Discovered these on GTV last weekend and watched 77 and Eye. Was amazed at

IMPORTANT NOTICE: After a 3 1/2 year wait, Turner Classic Movies is
repeating Bop Girl Goes Calypso with score by Les Baxter. Date is Nov
11(late Sat/early Sun 3am eastern). Music by the Mary Kaye Trio, Nino Tempo,
Lord Flea, and the Goofers, who feature a trombonist on a trapeze. Special
appearance by Julie London hubby Bobby Troup as a noise meter techie, whose
scientific research on crowd reaction in a nightclub provides evidence that
Bop music is being overtaken by Calypso music. No, I'm not making this up.
Earlier that Saturday afternoon TCM is rerunning I Love You Alice B Toklas,

This week's upload is the complete soundtrack to Beyond The Valley Of The
Dolls (aka Hollywood Vixens), Russ Meyer's campy, trashy and very funny
look at the sexploits of an all-girl rock group, the Carrie Nations, who
will do anything to make it in sleazy Hollywood. Their "anything goes"
attitudes towards pot, group sex and lesbianism lead to several sticky plot
complications, culminating in a murder spree. Bearing absolutely no
relation to the Jacqueline Susann novel/film Valley of the Dolls, Beyond the
Valley of the Dolls was co-scripted by film critic ROGER EBERT.
This soundtrack is quite rare and the movie has developed a huge cult
following. I guarantee you, our dear Astroslut, Jane Fondle would give it a
very enthusiastic thumbs up. :)
Of the twelve tracks, there are only two instrumentals and the soft main
theme by The Sandpipers which pretty much appears twice. The rest is rock
vocals by the Carrie Nations and Strawberry Alarm Clock, which may result in
a letdown for some.
Don't miss the original radio spots!

I finally had the opportunity to visit NYC for the first time since August,
and the first time obviously since Ground Zero. Former listee Jack Fetterman,
whose efforts towards a more exotic world know no boundaries, served as my
host. A small museum near his home has some emotion-tapping photos of 9.11.
And, the celebration of the marriage of Ursula1000 to his lovely betrothed in
Midtown Manhattan served as the backdrop to this visit. Challenging the
Naysayers was the spirit of the celebration which was officiated by our own
Brother Cleve, handpicked by the lovely--believe that!-- couple as an
ordained minister. With entertainment by the Lounge-O-Leers (who's EZ take on
Destiny Child's "I'm A Survivor" somehow took on a mystical quality) and
several DJ's who's competition for the turntables was civilized, though
fraught with peril, an exotic night to remember was had by all IMHO.
Then---walking up to Footlight Recordsthe next morning---"and the sign said"
""EZ listening-75% Off"". How often do you even see EZ referred to, let alone
at 75% off? Anyway, after over an hour perusing the vinyl, here's what I

Subject: (exotica) Moondog vs Mr Scruff
Well, I got the Moondog LP home and Michael was right, 'Get a move on' is
almost completely lifted from 'Lament #1', apart from the voice snippet I
think everything else came from it. In spite of that I don't think having
this has changed my enjoyment of Mr Scruff, the two although the same are
quite different dynamically.
From the sleevnotes it seems that Moondog composed and conducted all the
pieces himself. With a couple of exceptions the LP is Orchestral (classical
even), Lament #1 has the alto clarinet lead (and is based on Moondogs
meeting Charlie Parker) and a rhythm track played by Moondog and part of one
of the longer pieces which has a similar groove.
The sleevenotes are very interesting, a brief history of moondogs life
(omitting the fact he was living on the street when he recorded the LP) and
a bit of background for each track. And a lot of stressing the musical
conventionality of the pieces.
Parts of it reminded me of Honeggers piece 'Pacific 1-2-3' that I had on a
Dada LP, but then I'm not too hot on classical music anyway.
Very good Sunday morning music I found.

I finally got round to listening to the whole thing, not just the Mr
Scruff sample track, and was very impressed - it's mostly classical (you
can tell that from the Columbia Masterworks label and the sleevenotes),
but it's quite percussive and strongly rhythmic throughout.
Can anyone recommend any other Moondog albums? I know his name has come
up before, a long time ago I think.

