Hear, hear!  I think Easy Project is the most gernerously jam-packed
entertainment of all the comps released so far.  Also, I just
received Sound Gallery (ordered the import before the Scamp release
was announced) and although it is great (the St. Etienne quote was so
appropriate), me thinks the Sound Spectrum is a more vital collection -
Lovin' Spoonful's Speakin' of Spoken is worth it alone.

Easy Project should be readily available.  CDNow has it as well as
the Sound Gallery (future release).  I think I found Sound Spectrum
at CD Connection.  If you didn't already know, these are all
collections of music from the late 60's / early 70's - which, I
guess, is the period that the UK's lounge scene is based around.
I could imagine St. Etienne listens to the like of Sound Gallery
daily!  If my fingers are feeling nimble later and you can't find
them elsewhere, I can e-mail you track listings.

the Blue Lizard folks - Maxine and Edward - are really cool and they got us a
private viewing of the club which is one of the most spectacular Tiki Bars I
have witnessed live.
It is called the Polynesian Room (and includes the Menehune Room and the
Waldorf coffee shop) and it is at the Waldorf Hotel. Their club happens once
a month but I don't know when?
Their phone is listed as 685-4024 and the Waldorf is [phone]
The Trader Vic's in Van is OPEN
the bar IS called the Harbour Bar as it always has been and is open for
drinks and a small "bistro" menu. The dining area is closed but we toured it
anyway and took pictures against the wishes of the bartender but he couldn't
really stop us cause he was the only employee there. Go early - last call is
at about 11 pm. The place is still fab and parking is free, I presume because
they can't afford to hire a valet to charge the customers!
Thanks to our grand Canuck tour guides, Christine of Poodle fanzine and Rob
of Poodle and INSITE online music zine, we were also able to tour the
Hawaiian Village Tiki Bar/restaurant which is pretty cool but divey and all
the Tiki carvings are of Northwest nature which I found rather humorous. The
2 main treats here are that you can dine in your own private Japanese style
room with sliding door and paper walls ( and I do mean paper so don't think
you're all alone and try to have too much fun!! ). These rooms are
individually named after the Hawawiian islands and the tables are short and
you sit on the floor Japanese style. And they have 5 or 6 house drinks that
you get to keep the mug.

Trader Vic's Portland was also very nice and has many Tikis and a good
bartender. They sell cool Trader Vic's caps of which I partook for about $16.
Save some moolah before venturing south. Better than that, ie more Tiki'ed
out if you can believe it and of course cheaper drinks, is the Alibi in North
Portland, 4024 N. Interstate Ave, 97227, 287-5335. When here be sure to order
a Mai Tai which is red and pretty bad but for an extra $7 you can keep the
glass. BEWARE THE RED MAI TAI.

Bill,
as I wrote in the Lyman piece I did for Lounge mag a while back,
Lyman played The Shell Bar at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

He only recorded at the dome because it was free, he actually hated the
acoustics and had to record late at night to avoid picking up street noise
outside the venue.

Also for what it's worth
The Arthur Lyman Group was the house band in the Tiki bar where the cast from
Hawaiian Eye hung out (on the show - not in real life)

And the same label that released that CD has two new Lyman releases

Maybe too weird.  Electronic music "realized" by Mort Garson, written and

together The Zodiac Cosmic Sounds.  No doubt a product of the late sixties -
on A & M Records SP 4156.

"...The Wozard Of Iz, the electronic odyssey of Dorothy attempts to fuse
words with wires and create a contemporary version of the children's
classic...."

They had to be on drugs.

Hello friends. This is my first time posting to the list. I'm a 16
year old vinyl junkie and have been collecting strange, wierd, and
otherwise cool music for about 4 years. A friend and I have our own
local public access show called "Formal Attire Required" where we
showcase various old and new cocktail,exotica, surf, Herb Alpert and
whatnot, all of which must be on vinyl.
I've found that any record I pick up which is Korean and "pop"-ish is
amazing. I have one by a man who I can only describe as looking like
a Korean Wayne Newton and music which I can only describe as all Moog
type soma-drug blissful happy music. This is best, if not most warped,
 'space age pop' i have ever heard. If there is anyone out there who
knows a lot about Korean imports I would love to hear from you.
The other day I bought a newly released record by a guy named Joey
Altruda called "Cocktails with Joey" As far as I know this is only
being released on vinyl. I'm usually pretty skeptical about new bands
jumping on the lounge bandwagon but this record is really great. It
is serious lounge music and NOT just trying to be hip and kitsch. The
cover is wonderful and the music is of the highest possible quality.
This could easily pass for having been made 30 or 40 years ago. I
strongly suggest it to anyone who likes exotia or lounge type music.

