There are no notes of any kind on the reel-to-reel version I got, which is
titled "Exotic Percussion" (Crown ST 115 - confusing, isn't it?). I'd be
interested in any other documentation - personnel, recording dates etc. -
which the vinyl album might provide.

The short lived show ran on ABC in from 1965-66. Honey West first appeared
on an episode of Burke's Law. It was 1965, and the world was going spy
crazy. There was James Bond, The Avengers and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. Honey
was played by Anne Francis, drop dead gorgeous, and a dead ringer for Honor

Timbales
Finger Cymbals
Sleigh Bells
Bongos
Conga Drum
Bass Drum
Xylophone

Cow Bell
Side Drum
Hope this helps, theres also lots of cool Exotic stuff about each individual
song
for example, the song "Maika" sez: "The moonlight in Maika's eyes was
responsible for the entrancing birth of the night blooming Cereus"
i dont know why they left all this cool stuff and made the cover so boring
when they called exotic percussion, i guess they were just amping on the
percussion craze going down at the time, whereas Kapu was getting in on the
Exotica craze. Got the markets cornered over there at Crown. I guess they
were stretching the buck a bit. As far as recording dates, I havent a clue,
doesnt say anywheres on either LP. But if you write to them at:
Crown Records
9317 W. Washington Blvd
Culver City, California
I bet they would give you all the info you ask for. Good luck

Colleen, look here for more info:
http://tralfaz-archives.com/coverart/T/Tomita/tomita_snowflakes.html
The guy's full name is Isao Tomita. Some more info at:
http://www.japanorama.com/tomita.html
Don't confuse him with Yann Tomita, who's very hip in Japan at the moment
(and whose records I like much much better!)

Aloha all-
Thanks for your enthusiastic response to our new
release. We're a bit crazy this week, wearing many
fezes... artists, label, promoters, publicity. Next
week we will update our list and get promos out for DJ
requests like Domenic's, so make sure we have all the
appropriate mailing info. we will also try to do any
station i.d.s (like Cheryl has requested many times,
patiently), let us know what to say, station-wise. For
those who want to buy the CD, hopefully our
distributor will hook it up at Amazon and other
cyberstores if it's not available at your town's
favorite shop. Again, mahalo for your patience and
support!

At 05:43 PM 10/03/2001, Alan noted :

My old copy being one of them out there in circulation, perhaps. Back in
the early/mid-70s I was an easy mark for any albums featuring synthesizers.
Unfortunately, it being the early/mid-70s, that usually meant slushy prog
rock related stuff (yet more unfortunately, it being the early/mid-70s, I
thought that was just dandy). Born a wee bit too late for the more-fun,
earlier synth records. "Snowflakes Are Dancing" was Tomita's set of Debussy
covers. I think PBS has used it for as backing music on various things over
the years -- that "Star Hustler" astronomy filler show for one.
I had the first three Synergy albums. Well-made, but prog rock sensibilty
all the way. As someone noted, it was not a group, just Larry Fast doing
the overdub thing, with a little help here and there depending on the
album. To his credit, when I sent a letter to his contact address, he
actually sent a multi-page reply (not a form letter), patiently answering
my little synth-nerd tech questions (when I sent a letter to Tangerine
Dream, one of them sent me a stupid "don't break this chain!" chain letter,
so phooey on them on artistic and etiquette levels (yes, I broke it)).
Chuck mentioned Walter/Wendy Carlos' "Sonic Seasonings" and that's another
one I used to have. That one would be nice to still have around. Ambient
music on the abstract side, plus environmental sounds.
Chuck also pondered the earliest records weaving music and environmental
sounds (Mystic Moods Orchestra, etc) -- don't forget Esquivel's excellent
"See It In Sound" from 1960, even if it didn't see release until 1999.
Hmmm, would Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath" count?

