Subject: (exotica) L'Ambiance de Republique and "The Graduate"
Date: 01 Apr 1997 00:14:06 -0500 (EST)
Okay, Mrs. Robinson is the 1968 remnant of Cocktail Nation. Dustin Hoffman is
the "New" 1968 Revolutionary chasing the heiress by the pool and angsting
his way through "The Graduate". But in 1997, America still lacks historical
perspective as indicated by the writer who says "there is a whole new
generation of people who doesn't really care any more about the 60's
Generation Gap." Thirty years later it is still important to remember that
1968 was the
Era of the Viet-Nam Draft--not that any X-ers EVER had to face it-- but it
did destroy relationships between a couple of generations for many
years--some X-ers appear to have yet to learn the value of this. So when you
say no one cares anymore, remember....just because YOU may not care......and
just because the passing of time itself has allowed a certain detached irony
to be applied to SABPM and Lounge Music, the significance of the 6T's schism
isn't REALLY lessened--just not recalled by some. To me not caring about the
60's Schism is like not caring about the music you assert yourself as caring
about: It happened, it IS significant and you must honor it as well as SABPM.
One is no less significant that the other...Jimmy Botticelli/got discharged
from the Navy after claiming acid "flashbacks" and playing lounge music

Ack! I must say that the new Sympathy LP is good, but Odyssey is
superior in my opinion. The first half of Odyssey is purely brilliant
and the mood it evokes with it's eerie tones is unbelievable. To me,
the new Sympathy LP is great, but it's more like an out-takes album that
a flowing cohesive full-length. But that's me..

Apologies for my delayed reply to this one - I was away last week.
It honestly didn't occur to me that I was being rude, although I can see now
that I was. This was due to tired Friday night at work syndrome rather than
any malice. I didn't intend any malice at all. Anyone can do whatever they
want. I have no idea what I was talking about.
I understand this person being particularly sore at me since he just
recently gave me very good service when I bought a record from him.
So - Sorry. Momentary lapse etc...
Please accept my apologies

Very well said. I'm 40 years old. I got my first record player when I was
two. The importance of music in my life is second only to my family and
friends. When I was in my teens and 20s I was consantly trying to learn
more about it. I attempted to learn piano. I studied theory. Started my
LP collection. I lived it and breathed it. And the more my tastes
developed, the more of a snob I became (I was almost excluisvely listening
to jazz at that point). If the music you listened to wasn't cool, then
neither were you. Gradually I realized that the enjoyment of music is a
personal thing and at that point my tastes really opened up. The joy I get
now from some of my favorites is one of life's greatest gifts, whether it's
Coltrane's "A Love Supreme," "Come Softly To Me" by the Fleetwoods, Les
Baxter's "Tropicando" or Future Sound Of London's "Dead Cities." All four
can move me (albeit for different reasons).
My only point is this; if Kenny G, or Garth Brooks or whoever can elicit the
same feelings for someone else, who am I to disagree? While there's no need
to discuss them on the exotica list, there's no need to put them down either.

I saw her on this show and I must say, and I'm putting it mildly, she wasn't
very articulate. I thought she was either on drugs or not very intelligent.
She was soooooo boring. And I used to love her, especially when she used to
appear on the series, "Novak". She may have made a couple of "Room 22"
appearances also. Wasn't she also on "The Eleventh Hour"? I know Fabian was.

I'm writing to ask if any of you heard Joseph Lanza (author of Elevator
Music and more recently, a book on cocktails, the name of which escapes me)
on NPR last night? The interview was pretty good. Lanza tends to muse
a bit on possibilities, which can vary from insightful to stretching
it, but overall I enjoyed the little piece. Music was supplied by
Martin Denny and Julie London, whose voice he said was either lubed
by a Martini or two, or at least inspired the consumption thereof.
Any other opinions?

Lanza was right to name London as the classic *cocktail* singer, but please
don't confuse that with *torch* singing (which she also does but is not
great at). I would have liked him instead to play the revoltingly obvious
"Blue Martini" LP (with Plas Johnson) and to have railed against the evils
of vodka. But it was a fine segment, as always on NPR/ATC.
The sound driver for All Things Considered, BTW, likes Neil Young and helped
me move my leopard couch in his VW Microbus -- a vital contribution to a SABP.
Speaking of radio, here's Robert Mitchum ("Thunder Road") on WITH, stereo AM
1230, the station responsible for turning Baltimore on to rock and roll,
which us led to Frank Zappa, David Byrne, and John Waters. Buddy Deane, the
DJ whose TV dance parties were the setting in Waters' movie "Hairspray,"
recently returned to the station (joining equally popular successor Jack
Gale), BUT:
The station has just been bought by a 40-station Christian programming
outfit. Aaaarrrgghh! Deane et al are really funny, don't preach while
spinning the Revels, Rosie Clooney, and "Quiet Village" all together, and
really made me proud to listen to this oldies station.

attempted at least. I think all politicians are meglomanicacal
bozos...but during the Presidential election, my friends and I joked
that we'd vote for Bob Dole, because he wanted to "return to the good
old days." So we thought, if his campaign platform was to stock every
house with Baxter and Denny records and butterfly chairs, he'd have our
support. But we decided he was too square, and would probably supply us
with Ethan Allen and Ray Conniff.