strange how tastes can differ & change... first of all, i didn't like
either of these 2 cds only half a year ago; now it seems that the music
appreciation cells inside my brain have changed/addapted/evolved...grown?

because, yes, yes, now i DO like them both, but i prefer the Gallery over
the Spectrum, although both contain some incredible stuff.

While in Europe recently, I found an LP of production music from RCA(catchy
title-"Media Music:Release No.5"),tracks numbered,not titled.It's great!
Breezy bossa rhythms,wordless vocals,perky strings, completely unencumbered
by "content".

Right now, I'm listening to my other favorite new acquisition, "Evolutions
and Contrasts" by Henk Badings and Dick Raaijmakers, an Lp of "serious"
electronic music ,that nonetheless seems to have as much in common with
Raymond Scott or Les Paul as it does with  Edgar Var=E9se!

I happen to be the proud owner of WL128 from the Aventures in Sound
series, entitled "Paris - 1925."  Andre Popp and his orchestra with Zizi
JeanMaire, Roland Petit, and Les Freres Jacques.  Recorded in Paris.  My
copy is still shrink-wrapped, so I expect the vinyl will be in mint
condition.  Ah, the delights of second-hand "new" records!

The notes explain that "...Andre Popp may also be heard on records in his

OK, here's a news update on progress with this site...

The tinkering continues:

- There has been a slight relocation of the site (see URL below).

- It's now called "Spaced Out: The Enoch Light WWW Site" and the front
  page has a groovy new look (check it!).

- The discography has been updated and now has label logo scans for the
  discog.  We've also made a start to track-listing everything as well as
  putting up a couple of LP cover scans - including a scan of the Chinese
  edition of "Faraway Places": readers may remember one of my first posts to
  this list wherein I raved greatly about this one - well now you can see
  it for yourselves!  It's not a great scan but you'll get the idea!

My thanks to list subscribers who have sent in info so far, but the job
has barely started - so here's another plea for anyone who has material they
would like to be included to please e-mail it to me and I'll try to fit it
in somewhere!  All participants of course get credited for the material
they send me...

Well, I picked this CD up last week and was initially not that impressed
but after a few listens I really like it - it's a bit of a grower...

Quite a lot of the CD is taken up with versions of James Bond music in a
variety of styles (a sultry "Take Five" style (but not in 5/4 - does that
make sense?!), gentle bossa etc - though I think I prefer Pucho's latin
treatment of Goldfinger - anyone heard that?) and generally nice quirky
tunes (though not quite as "demented" as the sleeve notes would have you
think).  It makes a great dinner party CD - I tested it out on Saturday!

I don't have either of the other CDs you mention so can't compare but I'm
sure someone else will...

i haven't heard it yet, but this is what the latest issue of record
collector said about it: "not all the material rises to the occasion: the
james bond & his sextet cuts are far too close to straight jazz to give it
that babycham kick, for exemple; and the running time is the wrong side of
40 minutes" (it's only 37 minutes)

cello playing in 10th grade was so lousy because I didn't have a 1731
Montagna !

The above 4 titles in at least VG++ condition set me back a total of $4.25.

I have a copy, and all I can say is the review you posted is spot on. It's hard
to take; the concept is so embarassingly awful to start with, and the
realization, with Sidney reciting "serious" words of Platonic wisdom over a bed
of Katz-ian jazz, is so *incongruous* (that would be "incongruus" in the Latin)
as to be nearly unlistenable. Really, it's not even funny in hindsight. Whose
idea was this?!

For some reason, I've chosen to hang on to it, though... :)

This one is well worth searching for.  Just my opinion, but this has
more beatnik wackiness than Ken Nordine himself.  The review you
posted describes it pretty accurately.  Finger snapping coolness with
comically inappropriate accents provided by Katz.  ISM v.II lists
another LP by Poitier and Katz, believe it or not.  I can't think of
the title, but if anyone has THAT for sale, please let me know!

