The big difference is that the appeal of Johnston/Shaggs/Knife (and yes, I
own records by those groups!) is based in an overall amateurish, garage-pop
charm, whereas Bacharach's records are otherwise the peak of technical
expertise and sophistication. Thus, Bacharach's poor singing is dissonant
against his music in a way that doesn't happen with the above three.

That's Costello voice, and he presents it sincerely. Are you saying it
would be MORE sincere if he attempted to sing light, feminine and casual
like Dionne or Dusty? I can certainly grant your complaint about Costello's
overblown singing, but I'd call that just a "minus," not an ferocious
instrument of "decimation" and "destruction." Whew!
And...uh...if Costello were really so preoccupied with "his best market
interests," he certainly wouldn't be recording a record of mellow love
ballads with an older pop songwriter who's mostly unknown to folks under
25. That seems fairly obvious.
(Personally, my favorite track is "Tears at the Birthday Party," though
"Toledo" is a good one too.)

I don't think anyone can challenge Lou Reed in this category. Not to
mention any rap artist. ;)
And, you know, the less-is-more sensibility isn't exactly a cornerstone of
the exotica ideology either....

I don't agree with that criticism, in any way.

Combustible Edison really played a super tight set of their exotica on
Saturday night at the Howling Wolf. The Howling Wolf is a small club
in an old warehouse near the Mississippi river bridge. There's a
great sound system with excellent separation inside.
I got there an hour early and was impressed at the amount of well
dressed people in a N O club. I mean this is generally a get down
sort of club. I met Br. Cleve right off and was able to speak to him
for a long time while a cassette from the In Hi Fi club NYNY played
over the speaker system. I asked Br Cleve what one song was that I
was totally impressed with and he said he found it down in Mexico &
bought it for the cover.
The band started playing at 10:30 an ungodly early hour for music in
N O! The Sat night before Dick Dale started playing at 12:45. It was
amazing how well rehearsed the band was. I forgot how well the
millionaire can announce a song. He drank out of a cocktail glass the
whole set. He toasted the audience and said "When in Rome" He's also
is one great guitar player. The selection of songs was perfect, the
band did a bang up version of "Shot in the Dark" and they ended the
first set with "Miniskirt" They had the whole crowd moving and
swaying and dancing to their music. The second set was even more
upbeat. For an encore the did "Cry Me a River" and "Millionairs
Holiday" I brought a friend with who had never heard of C Ed and
being a musician he was so impressed they weren't reading music. He
couldn't get over their musicianship. Needless to say our own Br
Cleve looked oh so suave and played with inspired fingers! I was most
impressed with the stereophonic extravaganza put out by his synth, I
mean the music bounced back and forth enough to impress Esquivel
himself. Br Cleve says Esquivel is not doing well at all. Its a
shame that it will be a long time before theres a new C Ed album or
they play again in NOLA. You're so lucky if they're still coming to
your town.

Well, there's always "Christmas With Chippy the Chipmunk", an early 60s
Chipmunk-sploitation album (on Silver Seal, a production of Premier Albums
Inc). I like the liner notes:
"Oops! Here we go again. That mischievous, lovable Chipmunk is here for
Christmas. 'Chippy' and the gang (Woody & Chuck) are all here to help you
celebrate the Christmas Season. Leading off with 'Jingle Bells,' they sing
ten of the most popular Christmas songs -- songs for each and every one of
the family. The children love to sing along with Chippy Chipmunk, and you
grown-ups will be caught in the fun singing along and enjoying the
merriment of the children. Make your home a happier home this Christmas.
Join in some good wholesome fun and sing along with Chippy The Chipmunk."
Funniest part is that although they changed the characters' names on the
cover, on "Chipmunk Song" they actually use the Alvin, Simon and Theodore
names! Maybe they figured Bagdasarian's lawyers wouldn't actually bother
listening to the vinyl?!?

As I grumbled earlier this year, I for one would much prefer not to
read screeds of largely irrelevant obits on this list. And given that
*anyone* can set up a mailing list now for free at such places as
http://www.listbot.com/ it would be very easy to set up an
"obituaries list".
Of course, I'd like to know when one of the "legends" passes on but
I don't need to know about the demise of every last ukelele player.
Having said all that, I gather I am in the minority and since I am
now receiving posts separately, I might try to construct a cunning
email filter...

Eb replied:

I was more or less refering to the fact that any singer chooses the way
in which they sing. Sound, inflection, phrasing, etc. it all starts as a
conscious decision of the vocalist, I didn't mean to single out Costello
on this point. If he wanted to sing in a falsetto whats stopping him?
Listeners expect singers to sound like they have always sounded, i.e.
their trademark sound. If a singer re-vamps his or her style they are
taking a risk from a sales point of view. This is all I meant by "market
interests".
As far as sincerity goes...maybe I was wrong, maybe this is Costello's
truely uninhibited voice. It's difficult to tell when a professional
performer in being sincere since some carry their "actors persona" into
their personal life.

