Well, I thought I'd take this historic moment of John Glenn's re-entry into
space, to tell you that Senator Astronaut whole-heartedly endorses
Astroslut...
OK-it's a lie, but in the interest of being self-serving, I thought I'l let
anyone who would be anywhere near Boston know that our First Anniversary
show is Monday, Nov.16th, at The Green Street Grille in Cambridge. It's
frees-ville. What are we like? We sorta describe our sound as
"now-sound-space-porn-moog-sploitation." It's mostly original, with
keyboard player Quinn Martian writing the songs. If anyone is interested,
I can e-mail you a really blurry pic or two of me in my spacesuit.
That's all for now, I'm blushing! ;^<>

While we're on the subject, I just picked up a copy of "Mah Na Mah Na -
The Complete Remix Project" on Easy Tempo, which has 9 versions of the
song, including the "Space Go Go Mix" and the "Tiki Mix". Featured
artists include The Karminsky Experience, and Raphael Sebbag of United
Future Organisation. If you like the song, this CD is highly
recommended!

Subject: (exotica) Who is Bebe Bardon?
I suspect this record must have come up when we were discussing "sexy
music" or "makeout music" or whatever but I just picked up 101 Strings
"Sounds of Love" record and I must say that the female heavy breathing
sounds on their version of "Love at first sight" - or as we usually know it
"Je T'aime" - made me cross my legs and shift uncomfortably.
In fact I don't think "heavy breathing" quite says it. More like the best
faked orgasm I've ever heard. On record anyway.
(I won't argue that perhaps I have been the sole audience member for the
odd fake one in real life. But they all fooled me is all I can say.)
Anyway, on the back of the record it says it's "the voice of Bebe Bardon".
Am I supposed to know who that is... besides someone who fashioned her name
after another sexpot?
Anyway, if anyone knows of other records where I can hear Bebe almost cum,
please inform me immediately. A few more records like this and I might be
able to save that 3.99 a minute I usually spend to hear sounds like that.
Although I guess the record's not exactly interactive.
By the way, the version of "Sounds of Silence" with the lyrics recited as
if they're poetry has got to be one of the funniest things I've heard in a
while.
Anyway, I think I'm going to record ninety minutes worth of that tune and
just play it on a constant loop.
And if you haven't heard it and you like heavy breathing, you must find
this record.

From: Nat Kone <bruno@yhammer.com>
Subject: (exotica) Com Ed, two sets, three cigarettes
In the grand tradition of other listmembers such as Ross Orr and Will
Straw, I too hauled my ass out of my apartment this evening in order to
actually go see live music, in the form of modern rock band Combustible
Edison, featuring the shit hot - and I mean it - keyboard playing of our
esteemed fellow listmember brother Cleve.
And they were damn good.
One thing I have to say is that bandmember "The Millionaire" - a more
transparent pseudonym than "Nat Kone" if you don't mind me saying - looks a
hell of a lot like the aforementioned Will Straw until you get closer and
then you see that he's not quite as devilishly handsome as Will.
Anyway, I met brother Cleve and we talked about what else but I forgot to
pay his band the ultimate compliment. This was the first live music show I
attended since I became one of those guys who buys cigarettes individually
for a quarter.
I was there three hours, two whole sets and a break... and only smoked
three cigarettes!
That's how entertaining they were!
If you've never smoked you might not understand this but I've lately become
frighteningly aware of how boring standing - or sitting - there doing
nothing can be. So the idea of standing there listening to a band without
a constant chain of smokes seemed unthinkable. But I did it and one of the
ways I did it was to constantly exclaim to myself "wow that brother cleve
is a shit hot keyboard player". I alternated that with "I can't believe
I'm not smoking right now!"
And I wasn't really a fan before tonight. But now I am. I was actually
skeptical about the whole idea of this kind of music being done in a modern
and updated style but I guess I have to give up that skepticism now.
It was like totally familiar and totally new and cool at the same time.
Okay enough gushing. brother cleve won't be at home and so he won't be
able to read this anyway.
Oh I have to tell you this. At one point when I was talking to my fellow
exotica list buddy, some fans came up and got autographs and stuff. (One
of them even had the band sign her copy of the Four Rooms soundtrack which
made me remember once again how horrid that film was. And that reminded me
of this interview I just read with Allison Anders where she said that
originally her segment with the witches was supposed to be done all nude.
I can understand her outrage when Madonna told her that she wanted to cover
her tits for a change..)
ANYWAY, the fans were asking whether they were going to do this or that
song in the next set. And when cleve said yes they would be doing "Shot in
the Dark" or whatever it was, one of the other so-called fans asked "Oh is
that cut number eleven on the CD?"
I thought that was a very "CD moment".
Anyway, if they come to your town, go see them.
The whole time I was there I just wanted to come home and immerse myself
even more than normally in all this stuff. I can't believe it but I think
I've reached the point where this kind of music is actually a "legitimate"
part of my catholic taste now and not just this strange little sideline. I
guess that's been true for a while but for some reason I never think of it
that way.
But now thanks to Combustible Edison and shit hot keyboardist brother
cleve, I guess I do.
But Little Marcy is still on the fringe of my taste.

