The titles are obviously made up for the sake of a bad pun; witness further
"Fists of Curry" and "Pimps, Players and Punjabis." The music is great indeed,
but I'd agree the package leaves a little to be desired. Specifically, what's
with the shoddy, lo-res vidcaps on the cover?

As I posted earlier, Motel Records is selling this directly for only $13 flat,
which includes shipping. You can call them toll-free, 1-888-755-6347.

My personal instinct tells me that this stuff (from Bollywood) may be real, at
least the movie dialogue seems real! But the music, due to its titling, is
automatically suspect. It sounds vintage and much of it is in mono, but after
the Desco Fiasco, who know?? And yet, it may seriously be older Indian Crime
Movie Music. Did it actually happen? And is there a Bollywood? I await more
definitive info, and maybe I am just a cynical reactor to the forces of
marketing

There sure is. Bombay's film industry is perhaps the biggest
indigenous movie production nexus outside of Hollywood. You
haven't lived until you've seen a three-hour long musical
remake of _The Godfather_, or a searing three-hour musical
look at terrorism in the Kashmir region, or a three-hour
musical romp about chasing thieves across India using
every form of transportation known on the sub-continent.
(Yes, they're almost all musicals & they're very long

Bollywood apparently produces more films than Hollywood. The Indian
film industry is the biggest in the world. Or so I am told.

Subject: (exotica) Replacing collection
When my CD collection was STOLEN BY SCUMBAG BURGLERS about 3 years ago I
tried to replace it with Vinyl (its got to be harder to steal the whole
lot in one go, right?). Much more difficult than you would think,
considering the number of re-issues that had happened, Scott Walkers
Scott 1-4, not as expensive as it used to be but I still haven't got
hold of 1 and 2, and all for much more than the ten pounds each I spent
on the CD's. And so much modern stuff just isn't released on vinyl I
finally had to relent.
I thought the Mr Mophiji was fairly lame funk apart from the animal
noises on side 2.

I haven't heard the Bombay CD yet, but it sounds to me like Motel Records
thought the original Hindi titles would "too much" for the average
non-Indian audience and opted for the tongue-in-cheek approach. I would
hope that they at least indicate the Hindi titles somewhere in the liner
notes. Do they?
For what's it worth, Kalyanji-Anandji is actually a duo songwriting team,
probably most famous for their 1970 score to the film Johny Mera Naam. In
addition to this one, I also have their soundtracks to the films Black Mail
(c.1970s), Purab Aur Pachhim, Qurbani (c.1980s), Uljhan (1975), and
Vidhaata. Personally, I prefer the music of Rahul Dev Burman for the really
groovy 70's stuff, and the team of Laxmikant-Pyarelal for the cool moody
stuff.

Subject: (exotica) The first Lounge Ring
This messagge is to inform you that a the first official "Lounge" Webring
has been created!
- ---What is a the Lounge Ring?---
This ring is comprised of LOUNGE, COCKTAIL, EASY LISTENING, EXOTICA, COOL
and STRANGE MUSIC oriented web sites, all linked together by hypertext
coding, that forms a circle. It could be likened to a "Lounge Music
Neighborhood on the Web".
- ---Why the Lounge Ring?---
Surfing through web sites dedicated or related to LOUNGE, COCKTAIL, EASY
LISTENING, SPACE AGE POP, BACHELOR PAD or any COOL and STRANGE MUSIC, I
realized that all of them had a page of links, which linked to the same
sites. So why not create a Ring that could connect people and sites that
share the same interests?
- ---How does the Lounge Ring work?---
By placing your site in this ring, and adding the coding that will be
mailed to you, will enable a surfer to click on a link at your site to move
on to the next related site in the ring. And the same thing happens when a
surfer clicks on a link of a Lounge related web site and ends up on your
site. This sistem can also generate major exposure to your web site!
The Lounge Ring system is absolutely free. You can decide whether to join
or leave the Ring whenever you want.
You can find more information and examples regarding The Lounge Ring at its
homepage:
http://members.tripod.com/~evemusic/ring/loungering.html
E-mail me if you have any questions.
Thanks

Displaying beloved LP covers
If you are a recent Powerball winner, I suppose you could kick up the $13
a frame (as per restoration Hardware) to display your LP covers. Far cheaper
is to visit a real hardware store and purchase a length of picture or dish
rail. This is a decorative strip of wood with a handy groove cut right in.
Have two pals hold it straight, nail to wall. As much or as little as you like.
Relatively easy to remove if you rent or redecorate a lot.
The plus - you can display many LPS -- and as another said, re-arrange/update
frequently and easily. Put up your favorite Xmas LP now, switch later to New
Years party scenes etc.
Al
p.s. you cna also play them easily. The odd - and creepy fetish thing about the
RH frames is they gloat about sticking the whole works in there, vinyl and all.
Like, wouldn't you want to PLAY your favorite records too? Maybe.

