Subject: (exotica) Vinyl Valentine
Date: 01 Feb 2002 21:12:39 -0500
I'm needing some assistance from anyone willing to share ideas, images, and
sites of reference.
I want to make my boyfriend a valentines card with an image of a romantic
record cover. Anyone have something I could use or know somewhere I can
grab something like that? It has to be exceptional because he is.
Would love to hear your ideas.
Aloha,
Tiki Kiliki

Subject: (exotica) Zorn's Gift...
Date: 03 Feb 2002 13:35:39 +0000
Hi,
Some Exotica news for Brits or those who may be visiting the UK in late
March û John Zorn is performing The Gift at The Barbican on March 25.
The BarbicanÆs own publicity pamphlet reads:
John Zorn has come to define the musical promiscuity of downtown New
YorkÆs rock, jazz and improv scenes. An astonishingly gifted hard bop
soloist, he has fronted a baffling range of projects over the years,
from thrash metal quartets to Bacharach tributes; from Klezmer bands to
classical chamber compositions based on games. Here he switches from the
alto sax to piano and theremin for a world premiere of his new project
æThe GiftÆ, melding surf-rock, lounge jazz and worldbeat exotica. ZornÆs
band features a host of New York luminaries including trumpeter Dave
Douglas, guitarist Marc Ribot, keyboardist Jamie Saft, drummer Joey
Baron and percussionist Roberto Rodriguez.
Ticket prices range between 10 û 20 Pounds. You can book online at:
www.barbican.org.uk
æThe GiftÆ is a pretty good album, and IÆm looking forward to hearing it
performed live. Hm, nowà what to wear?

Definitely try Mancini doing his "Peter Gunn" stuff, then try other West
Coast "cool" jazz, specifically Shorty Rogers. Most of Rogers is out of
print domestically, though you can find used CDs on eBay and other places,
plus RCA Spain has reissued some albums. There's also a two-fer on
Collectables.

Just checking in from funky funky North Carolina (triangle area), which may
soon have TWO lounge/gogo internacionale nights per month if all goes well
at this great new 4-floor, 3-bar, DJs & live music club in Durham called
Ringside http://www.ringsidedurham.com/ (in addition to existing nights at
Henry's Bistro)
I'm spinning strictly 60s-70s stuff like Bardot, Serge, Asian Pop,
Bollywood, KPM hammond grooves, Bossa Nova, latin boogaloo, exploito rock,
etc....
...and yes, 101 Strings, too!!!!

At Spumco we use several stock music libraries. The happy Ren &
Stimpy music was mostly from the KPM library. This is production
music licensed by Associated Production Music in Hollywood. At
the time John picked it for Ren & Stimpy, it was a dirt cheap
old library that no one had used since the sixties. Now that
it's become "hip and trendy" again, it's so expensive, we can't
use it except for special projects. There is only one
commercially available CD that includes music from this
library. It's called Music For TV Dinners.
On the Yogi Bear show we tracked down some of the original
stock cues that Hanna Barbera used on the original Huck Hound
show. These were composed by Seeley-Loose, Hormel, and others.
Some of these cues, like Toboggan Run were tangled up in red
tape, and our music researcher, Daniel Goldmark was able to
track down the owners so we could negotiate to use them again.
We also used the classic title music by H-B's in house music
director as well. The only source I know for this stuff is the
Hanna-Barbera Pic-A-Nic Basket boxed set.
On Weekend Pussy Hunt, we used the Chappel Music Library, which
is really good for what folks call "Crime Jazz". This library
was excerpted on a German CD called Bettie Page: Danger Girl.
Stock library music is an interesting area to collect. You
can find vinyl copies of old libraries in junk stores sometimes,
but don't pay too much for them. It's usually a pig in a poke.
Some is good... some is unlistenably bad. Generally the stuff
called "tension", "crime", "war" and "light activity" is the
best.
Hope this helps...
See ya

This is all very interesting and useful info, Steve - the use of the
different libraries explains a bit of the different "feel" each series has.
But you left out Ripping Friends - what are you using there?
Also, everyone on the old (exotica) list: be sure to switch over to the new
[exotica] listserv before Lazlo puls the plug and you findyourself in
exotica-limbo.