Subject: (exotica) other weekend things
Firstly I must apologise to the Anubian Lights (not knights as I've been
mentally calling them for the last 6 months). A pretty good 12, very much
in the DJ You DJ Me mode (the Anubian Lights seem to have production links
to them and Sukia), and Theresa a DJ You DJ Me remix of one track. Some
nice Sitars and some nice groovy bass. Fairly mainstream in the modern
Loungecore style. Or whatever you want to call it.
Worth having.
I went up visiting the big city and inherited some records thrown out by
someone's mother. Not that much of interest, but there were some things of
note.
Count Basie Orchestra plays songs from Half a Sixpence. I really didn't
have any hopes of this. At all. Jazz versions of Tommy Steele songs, lord
preserve us. Especially as my friend said 'Are you sure? its real trad
Jazz.' Well, thankfully he's not too strong on his Jazz Genres. This is
pretty good, swinging, superior big band Jazz, as you'd expect from Basie,
I'd suppose. This is the first LP I have of his. One of the soloists is
Illinois Jacquet, who I can remember my Jazz buff friends revering.
On Contour records licensed from Dot.
Also on Contour from Dot I have Billy Vaughn (is it Billy? I'm sure it is,
the Vaughn is right, as I remember checking it as it looked funny) 'La
Paloma'.
I'm not sure if this is absolute genius or completely dire, absolutely the
most cheesily cheerful LP in my collection. Nice looking girl in a bikini
next to a palm tree on the cover, lots of up tempo instrumental covers on
the record. Not one for Alan I reckon. A bit of guitar twang on one of the
tracks, but not much more, nothing at all about it sticks in my memory
apart from the mood. Quite, quite bizarre.
Also an LP of film themes by the Cinematic Orchestra. The usual suspects
really, 'When a man loves a woman', Laras theme'. Quite well done, and a
couple that I don't have, so its a keeper, but not necessarily a player.
Theres a couple of others that I haven't played, that include a Bing Crosby
live in London double set. It has Ted Rogers on a couple of tracks. The
presence of Ted Rogers disturbs me. And I can't bring myself to play it,
because of that fact. But at the same time I can't dispose of it without
listening to it. I want to listen to it but I can't.
I have a vague recollection of Ted Rogers having been a singer a long while
ago, but I can't shake the image of cheesy gameshow host. Its not good.
The sleeve even has pictures of him and Bing on stage. Big seventies
microphones, big shiny seventies black suit, big seventies collar. Bad Tom
Jones hair. Its a morbid fascination I'm developing.
I'm almost sure the whole thing will turn out to be dreadfully dull, most
of the things I'd be interested in have been dragged into medleys. Theres a
version of 'Send in the clowns'.
Thats enough rambling, sorry.

Subject: (exotica) Weekend Finds.....
On a beautiful Sunday morning strolling around a huge outdoor flea market =
there was a guy with box after box after box of records - and much to my =
girlfriend's chagrin I rolled up my sleeves and dove into the vinyl.
At first I was put off because I spied Les Baxter's Tamboo out in front =
with a bag on it - checked out the vinyl and it was just "ok." I asked =
the guy how much the records were and he said, "Anywhere from a dollar and =
up" - so that *really* made me skeptical. But, after passing up the =
Tamboo (I had a better copy) I found Taboo 2 by Lyman (again in a bag) and =
the vinyl was in great shape, then along comes some Heino(!) records. =20
Now this is the first time I've seen "the man/the legend" and just had to =
laugh out loud. Here was the splitting image of Andy Warhol with dyed =
white hair and an all-silver suit glaring back at me! Whoa. I almost =
took a chance but decided to skip over the three Heino albums in there.=20
So I started thinking to myself, this looks like an exotica list members =
collection!! And I started to get that feeling that I'm sure you can =
connet with when you just know this is going to be a good selection of =
vinyl woth flipping through. Then there was Truck Turner (I passed this 2 =
LP set up - any good??).=20
I did find a few LP's - I found that great (well, the first LP anyway) 2 =
record boxed set "Songs to keep your husband happy" with "How to Bellydance=
..." and "How to Strip...." records and what I had hoped was a copy of the =
instruction booklet - but alas, it wasn't inside (dammit!!). The =
bellydancing album I had on CD courtesy of someone on this list - and it =
is *GREAT* but I have a feeling the "strip" album is probably your =
standard ragtime/strip music. I forget the band leader's name - is it =
Sonny Lester?
So anyway, the Taboo 2 was $5, the box set was $2, and all the other =
records were 50 cents (Leis of Jazz, some great Bond rip-off LP's with =
groups like the "zero zero seven band," a Dean Martin spy album "The =
Silencers" ) listened to this one this morning - disappointing, but great =
cover of a round bed and several beauties lounging with Dean.......so I =
made out okay - his prices were all over and had NO pattern at all.
The best and most surprising find was a copy of Robert Drasnin's "VooDoo" =
- - I didn't even realize what it was until I got it home. The cover is =
incredibly cheesy - with a "staged inside set type shot" of a dark jungle =
with two natives banging on drums and a gal doing a wild jungle dance. =
The liner notes are really weird and mention something about being shocked =
to find a voodoo doll with pins in it in your bed after listening to the =
album!!!
I also found a great "space" themed cover - can't recall the composer. =
It's a guy flying through space on a Vespa scooter that has a trumpet =
attached to the side as though it were a rocket powering the scooter =
through space. The rider is dressed up in a tux and holding a french horn =
or such brass instrument to his chest. Dean Elliott perhaps?
Another seller had some older Venture's albums and would only sell me the =
LP's at 50 cents each *if* I could round out the purchase to $6 (an =
additional two LP's) or else he said they'd be $1 each!(?). Got an X. =
Cugat (a close-up of his face, red background - single title like =
"Fabulous" or something like that), a "Four Pianos Play the Hits" type LP =
(a desperation purchase to round out the albums) and Mexicali Brass play =
Green Hornet and other hits with a neat-o cover of said Hornet holding his =
gal and pointing a handgun straight at you.=20
This seemed to be the weekend of the low budget spy LP's!
A fun record hunting day! I actually had to pass up another huge boxfuls =
of LP's a few rows down due to the time and an exasperated girlfriend. =
(Although she DID have fun browsing through a HUGE box of the early =
newspaper format SCREW magazines for sale - they were $5 a pop or 100+ for =
the whole box while I flipped through records!!)

