My hands-down favorite take on "Tomorrow Never Knows" is by Junior Parker.
It came out on a late-60's Capitol LP (on which he performed a number of
Beatles covers), and on a 45 (b/w "Lady Madonna), which is how I know of it.
  Slow and harrowing and utterly effective, and  - despite the minimal
instrumentation and absence of sitars - somehow MORE psychedelic than the
original.

Let us know if you think of that Carmen McRae record, it sounds like
something that might inadvertantly show up fer cheep in the local record
stores.  I like her voice.

I'm going to put it on Mp3.  I'm going to figure that out.  I think this
version deserves it.  As a public service.  Does Easy CD Creator make them
for you?

(By the way, my first CD burner, by A-Open with Nero software, burned out
completely after three weeks of moderate usage.  I bought a Sony and the
difference is day and night.  Warn your friends about A-Open.)

Here's the tracklist.  "Tosca arias as congas" is a good way to put it.  I
have to say, I like this album quite a lot.  Now, of course, I also like
Charles Magnante doing Rachmaninoff on the accordion, which sends my wife
into apoplectic fits, but  . . .

   Just wanted to add my two cents regarding Emil Richards: New Time
Element.

   I received three boxes of mostly instrumental albums from a friend's Dad.
Lot's of shlocky looking covers and scratchy records.
None were ever recommended from this list.  I had a decision to make on my
own, without our list's help.  Keep them or to Good Will?  The sound was
awful on these records but they were free.  And a friend wanted me to enjoy
them.  I gave them all away except the Emil Richards: New Time Element.
And it's very scratchy as well.  But, I dig it.

  I notice on the liner notes that Emil wrote, someone he thanks was a
student of Ravi Shankar and that the 7/8, 5/4, 11/8, etc. rhythm's come from
India.

  It also says that Emil was a vibrophonist for George Shearing.  More
importantly than Shearing, since getting this album, I'd read on the Exotica
List that Emil played vibes on The Surfman's "Exotic Island" or my version
with the South Sea Serenaders.

  That's it.  No more cents to add.

i like him,
not so much the earlier drum and bass stuff but the newer things
like the SUPERMODIFIED cd i dug on last year.
my favorite track, the first cut on the album, Get Your Snack On
was used on some car commercial this year.
have not heard anything more recent.
some of the tunes still hold up but not as much as i thought.
definitely worth a listen though.

I think a few people here (inc. me) liked the SuperModified LP when it
came out. along with The Cinematic Orchestra, he's better than most of
those sort of Ninja Tune types

I'm a big fan of his - my favourite CD is "Permutation".  Another very
interesting (and slightly atypical) Ninja act is Mr. Scruff - he uses very
interesting samples (especially bits of spoken word), and slightly catchier
melodies - he's worth checking out, if you're not familiar with his music.

Just got me a copy of his "Brazil Now" album. It must be from
the mid-sixties or later, judging by the track list. Some nice, gentle
now-soundish stuff with a latin beat. A real Sergio Mendes influence on
his version of "Goin out of my head". Same sort of arrangement. Could
almost be a Brasil '66 track except for the wordless vocals.
Also a groovy version of "Born Free", a song that usually,
I rather despise.

A nice find.

I've been meaning to mention the Gotan Project here for at least the last
month but work's been hectic. I only have one EP from them a 10" called
'Santa Maria (del Buenos Ayre)' if my memory serves me. It's on Ya Basta!
records and is quite obviously French. If you are a fan of tango and dub I
think you'd like it. I love it of course. Though it's probably a wee bit
mellow for my kind of dancefloor. Since then I heard another cut on the
radio, more vocal and still good. I believe they have 3 eps and that all
three have now been collected on an album. Always good to hear bandoneon on
a 'dance' record. The only other example I have is the rather strange 'happy
birthday' tango by UFO.

As I'm sure you hipsters know 'gotan' is Argentinian backslang for tango. It
wouldn't really be used much now, more of a gangster movie thing I believe.