Subject: (exotica) Cats
Investigator Bev Hogue has conducted an interesting experiment
with a cat:
"Perhaps your readers (Annals of Improbable Research - T.) would
be interested in a recent observation concerning cat hysteria
brought on by the theme music from the original Star Trek series.
The music propelled the cat from catnapping to full hysteria in
under 10 seconds. It should be noted that the Star Trek theme music
was being produced (loudly, with a lot of emphasis on the high
notes) by four human beings not noted for their abilities to sing
on key; exposure to the theme music of the actual show had no
measurable affect on the same cat. The hysteria manifested itself
in the typical cat behavior of galloping around as if being chased
by George Scherr, and the behavior ceased when the music (such as
it was) stopped, though the cat showed signs of apparent paranoia
for at least an hour afterward."
1998-11-08 Cat Song Survey
Inspired by investigator Hogue, we invite you to take part in our
survey entitled "Feline Reactions to Theme Songs." Choose a theme
song, sing or play it to a cat, and record the following data:
1. Name of theme song:____________________
2. Reaction of cat:
___indifference or sleep
___production of noise (please specify)
___production of substances (do not specify)
___flight
___other (please specify in 25 words max)
Send your report to <marca@chem2.harvard.edu>.

Subject: (exotica) Thrift Report
Well, in preparation for my new finds arriving, I'm taping for car
listening (it's the only time I get to sit and listen) a bunch of cassettes
of older thrift finds I have. Here's some quick reviews:
Morton Gould - Jungle Drums
Morton Gould, Marty Gold, it's close right? I got duped by the name and
the half naked chick on the cover, hiding behind a palm. Gould is an
orchestral arranger and there's not a friggin' jungle drum anywhere to be
found. Instead, it's very orchestral treatments of latinate exotica
standards, like Jungle Drums (hence the name), Caravan, Hawaiian War Chant,
Malaguena, and so on. When I say orchestral, I'm not just talking strings,
I'm talking it sounds like something out of the Nutcracker Suite most of
the time. Pretty dull, unless you like full-on orchestras. War Chant is
interesting, except the nimbleness of the tune gets tripped up by the
weight of the orchestra. Also, it's not particularly well balanced, so the
horns carrying the tune are overrun by the strings playing backup. Caravan
really sounds like the Arabian Dance from Nutcracker. Again, slightly
interesting for fifty cents, but nothing I'd search for.
Charles Magnante - Fiesta! - Command
It's fantastic. Get this one at all costs. The track list covers a few of
the same items as the Gould, but it's just Magnante and his accordian, plus
a few percussionists and maybe a bassist. There might a guitar player too,
I can't remember. In any case, it starts out with a super-latin bang and
though the second side gets a bit Spanish-y (think Mexican Hat Dance or
Cucaracha), it's still pretty good all the way through. If I had to, I'd
pay the bucks for this one. Though it only cost me fifty cents.
Enoch Light - Movie Hits - Project 3
A later Enoch album, and my first exposure to him, leaves me yawning. The
track selection looks great, but it's all pretty watery. The Godfather
Waltz is NOT the same as the Godfather Theme, alas. There is an
interesting bit of jazz-fusion going on in the French Connection theme, and
the theme from Shaft is decent, but too close to the original to make it
worth playing this one. The rest is slow and stringy, or even really dorky
in some cases. No percussion or organ, really. In any case, maybe pick it
up for a quarter.
Dick Hyman - Man from ORGAN and Electrodynamics
Both of these cost me a pretty penny but are well worth it. ORGAN is a
classic and covers all sorts of nifty spy-type tunes on the organ with just
enough help to really swing. Electrodynamics is not quite as strong, but
it starts out very Moog-like, with a nifty version of Stompin' at the
Savoy. It's a later album, '72 I think, but still pretty good all the way
through. When are they gonna re-release this Hyman stuff??
V/A - !Wild! Stereo Drums - Capitol
I bought this when I was a neophyte. What a cover. And what a name! But
man, only if you really really really like drums, because it's not much
more than eight or nine drum solos. Yawn, mostly, though it does have the
nifty Bongo Bash by Pepe Dominguin that's on the Saxophobia UL disc. The
two Les Baxter tunes are disappointing and so are the other Pepe ones. The
two Dick Harrell tunes are alright. I would include Rocket Racket on a
tape. If you see it for cheap, pick it up maybe, especially for the
cover. But I paid five bucks for it. Yikes! What did I know.
Warren Kime and Brass Impact
Oh yeah! King Kini turned me on to this. A real go-go swing thing with
wordless vocals and sharp brass, on Command. They cover Mas Que Nada, Mr.
Lucky, One Note Samba, plus Elenor Rigby. Woohoo! In any case, this
rocks. It cost me a few bucks, and was well worth it.
Dick Schory - Runnin' Wild - RCA
The same Stereo Impact album they took the cuts from for the Space Age Pop
series. There are definitely others I would have picked though. It starts
slow, but the back side is fantastic. I got the die-cut outer sleeve, but
no inny. (Anyone have an extra?) Plus, I got it cheap, but I'd pay for it
for sure. Lots of good brass, much percussion and generally well-crafted
arrangements. Very fun.
Bert Kaempfert's GH
Not exciting, really, but a nice introduction. There are a few
arrangements I might toss on a tape, but not stellar by any means.
Herb Alpert - Whipped Cream and Other Delights
Sure, sure, we've all got it and I've got two, but I only just recently sat
down to really listen, and except for Taste of Honey (which I was humming
incessantly all Thanksgiving. It wouldn't go away!!) it's pretty mediocre.
Ah well.
Francis Lai - A Man and a Woman
Really really good light bossa tunes. If you like Gilberto, you should
samba down to your local thrift and pick it up. It's nice and light and
airy, great for hammock summer listening.
The Folkswingers with Hariha Ross - Raga Rock
Go-go type arrangements with sitar. Nothing that really shakes my shoes.
Very average. Maybe if they had some horns?
Anyway, that's the report so far.
More to come as I tape and listen.

