That ad music record with Dean Elliot, etc. does sound great. Just how
did the store classify it (I have to keep my eyes peeled for it)?
I am also envious of the Ruth Wallis record, as I am TRYING to find all
her stuff.... I'm glad it found a good home (or should that be vice versa?).

In a panel game said to be the antidote to panel games, "I'm Sorry, I
haven't a clue", the panelists were asked to come up with songs that would
be a hit with the medical profession. Some titles were:
Yes Sir, That's MY Baby!
Lipstick On Your Colon
Dr., NO!
and
Knees up, Mother Brown
I agree with Hugh that the actual meaning sounds like a dancing reference.
Now, whats an " 'Ow's your Father"?

Hi gang,
I passed up 2 rekkids this weekend by a band named something like The
Pineapples. Wonderful cover art if you like scantily clad
pseudo-Hawaiian women.
They were too moldy for my stylus, but the pix were nice. Any idea
about this band? One of the albums were titled simply "Hawaii"
Oh yea...scored Nelson Riddle's "Sea of Dreams" for a buck...

Whoa! I'm a mite surprised that the "Jungle Exotica" comps
have gotten the "thumbs up" from a few. I like the strip stuff
but I guess I'm a little more demanding when it comes to
"schmaltz" - so many of those songs are nothing but a few
bars of catchy rhythm repeated over and over and over and
over........of course, there are a few gems in the pile, I love
"Yes Master" from "Jungle 2" and some of this stuff makes
great background music for answering machines......
Anyway, to each his own, glad people enjoy these comps so
much.......

Thanks to all you who posted info about great accordionists. Forwarded the
messages to my brother, a piano player who just got two accordions and is
exploring the music and the instrument. He's grateful for the info and so
am I.
Can any exotica/Hawaiian music enthusiasts recommend records that feature
slack key guitarists in a group? Am besotted with Gabby Pahanui (sp?). Did
he record with any bands under other names or were all his records recorded
under his name? Too often Sputnik Era Hawaiian LPs do not name the
individual artists--a woeful oversight.
Also wanted to say I agree with Jessica's assessment of Ros' "Rhythms of
the South." A lackluster record, although the rumba arrangement of "Col.
Bogey March" (you know, whistled in the movie "Bridge Over the River Kwai")
is good for a smirk.
Sorry if there are errors here--am writing from work, separated from my
beloved vinyl!

I think it was Jessica that mentioned a Hawaiian album that consisted
of unusually non-Hawaiian song covers... anyway, in this context the
names of "The Big Ben Hawaiian Band" and also "Basil Henriques and the
Wakiki Islanders" should be mentioned, as they both churned out
several such items, on EMI Studio 2, and Polygram. I therefore have
two Hawaiian versions of "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly", along with
stuff like "Je T'Aime", "It's Not Unusual", and suchlike popular
fare. Stoopid enough that I stick them on once in a while for laughs.

god i hate to do this...
i must agree (sort of) with Jack (shudder). i believe there is a Brit
expression "having a knees up" which means a gathering at a pub after work.
sort of like a happy hour as in "Let's drop by the Fawn & Firkin for a
knees up." most likely it comes from sitting in the chairs or booths at
pubs as many do not have bar stools...
just a theory...

Yes! And George is one SCARY looking man, too.
Hang onto those seeds--My copy came with a wrapper band saying that one
free packet of seeds was included with the original kit. There was a yellow
instruction booklet which goes into more detail about the kooky theory
involved, saying that sound of one particular shrill pitch was found to
irritate the stoma cells of plants into staying open longer, so the plant
transpires more. The key word here is "irritate"!
. . . The music was identified as being by "Corelli-Jacobs" if that means
something to anyone--I figured it was just perky library music from
somewhere.
Does anybody else have a weakness for other quack science records? I have
one called the "Spectrum Suite" where some Palo Alto groovoid noodles
around making spacey music, which an incomprehensible graph on the back
"proves" has a beneficial effect on people's brainwaves.
>Tom Glazer and Dottie Evans: Space Songs from Ballads for the Age of

