Well all in all dear girl, how many of them were hammered ?
There were a few standouts, at least for me:)
You're wrong about that Kenyon Hopkins Lonleyville, The Nervous Beat LP
But then again you do say you don't like Jazz:-)AND you are young
>Music from Building a Better Way: the 1974 Chevrolet Annoucement Film--The
>title is self-explanatory, but the music is classic 70s stuff, heavy on
>moog, fuzztone guitar, and ba-ba-ba vocals. There are a few cruddy country
>style tracks, but most of it is great.
I just "previewed" this for my show for tomorrow morning. There are a
*few* good things but I certainly would not go so far as to say that MOST
of it is GREAT, but, I forgive you:^)
>The "In" Sound for the Commercial Industry: Compilation for the Charles H.
>Stern ad agency with a roster that reads like a space age/exotica hall of
>fame: Mel Henke, Dean Elliot, Jack Fascinato, Les Baxter, and Nelson Riddle!
>Henke's theme for the Chevrolet Jet Smooth ride is an instrumental version
>of "Woman in Space"! And as a bonus we get a few seconds of "Zounds! What
>sounds!" after Elliot's jingle (which is great). Baxter's is less
>interesting. it's more of a folk thing. Riddle does a great jingle for
>Shasta cola (it hasta be shasta). What a record! ^_^
You are right on the money on that 1. I got that rekkid and it IS great
>Let's Get Away from it All by Robert Maxwell--Even cooler than "A Song for
>all Seasons." This one has a lot going for it: Lois Winter on wordless
>vocals (isn't she the voice on Marty Mannings' Twilight Zone LP?),
You mean wordless ethereal vocals ? No, that's Lois Hunt, without looking:)
It seems that EVERYONE wants that Organ-Ized LP by Walter Wanderly, except
me, only god knows why "they" want it
"They" all probably read it somewhere like "Incredibly Strange Music" or
something where "they" all got the same lists of stuff "they" all GOTTA HAVE
A few good ones in your batch, at least for me, fun reading:-)
Thanks!
Jack

So if I want it, am I "they"? What if I just like Walter Wanderley? What
if I just like organ? What if I have no taste of my own and want
everything that I see on a list? What if I read that some guy named jack
says it's "killer" and I automatically think "I want that"?
What if I want it simply because I don't have it?

Got a 12" from my brother this afternoon called "Acid Brass" (on Blast
First, 1997) Or in full: Jeremy Deller presents Acid Brass. All tracks are
performed by the Williams Fairey Brass Band and they are covers of well
known dance/house songs like Voodoo Ray (A Guy Called Gerald), Pacific State
(808 State) and What time is Love? (KLF). Awesome! There seems to be a whole
CD of this stuff released, anyone knows the tracklist of that one?

