First,
Thanks so much to Basic hip for putting up the Honey West album.  I had never heard any of this stuff before, although I had been vaguely looking for the LP ever since I heard the incredible version of 'sweet honey' on Dick Hyman's 'Man from U.N.C.L.E' LP (still one of my favorite Command LPs).  Anyway, it's great to hear it all, and see the cover art too.

As you say, it's not rocket science to convert an album into mp3 format and put it up, but you did it well, man!  I can never quite get the knack of scanning entire album covers.  Still, maybe I'll have a go some time...

Here's some stuff I've been getting into in the last few days...

L'anamour - francoise hardy
I only recently found out Francoise had recorded this classic Gainsbourg song.  It's a very cool version, gentle and catchy with cool strings; apparently arranged by Mike Vickers, who I believe is one of those groovy UK library music composers.

The 8.17 Northbound Success Merry-go round - margo guryan
From the recently released '25 demos' CD, this is a very spare and groovy number with a cool organ sound, nice drums and catchy vocals.  A little rougher than the superb 'take a picture' album, but very cool.

The name of the game - John Schroeder
This is on the 'TV Vibrations' LP, which I recently picked up on ebay.  A really nice track with brilliant organ work and a strange but catchy beat.

I'm still pretty much hooked on the 1968-72 period, it seems.  I can't seem to shake it off...

Good tips. (I live here in SF.)

Definitely check out Open Mind - they've got good stuff.  Also, across the
street from them is an estate sale store with a good stash of records (and
lots of super cool 60s and 70s furniture and furnishings at affordable
prices).  Not thrift store cheap, but you can find some excellent
jazz/exotica (Quincy Jones, Kenny Burrell, Martin Denny) in there for $7-8.
It's all right around the corner from Jack's and Groove.

Saturn Records in the East Bay has by far the best collection for Exoticats
(they basically coined the term Now Sound).  But it's priced for collectors.
Still worth it just to slaver over the ultra rare items.  You can find deals
there too.  Take BART to Rockridge Station.  There's a nice food market,
restaurants in the area, and a good new/used bookstore as well.

Aquarius Records in the Mission has forged a niche market for themself
digging into all the ultra rare recordings.  Lots of krautrock, tropicalia,
and all that spacey droney indie stuff floating around now.  Very
knowledgeable staff.

 Cool and strange music did a spread on SF record stores not long ago - but
 it's not on the site.

 On Haight and Stanyan street, catch Amoeba Music, which took over Park Bowl
 a few years ago.  Huge inventory and lots of vinyl at reasonable prices.
 Selection can be hit and miss if you adding to an established collection.

 A few blocks down, near Masonic is Recycled Records, but I often leave there
 empty hand.  It's pricier and the selection is smaller.

 Further down even still, in the lower haight (around Fillmore) is Groove
 Merchant, famous for its archive of old soul and funk records.

 Up a block on Page and Scott is Jack's Record Cellar, but the specialty here
 is 78s - there are thousands and thousands of them.  I was thrilled to find
 an entire box of whistling records here.  Including several Fred Lowerys,
 some on his very own Lowery Records label!

 Not too far away is Open Mind Music (342 Divisidero), which I had never been
 to, but hear carries some kitsch and exotica.

 On Market street (it's a long street) is Grooves, but they are pricey.  In
 North Beach on Green and Grant is 101 Records, which is packed floor to
 ceiling with instruments and stereo equipment.  Check out the basement for
 who knows what you may find.  Not recommended for scores, but well worth
 visiting as a curiosity after your italian lunch and cappuccino.

 If you make it to just north to Mill Valley, there is Village Music, which
 has a huge selection of "pop and nostagila"

 Berkeley has another Amoeba and Rasputins within a block of each other on
 colorful Telegraph ave.

 And you've been to Big Al's Record Barn in San Jose, right?

 I'm sure there are a number I have overlooked, but that's a start.  San
 Francisco is very small in area and has an excellent transportation system.
 The best weather is in October.  Familiarize yourself with Muni or just
 bring some good walking shoes and you are in business.  First time visitors
 are amazed at the steep hills.

