From: Mike Ensley <kmensley@amaranth.com> Subject: Big Spenders Date: 05 Aug 1972 11:13:18 -0500 Esquerlita and I have conferenced, trying to decide which album we've spent the most money on, but its tough because we tend to take the thrift in thrift stores pretty seriously. I recently attended a small time record show here in town where people who had probably never listened to Yma Sumac's albums, but read about how "collectible" they are in Goldmine, were selling her records for ungodly prices. Julie London's Calender Girl, a record we've coveted for a long time, was available...for $40. No thanks. We're inclined to agree that the album we paid the most for was non-exotica: Wanda Jackson's Right or Wrong. The hefty price: $4.00. Meanwhile platters by Denny, Baxter, Lyman, Esquivel, Light, Hyman, etc., we keep buying for 50 cents to $1 at all the local thrifts and flea markets... It pays to shop around. Date: 07 Aug 1972 00:55:56 -0500 Lee and Aime, I would definitely love to get both catalog versions, as my exposure to DIONYSUS thus far has been sooo very positive. In fact, I've named the Paul Marco/Criswell split single as one of our "Reasons to Not Commit Suicide" in the next issue of PIGEONHOLE. Please send me the catalog as well as any press info you can offer! Don't know if there's a U.S. release planned ir not. The following is a from an ad for the album that appeared in the U.K. mag "Q" (August issue"). The quote is from NME (New Musical Express, another trendy U.K. mag): > "...a corker - widescreen ambient rock, with soaring singalong tunes and magical, dreamlike moods." > > A "Q" review in the very same issue says: > > "...glaringly bandless coffee-table timewasting..." > > Can't say, myself, I haven't heard it, but I am a Badalamenti fan. The album is called "Booth and the Bad Angel." It's been released here in the States. I've heard the single and it sounds like the latter Q review. I thought the single was just plain bad and quite dissapointing... Luv... <shudder>) First, I must defend I band I truly love, Love Jones. When I interviewed vocalist Jonathan Palmer for the latest issue of PIGEONHOLE, he was still somewhat aghast that the band was still being lumped into the exotica scene. "There's a not a trace of Martin Denny in what we do," said Palmer. "We're lounge in the truest sense of the word: cocktail swilling, theatrical, upbeat entertainment." In fact, Love Jones is really a tight pop/funk group, not exotica or SABPM. Palmer himself says that their connection with the whole "Cocktail Nation" movement was based more on their image and attitude rather than their musical style, and that the media sort of falsely presented them in same vein as bands like Com Ed. Plus, their latest album "Powerful Pain Relief" is just excellent butt-shakin' music! On the subject of other bands I would reccomend, if you like crooners, check out the now-defunct Useless Playboys on Man's Ruin Records. You won't be dissapointed.
