He was one of austin's most beloved musicians. He also had quite an
impressive gang of folks he'd played fiddle and guitar with over the years,
starting back in the 70s in South Carolina with Walter Hyatt and David Ball
in Uncle Walt's Band, thru the 80s with various austin folks including Jimmie
Dale Gilmore (jimmie & champ hosted the wednesday supper sessions gigs at
threadgills for many years), and into the 90s with Toni price and various
others, including a few tours with Lyle Lovett.

William E. Dacus, drummer, mechanic and pilot: born Quinton, Oklahoma 11 July 1911; died Rogers, Arkansas 9 October 2001.
Smoky Dacus was the "godfather" of western swing drummers. Although his playing career was a short one û effectively just six years from 1935 to 1941 û he defined his instrument's role not only within the hillbilly jazz that is today recognised as western swing, but also within country music in general.

Can anyone recommend any other Moondog albums?
Yes I can recommend MOONDOG ûMoondog, prestige hi fi LP 7042, 1956 (my copy
is a vinyl re from 1990) and this record is.... yes, very EXOTIC. You will
hear exotic instruments like the Oo, a triangular stringed instrument struck
with a clava. The Trimba, a triangular Drum, the female voice of Suzuko
(moondogs Japanese (?) wife), there six week old daughter, BIRDCALLS and even a
TIGER. A great piece of unusual exotica !

I agree with Moondog's music sounding "exotica" without actually being labelled "exotica". Another non exotica Exotica album I would recommend is Harry Partch's "The Bewitched", or many of his records, but Bewitched stands out in my mind. He used many homemade instruments that have an exotic quality to them, many sound like Boom Bams, claves and other "exotica" type percussive instruments. Plus lots of wordless female Yma Sumac style "HEE-YAA!s" and yelps. If you like Yma Sumac's "Legend of Jivaro", you will love Partch. Granted his music is a bit more dramatic and over the top than say Martin Denny or Sumac, but to me sits along side my Baxter, Lyman, Sumac and Denny in my exotica collection.

Moondog! This is going way back to when I first joined the list back from=
=20
April of 1999:
"I can personally recommend Moondog on CBS from 1969, although I would pass=
=20
on Moondog 2, which is choral in content, but not as interesting. My father=
=20
used to see Moondog (Louis Hardin) standing outside of his house in full=20
Viking garb when he was on his way to work.
My brother and I had a devil of a time finding the album, but we got it!=20
It's orchestral and even features a song dedicated to Charlie Parker.
Incidentally, he was recently interviewed on NPR, having just performed in=
=20
the UK. Not only has age not slowed him down much but he kept time on a=20
drum for one song and wore some of the younger musicians out!"
Addendum: Moondog 1 and 2 have been reissued on one CD. It's mostly=20
orchestral for 1 and 2 is primarily vocal. Also, the fabled Moondog vs.=20
Alan Freed suit had more merit than I thought, because when I heard part of=
=20
the Prestige album, Freed was using Moondog's music as part of his theme=
song!
What I have heard of "Sax Pax For a Sax" was nice, too. I have a tape=20
(somewhere) of an interview with him on National Public Radio.
Bow-woooooo,
Brian Phillips

The way I see it is that Jack Diamond is doing a service for the
world selling the kind of limited addition cds he sells. Many of
my all time favorite albums I purchased from him. Who else in the
exotica world was selling the titles he sells? I laugh out loud at
some of his hilarious descriptions. Dustygroove brings a smile to
my face every time they write "What can I say". Dustyrooves
descriptions have led me to buy more cds I don't like than Jack's
verbose excalmations have. But I still highly recommend Dusty as
one of the best stores on the planet earth. I find Other Music's
descriptions more straightforward and sincere. But give me Jacks
descriptions any day. They brighten my day as does the obscure
exotica he sells.

One of the best Freudian slips I've ever seen - (or did you misspell this intentionally?)
No... we wants not to know more...

You gotta unnnerstann where Jack D. is coming from. I think he came up with
the name because of its potential cache. Like Jack Diamond, Private Eye.
As opposed to (his real name), dysfunctional shut-in.
