Anybody know if either of these is available on video? With music this

Wahay!
Spotted today in the shops, *vinyl* editions of "Easy Project 2: House
of Loungecore" AND what appears to be a new reissue of J-J Perrey's
"Moog Indigo" (in fact this latter appears to _only_ be on vinyl...).
If this is news to anyone and they would like copies - get in touch!
There are also still vinyl copies of the first Easy Project floating
around.
Be hearing!

Good ol' Jack Diamond turned me on to the music of Seven Golden Men and it is
really great. Italian heist film which came out in 1965. Whistling,
wordless vocals...every track is as cool as cool can be. According to my
Leonard Matlin guide (which is a few years old), there is no video release of
it or it's sequel. No CD on the scores, either.

Subject: Seven Golden Men CDs
The soundtracks from "Seven Golden Men" and "Seven Golden Men Strike
Again" apparently DID come out on CD a few years ago. Both on CAM
Original Soundtracks (looks like an Italian label, though these releases
are Japanese).
"Seven Golden Men" is mastered in Dolby Surroundsound and contains music
from both the first film and its sequel (CAM 800-095).
"Seven Golden Men Strike Again" is exclusively music from the 1966
sequel, though it contains half a dozen tracks NOT on "Seven Golden Men"
(released in Japan by King Records NKCD 1091).
These came out in 1995 and 1993, respectively, and appear to be out of
print. A friend in Japan with whom I've been trading sent me mine.
They are cool beyond words. If anybody knows where to find the videos,
or if they're on video, please advise!

Esquivel first appeared on American TV in 1958, appearing on "The Pat Boone
Show". He played a solo piano version of "El Cumbanchero". His next TV
appearance was on "The Danny Kaye Show", probably in 1960. Kaye did a
comedy routine playing bongos, while Juan played "Jalousie". No tapes of
these are known to exist.
Lucky folks in St. Louis were able to watch Esquivel on TV and listen to
him and the orchestra he was conducting in stereo (if they had an FM stereo
radio) in 1960. This RCA sponsored broadcast, which was one of the first
stereo simulcasts, had Juan being called "Mr. Stereo" for the occassion. A
vocalist named Corrine Colvert sang on a number or two. (RCA, at the time,
was banking on the new stereo sound to replace rock and roll as the most
popular music, and Esquivel, according to people who were working around
him at the time, was being groomed as the "new" Elvis! And we all know how
*that* turned out.)
The Sights and Sounds of Esquivel! had two TV appearances. They appeared on
The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson in 1966, playing "Malaguena".
Unfortunately, NBC erased the majority of the late 60's tapes sometime in
the mid-70's. {Grrrrrrr...} Esquivel says it was an outstanding
pereformance, although after he saw the broadcast, he had to reprimand (and
probably fine) vocalist Maria Caruso for frowning on camera.
They were also on a local TV show in Seattle called The Jack (something)
Show. Juan cannot remember the host's last name. Anyone out there know?
This was around 1963/64. There are a number of photos of it in Juan's slide
collection, and the set is very cool looking. These slides were shown at
the BarNone parties in LA, San Francisco, Chicago and Austin last year.
Esquivel was appearing at a hotel in Seattle at the time, and this
television show was used to publicise those shows. Anyone who lived in the
Northwest in those days and can fill us in on this show, please do.
Esquivel also appeared in 2 Mexican films in 1957 : "Cabaret Tragico" and
"Locura del Rock & Roll" (The Madness of Rock and Roll), both of which are
shown periodically on late night TV by Televisa and Galavision. If anyone
has videotapes of these, please contact me. Thanks!
Br. Cleve
p.s. Ferrante & Teicher played their prepared pianos on The Ernie Kovacs
Show. I wouldn't be surprised if that, along with the Yma Sumac
performances and the Esquivel "videos", are released commercially in a
Kovacs package sometime, as the tapes certainly do exist.

this round digs a little deeper into the vaults. where as the first round
stuck mostly with the "hit" artists, capitol went a little left of field in
collecting for round two. the odds on faves are Crime Scene and Organs In
Orbit. from what was on the sampler, the sound quality remains impeccible
and if there is any criticism it would be the fact that capitol has started
repeating artists on the same collection. is it really necessary to have
two or three tracks for someone on the same disc? could they not have found
other artists to add instead? well, those decisions lay
elsewhere...needless to say...they still swing and will still be worth it!

Sequel (the guys who released the Easy Project 1 & 2) have also
rereleased John Schroeders 'Working in a Soul Mine' under the title
'Space Age Soul'. It's on vinyl and CD for 7.99 GBP on both formats. Not
a bad deal. And it's a pretty cool record.
Also worth looking out for - an album called 'Rare Brazil' a compilation
of...Rare Brazil stuff. Highlight - a version of Raindrop Keep Falling on
my Head played on a thing which I can't remember the name of. It's an
instrument which is generally used unpitched, but can (just) have a tune
played on it. Kind of like trying to play a tune on a saw, only it's less
pitched and harder to get out specific notes. It's something very special.

RE: the Les releases on Capitol
They are in fact going to release a very comprehensive volume which in my
myopic opinion will repel more Les fans than it will recruit.
Much of Les' stuff is heavily orchestrated and not the Martin Denny-style
Exotica or the Esquivelian antics that folks today desire. So instead of
getting a small, tight, listenable greatest hits we will most likely get a
bloated volume that is too much to digest for newer fans.
Even more of a travesty is that Les' personal savior in his last days -
Mister Skip Heller - who can be held 100% personally responsible for all the
interviews/press Les received shortly before his demise is NOT writing the
liner notes for this final release!!!

I, too, have this album. The label is Directional Sound, and there is at least
one other by this same aggregation on that label. The band is John Evans and
his Orchestra, all of whom, including John, were members of Francis Bay's Big
Band, otherwise known as the Bay Big Band. This is a Belgian swing orchestra,
very much dedicated to the swing band era ala Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller,
Artie Shaw, etc. They were associated with the Brussels World Fair (late 50's)
and released a long series of albums on the Omega label, each album dedicated
to the compositions associated with a particular swing band leader, be it Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey or what have you. I have one dedicated to the music of
Ted Heath, and quite frankly, it rocks! This group is quite excellent by jazz
standards (and any others), even if you don't particularly care for the person
whose compositions they are doing. The Omega label was an early proponent of
stereo, and their pressings, I have found, are amazingly good even after 36
years. The above mentioned Directional Sound release, as well as the other one
I have seen by this group, have liner notes by Nat Hentoff- the "jazz guy".
Don't pass these up!

Subject: Re: Those Exotic Beatles
of course the beatles and their incredible pop writing made it possible
for so many cool exotica, easy-listening, and experimental artists to
produce amazing covers (from the 101 strings to bongwater!) i have a tape
of these sorts of covers i'd love to trade for similar or a couple bucks.