Wow! Great haul Nate!
The Sonny Lester "How to Bellydance" album IS great. I found a fairly
scratchy copy myself not long ago, but the sound quality during the songs is
acceptable (it's just between the songs that I wince). Darrell plays a
couple of numbers from that album pretty frequently on his show as well as
from one of your other great finds, Drasnin's VooDoo. I have only heard
this thanks to DB, but I would consider myself extremely lucky to find a
copy that didn't cost me an arm and a leg.
I'm sorry to hear that your girlfriend gets exasperated with your record
searches. Even though my wife doesn't much care for my exotica tastes, I
feel extraordinarily lucky that she actually encourages my habit and, to
beat all, she actually wants to put album covers as art up in the new room
that we've added. At the moment the walls are white, and I've suggested
some of the Command covers. I know others have wallpapered with HA's
Whipped Cream. Any tips on things to avoid in the process? The room gets a
lot of light, so I'm worried about fading. Anyway, sorry to get off topic.
Keep letting us know about your finds. It keeps the fire of hope alive.

Omigod! What a pile of files!
Sounds like a job for a filesharing program.
I really miss Napster - the user base was so large that I could find a LOT
of really groovy stuff, and there were a lot of very appreciative and cool
users who would email and thank me for the stuff I had available for share -
which was a mish-mash of my stuff and all the things my 15 year-old Nephew
would download. You will be pleased to learn that Andre Popp was just
downloaded from me just as often as Limp Bizkit.
Perhaps if there was a robust sharing system that permitted user-searches,
we could all agree to share there. Has there been any coordination on the
list in this regard?

I really enjoy reading about people's LP finds - it DOES keep your hope =
alive, but besides that I just think it's fun to read about people's =
excursions into junk shops and roadside yard sales. The actualy "shopping =
experience" is a lot of fun in it's own right - the people you run into =
(good and bad and kooky, etc....) add to the things you find.
Oh, I want to mention that tucked inside of one of the Venture's albums =
was a personal calling card (with a local high school's graphics on the =
front) from a friend who wrote on the back - "Greg - you're the best =
lunch buddy I ever had, best of luck in the future - but it's not like =
you're going to need it." Things like that are also really cool to find!

<..I question it's rarity...>
I'm always careful about using this abused term. So make that hard-to-find.
Until last week, I had never held a copy in my hands - and I collect
soundtracks. It does book $100-$150. Bidding history on ebay when it does
show up supports this.
Mind you, I'd be the first to concede pricey and scarce do not guarantee
greatness. Like John Barry's The Wrong Box - what a painful lesson that
was. I don't care for Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls much, but I thought it
would be a worthwhile upload.
<songwriter Lynn Carey>
Thanks for reminding me - this was important to mention! For those that do
not recognize the name, check your Incredibly Strange Music books and look
for gorgeous Lynn with a lion cub feeding at her breast. Cool and Strange
recently did a spread on her.

what a great haul. I LOVE finding fresh boxes of records. the Drasnin record
was a fine find. In the future, though, I'd think twice about passing up
Truck Turner. IMHO it IS really, really good and not as common as Shaft or
Tough Guys. Still, ya can't complain...
dry record hunting here. jeez...