Wondering how to make those holiday gatherings more festive? Try these two
tips from "How You Can Give Hawaiian Parties," an early 60s booklet by
Patricia Collier, Chief Home Economist for Dole Foods.
Hawaiian Suggestions for Miscellaneous Affairs
There are times of course when a few Hawaiian touches rather than a
complete Hawaiian theme are what is needed to add sparkle to a supper or
celebration dinner or other special occasion.
Let's say it's Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner you are serving. You,
or one of your guests, have recently returned from the Islands. And so,
just for fun, you drape a lei of raw cranberries or red radishes (or
parsley or parsley-and-cranberries or radishes) around the neck and over
the breast of the turkey, before bringing it to the table.
For a Cocktail Party
An amusing edible decoration for a large open-house gathering: a
"pineapple" -- any size -- made of liverwurst shaped around an inverted
jelly glass, with sliced stuffed olives for "eyes," and iris leaves for the
top. Skin and mash the liverwurst, adding just enough mayonnaise so you can
shape it by hand. Mark the surface with diagonal lines, centering each
square with an olive slice. Serve with crackers or toast, and
butterspreaders.
Mrs. Collier primly avoids recipes for demon alcohol. Here's a classic, US
measurements, from Ted Saucier's "Bottoms Up," 1951.
Trader Vic
by Trader Vic, Trader Vic's Trading Post, Oakland, California
1 1/2 oz. Siegert's Bouquet
Juice of 1/2 lime
1 teaspoon sugar
Squeeze lime into shaker. Add ice, rum, and sugar. Shake and strain
into chilled cocktail glass.
Remember Ted's advice: Don't let a cocktail stand too long. Drink it as
soon as possible, while it is "alive."
Okole Maluna or Cheers!

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Professional poker player Stu ``The Kid'' Ungar, who won
major tournaments and millions of dollars, was found dead Sunday in a motel
on the Las Vegas Strip. He was 45.
An autopsy was planned. Police said there was no sign of foul play.
Friends and colleagues told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the frail,
thin Ungar had been hooked on illegal drugs. He also suffered from numerous
health problems, sometimes winning poker tourneys while in agony from
stomach ailments and colitis.
Ungar won the World Series of Poker tournament at Binion's Horseshoe casino
in 1980, 1981 and 1997, the year he defeated more than 300 competitors to
take home a $1.1 million pot.
He once lost $1 million in a single craps session and dropped hundreds of
thousands in no-limit poker games.
Ungar became a top gin rummy player while growing up in New York City,
where his father ran a bar. He learned to play poker after moving to Las
Vegas in the 1970s.

I'm pleased to announce that I have just gotten my own radio show with my

can be heard on CHSR 97.9 FM here in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
I've created a website to promote it (and my art) which is at:

Any feedback on the website or its contents is greatly appreciated.
Also, for all you radio programmers out there (I know there are a few) -
any advice or words of wisdom would be great. I'm particularly
interested in getting music for the show (I can only afford so much
myself and the station doesn't have money to go out and buy whatever I
want).
Message ends,

P.S. I'll post the timeslot for the show on my website when it is
confirmed.

will see that EC does sing with falsetto for a few notes, and, not to fan the

and can sing like a motherfucker to boot...He HARDLY chases market interests,
he does what he wants to do musically regardless of trends or criticism. He is
an artist--how many of his critics here can say the same??...Jimmy/longtime EC

One of the great things about this list is how it can inspire.
Not so long ago someone mentioned the Laurie Johnson. Rummaging
through the stacks today I found a 1964 record that has the
elements so familiar to those familiar with The Avengers...
agressive bongos, strings, percussive highlights and brass dynamics.
"Introducing England's New Big Band Sound" Colpix CP 471. While
normally I am not into strings, Mr. Johnson knows how to balance
everything quite nicely. Thanks for suggesting it.

Just back from Django's in Portland with an armload of LPs.
"Byron, you have got to be a record nut to carry all those
records for 15 blocks in the rain!"
I plead guilty.
Found a great Jack Costanzo record, but wonder whether it is
a reissue of an earlier album. This one is called "Themes
Go Latin" Liberty LN 10202, released in 1983. It was
produced by Felix Slatkin (who did that great percussion
orchestra record for Liberty) with most arrangements and all
piano solos by Eddie Cano. On this record are Naked City,
Third Man Theme, Peter Gunn and Route 66 in very clear,
well separated stereo. The personell make it seem like late
1950's...but the sound is so good and there is no indication
this is a reissue, so I don't know. Many of the cuts on this
album are now part of the Ultra Lounge CDs, although on clean
vinyl they sound better and more alive!

No, the man died in '95. Check out the cd 'Grand Travaux' for a great
introduction to his work. Roger Roger also worked for production music
libraries. I would be very interested in tapes of some of his records.
Anyone?