He's one of the wildest DJ's I have ever heard.  Manical laughing and all

P.S.  Yes, I have gone to Big Al's Record Barn (betcha there's ONE South
Park episode their staff must hate!) and I met the most exalted lister Ron
Grandia, neither of whom I will be able to see for lack o'transport,
dagnabbit.  BARB is where I got, thanks to Ron a wonderfully off-kilter
Jack LaLanne exercise record and "Beggin" by Timebox, which is awful
rare.  The problem I had with the store was the daytime fellow.  Outside of
his propensity for eating peanuts and talking to me at the same time, he
realized that I knew what I was after and started changing prices on
me.  Frankie say, "Grrr...".

I was a sucker for the same crap when I was a kid. I had every Rick
Wakeman, Synergy, and Tomita album. There was a Tomita album based
on Prokofieff's Classical Symphony too I believe. I still have all
my "kid records" in the back of my stacks somewhere. Someday, Yes
solo albums, Anthony Phillips and Gentle Giant are gonna be worth
BIG BUCKS! (Yeah, right...)

The Prokofiev "covers" are on Tomita's "The Bermuda Triangle"
its very much a spaceships/aliens concept album.

I've just dig my pile out of the basement to check =)
I have a pile of these I picked up when I started collecting MOOG LPs
(the MOOG LPs are in the House these have migrated to the basement in
subsequent purges)

He also did a (imho BAD) attempt at an exotica standard: Andersons
"Syncopated Clock" on the "Grand Canyon" LP...

Related to digging these out does anyone have any ideas on how to
safely store records in less than ideal conditions. ie. Slightly damp
basement (apart from installing temperature control)

I'm told you can buy buckets of silica gel type stuff at boat stores
that
absorb moisture from the air. Anyone tried this?
I have the records up off the ground and on shelves but I can still
detect the faint smell of mouldy records.
Maybe wrapping the records in big plastic bags and sealing them?

I want to second Jonny's gratitude for the posting of the Honey West
soundtrack.  I've been enjoying it all week.
    I hadn't been record thrifting in a while, but on Friday I managed to
come up with a nice batch, all for between .50 and 1.00:

Dick Hyman--The Man from O.R.G.A.N.
    One of the classic albums that I'd wanted for a long time.  I like it a
lot, but to be honest, I think that I've listened to Electrodynamics and
Fabulous enough times that this album doesn't stand out so dramatically for
me as I had hoped.  In some ways, I like the other album by Dick Hyman I got
in the same bunch even more:

Dick Hyman--"Mirrors"  Made when Command was already bought by ABC.  Here
Hyman sounds more like he's playing a Hammond than a Lowrey (sp?).  I
couldn't tell from the notes, however, whether there had been a change.

Hugo Montenegro--Boogie Woogie + Bongos.
    I'm not much into "boogie woogie," but the lineup has all of the Command
and Time stars, and if anything can pick up Tuxedo Junction or Woodchopper's
Ball, it's a bongo and a Hugo Montenegro arrangement.  Of course, it's still
boogie woogie.

Harry Lubin Orch.--Music from One Step Beyond.
    Creepy music to put the jitters in you.  Most of it's pretty
straightforward orchestral stuff, but tracks like "Fear" and "Weird" are
good.

Don Costa--Echoing Voices and Trombones
    This is an awesome album.  I had no idea what a gem I was missing, but
this record has a great combination of swinging brass and wordless
vocalizing worthy of Esquivel.  The arrangements aren't quite as over the
top, but this is damn fine stuff.

Astrud Gilberto and Walter Wanderley--A Certain Smile A Certain Sadness.
    I already had a lot of these tunes on a Walter Wanderley compilation CD,
but adding new tunes to the collection is always a plus.  I'm not sure I
could ever have too much W.W.

Living Brass Play Songs Made Famous by Tom Jones
    This one has its moments.  The version of "Promise Her Anything" is flat
and uninteresting, but there's a zippy version of "Thunderball" here, and
"What's New Pussycat?" has a wa-wa guitar in it that makes me think of
Vinnie Bell.

Manos Hadjidakis--Topkapi OST
David Carroll--Let's Dance Again!
Larry Elgart--New Sounds at the Roosevelt
Al Cohn and the Zoot Sims Quintet--You'n Me
Dennis Farnon--Caution! Men Swinging
Percy Faith--Bim, Bam, Boom!

