Another trick that I know Kurt Simpson has done is to run a second cable
along-side the working one... in this way, if the cable breaks on the trail,
you have the new one right there handy and your down time is minimal.

Yep, that's the bast was to carry a second cable since it doesn't take up
space in a toolkit or fanny pack. I know several people who do it this
way.
Another trick is to seal the ends with some of that rubberized tool grip
coating - the stuff you'd dip the handle of pliers in. This protects the
cable from mud and other assorted gunk from getting in it.