Subject: (exotica) Playlist for The Single Eye with comments (March 29, 1998)
The Single Eye can be heard every Sunday at 4pm on CKUT 90.3 fm in
Montreal, Canada.
The James Taylor Quartet: Austin's Theme "Creation"
+ I was wary of later JTQ releases, but I was wrong. This release from 1997
is filled with great funky instros, including the themes for Starsky &
Hutch & Dirty Harry.
Receiver: Intro "Chicken Milk"
+ this cut features (what sounds like) a 60's radio jingle "First we take a
groovy record & add a super-sound DJ..."
Tim 'Love' Lee: Incense "Confessions of a Selector"
+ plenty of drones & old disco samples.
Peter Thomas: Readheads "100% Cotton"
Peter Thomas: High Crime "100% Cotton"
+ the recent double cd released by the Crippled Dick label. It features the
soundtracks to the Jerry Cotton series of films. Many of these crime-tunes
are very short (under 1 minute) so are ideal for dropping into the mix.
What's this about Mr. Thomas recording with Combustible Edison?
Portishead: All Mine "Portishead"
+ moody, noir-ish songs. One track even features a theremin.
Freedom Power: Dopping 2000 "Stroboscopica- sonorizzazioni psycho beat"
+ the cover sez "Italian 70's psychedelic b-movies soundtracks &
sonorizations". I can't get enough of this material.
The James Taylor Quartet: Man of Mystery "Creation"
Quincy Jones: Peter Gunn "Crime Jazz - Music in the first degree"
+ from the two volume set on Rhino.
The Jesters: Peter Gunn Twist "Las Vegas Grind Pt.1"
+ released by Strip Records. Despite what some have said on this list, I
think this is an outstanding series.
The Dragons: Elephant Stomp "Frolic Diner Pt 2"
New Albanian Riots: Teenage Conflict "The Cream of the Stars"
+ in the classic guitar-instrumental style. Their website can be found at:
www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/underground/6154
Dick Dale & the Del Tones: The Victor "Revenge of the Surf Instrumentals"
+ a nice selection of tracks on this comp, but be advised that the total
playing time is only 28 minutes.
The Sentinals: Exotic "Wild Surf!"
+ this is more like it. 55 minutes of surf instrumentals. Released by
Delfi.
The Tiki Tones: Island Uprising "Idol Pleasures"
+ this band is real listener fave.
Ganimian & his Orientals: Come with me to the Casbah "Jungle Exotica"
+ absolutely wild & rockin'.
Uli Trepte: Psylomobil "Real Time Music
+ former member of Guru Guru, Neu, Faust & Spacebox. On this recording the
featured instruments are bass, sax & percussion thereby creating a very
cool beat-jazz flavour. Released by ATM records in Germany.
Pasquale Castiglione: Games "Scoctopus"
Comments & questions welcome
Cheers,
Allan.

Hello, my name is mike and I am a phonoholic. I've
been clean for 12 hours now.....
I've been reading the digest for about a month now, and have found it to be
very fun/informative; especially the "score lists". Is there a guide out
there to thrifts around the country? Also, I was wondering if anyone knew
anything about a few LPs I've found recently......
LES BAXTER - "Born Again" (OST) - 1978(!?) on "Lion and Lamb" label....
this one was still sealed, so i haven't opened it yet (I'm afraid it
probably sucks).
SI ZENTNER & ORCH - "Exotica Suite" - 19..? on "Liberty Premier"
label....nice 1/2 gatefold cover (with a piece of burlap glued to it!!)"The
exotic sounds of Martin Denny, composed by Les Baxter, arranged by Bob
Florence. What was Denny's role on this ? (It's WONDERFUL, btw.....big band
exotica)!
THE WINNERS - "Checkered Flag" - 19..? on Crown...Drag racing music with
alot of great sound effects and song titles like Stick Shiftin', Drop That
Flag, Cops and Rodders...Anyone know anything about them?
Thanks,
mike Pb

Seeing the recent discussion of harpists, accordions, etc., I can't resist
plugging a recent addition to the Space Age Pop website:

Includes performers on harp, bagpipe, ukulele, harpsichord, whistling, and
zither.
Just Squeeze Me: Accordionists

Also, re: the recent question about "Jungle Fantasy." I believe the
flautist that was written for was Esai Morales, brother of Noro, while he
was with Xavier Cugat. Esai Morales can be seen in the nightclub scenes in
the Burt Lancaster/Robert Siodmak film noir, "Criss Cross," one of my faves.

hmm, not with much enthusiasm, although their albums all contain
some really good stuff, especially covers ("fire" on "squeeze this")
their best one i've heard is a tape "vongole fisarmonica" with
"also sprach zarathustra", "stairway to heaven", "perry mason

The correct name for this fantastic group is: "Ganimian & His Oriental Music"
pray you find their rare LP someday.