Well Charlie,
It just is a strange thing that Delirium in Hifi by Andre Popp sells very
well and the Grands Travaux by Roger Roger does not. And that is strange
since Popp was very influenced by Roger Roger and this album is so much fun
to listen too. Dont think of my posting as a true ad: of course we want to
sell discs but only to keep Basta going and trying to make more records like
Popp, Scott, Roger Roger & the Beau Hunks. Believe me or not: I only work at
Basta as of Februar this year and I did not listen closely enough to Roger
Roger untill a month ago. And after listening close to it I thought: WOW,
What a great record!!! And it was so close to me all the time ! Keeping
Basta going takes so much of my time that I really must make time for these
listening sessions. And then I was confused why so many people bought
Delirium in Hifi and so less people Grands Travaux. I just thought I mention
that in a small posting. I am sure there are some exotica - people from this
list that know the record. Maybe they can give their opinion in this matter.
I gave mine for what it is worth it.
Regards Jeroen

This piece is from an upcoming album that is currently being prepared for
release. The album will be titled Manhattan Research, Inc. and contain
musical compositions by Raymond Scott. As described on www.RaymondScott.com:
*****
This collection, produced by Gert-Jan Blom (leader of the Beau Hunks), will
feature first-time-ever releases of archival Scott recordings (1950s-70s)
including such RS inventions as The Electronium, The Clavivox (Keyboard
Theremin), The Circle Machine (early sequencer), The Rhythm Modulator,
tone-generators, & other home-built equipment.
*****
You could roughly devide the recordings into two sections: commercials &
electronic experiments. My personal opinion is that Raymond made the most
strange & beautiful compositions in his 'cockpit of dreams'(that is how he
called his studio, beautiful expression, isnt it?). The track provided comes
from one of the discs I have with material Gert Jan selected for this
release. But it is not even sure this track will be on it. There is really
so much material to choose from.
Together with the two discs in this album will be a 96 page booklet
containing lots of interviews, info on Rays inventions and more.
It is scheduled for worldwide release in Februar 1999. Anyone who wants to
be informed when this album is available can send an email to
RayScott@Basta.nl and you will be notified.
All questions regarding Raymond Scott can always be send to
info@RaymondScott.com or ScottInfo@Basta.nl . We will always try to get you
an answer.
Thanks & regards

I have just listened to the track (downloaded the sonique player too),
but I dont know... Not quite in my taste. I guess it would startle a
techno fan. But hopefully it is this single track on the CD that i wont
care for that much.
A little disappointed but still hoping,

Actually, this clip is from a piece that will (probably) *NOT* be on MRI.
So, you've got 1.5 minutes of an EXTRA OBSCURE track!!
We don't know the 'real' title for certain, but G-J has been calling it the
"Cindy Electronium instr. groove." There's another version of "Cindy
Electronium" that is more likely to be released on the CDs. Both are from ca.
late 1960s.
Although these 'Cindy' takes are cool, there will also be FAR more
accessible, & unusual, & varied material on MRI ! ! ! MRI must be heard to
be believed! (SSFB does not tell the whole story. There's far more
interesting material that is pre & post-SSFB.)

Subject: techno-schmecno
"RECKLESS NIGHTS AND TURKISH TWILIGHTS is a collection of music Raymond
Scott wrote and recorded between 1937 and 1939. It is totally inspiring; high
energy music with tempos that rival any speed garage techno-schmecno dance
music."
-From AVANT Magazine (Current issue, Autumn, 1998)
Subject: ELECTRIC BABYLAND
Excerpts from the article ELECTRIC BABYLAND,
appearing on the current issue of MOJO Magazine:
...
Raymond Scott locked himself away in his home studio to become, in effect,
the father of electronica -- as well as giving a young engineer called Bob
Moog a crucial break in audio electronics.
"When I first worked for Raymond, he had a very large laboratory in the
basement of his mansion," Robert Moog recalls. "The room was completely
filled with rack upon rack of relays, motors, steppers and electronic
circuits. He would set it going, then go around and adjust various things to
change the patterns that were begin produced. I'd never seen any thing like
it."
...
Another of Scott's inventions was a sequencer based on an old analogue
telephone exchange: "I think it's fair to say that he built the largest
sequencer ever made," says Moog. "The installation I saw occupied an entire
basement room."
...
Despite the veil of secrecy that the increasingly paranoid Scott drew over
his mechanical babies, word of The Electronium started to spread. Motown boss
Berry Gordy pulled up outside Scott's house with a fleet of six limos, and was
so impressed that he made Scott Director of Research And Development at
Motown.
...
More than forty years after their collaborations, Robert Moog still
acknowledges his influence. "Raymond had brilliant intuition -- he could
imagine something and just experiment around until he got the desired result.
He once said to me, 'The trouble with you is that you believe just because you
think about something, then it's done.' Back then I was having a hell of a
problem managing my time -- Raymond put his finger on part of the problem."
Moog's epochal MINI-MOOG, which is once again in production, provides ample
evidence that the sounds which Raymond Scott pioneered are now an intrinsic
part of the soundtrack of modern life.