Subject: (exotica) More Weekend Finds
Like Nate, I had a great weekend find folly as well. My wife let me go to
the WFMU fair on Sunday even though we're low on money. She's not into this
kind of music either but let's me have my fun.
Met Tony Wilds of http://www.wildsscene.com/wsounds Talked a bunch about
stuff I'd had questions about being any good like Chiano. Always assumed it
was just percussion and chants without very good music. He said it's real
hollywood stuff and great liner notes on the CD out there if you can find
it. He has a great story. Have to keep my eye out. Tony sold me in his $3
bin:
Three Suns "A Swingin' Thing" and Mel Henke's "Now Spin This!"
He gave them both to me for $5, he used to be on this list.
He had Les Baxter's "The Primitive & the Passionate" for $35. I said, "Too
much for me, maybe I'll come back later and talk you down". I did. He said
it is the last of the great Les Baxter exotica albums. I listened to it.
It truly is. Highly recomend it.
Found two Elmer Bernstein albums:
Movie & TV Themes (from $5 talked down to $3): Excellent album. As good of
crime jazz as they come.
A Man & his Movies (from $10 talked down to $5): : Pretty much the same
cuts but with 4 more. This one is in stereo but the identical cuts from
Movie & TV Themes aren't in stereo. I've heard the Stereo Movie & TV Themes
from a public library and it's true stereo. Get the Movie & TV Themes iffen
you can find it.
Leo Diamond's Stereo "Exciting Sounds from Romantic Places"
(for $1). Guy who sold it said, "Another record for the cover, eh?" I said
no, for the music." It's really good. Multichannel overdubbing of many
types of harmonicas. Got that "Sea Diver's Suite" feel but in a stereo
actiony way.
And now the cream de la crop. Tony Mottola's TV Soundtrack to Danger!!!
The guy didn't know what it was but said "I bet it's worth a lot" "How
much?", I asked. "$15, maybe?", he said. Always one to talk someone down
even if it's a good price, I said, "I'll give you ten." He said, "I better
look it up in my book." I almost said I'll take it for the $15 (remembering
it was worth a lot in my book) when I saw he had a Goldmine album Price
guide but not the soundtrack guide. I held off. It wasn't in his book. He
said "How about $11?" I took it. When I got home and looked it up, I found
it worth $75-100. Whew!
It's good too. Great Mottola guitar with the Ray Charles Singers doing
wordless vocals, simular to the Walter Schumann vocals on Exploring the
Unknown.
That's all. Sorry for the long letter. Please delete this to save on your
drive space.
Like,
Doug

I got to peruse the Rekkid Fair on Saturday. Scored a Sir Julian
(organ in orbit, I think) in stereo for $5. Talked to Tony Wilds also for a
bit. His prices seem to be coming down a bit (like from $150 to $75, say),
must reflect current supply and demand, post 9/11 market etc.
BTW he has an excellent site which you should check out if you haven't,
wildsscene.com, a good roundup of various genres and titles to look out for.
Later I got a jones to hunt for cheezy 80s synthpop singles. (with
picture sleeve of course, otherwise why bother). Looked thru some unindexed
bargain bins. Did find a copy of Heaven 17 'Penthouse and Pavement' for $3
but passed it up cause there was a small hole in the center of the pic.

Oh no! You passed on Heino!! I think all exoticats should have at least
one Heino in their collection - not that the music's any good (it's actually
pretty awful, but you just can't beat the appearance of the guy!)

I hope this lineup lasts for a little while, at least. It's such a
pleasure... an intravenous drip of low-budget, light-noir, b&w,
mini-movies. Hey, JBG, I hope you caught your fave rave, Audrey Totter on
Hawaiian Eye. Faith Domergue turned up on Bourbon Street Beat. Actor
spotting heaven!
Also on Saturday, I did manage to catch the opening and a good chunk of
"Flintstones On The Rocks". Skip did a fine job with the music. The exotica
and ranchero variations were very tasty indeed. I didn't care much for the
cartoon itself (if you want to see Fred portrayed as a stupid,
mean-spirited jerk, this is the cartoon movie for you), but the music was
mighty fine.

He and I both had lost an eBay auction, but here is the mail that he sent
me. Can anyone help? He knows Jack Diamond, so that avenue hasn't turned
anything up. If nothing else, it looks like we are getting more Chaino issued!
"I was hoping it would be a cleaner copy than I have but maybe not so I
won't go higher. I produced it 40 years ago and need a clean copy for
promo on my new 3 CD's that are following "Chaino Africana and Beyond" I am
offering a $1,000.00 buy now on ebay for a clean copy of my other LP on
Chaino, "Temptation" I have it on reel to reel, but need the LP version.
If you find one, let me know and I'll buy it now. Put a min. of a thou on
it so no one will bid until I place my bid. Or, I'll just put the thou on
as a bid, or whatever.
Thanks, Kirby Allan"

A friend of mine saw the latest John Cusack movie "Serendipity", and loved

Does anyone out there know which Indian tunes (& artists) were in the movie?
