Will do. As I'm thinking over what I'm about to do, I get the
feeling that just changing the front or rear is probably a bad idea.
The stock settings while not very good for someone my weight, are at
least matched. I'm going to be modifying one end, which will probably
cause the other end to get very strange which will more than likely
give bad results overall.

Hi Eric,
Sorry to hear about your crash and hope you get well soon. What you
wrote was well said. It's too bad that sometimes we have to learn the
hard way. Here's what I've always worn whenever trail riding:
MX full face helmet (Snell 95)
Goggles
Chest and Back protector
Long sleeve jersey with padding at the elbows
MX pants
Gloves
MX boots
Knee and shin protector
I'm thinking about adding an elbow protector as I saw a very nice
one recently. The boots have saved my toes countless times. Just
recently I clipped a hidden tree stump at about 30 mph and it wedged
my boot between the stump and my footpeg. I actually bent the cast
footpeg and put a cool looking dent into my alpinestar steel toe
protector on the boot. Had I been wearing regular hiking boots or
tennis shoes, I guarantee my foot would have been broken.
Also, I don't know how many times I've kicked up rocks and branches
and they've hit me right in the knee and shin. I've actually torn a
pair of pants via this method. Without protection my knees would be
in even worse shape.
I always say buy as much protection as you can. Someday you'll be
thankful you did.

Knee protection is an absolute must.
I don't wear a chest protector because I have too much other junk on my
back and chest when riding - back pack, and a helmet cam recorder on my
chest.

I learned about the mini stalk rear turn signals from this message list
(thanks). They held up great after my last wreck. As I lifted the bike
off my leg I glanced back to make sure the new turn signals I installed
held up. Sure enough, they were unscathed.
I am starting to seriously consider increasing the amount of safety gear
I use. My crashes have been relatively minor but I don't think it's
worth taking any unnecessary risks. A more severe one might be just
around the corner. What are you fine folks' opinions of gear like boots,
pads, armor and the like? I use a 3/4 face helmet instead of a
motorcross helmet and I'm beginning to wonder if this is such a good
idea. I'm talking about trail riding by the way - nothing intense.

Twice I have ripped that little steel tow protector clean off of my boots by hitting rocks and such.

I think I got the mini stalk turn signals from White Brothers for about
$15. I can't remember for sure so whoever told me about them on this
list has to help with the info.
I have become aware lately that not wearing safety gear is foolish. I
have had a few close calls in the 5mos I have been riding the DR. I have
been glad the bike is so light (compared to a 600cc or 650cc bike) and
doesn't have more power. I think I have been lucky to be injury free
till now. I was amazed a couple of times after I crashed and stood up
without any pain. I have been concerned by my ability to go faster and
faster through sometimes difficult terrain. When I started riding I was
afraid of crashing so I kept my speed down. Now that I'm speeding up and
getting more comfortable, I know that a high speed crash (i.e. 20+ mph is
high speed for me) is a real possibility. I see trees whizzing past and
think to myself how much damage they could do to my tender, unprotected
body. My safety gear consists of the following (I'm really serious):
tennis shoes
jeans
3/4 face helmet (when I feel like it)
I haven't been hurt on the DR yet but I broke my arm on a Honda CT 70
when I was 13 yrs old. As a result, that arm is 1& 1/2 inches shorter
than the unaffected one. I am starting to realize that I have been
really dumb (I'm 32 and should know better). And you know, I always
think "good for you" when I see the guy on the ski slope or surfer with a
helmet and dumb ass me forgets about safety gear when it's me who will be
in the hospital.

Hello all!
Guess if I had a lot of e mails?! I only check my mail at the university
and during the summer break they just kept coming...
I don=B4t know if you=B4re aware of the chains effect on shifting. I=B4ve no=
ticed
that when I have cleaned and oiled it the bike shifts smoother. In fact,
the whole bike feels better.
I=B4m surprised to read about the problems you=B4re having with the CV carb.=
I
ride enduro with my DR S -92 and have never had any problems despite many
falls and low speed running in hot whether when stalling. Is it a BST 33 SS
(like mine)? Stock jetting on my carb is 42,5 pilot and 135 main.
Have anyone tested some kind of dry lubricant for the chain? When you ride
in sand it gets dirty in seconds and all sand must be like grinding on it.
Does Twin air filters fit nicely in the air box? I already have a high flow
filter (multi air) but it does not fit very well so I=B4m afraid that air ma=
y
enter the engine unfiltered. I mounted the stock filter and went out
testing the bike and it had definitely lost power. Now I=B4m thinking of
buying another filter and Twin air seems to be a common choice.
Thanks!

For sure: too much petrol dumping into the bore means that it doesn't
get burned up. This has 2 major effects:
1) Obviously your fuel consumption is way too high
2) The fuel washes the nice lubricating oil off the cylinder wall, and
when the piston comes back up, it's running dry.....menas you're gonna
destroy your rings in the medium to long term. I reckon running too rich
on the main jet, and too much use of the choke also, has been the cause
of too many top end rebuilds.......

The lubricating oil never comes in contact with the gas in a four stroke engine. The
engine will actually last longer running slightly rich (runs cooler). The engine will
bog down and foul plugs if it is too rich along with all the extra un-burn
hydrocarbons that are spewed in to the environment.
On a two-stroke you would have to run it very rich or flood the crank-case out with
gas to run into problems with the oil being washed away. If you running pre-mix,
there would be oil in the gas any ways.
I hope that helps you out.

seem even worse...
So I am thinking to upgrade the forks. I have already got it revalved,
new springs, new oil, etc... but it still isn't as good as for example
my buddy's XR400R stock forks.
I was thinking about one of the 3 options :
1. Buy used RM forks from a used parts dealer. Which RM model (year)
has forks that fit a 93 DR-S ?
2. Buy Race-Tech fork cartridge emulators $124.95 (WB p/n 11-509 page
220). By the WB catalog it seems there aren't Race-Tech fork gold
valves available for the '93 DRS, right ?
3. Race-Tech fork cartridge conversion kit $428.51 (WB p/n 11-506 page
219). Is this worth it ? Is it better to buy this kit or to buy a used
set of RM forks (more risky in my opinion...).
If money wasn't an issue (but it is...), which one is probably give me
that state-of-the-art fork feeling ?
Please e-mail me your opinions and comments.
Thanks in advance. >>