I picked it up a couple of years ago. It was just too weird looking to pass
up - it is monumentally over the top, but not in a "so bad it's good" vein,
more like "so bad it really is bad". If you spot it for a couple of bucks,
though, by all means pick it up. Here are the phrases from the posted
review that really sum it all up :

I see that Mose Allison has a cut on one of the new lounge compilation.

I want to put in a plug for Mose, who is one of the authentic cool cats of
the lounge era.  Mose started as a jazz pianist, but his real success came
when he started to sing.  Mose has bounced around between labels over the
years, with releases on Prestige, Fantasy, Columbia/CBS, and A&M.  Fantasy
and Rhino, I believe, both have CD compilations in print now.

Mose sings in a laid-back style with a slight Southern drawl, usually
accompanying himself on piano.  He recorded a number of standards such as
"Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone," some R&B numbers such as Willie
Mabon's "Seventh Son," which was about as close as Mose ever got to a
commercial hit, and his own originals.  His most remembered original was
"Your Mind is On Vacation (And Your Mouth is Working Overtime)," which is a
perfect example of the sense of humor that runs throughout Mose's work.

This is a guy who makes Mel Torme and Dean Martin sound nervous and inhibited.

     Picked up CD reissue of "Enoch Light Presents Tony Mottola:
     The Best of Tony" in the bargain bin at Coconuts yesterday
     for 8 big ones.  Anyone on the list know what other Light and/
     or Mottola reissues are available?  While I've managed to find
     a few of their collaborative efforts in thrift stores, I haven't
     seen anything on CD.  And even though I prefer vinyl if there's a
     choice, I abhor paying the going vinyl rates that this stuff
     commands (especially being in New York where most Sal. Armys
     are picked clean, you're likely to pay upwards of $20 for
     anything even remotely decent - thus my quest for
     reissues).

i too have this delight of psychedelic weirdness. i once took it, added
various sound effects lps, 1960's news samples and the like and turned it
into a radio special in ann arbor. one should not underestimate the power
of the strange!

Yes, he's on one the Cocktail Mix comps that I don't have yet.

I think I've only heard one cut from him. However, Elvis Costello covers
"Everybody's Crying Mercy," which Allison (hmmm...) wrote, on the _Kojak
Variety_ album, and I thought it was great song.

And I definitely have been planning to check him out, with the 2CD Rhino
compilation, _Allison Wonderland_. (OK, so much for the title...)

Anita-

You should *never* pay more than $5.00 for a Project 3 or Command LP.
Okay, maybe $5.99.  Is NYC really Light-headed enough to be charging
Esquivel-like prices for this stuff?  Up in provincial Boston, Tony
Mottola records normally go for $3 to $4.

Mebbe you should start shoppin' in Joisey.  :-}

However, I have seen many Project 3 reissues on CD, including the 3 L's
(Lush, Latin & Lovely) and W's (Warm, Wild & Wonderful).  I think many
of the better cuts from these are reproduced on the "Best of" comp, though.

Friends...

I'm looking at my copy of Enoch Light's Spaced Out - the one with the
Barbarella like cover - and noticed something strange.  On the front, one of
the tunes listed is Michelle. Inside and on the back, there is no Michelle, A
Little Fugue for You and Me has replaced it.  No Michelle on the record,
either.

A batch of these must have got out with a misprint - did Michelle ever appear
on this LP?  I wonder....

     He wrote "Parchment Farm" (which has a "Route 66" rhythm vibe to it).

     but...Blue Cheer covered that song on their first album, a brilliant

     Their track "Talk Talk" is one of the coolest sides ever made by
     a rock band! Well under 2:00 of pure angst & frustration with a
     savage beat, classic farfisa and a 10 second fuzz guitar solo
     which is second to none! The band looked cool with their
     matching black bowl haircuts, pegged black pants, black Beatle
     boots and one black glove!

     The 'loungy' stuff on their first album is considered trash by
     their fans, but I'm glad that their version of "Cherry Cherry"
     is looked upon with respect by members of this list!!

     All the reissues of "Turn On The Music Machine" are in that
     wide, 60s stereo sound that, in my opinion lacks power and
     energy, and makes the band sound 'loose'. The best way to hear
     this stuff is on the mono vinyl Lp or better yet, the many
     singles that were pulled off of that album. The singles are
     still pretty common in collectors stores and should be had for
     $6.00 or less.