to those who dropped me a line for putting up the honey west soundtrack,
thanks for your kind words. One had asked if there were others. No, this
is the only one. That takes up about 25MB of the 100MB of storage space my
provider gives me and its a pretty short LP. 50MB are set aside for
whistling tracks :)
So I'll have a new one maybe as often as once a week.
What made me do this was I wanted to start listening to my records at work
(I'm in front of a computer). As you know, an audio CD-R can only hold a
couple of complete record albums, but if you encode the wav files into MP3
files, you can put alot of albums onto a CD-R. The catch is that the CD-R
could only be played on a computer, not on your home stereo. I encoded
Honey West at 128, which is CD quality and the album took up 25MB of space.
there is 650MB on a CD, so I can easily put twenty records on one CD!
Thanks Roy :)
So that's what I'm doing. As I complete each LP, I'll be glad to share it
with you.
This is not rocket science - anybody with a CD burner in their PC should be
able to do this. It does not take any fancy setup - you should be able to
download what you need from the internet. Need help? Just ask!
Rob asked:

Hmmm...I'm not much of a trouble shooter. Can you play MP3's from other
sites? Can you hear Mr. Fodder's LP's at his Interstellar Cafe? Pick up a
streaming real audio? If you can, but can't hear mine, maybe I screwed up.

Back when Napster was working, this whole album was an easy-to-find
download. Have you tried Gnutella or something like that? I have the
record and like it... kind of. Don't know about Tomita's other stuff
though. This kind of stuff could easily veer in a very distasteful
direction.
BTW,
The Design Museum in London was using a snipet of this album in a multimedia
display about soap.
Good luck...

Not only is ebay a valuable resource for finding specific wants (like the
Zodiac Cosmic Sounds), it is also an excellent source for simply digging up
information about something that interests you. Or browsing pics of your
favorite toys from your childhood and saving the scans to your hard drive.
:)
Type the title or artist name into the search box and wait for the results.
Dependng on the seller, you'll get a description, label information, usually
a scan of the cover, a track list, etc, etc. You can also get a sense of
availability by the number of matches. Don't forget to view the "completed
items" for even more of a clue. Then take a look at what people have paid
for the item to give you even a sharper picture.
I just checked. I've heard of the record you asked about, but know nothing
about it. But by researching it on ebay, in a couple of minutes, I know:
it is available on CD and reel to reel tape
what the cover looks like
what Tomita looks like
the music is electronic performances of the music of Claude Debussy
the year it came out
the label it was on
that there will be no problem finding this recording
that it will be cheap (under $5)
Looking for records on the internet is such a (almost) daily habit for me,
that I just figured everybody else must be doing this too. But maybe not.

Does anyone know if the movie "The Young Interns" came out before "I Spy"?
I know I could look it up myself but you guys are so good at finding
answers online that I've become lazy about such things myself.
If you're wondering why I ask, it's because I bought the soundtrack to The
Young Interns and it's by Earle Hagen. And the theme music sounds almost
exactly like the theme to "I spy" which he also wrote.
I'm not complaining mind you (especially since I don't have "I Spy") but I
was just wondering whether he stole from I Spy for The Young Interns or
vice versa.
Oh and by the way, there's a tune on the soundtrack called "Young Interns
Watusi". And as you can well imagine, my heart started to beat quickly
when I saw that name. So I'm sure you can imagine how confused I was when
the tune, far from having a bunch of wailing saxes and organ, actually
sounded like some primitive exotic percussion piece.
Quel dommage.

Audiogalaxy.com is a good Napster replacement if anyone's interested

I've had a bunch of his stuff and the only ones I've kept are Snowflakes and

One he did about '74 had a terrific version of a then current "Don't You
Worry "Bout A Thing" that translated nicely into Brazilian mode..then
Rhodes-driven and funkified. (think Chick Corea, Airto Moriera/Flora Purim,
EMI "Crystal Silence", etc.)...I have found his 6T's stuff to be superior at
large, but of course certain notable exceptions exist through his '77
recordings...If its cheap enough..and it should be..grab it

favorite recordings, which happen to have been very popular sellers?
Two of mine that come to mind are Miles Davis "Bitches Brew" and
A.C.Jobim "Wave".

"Wichita Lineman" by Glen Cambell - a sweet piece of pie and a chart-topper
to boot. I'd even include "By Time I Get to Phoenix". So yeah, Jimmy Webb, a
popular seller but it strikes a creepy-yet
nostalgic-trailer-trash-truck-stop mental note with me.
There's lots of Burt Bacharach songs that were big sellers and one can't
help but love (they're too numerous to bother mentioning).
I won't mention my odd Led Zeppelin hankerings, it's just too embarassing.
ah one, ah two, ah one two three four!

