album called "Der goldene Heino". He
had a new song in his luggage that he performed in the beginning, that went
something like "With 60 life just starts etc."
Let's hope the best - expect the worst!

Quoted from Techweb News (http://www.techweb.com/):
"Canada Taxes Blank CDs And Cassettes
The Canadian government has imposed a tax, effective Jan. 1, on
audio-recording media at the rate of 50 cents per 15 minutes of each
digital audio-recording media sold or imported. With the audio capacity of
a blank CD-R disc at 75 minutes, that means an extra $2.50 (Canadian) per
CD, more than twice what blank CD media costs. The government also levied a
25-cent tax on analog recording media, such as blank cassettes."
Stock up now, northern comrades.

Subject: Re: (exotica) A Bad Feeling
I am way behind on mail and just happened to spot your letter.
I had the same experience trying to track down the "Dig It!" CD reccomended by
Brother Cleve. I finally found a source on the internet who claimed to have
it and I ordered it and never heard from them again. I think they went out of
business. So that CD is gone.... no source that I know of for it.
But as for lounge disappearing. Here in Los Angeles, Lounge is still alive
and kicking and I am not at all convinced that swing has "taken over." As far
as I can tell swing is just a flash in the pan here. I mean, it has always
existed on the underground level and okay, with Brian Setzer and the Cherry
Poppin whatevers it has registered a blip on the mainstream radar screen but
if you ask me, If this was SUCH a phenomenon, the average Joe Idiot out there
(I include myself in this column) should be being bombarded with this
everywhere they go - newspapers, advertisements, etc. Swing has not, IMO made
that kind of impact - not compared to the impact lounge has had on commercial
advertising, NO? I am constantly finding lounge inuendos in advertisements,
TV shows, etc. I do not see that happening with swing.... As far as I can
see the uninitiated could continue to live their life and never run into any
info or signals there there is some sort of swing revival in effect.
As for what's happening here in L.A., Last time I checked there were still
lounge CD record bins at both Tower Records and Virgin Megastores. I think
buying over the internet will be the only solution though, for anyone outside
of L.A. I wonder why it is being "phased out" in other states, but is still
an entity here in L.A.? What about San Francisco or other big cities in the
states? Anyone?