So I'm going seize his risk-taking and jump in here with a question.  I should
probably be going to psychedelia.com with this, but some exoticat out there
should be able to help me.  I'm looking for information on a band called
"Master's Apprentices".  I have a G.H. cd by them that I bought a couple years
back based on the first track "Turn Up Your Radio".  Don't recall the label at
the moment and lent the disk out recently (hence my revived interest) but
there is literally no information about the band at all with the cd.  I'm
guessing they are very early '70's psych/glam rock underdogs that never made
it big anywhere (this Greatest Hits had to be somebody's labor of love).
Replete with soccer haircuts and dandy ruffled suits, I can only liken the
sound to 13th Floor Elevators and the Archies vs. Led Zepplin and Herman's
Hermits.  Very odd.  The result sounds not unlike Dr. Teeth and the Electric
Mayhem (the house band from Jim Henson's "Muppet Show") let loose on AM radio.
If anybody out there knows who I'm talking about, any info would be
appreciated.

     It is amazing what kind of entertainment one can find for .25!

     "Electronic Music To Blow Your Mind By!!!"
     Design Records 282

     Hideous psych exploitation sleeve with stock Design BS on the back
     (talking about "Beethoven's Fifth", Broadway offerings and more on
     pure vinyl).

     Lounge music on a BAAAAAD TRIP!

     "Mindblower" sounds like Holiday-Inn Hammond style background music,
     with overdose echo, reverb and bells!

     "Zenquake" has the organ with surfy guitar & sax on a Bo Diddley beat
     plus reverb splashes and what sounds like drum sticks on piano strings
     (maybe some F&T involvement?) panned back and fourth.

     It goes on and on with titles like "The Shadows Of Vibrate", "Inner
     Ear Freakout", "Bells For Eternal Zoom" and more.

     Hard to believe this record was once available next to the Cheerios in
     your local market! What the hell were these people thinking when they
     made this stuff!

I have an album called "Paul Mauriat Salutes the Beatles" and it has some
_great_ covers of most of the great beatles on it. The version of Get
Back is particularly special! The melody is played on an accordion to
start off with, and is taken over later by a sitar. Very special!

Well worth the 50p I payed for it!

Nine Parts Devil, one of Nashville's very cool lounge acts, is
coming your way.  They are a contemporary lounge act in the
jazz tradition.  They write their own stuff; their one cover
number is "I Wanna Be Like You".  They've grown on me in a big way.

According to the best info that I have:  They are playing in
the South by Southwest Festival on 3/15 at the Continental
Club.  I hear that the Continental is supposed to be  the
happening spot for the Austin lounge scene.  Is it?

the wade in the water l.p., and the entire "mother nature's son" l.p.

wood" which smokes over the original with a great live intro "this next

Paul Mariat's Lady Madonna from Prevailing Airs is one of my faves.
Also, Natalie Cole does an outrageous gospelly version of Lucy In The
Sky complete with R&B backup chorus- "What ya doin' up there Lucy?"

vinyl "Family Of God" a new independent release by two friends of mine Adam
Peters and Chris Brick.
The Family Of God LP includes 22 songs recorded over last summer and fall,

i've just listened to their soundtrack to "Four rooms", and it's
wonderfull, fantastic! certainly worth buying, IMHO; about comparing,
everyone will tell you that they are heavy influenced by Esquivel, and
that's true, but there's more: spy jazz, cocktail jazz, twang guitars,
latin stufff, mostly instrumental but also some great female vocals... lots
of variation in moods & atmospheres & rhythms; i'm certainly going to buy
everything they release(d)!

Paul Mauriat's "Lady Madonna" is from the "Paul Mauriat Salutes the
Beatles" album - really good.

  I have this release and if you like Chet Atkins you will definitely
like this one. If rather you are looking for something exotic or unusual
this will not fill the bill. Just some good ole fashioned pickin'

think of it first: it's a symphonic orchestra with added drums and brass,
and solo's by banjo or pedal steel or guitar... it's a mix of symphonic
rock, big band, a military marching band, and some country when the banjo
plays; after listening to it several times, i still can't catalog it, but i
do like it; the drums are getting stuck a couple of times, the music seems
to come to a halt as if something goes horribly wrong during a rehersal,
and then it goes on as if nothing happened... very strange

Jimmy Bond was a Philadelphia-based bassist who played with Chet Baker's
1956 quintet.  Buddy Collette was an LA multi-instrumentalist who played
with a variety of West Coast jazz groups and led a few of his own.  My guess
is this is from 1962-4, probably recorded in LA.