Here we are, from "The Soul of Harlem" (played by The World's LARGEST
Dance Orchestra, Orchestra Del Oro, arrangements by Don Costa)...
"Harlem, the Blues -- Harlem, the Cha-Cha. A polyglot lady expressing
herself in gutteral down-home slang, hipsters jargon and three
dialects of Spanish spawned from the Antilles to Mexico City... the
quiet sophisticated bars where conversation drifts from Bach to
Bop... greasy chitlin' joints raucous with the sounds of too much
cheap wine... from Ellington to Lecuona, soulful jazz to staccato
bongos. Arriba to 'go man, go'. These are the chunks of pigment in an
ever-colourful, ever-moving mosaic framed in Harlem."
IMHO the best liner notes ever are from the Studio Two album, "Sounds
Incorporated", which sound like new wave SF acid-brain-fracture
poetry. I must bring that in and transcribe them sometime.

(Hey, Jimmy!) Yeah, dat's da one. And just last week Takako Minewaka
("Roomic Cube," "Cloudy Cloud Calculator") breezed through town, too. Just
call SF the Pacific Rim Job!
KK(KKK) plays Bottom of the Hill Saturday 10/31 at 10 pm (for $10) and
Sunday 11/1 at 9pm (for $7). Her collaborator Momus ("The Little Red
Songbook" which, judging from his album cover, looks to be a bit of a
"Switched on Bach" pastiche/parody) is actually headlining. Saturday night
should be a more interesting crowd.

(AP / DAVID BAUDER, Associated Press Writer) wrote:
NEW YORK (AP) -- Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach sat in a hotel lounge
explaining why their musical partnership wasn't as odd as it seemed. The
usually voluble Costello did most of the talking.
Bacharach listened, and not just to his younger friend. He smiled in
recognition upon hearing the first few notes of one of his songs, ``The Look
of Love,'' quietly playing in the background.
He asked Costello -- maybe seriously, maybe as a subtly competitive joke --
if he had arranged to pipe in the instrumental version of Dusty
Springfield's classic. Costello shot him a sardonic smile. It wasn't the
first time he'd been interrupted in
public by Bacharach's work.
``It happens all the time,'' he said.
<<snip>>
Many of Bacharach's songs go down easy, but Costello appreciates the
complex melodies and the way they can convey emotion even without words.
Bacharach may be popular in lounges, but that's not how he defines himself.
``If you want to put any label on it -- cocktail music or easy-listening
music -- I'm not going to be angry with that,'' he said. ``I don't
necessarily agree. I don't think `Anyone Who Had a Heart' is easy listening.''
<<snip>>
The experience taught Costello a new economy in lyric writing. Bacharach
may look the epitome of California cool, but he would put his foot down when
Costello would return from a writing session and try to cram a few extra
syllables into a line.
Bacharach is a man who once got into a fierce argument when writing
``That's What Friends Are For,'' insisting that the first word in the song
be ``and.'' It didn't really mean anything; he just liked the sound of it.
And he wouldn't let it go.
The discipline helped Costello, whose songs can be wordy and dense.
Costello also helped Bacharach, partly weaning him from synthesizers to more
organic instruments, like the bass flute that opens ``In the Darkest
Place.'' Costello said his aversion to
electronics comes from his ``Steely Dan phobia.''
<<snip>>
The two would like to work together again, and are doing a limited series
of concerts. Costello jokes about a Burt & Elvis-palooza next year --
``where we just go on stage for three days and play every song we know.''

