Please check this website: http://www.nmaoffroad.org/news.stm scroll down
to the part about the Chevy truck ad, then read the response from Tory
Briggs, President of the NMA. I also suggest sending an e-mail similar to
the one Tory sent to CAC@chevrolet.com
Please forward this to your friends, etc that are motorcycle enthusiasts.

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this list and to the world of the DR350. My DR is a 1998 =
but was brand new when I bought it last week. I just love the thing! =
Lots of logging roads around here that I didn't even know existed until =
this week.
Here's my question: In the manual, they tell you to stay below =
5000rpm for 500 miles (800km); below 6000rpm up to 1000 miles (1600km). =
When I bought the bike, the guys at the store told me that I was to =
forget that stuff, and keep it below 5500rpm for the first 120 miles =
(200km), then go up 1000 rpm every 120 miles. (6500 after 240 miles, =
7500 after 360 miles etc....) They told me that break in is more =
effective this way.
What is the deal here? I know the manual is full of overblown =
statements like "don't touch gasoline, it could give you cancer" sort of =
warnings which are more or less overblown. Is it the same story with =
the break in limits? I don't want to damage my bike, so I have kept it =
below 5500rpm for the first 350 miles, but today I started to go up to =
6500 rmp for short pulls. =20
Any information on this would be GREATLY appreciated,
Thanks,
Rod =20

Ahh yes---I'm surprised it took so long for this thread to appear! Its very
common on the other lists, and a source of intense debate for some :)
Actually Rod, you cant hurt anything if you follow the manual to the letter.
But then again, you probably wont hurt anything if you cut the mileage
limits in half either! I would suggest you take it real easy (under 5Krpm)
for the first 100 miles, THEN CHANGE THE OIL (AND FILTER) WITH GOOD OLD
REGULAR DINO OIL. Then the step increases your shop recommended sound good.
An extra oil & filter change prior to 500 miles would give you a little
extra insurance. I broke in 2 new sportbikes like that that I ended up
riding long & hard w/ no problems or excess oil use.
Enjoy the bike!

Subject: (dr350) fork guards
I've got a 99 DR350 dirt only and I just ordered some fork guards and a
front disc guard. They are made by Maier, on the package they came in it
says for use on a DR350 up to 1997. Is there a big difference in the forks
in those two years? The guards they sent me seem like they are too long. I
can't say for sure because my front wheel is currently off the bike because
I am waiting for my new front rotor. I'm just mainly wanting know if I
should ship these back to Dennis Kirk or not.

According to my Acerbis catalog they don't make any plastic specifically for
the DR350. However, Maier http://www.maier-mfg.com/ seems to be coming out
with a lot of plastic for the DR.

You got caught by the same snafu that a lot of us fell into. I did
the same thing, brought the guards back to where I bought them from
and ordered the acerbis instead. It turned out the acerbis product
was just as bad. What happened was that in '98 the forks were changed
and the disc guard wasn't modified to fit. What was worse was that
Chapparell and Dennis Kirk listed them as fitting @!@!##@!
AFAIK no one makes a product that works. Your only solution is to
go with one of the older models and modify it to fit. I called
acerbis and they said that they had no plans to upgrade their product
in the near future.
If anyone knows of fork/disc guards that were made for and will fit
the '98 and on DR350SE, I'd like to hear about it. I'm still holding
out.

well, everyone on the list could subscribe to DSN, submit great articles on the DR