If you feel like selling, let me know.

picked up has one side devoted to the beatles.  The tune isn't a cover in

The exotica mailing list continues to hit the spot!

Someone was asking for worst Beatles covers ... how about the truly
dire, overwrought version of "Help" that Deep Purple did on their first
LP "Shades of..." in 68 I think. I actually quite dig some of the rest
of the album (the cod psych/Carnaby St type stuff - after all, this was
a while before they got into their heavy rock scene), but there are also
a coupla real stinkers on there, and IMO top of the list is, yep, that
Beatles toon.

How about a "cool Beatles covers" list? or are we getting into the
realms of tribute albums here? What about those multiple "Beatles go
Bossa" albums? and those marvy fake Beatles albums issued at the height
of US beatlemania? donchaluvem!

Anyhow - just time to mention a couple of other things which might be of
interest to y'all - another new EZ/mood comp has just come out here,
"In-Flight Entertainment", compiled by the Karminsky brothers who DJ at
top London niterie "Indigo". Don't have a copy myself just yet but when
I do, I'll post a track listing. I think Brigitte Bardot features on
there for starters :-)

Also, "Record Collector" mag this month has a special on SABP Music and
the whole US space pop thang PLUS the Independent ran an obit on Les
Baxter last week - just a couple hundred words or so + a small pic but
it was nice to see it. Should I scan it and post the text?  anyone
interested to see?

hey, i was going to ask if anyone else had heard of this store/easy
listening club night (the club is called tynytyny i think, and they have ace
flyers for it).  a clued in friend of a friend showed introduced it to me,
and it's basically a slightly scary, dark store with piles of vintagey
clothes, from rainbow-striped ski ensembles to cloggy shoes to basic
polyester shirts etc.  apparently, muccia prada, the fashion designer, based
her spring collection on the storem, so it's been in vogue and i-d recently.
i was in too much of a rush to truly dive into the clothes, but i did pick
up a mix tape.  highly recommended, though i should have bought the one they
were playing while i was there.  it had a lot of sitar stuff on it, and i'm
really into that right now though it is under-represented in my collection.

by the way, the radio show i'm proposing looks like it has a good chance.

There must be innumerable strange Beatles (drop in any popular 60's band)
covers - in the sixties most small bands never tried to write their own songs,
but were perfectly satisfied with rerecording their favourite hit tunes. The
Beatles songs covered by obscure German bands alone would be a topic for
several all-nighters.

Gainsbourg+Bardot were really strange. Gainsbourg himself could not hold a
note, and this seems to go for his singers as well. But other than Jane Birkin,
whose voice at least qualifies for its teen-sex appeal, Brigitte Bardot had no
singing voice at all - the combination of her vigorous singing with Gainsbourgs
intricate psychedelic chansons sometimes is inanely funny, almost like karaoke
versions of Sinatra/Hazlewood. Fortunately, Gainsbourg and Bardot split before
"Je t'aime" - or the song would never have had that erotic pathos...  Their
weirdest song probably was "Comic Strip" (BTW: has anybody got the video of
that song? It was on TV when Gainsbourg died, but unfortunately I saw it with
no VCR at hand)!

Gainsbourg and Bardot DID record "Je t'aime"!
I used to have their version on a Japanese compilation CD with various
female singers (including France Gall, Jane Birkin, and Catherine Deneuve
of all people) interpreting Gainsbourg songs. I sold it a couple of years
ago, so I can't check the recording date now, but if I remember
correctly, the Gainsbourg-Bardot version was a bit less ecstatic than
the more famous Gainsbourg-Birkin version -- recorded out of bed, maybe.

Barker plays the Beatles.  I don't know if you've ever heard one of those

each and every track is a contender for worst Beatles cover!!!

this is the Beatle Barkers' lp "Woofers and tweeters", indeed with dogs
barking (assisted by cats and some other sanimals if i remember well) all

I bought the PRODUCT MUSIC CD, hyped in a previous digest. Compiled from
various 1960s and 70s industrial sales albums, it explores the uncharted
realm of inspirational sales music that was--ironically--never commercially
available.