Johan, there are other sources for Morricone cd's that are probably
cheaper. I don't know what Footlight's overseas sales policy is, but
they have quite a selection. I'm not sure if you meant above that
you don't like 'lucertola' or haven't heard it.... but I just got a
two-fer that's along the same vein of that one and 'verushka.' It
has soundtracks to two horror films, "giornata nera per l'ariete" and
"gli occhi freddi della paura." The first again features Edda
del'Orso's spooky wordless vocals (one track has her breathing in
short gasps throughout.. another has this very weird yearning
breathy pout singing of almost words - at least i don't think they
are real words, doesn't sound italian anyway) There's also a 70's
lounge-like tune. The second soundtrack is all instrumental...
lot's of nervous jazz (a little avant, a little crime/spy) and
collages of sound effects electronic and otherwise. Very worthwhile
if you're into the 'lucertola' or 'verushka' sounds.
If you do pick up some, please report to the list. There are so many
recent releases to choose from and it'd be nice to hear others'
opinions/descriptions.

Two LPs I'm offering 4sale -- didn't see the second listed by Johan.
Hugo Montenegro (RCA): Music from the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly...
Morricone (Virgin): Rampage
Rampage is pretty darn scary/chillling, a later one but haunting.

I have to urge anyone who wants a very interesting read to pick up "Elevator
Music" and "The cocktail"
"Elevator Music" is a discussion of all things (even SABPM) that at one point
or another have been either correctly or incorrectly derided by others as
"elevator music". Fascinating insights into Muzak, exotica, ambient and the
overall use of music as a mood controling medium.
"The Cocktail" discusses the influence of cocktails on society and it's
influences on books, films, music. life in general and vica versa.

Might I second the kudos for NPR star Joseph Lanza's work? His
books, "Elevator Music" and "The Cocktail," are superb social histories,
the former of a subject which, to my knowledge, has never been dealt with
in a serious, yet accessible, text. Both books mix history, pop culture,
high culture, and sociology in a really appealing way. And can that boy
write!
Lanza wrote the sidebars to the Esquire story that's received so
much ink on this list, and his writing ability and original sensibility
are on display there. I should also note that his most recent book, "The
Cocktail," is just out on shelves in paperback form. Go out and read!

A biopic of the Singing Nun would be worthy of an Ed Wood like movie if they
followed her through to the end of her life. She became aware of worldly
temptations (pot, mainly) and some egomania on her world tour. She became
intractable in the convent and was kicked out. She landed in San Francisco
where she went headfirst into the Sixties at their most concentrated. In the
70s, looking for work she hired herself out as a Nun-dominatrix (this is all
true, btw) with the fetching name Sister Mary, Quite Contrary. Her clients
included several members of the Bohemian Club (which despite its name, is an
enclave of very rich, Republican power-brokers from around the country -
though it's headquartered here in Northern California). She had a heroin
addiction, for which she was busted. Eventually she got off the white horse,
became enormously fat and moved back to Belgium where she died. Now *that's*
a life story.

You forgot the part where, in the seventies, she recorded a bitchin'
psychedelic version of The Lord's Prayer! Or maybe that was some other

they're all arranged excellent, in a classic, often quite nervous,
jazzy big band way; some arrangers' names: Michael Melvoin, Ralph
Carmichael, Jimmie Haskell;

Subject: (exotica) File under Lounge/Exotica
Date: 03 Apr 1997 10:13:57 -0800
I've co-produced a couple of "Cocktail" CD's that are coming out in
mid May from Varese Sarabande. Because of that, I spend some of my
free hours setting up "Lounge/Exotica" sections in CD stores across
L.A. (mostly Tower) so that the CD's will have sections to go into
instead of getting placed in the "Rock" or "Jazz" section. The
problem arises as to which artists to include in these new "Lounge"
sections.
I have all the regulars figured out (Esquivel, Denny, Combustible,
etc..) but there are these groups that I don't want to include
because I haven't heard them and I don't know what they sound like.
They include: "Blue Hawaiians", "Brave Combo" and others. There are
groups that are in a EZ comp. series like, "Mr. Z" and "Billy
Strange" that although may sound nice, aren't quite "Lounge". Lastly
there are artists that straddle the fence like John Barry, Quincy
Jones, etc.. that store owners refuse to believe have Lounge appeal.
Anyway, if any of you have comments or suggestions as to what less
known artists should definitely be included in the "Lounge"
sections, then PLEASE let me know. When the manager of one of the
stores asked me "Don't you think that Hendricks, Lambert & Ross
should be in the Lounge section", I looked at him with a blank face.
I don't know. I said I'd ask someone who had heard them. And that my
friends,.. is you.
Please e-mail me personally with any suggestions. Thanks.
Doug

