Tis true Wayne! A few simple mods like jetting & airbox hacking are worth the small $$. The
rest is just fluff or trying to compensate for a lack of skills. I have a lot of cohorts who
can't ride for sh*#, but they sure do have tons of "stuff" on their bikes. They will never
get back the cash or all the headaches that they dumped into it either. Riding, riding and
more riding is how to outrun 90% of your competitors. If you are not crashing a lot at first,
you aren't pushing yourself hard enough. Can't wait to hear the feedback from this one ;-)

I don't really care too much about the noise. I heard that the cobra pipe
puts out a max of 92db on the 350 which isn't bad compared to 2 strokers.
All I am interested in is getting the rear exhaust. I feel that the header
pipe is adequet. I don't know how much a Yosh would cost for the back half
but I heard that cobra is around $170? Does anyone know what the
neighbourhood would be for a yosh? Is there any places that anyone
recommends out of the states cause there are absolutly no dealers around
here!
I was thinking about cutting out the top of the air box but I took the
gromit out of the top and the bike ran like sh*t if you can even call it
running. It would barely start. Is this cause my jets were leaned out to
much?

Gino, I thought I was the only one on this list with a stone stock DR350!
Getting ready to do some heavy modifying though...gonna install an
aftermarket o-ring chain. Will I need to change my jetting!

I have a comment about the need for experience vs mods and increasing
your riding ability. I just put a front knobby on the bike (Bridgestone
M39) because I thought the original stock front tire was the reason I was
having a difficult time keeping up with the other guys at the Amsterdam
dual sport ride. The new tire makes a HUGE difference. Now I'm not
claiming that knobby tires make a rider because my friend who is an
X-motocross rider could ride my bike with stock tires in deep sand like
nobody's business. However, I noticed that the knobby tire on the front
made it much easier for a novice like myself to get through the thick
nasty stuff much more easily. The riders at the dual sport ride all had
knobbies AND experience. With my new front knobby, I notice how much the
rear tire (Pirelli MT-21) sucks in the sand. Rather than the front wheel
digging sideways in the sand, the rear fishtails and I bog down because
of lousy traction. So, I think mods are good and in my case may make up
for inexperience.

Doug,
Learn to read your shop manual, or even your owners
pamphlet. They should give you all the specs you need for
changing to an o-ring chain. If not I'm sure Gino could ;o)>

Chuck,
You bring out a good point, but there is also something to
be said for learning to get the most out of what you have.
THEN when you upgrade tires, you can learn to get the most
out of them. If you get them first you may use them as a
"crutch" instead of learning proper technique. So keep
working on technique, follow the "better" riders until they
have to follow you!

Okay, I have to come clean before this gets out of hand. I don't have a
totally stock DR350, that concept started as an inside joke last spring. My
DR is modified with the following:
Acerbis tank
Acerbis Rally Pro hand guards
Pro Taper bars
DR350 Dirt model gel seat
Driveline services side racks
Suzuki tail rack
Gel Grips
Engine and everything else is totally stock

Where's the best place to learn good off road riding techniques? My
riding buddies all have 4 wheelers so they're not of much use except they
help pick my bike off my leg when I fall down. There's a track nearby
but I'll surely get in the way of the experienced riders. I saw a couple
of videos out there - any ones worth buying? How bout books and such?
At the Amsterdam dual sport ride I did learn quite a bit from the other
riders but these are few and far between. I am getting better by just
riding on the weekends - maybe just continuing on my own is the way to
go. I am getting good at falling off my bike. That's about the only
thing that comes naturally for me.

Please tell me you are kidding! Tires a crutch - COME ON! Tires are
crucial in all types of terrain, including street. THINK this through. I
have nothing else.

Great question! I sure would appreciate an answer as well. I rode dirt
bikes / mini bikes as a kid, but need some basics in a big way too! Around
here, there are lots of places to ride, and I am learning the hard way.
Besides hooking up with a great rider who can give me tips and pointers,
what else is available?
Thanks,
Rod