Mondo Bongos can be heard every Wed at 9 am on CFRU 93.3 fm in Guelph,
Ontario.Canada. Comments & questions welcome.
Saroff & the Cool Ones: Blue Prelude "Like Beat Man"
- - found this lp in the used bins & although the record & cover were very
worn, I couldn't pass up an original 'beatnik' record. Cool jazz with
poetry readings by Pike Distahl plus the obligatory flute & bongos.
Lalo Schifrin: Jaws "Black Widow"
- - a very funky version of the movie theme
The James Taylor Quartet: Man of Mystery "Creation"
DJ Rodriguez: Bitches & Friends "Acid Jazz on the Rocks"

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Three members of the defunct punk band The Dead
Kennedys are suing lead singer Jello Biafra for allegedly shortchanging them
on royalties and mismanaging record sales.
The lawsuit was filed Thursday by Ray Peppernell, Geoffrey Lyall and Darren
Henley. They are also known, respectively, as East Bay Ray, Klaus Flouride
and D.H. Peligro.
They accuse Biafra, whose real name is Eric Boucher, of failing to promote
the band's material while investing more money in his solo career.
The band toured from 1978 until they broke up in 1986.
``We want him to take us into consideration. We made music together, and I
think he's treated us shabbily,'' Ray said. ``He's the hardest person in my
life to get along with.''
A spokeswoman at Alternative Tentacles said Biafra was touring and
unavailable for comment.

Here I am: the song is a classic in Italy. It was sung by Mina
(unamimously the best ever italian femme pop singer, still
nowadays) in the 6t's. The version by Delta V is trip-hoppy, but
doesn't lose its appeal. Though I don't like any trip-hop, I
find it nice and like it whenever I listen to it on the radio. The
rhythm doesn't take over the melody, and the arrangement is elegantly
and softly built. It is, at any rate, quite danceable. It has a
catchy black'n'white video, shot in the backseat of a limousine;
the girl singer cries her way all through it (lyrics are sad,
indeed). If you don't find it, just let me know. I'll just have to go
the first record shop around the block.

No relation at all. I think it's the first release from the italian
deltas.

Subject: (exotica) Pictures of Command Action Figures
Brian was asking this past week about where one finds pictures of some
Command label people.
For pictures of Enoch Light, Project 3 albums are more likely than Command
records to have his image. Try "Spanish Strings" or "Permissive
Polyponics" or "Film on Film" on Project 3 for Enoch visuals.
There are photos of Charles Magnante on his Command albums "Carnival in Far
Away Places" (907), "Romantic Accordion" (888), "Roman Accordian" (852),
and "Fiesta" (869). Carnival has a unique photo; the other 3 LPs have the
same photo, but all appear to have been from one session.
I don't recall ever seeing a photo of Lew Davies. I'm sort of curious
about him, because I recall reading that he was born in Kentucky (I live in
Louisville), and he did great arrangements of music. If he was still alive
and retired in Kentucky, it would be fun to interview him for the "Spaced
Out" site that Robbie B. has. A question, perhaps for Lou on this list:
how does one find out if someone is alive or deceased???

Actually I think the suit is about something to do with royalty payments which
are doled out/controlled by Biafra and apparently mismanaged
I think the more important news is that Ray and Klaus have a new band which is
an instrumental band a la The Ventures and they are really good!