I actually found 'supermodified' a bit too slow and underwater. Maybe
because I bought the bad sex ep (I love Chris Morris, but it's not that fun
to listen to with the vocals buried in the mix), and prefer his period
preceding that when he made evil, sick, dirty, fast jazz that you could play
at a rave without being shot. His drum and bass era (that Bump was
mentioning) was mostly done under his trip hop alias of Cujo. I think Cujo
has been retired. I have a bunch of his stuff using other names and a
fictitious collaboration album with one wicked track on it. I think a decent
example of his cujo work and why i like Amon on a more upbeat tip is on a
Compost compilation (root down from Rainer Truby I think). His tune is
driving jazz breakbeats with analogue synth filtering. You could dance to
it, but most of the record has that kind of somnolent fuzak noodling Compost
artists will revert to if given rein.

I think that's what drew me to it!!!  I like the term "underwater!"  Slow =
is good when it's *interestingly* so.

The few "hyper" jazz cuts I've heard were a bit much.

says 'as sampled by Mr Scruff on get a move on' on a sticker.
This true?
I know Moondog has been discussed before,  but would this be a good LP to
check out?  Its cheap for a new one,  but I'm feeling meanspirited at the
moment.

Get a move on is the track I heard that made me buy the record,  very groovy
odd looped jazz.
The only Amon Tobin stuff I've heard must be the Jazzy noodling that Rob
referred too,  I found it very uninspiring I'm afraid.

I love Gotan Project - the new album is due out any day now. There are 3 10"
singles by them; the second one has a great version of "Last Tango In Paris"
theme, and the third they cover Zappa's "Chunga's Revenge". Not for the
dancefloor, but definitely for the lounge. Two of the members have another
project called Stereo Action Unlimited, who just released their 2nd single,
"Lovelight", a few weeks ago. It's a gorgeous bossa nova, along with 3 very
cool remixes. There's a good Ya Basta compilation that came out a few months
ago that's highly recommended, it's a great label.

i was about to post on the Moondog/Mr Scruff thing yesterday, but got
sidetracked. i really liked the Mr Scruff track, one of my favourite
tracks ever, probably, but  i became very disappointed with it after
hearing the Moondog track (Lament #1 - Bird's Lament) which it is almost
entirely sampled from. I thought it was very cleverly (and musically)
pieced together from multiple sources.

haven't had time to listen to the rest of the Moondog record yet though.

I recommend this one for neo-lounge aficionados, not of the Om-Lounge
variety--thankfully--but of the true-to-list-form "lounge" sound...Dusty had
their single in July...there's even a "Tiki" mix...mine's has two mixes, both
highly playable

I was wondering if anybody knows if the "Harry Revel's Music from Out of
Space" by Stuart Phillips is worth searching for.  I see it on e-bay again,
this time from Jack Diamond, only with a reserve not met (usually means a
high asking price).  It tends to go for a lot of $'s.  I heard it was only
so-so, but I like Harry's other space stuff.  Also some of my favorite songs
are Stu's on the great soundtrack he did with Leith Stevens "The Interns".
I can't imagine that "Out of Space" can be only okay.  Anybody know?

Also as long as I have your ear- or eye since you're reading this -, anyone
heard the "Dick Powell Presents Themes from Four Star Television Shows"?  I
read it's conducted by Herschel Burke Gilbert of "Burke's Law" fame and has
tunes composed by Gilbert, Leith Stevens, Jerry Goldsmith and others.  It
sounds neat.

My last record on my wish list is Tony Mottola's "Danger" TV Soundtrack.
I've heard the title tune on Man From O.R.G.A.N. and also on Mottola's Mr.
Big.  Do I have all that I need or is this 10" worth the search too.

Don't be persuaded by the cover, or the song titles, or the seller's
description:

"BUT _______really_____ ________amazingly________
________great_______ and __________true_______ easy listening
and outer space easy listening at that"

The music on the LP was a major disappointment, even for the $5 I spent on
it.  Mostly mushy strings, with only nominally novel/spacey arrangements:
similar in sound and feel to a lot of those early to mid-50's Decca LP's in
their "Mood Music" series.

INCREDIBLE cover, though.