I was extremely disappointed in this CD, which seems to have been
compiled from what was available in someone's collection rather than from
carefully chosen selections that were actually worth hearing. Five or six
tracks (out of 20) are somewhat interesting; the rest are boring and
unimaginative genre knockoffs. If you're looking for some sort of
"ridiculousness quotient," for the most part, forget it.

The album was compiled in Japan; maybe they seek epiphany in unspeakably
bland US corporate anthems. Perhaps someone would have us believe this is
"incredibly strange music." It's a concept you wish you could share
with friends who have a taste for the bizarre. But it's a let-down.

There's one track which is thoroughly brain-damaged: "My Bathroom is a
Private Kind of Place." It's the only excuse--and a good one--for keeping
this CD. An unbelievable head-turner of a tune, guaranteed to provoke
queries when played in any circumstances.

The problem is, nothing else on the CD approaches this. There have to be
tracks out there that are equally incomprehensible and startling. Someone
should find them and put them on CD.

That's too bad I was thinking of getting it, I still might. I have heard
the 'Bathroom' song before, it's played on the Best of WFMU TV video tape
as someone is giving the viewer a tour of the bathrooms at the WFMU radio
station. It's really great! The Wacky Indian Dance Number makes me stutter.

1.On Elektra Records, Joshua Rifkin recorded "The Baroque Beatles Songbook"
sometime around 1965-66. Tunes such as I Want to Hold Your Hand and Hard
Day's Night played as if they were composed by Bach.
2." Big Band Beatle Songs" by Bob Leaper.  Fairly swinging jazz instrumentals
on London Records.  Love Me Do, Please Please Me, She Loves You, etc.
3. The Chipmunks Sing The Beatles. You know exactly what this sounds like.
4. "Mrs. Miller's Greatest Hits" includes "A Hard Day's Night"
A middle-aged woman from NJ with a very shaky operatic approach. I was never
sure if she took herself seriously or not.
5. Sam Chalpin, "My Father the Pop Singer"  I assume this was Atco's response
to Mrs. Miller. A little old jewish man not quite singing "I Want to Hold
your Hand" and "Michelle'.
If anyone knows anything about him, I'd like to know.
6. The Hollyridge Strings produced a bunch of albums, of which I have two and
"Strawberry Fields Forever "is a standout.

There is a British tribute album called "Revolution #9" that came out in the
late '80's.  Pretty straightforward covers of mid to late career Beatles,
but the two bizarro stand-outs are the Moondogs Beatnik-Jazz take on "Nor-
wegian Wood"  a chorus of whispered vocals, brushed drums and the fattest
Hammond the Fab4 never played.  You can practically smell the clove cigarettes.
The other is a dismantling of "Flying" with spoken word history of the boys
from Liverpool delivered in a sing-songy nasal tone while the cheap-o Casio
keyboard whines away in the background.  If that hasn't shown up on Dr. Demento
yet, it should.  Hilarious.  Will dig up the artist's name if anyone cares.

OOOOOO _____    I like this EXOTIC music !     :-D

        Yet another artist I learned about through the "Incredibly Strange
Music" books (see vol. 2, page 176-179). ELIZABETH WALDO is both a
classical trained musician and a musical archaeologist. She was the first
to record rare pre-Columbian instruments and to recreate long forgotten
music, by study of the melodies and airs that still live with the Andes
people. She combines ancient instruments and scales with modern ideas. The
result is awesome and beautiful.
She uses snake rattles, birdy flutes, all kinds of drums, there's even a
wordless Sumac-isch voice in 1 song... all this creates a jungle
atmosphere; when you're listening to this beautifull music, you'll think
you're right in the middle of the rain forest; this music is very close to
nature itself.

Waldo: "I have always blended the instruments of indigenous America into my
        scores... rescuing their sounds from the silence of the tombs. I fuse
        the past with the present, to create music of the spirit for today".

The CD "Sacred rites" has songs from 2 older LPs (which are still
available! - see below); unfortunately, the record company decided to omit
5 tracks :(
The first part of the CD (songs from the LP "Rites of the pagan") is the
most exotic, because in the second part (from the LP "Realm of the Incas")
the pre-Columbian instruments are accompaznied by the Spanish guitar.