A few issues back, Film Score Monthly (Vol. 2, No. 4 - June 1997) ran an

* Alexander Laszlo's Forbidden Island (Atlantis in Hi-Fi)
* David Livingston's Hawaiian Eye
* Henry Manicini's The Hawaiians
* Ennio Morricone's Oceano and Dedicato al Mare Egeo
* Alex North's South Seas Adventure
* Piero Piccioni's Bora Bora

To bring the two threads together, in ireland accordion albums are BIG
in the charity shops and to be avoided at all costs. The full piano
accordion is much used in mainland Europe but is totally unsuitable to
Irish/Scottish music. Button accordion (like a bandoneon) is a folk
instrument that can really rock, current media fave is Sharon Shannon,
but it's really a live thing for me.
As well as Astor check out Ivo Papasov's Bulgarian Wedding band (they
have stuff on Rykodisk), mad arabic influenced Eastern European folk
jazz with a touch of Carl Stalling, set to impossible polyrhythms. Ivo
is a virtuoso clarinettist but his accorionist is damn hot too. I also
have a fondness for Les Negresse Vertes, though their musical pedigree
is nothing like astor or Ivo.

Then there is "They Live" directed by John Carpenter. "They" are very scary
& to be avoided at all costs.
Allan (who has worried about THEM for years).

I thought that "the they people" was a film some guy on the list was
working on about all the people - "they" - who want bad records simply
because they read about them in RE/SEARCH's "Incredibly Strange Records"
volumes.
All the people who have no taste of their own and just rely on other people
for their taste.
I thought the tagline for the film was "The they people. BECAUSE THEY WANT
TO BE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE".
And I was under the impression that the sequel was about people who listen
to New Country.
Am I mixed up?
Can't remember the name of the guy who was working on that film.

Jeez, nobody mentioned the Jimi Hendrix of Accordion, Steve (Esteban) Jordan.
Played his stuff with technique that Carl Finch considers to be roughly a
light-year ahead of Flaco. Great songwriter ("Oaxaca" being a tender ode to
that region's fine green-bud), wild man (eye-patch, stabbed in more than a few
bar fights) and played his squeeze through a fuzzbox. (anybody a fan of
steel-guit player Lloyd Green, who also played his Sho-Bud through a fuzzbox?)
Also, nobody mentioned the multi-talented David Hidalgo whose accordion
playing on Tom Waits' "Cold Cold Ground" defines swing and soul in purely
instrumental terms.

Naturally! "They" are noted for their cruelty, after all "They Shoot
Horses, Don't They?" (1969)

That ad music record with Dean Elliot, etc. does sound great. Just how
did the store classify it (I have to keep my eyes peeled for it)?
I am also envious of the Ruth Wallis record, as I am TRYING to find all
her stuff.... I'm glad it found a good home (or should that be vice versa?).

Subject: (exotica) Swingin' Miss D
Looks like I now have accumulated more than two hours of Caravan
performances with an EmArcy album I picked up today MG 36104 called "The
Swingin' Miss D." HOWEVER, it did not come
with the cover, so I had to rely only on the label. I don't know who Miss
D. is and
she has to be the vocalist on this version of Caravan. I know that Quincy
Jones and His Orchestra is doing the rest of the work. Does anyone know
who Miss D. is?
BTW, EVERY version of Caravan I have seems to do a different take on it.
It is amazing how this tune can change so much and still be the same!
Two other versions were found on 45s:
The Mulcays and their Electric Harmonicas Coral 9-60578
Joe Valino (vocal) with George Siravo and his Orchestra Vik 4X-0226
On LP:
Vincent Bell (guitar) with Charles Caelelo (a.& c.) The Best of Vincent
Bell Musicor MS 3192
Arthur Lyman taboo HiFi RS806, R806 and R806.
Yes, I got three copies of the Lyman album. The first I got (last week)
was when I had been
totally out of luck finding ANY copy of it. When I found it, I snagged it
for $5 (which is pricey for me). Despite the fact that it was in mono, I
was glad to have it. Today, however, I find a mono and stereo
version...getting both for 50 cents! Arg!
So far, I like EVERY version of Caravan I have come across, including one
by the male Ethyl Smith: Lenny Dee.