The instance I know of was one of the guys who works at a local
record store who dumped everything along with his turntable and
rebought as much as he could on CD. Convenience was the driving
force and I think we're talking of a collection in the order of 300
to 350 which I consider small. It is feasible to do (assuming you have
the money to do so) if your tastes in music are more mainstream but I
have to say looking at our colection, we'd be lucky to be able to replace
25%!

Actually he was a Penguin Cafe Orchestra fan and he was able to get
those...

You're overestimating the dedication of the average person's
attachment to records as collectible objects. You, and I would have to
include myself in this category as well, are what the average person
would call obsessive. If you consider the contents of the average person's
music collection, you would probably not have any problem understanding
why they woudn't hold any particular attachment to it!

I replaced one Klaus Schulze LP early on which I had hoped would be an
improvement, only to find the CD to be of inferior quality. I consequently
dumped it and rebought a newer vinyl copy which someone else had
obviously dumped (there's of course since been a 20 bit remastered version...)
and at that point I stopped. In fact I reverted to a last ditch vinyl splurge, figuring I may
never get a second chance. This multi-edition reissue game is highly
annoying and the Residents are one group I waould have to sigle out a
a prime offender in this respect.
> And by the way, I think you'll always be able to replace your cartridge.
Yes, but a lot of the manufacturers are disappearing. I'm totally sold on
moving coil and the choices here are limited. I'm currently using a
Signet (Audio Technica) OC-9 which I think (hope) is still in
production.

We interrupt our regular discussion of music piracy for this bulletin:
I just trudged around to all the music stores in downtown Ann Arbor, and
what I found chilled me to the bone . . . the music industry seems to be
abandoning "Lounge" in a big way.
Maybe you all knew this, but I hadn't shopped for CDs in a while, and I
sort of panicked--buying up about $100 worth of reissues that I figured
would simply be unavailable next year. . .
Everywhere I went, the "Lounge" bins had been moved to back corners, shrunk
in size, and left picked over without restocking.
One store owner bluntly told me that the Bar None _Infinity In Sound_ I
pulled out of the bin was the last one he would be ordering. "They just
haven't moved like the earlier Esquivel releases." (By the way, did the
_Latine-esque_ reissue ever make it out the door before the axe fell?)
Even the once-ubiquitous UltraLounge series seemed to be less visible, with
only about 9 of the volumes still on the shelves.
The final insult was having to rescue Martin Denny's _Hypnotique/Exotica
vol. III_ from the "Swing" bin at a Wherehouse Records. They just changed
the name on the sign, still leaving behind the cutesy little Martini
drawings, the swine. I had previously wondered why Ashley sounded
so aggrieved about the whole Swing scene--but no more.
So friends, if there was anything on CD you had been meaning to buy, but
hadn't gotten around to yet. . . You may not have much more time. . .
wistfully,

I know a direct-x plugin, Magneto, here's some info from the manufactor,
Spectral Design:
If you're one of those people that thinks digital audio sounds 'cold'
then you'll love this plugin! Magneto is the perfect tool for Mastering
purists who want to achieve analogue warmth without adding any unwanted
noise. It simulates a classic Lyrec 24 track tape machine for true tape
saturation effects ranging from a wild, overdriven compressed signal to
subtle warmth.
Cheers, Ton

I LOVE Glenn W. Turner!!!
in fact, he has a website!!!
off the top of my head, one of the weirder records I own is by Rosemary
Brown: "A Musical Seance." She was an English woman in the early 70's
who channeled new music from dead composers and played it on the
piano!!!!