Ruben Leon--A Thinking Man's Cha Cha Cha
    This one's on the "Craftsmen" label.  The album's no great shakes
relative to other cha cha albums, but it does mention a "Scatman Crothers"
album on the back.  Anybody heard one by him?  Isn't he the fellow who "got
the axe" in The Shining?

Henry Mancini--Gaily, Gaily OST
    Thumbs down.  I've gotten spoiled by all of the other Mancini
soundtracks, and I figured that, despite the fact that the movie looked
pretty stupid (starring Beau Bridges), the music might be worthwhile.  I've
only listened to side 1 so far, but it doesn't hold out much hope for the
other side.

And I couldn't pass up Parliament Live, P.Funk Earth Tour.

I always wanted this one too and managed to finally get most of the tunes
on one of those double best-of's that all have the same cover.  I agree
that in the end, even though the tunes have cool "spy jazz" names, they're
actually not superior to the rest of the Dick Hyman material out there.  As
long as it's organ.  Even Dick cannot elevate the piano trio for me.

I had the same trepidation about this record.  Boogie woogie.  Oh no.
But I've never heard a record quite like this.  I think it's something
about the sound of the drums.  The musicians may be the usual suspects but
this is a much more raw sound than anything they did on Command anyway.
It's just one of those very rare records that almost defies genre.
It sort of reminds me of this Ernie Freeman record "Limbo".  I don't like
limbo either but this record was unto itself, something special.
I purged hundreds of lounge and exotica records but I kept those two just
because there was nothing else quite like them.

I think you could.  I love what Walter does but he really doesn't change it
up much.  I know it's in the ear of the behearer.  But since you started
this with Dick Hyman, it's an interesting comparison.  Dick has a million
little tricks and while it's true, that he usually throws a half million of
them into each of his tunes, I think from cut to cut he sounds a lot more
varied than Walter.

It was hard to choose what records to get rid of when it came to Walter.
They all had a couple of things I loved.  It was a bit easier to decide to
keep one of his early pre-America records because that did sound a bit
different.  And I kept one of his later ones where he throws in a bit of
synthesizer.  But all those middle period ones, I just flipped a coin and
tossed a couple.

This is not their best record but I agree that those two cuts are right up
there. I also like "It's not unusual" and they actually elevate a tune I
otherwise hate, namely "Delilah".

He was way more than that.  I don't remember his history but I do know he
was a singer and a performer at some point.  I always assumed that's where
the "scat" in Scatman came from.  He was also a very charming man.  He
actually took me out for my birthday about twenty years ago.
(I was driving him on a really bad film.  It's not like we were hanging out
per se but that night we did.)

I agree.  A disappointment.  I was hoping that the hippy nature of the film
would put this in the category of "The Party" but it's not even good
compared to your run of the mill Mancini.

By the way, over the years lots of people on this list have complained
about these recent find posts.  More than anything else.  As if to say
"what do I care what YOU found if I can't go out and get it myself?"
But this was the way I learned about this stuff when I first got into it
and joined the list at the same time.
I've never understood the antipathy towards those posts.

Anyway I'm glad someone's still doing it.  If I still went to thrift
stores, I would too.

And you didn't mention anything about that David Carroll record you got but
I've never heard a bad one by him.
Even the mediocre ones have amazing tunes. Is that the one with "Blue
Blazer" on it?   If so, congratulations.

i NEED a still of that shot.
i love the scatman although i only have a few kinda lame cuts by him i got
off of a
cheesy later years Cab Calloway/Scatman Crothers comp.
the best thing i have heard him do so far is the theme song to movie
Coonskin or Streetfight
by Ralph Bakshi where all you see is the profile of his face during the
opening credits singing and strumming out the song.  Very Un-PC but a
powerful, smokin' cut.

i would love to hear more of his stuff.
always loved him as an actor.

I've heard there are two versions of this - or maybe it's Let's Dance.   The
"regular" one and another that features - here I go again - whistling by
Elmo Tanner.  Tanner's name appears on the front cover down near the dancing
girl.