I just bought Vol. 1, "Mondo Exotica," because it is mostly instrumentals.
It leans a little too heavy on Denny and Baxter for me since I have alot of
their stuff. Otherwise, top notch collection. I looked at Vol. 3, "Space
Capades." I have no idea why they named it such, since most of the titles
did not touch upon space (some nifty space related pics, tho). If it did, I
would have purchased it. Next time I see all the Volumes, I will give them

OOOOOO _____    I like this EXOTIC music !     :-D

        Patrick Husson is a French gardener, and was also a soloist in a
church choir. His remarkable "angel" voice first astonished the locals,
then the press, then voice trainers... because he is one of the only men in
the world to posess a real soprano voice! His upper voice range is a lot
higher than that of Klaus Nomi, and his voice is more clear and pure too.
It's really incredible, and so beautifull! I compared his "Ave Maria" with
that of the castrato Alessandro Moreschi (on the CD "The last castrato",
Pearl Opal 9823, UK, 1987) and i find Husson's voice to be more the same as
Moreschi's than as a female soprano.
        Of course, a heavenly voice alone is not enough to make an
interesting CD, you also need a good song selection and nice arrangements.
Only 2 original songs were written for this CD, 1 is a traditional (not
known to me), and all the others are covers. Most of the arrangements
provide a heavenly (but not religious) atmosphere for Husson's singing:
lots of strings (both synthesisers and the real thing), piano, slow
rhythms, little percussion.
        Some surprising and succesful exceptions though: "Mai Macsu" has
African percussion and some exotic nature sounds. Most notable though in
the whole CD are  "Hey Jude" and Michael Nyman's "Chasing sheep is best
left to shepherds": both have an accumulative construction with a lot of
tension and with a truly fantastic outburst of electric guitars... they
still give me the creeps!
        Somewhat less succesful IMHO are "Reggae for La Callas" - somehow,
the white reggae doesn't fit with Husson's singing - and "Mrs Butterfly"
which is a narration in French with Husson singing in the background...
        Conclusion: woooooooow!

I own the Ultra-Lounge releases "Mondo Exotica", "Mambo Fever" and "Bachelor
Pad Royale".  Personally, I enjoy all three.  If I had to make
recommendations, I would suggest "ME", "MF" and "BPR" in that order.  But
then, I have a strong preference for Denny-esque exotica followed by a great
love for mambo.

As for the other CDs that you ask about, both the Cocktail Mix set and the
Ultra-Lounge set have one CD devoted to wild, swinging nightclub music.  I
passed on both CDs becuase I already own at least half of the material on
each CD on other albums.  Although a lot of the material is very good, I
don't really think of it as "lounge" so much as "nightclub".  Maybe the
distinction is my own little hangup.  Also, I am somewhat of a vocals
fanatic and would rather own the entire Dean Martin or Louis Prima album
than a compilation.

From a quick perusal of the other Cocktail Mix CDs at the store, I didn't
see anything that excited me.  Of the Ultra-Lounge set, I am still
considering getting "Rhapsodesia".

Another set that looks very intriguing is the "Music for a Bachelor's Den"
set from DCC.  I have the first CD of that set and a lot of the material has
an exotic, tropical feel to it that I enjoy quite a bit.

I am not familiar with Cocktail Mix so I can't tell you about that.  As far as
Ultra Lounge is concerned, I have Mondo Exotica; Space Caspades; Rhapsodesia and
Bachelor Pad Royale.  Mondo Exotica and Bachelor Pad Royale tie for first with
Rhapsodesia a close second.  Great stuff!

I didn't like Space Caspades very much.  It sounded too pedestrian for me.  Not
much to do with space sounds whatsoever.  I guess I was expecting "Forbidden
Planet" or something, with lots of therimin.  Strike out.