That was me. . . it's the "Singing Science" series--and I'm insanely
jealous you got the "Space" one. Watch out, those little ditties are
*dangerously* infections, I've been singing their Kinetic Energy tango to
myself for weeks. . .
Tangntially related: I just picked up that Bell Labs _Music From
Mathematics_ 10". . . Eat your hearts out, retro-synth fans: this one goes
ALL the way back to the punch-card era. It has one of those "Doctor
Science" type narrators, and all the pieces are *really* short--maybe not
too surprising, when every minute of music required 20 minutes of processor
time on Ma Bell's million-dollar IBM 704 mainframe. Some of the pieces get
into an agreeably jerky Sci-Fi kind of feeling, but musically it's nothing
to get too excited about.
Remembering the smell of punch tape,

They do indeed still exist.
You can e-mail them at radio@yesteryear.com or video@yesteryear.com and ask
for a catalog. They sell many many old radio shows on cassette, and are now
also burning their own CDs for some of their stock. They have everything
from a Richard Diamond Xmas show to the Dragnet "Tijuana Bible" show. For $2
they'll search their large database for every instance of a show or
performer. Their prices can go up to the $12/hr. range, but they have lots
of specials. Inquire about their Stack o' 78s tapes!

When did Bobby Maxwell grow up and become Robert? I've got a few 45s at home
by Bobby Maxwell and his Swinging (?i think?) Harps. Did he ever release any
LPs as "Bobby"?

I just put a couple more Edmondo records on the recycling pile. One of them
is "Arriba" a Phase 4. Of the 20 or so Edmondo's that have passed through
here, I've only kept four so far. And even those that survive, do so
mostly because of the cover or because I guess I prefer tepid versions of
60's tunes - like "United We Stand" - to tepid versions of older standards.
Borderline cases like Edmondo kind of bug me. No matter how many of them I
ultimately reject, I can never quite leave them sitting there. And when I
play them, they're hard to judge. I never feel completely right about
"taking them back" - like I did with "Rhythms of the South" - but I never
quite bond with them either. Sometimes I wish I was back at the beginning
of this exotica journey where I kept everything because I was so glad to
find anything.
What's the story with Edmondo anyway? I'm sure people will jump to his
defense but he's no Cugat or Prado. I even prefer the Arthur Murray (Noro
Morales) cha cha records and a lot of the totally generic ones turn out to
be hotter than Edmondo too.
I guess maybe Edmondo's not about "hot". But boy was he prolific.

Filed records in junk stores make me nervous anyway--it usually means
they're looking to gouge you, and besides: alphabetizing takes all the
mystery out of the hunt!

This is probably old news to most of you, but...
While wading through the seemingly endless selection of "Ultra Lounge" CDs
this weekend, I discovered:
Mel Henke: La Dolce Henke (Scamp)
Words cannot describe how amazing this record is. All I can say is, if
there's anyone else around here that doesn't have it yet for whatever
reason, run out and get it!!

The correct name for this fantastic group is: "Ganimian & His Oriental Music"
pray you find their rare LP someday.

I'll saw your legs right off,

Ow's yer farver? All right!
(last line is cockney for How's your father?). I'm not sure I can take on
board
Jack's idea of knees up against the bar, since in cockney pubs most people
would have sat at a table, or stood at the bar. Knees up is much more
likely to
do with dancing.

Are you guys kidding? Granted it's sappy and there are some silly
parts, but I wouldn't give it a complete thumbs-down. The party scenes
are particularly entertaining. Also, I'm more comfortable pairing
Audrey with George Peppard than with the distinguished but
too-old-for-her Fred Astaire (in "Funny Face"). Really the only problem
I have with BAT is the ridicoulous racist portyal (by Mickey Rooney in
false teeth etc.) of the upstairs landlord.
- -Jordana
P.S. One of my favorite parts (even though she's a better actress and
muse than a singer) is when Audrey sings "Moon River," and that _isn't_
on the soundtrack. So there :)