1. Yma Sumac - Voice of the Xtabay. However it's pronounced, she had a
winner in this one.
2. Telstar - The Tornados (the opening sound is a jumble of things, one
which is rumored to be the sound of a toilet flushing reversed!)
3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service - John Barry. Mom, my brother and I all
dig this one.

I can't get enough of "The Look of Love" -- I'll snatch up anything that
has a version. Richard Hayman's moog exploration of that song on "Best
of Moog" CD comp is a recent happy discovery.

Subject: (exotica) How to beat the high cost of living (stereo)
The problem with record collecting is that it is not in any way like the
stock market: Buyers have little or no control over what they pay as most
stores do not solicit nor accept offers for their wares. Record dealers
seem to think that what a Japanese kid will pay for a bossa nova record
sets the price for all. Dealers also seem to exagerrate the number of
Japanese buyers.
Out-of-print vinyl is a collectible and collectibles are considered by
investment pros to be "an unliquid investment" especially during a
recession. I can't eat my collection, nor can I pay my bills with it,
easily transport it, nor protect it from casualty. Of course, ebay has
democratized the market somewhat.
I do not agree that vinyl is a commodity: Pork bellies, soy beans and
bushels of grain are commodities because each "unit" is essentially
identical and therefore buyers know exactly what they're getting. Whereas
each vinyl record (unless we're talking about a recently discovered
warehouse cache of 10,000 copies of The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart),
is completely unique unto itself. Title-wise and in the used market,
condition-wise. In fact, it is this singularity which makes the job of the
record company man so difficult. How can they possibly sell hundreds of
unique products with any degree of efficiency to a radio market, record
store, club deejay and average end user who craves (no, demands)
consistency? One solution is to produce records that sound nearly
identical. (Which may explain the enormous popularity of disco.)
Chuck, if cash is a commodity, I'll trade you 50 cents for each dollar in
your pocket. Deal? (Just send it over to my Paypal account and I'll
immediately refund 50%.)
Remember, cash and "monetary instruments" are legal tender,
coin-of-the-realm; there's nothing else like it (only precious metals come
close). Which is what makes money such a great gift! (Anyone wishing to
test this theory can donate to the aforementioned Paypal account.)
Obviously, it only makes sense to trade in currency if you're exchanging
one kind for another; and in that limited sense, cash *is* a commodity, but
I don't think that was what you meant.
The "curious statement" you attribute to me was made by Alan Zweig. And
"whining" is my middle name.
Chuck: What you refer to as "distortion" is merely a part of a much larger,

Cool and strange music did a spread on SF record stores not long ago - but
it's not on the site.
On Haight and Stanyan street, catch Amoeba Music, which took over Park Bowl
a few years ago. Huge inventory and lots of vinyl at reasonable prices.
Selection can be hit and miss if you adding to an established collection.
A few blocks down, near Masonic is Recycled Records, but I often leave there
empty hand. It's pricier and the selection is smaller.
Further down even still, in the lower haight (around Fillmore) is Groove
Merchant, famous for its archive of old soul and funk records.
Up a block on Page and Scott is Jack's Record Cellar, but the specialty here
is 78s - there are thousands and thousands of them. I was thrilled to find
an entire box of whistling records here. Including several Fred Lowerys,
some on his very own Lowery Records label!
Not too far away is Open Mind Music (342 Divisidero), which I had never been
to, but hear carries some kitsch and exotica.
On Market street (it's a long street) is Grooves, but they are pricey. In
North Beach on Green and Grant is 101 Records, which is packed floor to
ceiling with instruments and stereo equipment. Check out the basement for
who knows what you may find. Not recommended for scores, but well worth
visiting as a curiosity after your italian lunch and cappuccino.
If you make it to just north to Mill Valley, there is Village Music, which
has a huge selection of "pop and nostagila"
Berkeley has another Amoeba and Rasputins within a block of each other on
colorful Telegraph ave.
And you've been to Big Al's Record Barn in San Jose, right?
I'm sure there are a number I have overlooked, but that's a start. San
Francisco is very small in area and has an excellent transportation system.
The best weather is in October. Familiarize yourself with Muni or just
bring some good walking shoes and you are in business. First time visitors
are amazed at the steep hills.
Tell us how you did when you get back.