Jack! Now you know that's Herbie Hancock, not Quincy.
Have you heard the bonus tracks included on the latest cd of this?
Is it worth getting if you already have the vinyl?

There is a contemporary instrumental surf band called the Blue
Hawaiians. They do a swell cover of "Penetration."

First, thanks for the replies to my Vegas query. Second, I bought the latest
Las Vegas Grind compilation and it's fabulous; if you liked the first two,
get this one. If you didn't like the first two.....WHAT? WHY NOT? Anyway,
there is as usual no info on any of the artists. Who are these people? Where
did they find these tracks? Is there anyone who has done articles on this
series? And has anyone heard Jungle Exotica #2?

Subject: (exotica) Allen Ginsberg has fatal liver cancer
Date: 03 Apr 1997 21:17:06 -0500 (EST)
I know this sorta celeb health update is usually Laura's gig, but...
-Lou
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 3, 1997--Wired News reports
today in an exclusive story that Allen Ginsberg, the author of the
groundbreaking 1955 poem "Howl," has been diagnosed with
hepatocellular carcinoma, cancer of the liver.
The cancer is untreatable, and the poet has "four to 12" months
to live, said his doctor, David Clain, of Beth Israel Medical Center,
in a statement sent to Wired News Thursday morning.
Ginsberg has had chronic hepatitis C for many years. The
hepatitis developed into cirrhosis, diagnosed in 1988, but the poet's
increasing fatigue and jaundice led to a biopsy last week, which
revealed the cancer. "Though the prognosis is fatal, this kind of
cancer is not usually characterized by pain," said Ginsberg's
assistant, Bob Rosenthal. The 70-year-old poet will receive hospice
care at his home in Manhattan until his death, Rosenthal says.
Ginsberg learned of the diagnosis as he completed work on his next
collection of poems, On Fame and Death. He is also working on his
third collection of photographs.
"Allen's weepy at times, but he's taking it like a good Buddhist.
He spent the whole weekend writing poems," said Raymond Foye, a
close friend of the poet. Rosenthal says that Ginsberg -- known for
his boundless energy -- has been bedridden since his diagnosis,
talking with old friends like Peter Orlovsky, the poet's lover for
four decades, and his Buddhist teacher, Gelek Rinpoche.
"When Allen wrote, 'America, I'm putting my queer shoulder to the
wheel,'" newly appointed national poet laureate Robert Pinsky told
Wired News, "he gave all of us who are 'queer' -- not necessarily
sexually -- a lot to meditate on. In that one line, there's
patriotism, determination to help, beauty, ornery resistance, and
good humor. His death will be more than the end of an era, but the
loss of someone who's capable of that kind of expression."
"Howl" -- the subject of an obscenity trial in San Francisco in
1956 -- was a cultural watershed, opening the door to frank
discussion of subjects like homosexuality, psychedelic experience,
and Buddhism, previously off-limits to public discourse in the
button-down '50s. Ginsberg became an icon of the counterculture at
the moment of its birth, giving fiery readings that reclaimed poetry
as a popular performing art, akin to jazz, from the dry textual
analyses of the "New Criticism" then in academic vogue. Ginsberg's
work has been cited as a seminal influence by such diverse cultural
figures as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Jerry Garcia, Vaclav Havel, John
Cage, and the Clash, and the poet's work has inspired numerous
unofficial Web sites.
The past year has been a very productive one for Ginsberg. He
published a volume of selected poems and a collaboration with artist
Eric Drooker called Illuminated Poems. He also recorded a CD called
The Ballad of the Skeletons, with Paul McCartney and Philip Glass.
Plans for a broadcast of MTV's Unplugged featuring Ginsberg,
McCartney, Dylan, and Beck "will probably be turned into a tribute,"
says Rosenthal.
Ginsberg's father, Louis -- also a poet -- died of liver cancer
in 1968. Though Ginsberg will receive a Buddhist funeral, a marker
will be erected beside his father's grave in B'nai Israel Cemetery in
Newark, N.J.