Irwin Chusid has uncovered some interesting news for all you Esquivel fans
out there. There appears to be a great lost Esquivel album. It's entitled
"SEE IT IN SOUND". It would have followed "More of Other Worlds, Other
Sounds" chronologically.  From what we've heard from Neely Plumb and
Esquivel, it was in the tradition of "Zounds! What Sounds", "Music from A
Surplus Store", "La Dolce Henke", "Shock", etc - a sound FX laden Esquivel
album, using a smaller ensemble (15 pieces). The deal on this album is that
it was *so weird*, RCA rejected it. Absolutely refused to put it out.
Meaning that, if it's that  bizzare, it may be the greatest thing he ever
recorded. Neely Plumb says it was amazing. At this point we're praying that
it's buried somewhere deep in the RCA archives. It appears that they will
finally release it if and when the tapes are found. Keep an eye on the
Space Age Bachelor Pad site-if a track listing is found, it will be posted
there.

This rejection by RCA may indicate why Esquivel didn't record another album
for three years, although he also claims, quite truthfully, that this was
the time period that he started his live show and was too busy with that
(and writing for Universal) to do anything else. This was not the first or
last time, either, that RCA rejected an Esquivel album. "More of Other
Worlds...", released in August '62 (6 months after "Latin-Esque") was
recorded by Bill Stewart's Albums Inc production company, who shopped the
licensing agreement to the highest bidder, which turned out to be Reprise.
Whether "See It In Sound" (which RCA payed for) was recorded before or
after "More OWOS" is unknown at the moment, but it does mean that RCA
rejected 2 albums, possibly in a row. Esquivel, with his Sights and Sounds
band, didn't return to the studio until late '65/early '66 to record
"Esquivel! Actual!", which was initially released in Latin America in June
'66 ( later released in the States in January '67 as "The Genius of
Esquivel"). His band returned to the studio in "67 to record his last album
of the 60's, "Esquivel! 1968!". RCA U.S. chose not to pick up their option
for that title, bringing Esquivel's U.S. recording career to a halt.

To clear up the 1993 date on the Barry collection...this date applies to when
EMI UK sourced and compiled these early Barry tracks for this compilation.
 As for the question if there will be a voume l2...Yes, in fact there will
even be a volume 3.
Vol1 concentrates more on the twangy rock n roll instrumentals although it
does have a cool cocktail jazz track called "Christella" as well as Barry's
first film score for a rather embarrassing teen angst flick called "Beat
girl" which is pretty swingin'.  The first 6 tracks are somewhat humorous as
Barry himself is the vocalist, with a somewhat un-self-assured,
trying-to-be-hip swagger in his delivery.  The rockin' instrumental tracks
(which make up the great majority of the CD's 37 tracks) do attest to whyTthe
John barry 7 were consistent faves in music polls as one of the top
instrumental bands in the UK.

Vol 2 features Barry's "stringbeat" sound, named after the album whose tracks
are all included in this volume.  The "stringbeat" sound was bascially a
pizzacto string section added to barry's combo with an overall sound being
sort of a a hybrid between rock n roll guitar twang and hip easy listening.
 Several of these tracks feature Barry's use of the Clavoline, the space-age
sounding keyboard that was used to great effect on Joe Meek's production of
the Tornados classic "Telstar"...the interesting thing is that Barry's use of
the Clavoline was an entire year before Joe Meek's.  The spacey organ sounds
mixed with the pizzicato strings and Vic Flick's twangy guitar bring to mind
what a western themed lounge on the planet Mars might be playing over their
interstellar sound system!  (Volume 2 is set for release in late May)

I don't know if another Barry will be out

Some of the stuff on it is popish rockabilly sap but there are some real
go-go gems and brilliancy though I wouldn't call it "exotic"

John Barry is very much alive and still working in the US.  I recently spoke
to his business manager who informed me he had been spending some time in
Switzerland.  I'll try to find out what he is currently working on and I will
inform list members as soon as I do.

Barry is perhaps best known for composing no less than eleven James Bond
films (From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Yuo Only Live Twice,
On Her Majesty's Secret Service, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The
Golden Gun, Moonraker, Octopussy, A View To A Kill, and The Living Daylights)
as well as classics like Midnight Cowboy, Out Of Africa, The Ipcress File,
Lion In Winter, King Rat, and many more.

Most covers have a guy in a powdered wig standing and holding a pair
of headphones.  This cover has the same guy seated wearing the
headphones and a surprised expression.  Also, this cover has no
mention of Walter Carlos on front.  The label is gray, the catalog
number and liner notes are identical.  Is this an earlier pressing?
(I would assume so since Carlos' name isn't mentioned).
